    Thanks for taking the time after work to roll around with me. Let's hangout again soon!
    The Mercury Sable is good for driving to grandma's house were you can go in basement and open the closet that she doesn't want you to open. She says to stay out of the shadows. Grandma says that if you walk in shadows, you will become a "shadow man." The state took her license away last year so you can drive her car. You had to eat Taco Bell for three days straight to fart her smell out of the upholstery.

      +Logan babcock Really? A Taurus was uncomfortable? I had a 1996 Taurus GL and it was insanely comfortable. It was a pile of shit and it went through 3 transmissions before it got totaled in a wreck, but god it was comfortable.

    The Sable was the vehicle for those that saw cars as an appliance, nothing more. Acceleration with the Vulcan V6 was best described as "eventual".

    • @legostar55
      @legostar55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Eh, it's actually a pretty good motor. The best way to describe the Duratec and Vulcan is this. The Duratec is a high rpm horsepower beast and the Vulcan is a Low rpm torque monster. The Vulcan V6 does not like to rev high.

    • @anthonyevich3836
      @anthonyevich3836 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@legostar55 True... the 2001 taurus i used to drive had a vulcan and it didn't rev crazy. Acceleration was surprisingly okay, did't feel much different than dad's old 1999 suburban that had 255 horsepower. When punching the gas with the wheels turned hard left or right from a stop sign, the tires almost always chirped

    • @vinnygraziano1318
      @vinnygraziano1318 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've had 5 Sables pretty decent quality. But 1 of mine had the Vulcan while the other 4 had the duratech. The duratech is definitely the engine you want, it has good power, could take a little bit of high revving if ya gotta "give it the beans" and its relatively good on fuel even by todays standards. The Vulcan although reliable and pretty well made, I have to say. It accelerates like a dog being flogged, especially uphill. Another thing, these cars are great as long as you keep the engine and transmission oil and fluids clean

      I had a 98 Taurus "gifted" as a hand-me-down from my grandpa to me as my first car with just something like 20-30k on the odo. The car did not last past 64k. Somehow in that span of time all of the computers died, it had emissions systems problems, electrical issues, the radiator rusted out and clogged the coolant loop while driving on the golden gate bridge, and finally the transmission just totally shit the bed and we crushed that demon.

    I had a 2002 Ford Taurus, and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is no way the suspension is softer in the Mercury Sable. It wouldn't support the car anymore. That being said. I sold it with over 215k on the odometer. I treated that car like dirt, and it just came back for more. The A/C compressor died and caused an overheating issue, but once that was disabled it ran just fine. The headlights were so fogged over that if you didn't use a restoration kit on them every year you couldn't drive it at night. It was rusted completely through on the rear quarter panels, but I made a $25 profit when I sold it. The Vulcan engine is the most boring motor that I have ever had in a car. It doesn't rev, it doesn't make power, it gets mediocre gas mileage, it doesn't sound good, and it's not very light. It takes forever to warm up on a cold day, and there will always be a small oil leak somewhere (mine was so slow that you didn't have to add between oil changes). It will always smell like oil, but you'll never bother to fix it because... you paid $300 for the car... and then sold it for $325 after you put 15k miles on it.

      Turner Pendergrass The car i learned to drive on was 98 Sable that had the Duratec, it was awesome unfortunately the security computer died in it and made the car so unreliable that my parents had to get rid of it.

      Turner Pendergrass i had an '01 Taurus with the duratec and i loved that car. I treated her like dirt too and the thing kept coming back for more, kinda like herpes. The duratec made a much better noise than the vulcan and it was pretty much bulletproof. Tune ups were a pain because of all the damn vacuum lines, and having to remove the upper intake manifold but hey, she ran like a top most of the time. i got her with 116k miles and sold her to my mechanic with 172k due to a fuel pump issue. Ive seen it around town and still looks and runs as it did before the issues. Safe, solid cars but by this time ford had given up on the platform and relegated it to fleet sales.

      David Gonzalez 01 Vulcan, here. It went through 3 or 4 sets of springs (they kept breaking), always pinged and it ... literally ... rusted in two at 75K miles. Always babied it, too.

      +Turner Pendergrass Shit, I'm glad I'm not tne only one who's having a leak issue with the Vulcan. And yes, when hot, the front of the car **always** smells like oil. It doesn't burn it, and the leak's super slow. I add about an eighth of a quart every thousand miles or so, just to be safe. She squeaks like a son of a bitch but never complains otherwise, except when passing. Anything above four grand RPM is borderline dead.

    I know this video is 648 years old, but I had an '01 Sable LS Premium with the Duratec back in my day. It was a great car. Good power (for the time), good features. Complaints? Rear head room and the trunk. It wasn't a bad trunk, per se. There was plenty of room in that trunk, but the opening to it was awful. Still, she was a great car back then. I miss her like I miss the one that got away. Yeah, I traded up to a superior vehicle, but there's not a day that's passed by, even to this day, that I don't miss her and how good she was to me. I wouldn't mind having her back.

    He got it right at the end of the video...these are cars that just keep crawling along. My sister has had 2 of them and they both just kept going, no matter how horrible she treated it. Both were close to 300k mileage when destroyed in accidents.
    They aren't pretty...lots of little things go wrong...they aren't well engineered..but somehow it just keeps plodding along.

      People seem to either thing the taurus/sable was a crap car, or awesome. I personally have had good luck with them. The amount of use and abuse that they can take before the structural components rust out (they will in michigan, and quick) or the transmission gives up the ghost is amazing, especially considering the fact that you can get nice rust free examples for under $1k in florida

    I own a sable GS ( base) and I love it. Yes the engine sucks, yes the suspension could be a little better, but all in all for a first car, I love it. For what it is it's a great car especially since I bought mine at 48947 miles. And I don't regret buying it for as much as I did (4K). It's been a great, reliable, fun car to drive. It's my grocery getting, work transporting, skatepark visiting, state-to-state traveling, filibustering engine, coolant leaking, overly tan, faux trimmed, lovable mid-level luxury sedan. Some of the high points are that it has good trunk space, can comfortably fit 5 people (maybe 6), gets decent gas mileage, and requires very little to no maintenance outside of oil changes, brake changes, windshield wiper Replacements, and headlight cleanings. This car has made my adulthood from 20 to 22 and hopefully even further into the future, yes I will buy more cars but this one will stay around for a very long time ( cause I'm not selling it, or getting rid of it), even if the engine blows I will go find another engine and put it in this car no questions asked. So hats off to Ford for giving me the greatest memories in my favorite car of all time, and to Mabel my 2002 Mercury Sable GS, with your v6 iron block push rod, God speed and here's to many years ahead! 💞⭐🎆🎇🎊🥂🍾

    I have 2 Taurus and a Sable, love them all alot! the Vulcan is a super reliable engine that will just keep on going, but it's slow but it's super damn reliable. I have the Vulcan in both a 99 Taurus SE and a 07 Taurus SEL and I have a Duratech in the Sable. the Duratech is so smooth and speedy and reliable. the Taurus and Sable I can say hands down are some of the most reliable cars ever made. teens beat on them, old people take nice trips in them, single parents are rocking them. family's are rocking them. there just everywhere

    God damn there's so much Pennsylvania in this video. Giant, Redner's and Weis? Damn, so weird understanding those references, lol.
    I can't speak for the Sable but I have a ton of respect for the Taurus, even if they're incredibly gutless sometimes.

    • @johntaurus5399
      @johntaurus5399 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Having had about 15 of them, I've never found one "incredibly gutless", unless it was my '88 with the 2.5L HSC 4cyl and the 3-speed ATX. Even it would cruise at 70 all day long without issue. If you think a 3.0L Taurus is "gutless", then apparently you haven't driven a base (read: 4cyl) Accord or Camry from the same era.

    • @JSW793
      @JSW793 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've driven a 98 Accord with a 2.3 VTEC (which doesn't help my case since their cooling systems like to "buddy up" with the oil ports and ruin everything) which still felt like it had more power than my 97 taurus does. Although to be fair I haven't paid enough attention to do a proper comparison. I'd still rather have the taurus any day. That thing hasn't really let me down yet.

    • @johntaurus5399
      @johntaurus5399 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VTEC Accords are awesome, I'm mostly referring more to the DX and LX models (they are what competed with the Vulcan Taurus). I had a '95 Accord LX (non VTEC), and it was incredibly slow. My '95 Taurus now would run circles around it.
      I had a '97 (Sable, same as your Taurus as I'm sure you know), it was an incredible car. I deeply regret getting rid of it. In fact, it's one of the main reasons I picked up my '95, I missed the '97 so much. The gen 3 ('96+) gained a few HP with the Vulcan but the car got a lot heavier, so they're not as quick as the previous gen in my experience.
      '95 was my favorite body style, which is why I didn't go back with another 3rd gen. I am, however, looking at a '99 and an '03 (4th gen) on craigslist now that need minor repairs. Both cheap, just like this '95 was. I may have a fleet of 'em before long, lol.
      Be sure to change your transmission fluid AND FILTER every 30K or there abouts. If you feel a shudder when accelerating, that's a good sign that the trans needs servicing. DO NOT have it flushed (worse than doing nothing at all), make sure they change the fluid and filter if you have it done somewhere. Go so far as to tell them you want to see the old filter, this way you KNOW they did it (you should also see the trans pan under your car being much cleaner than the rest of the engine/trans, as they're supposed to clean it before putting a new gasket on).

    • @JSW793
      @JSW793 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, funny how you mention the 3rd gens being heavier..on top of that, mine's a GL wagon, but I like the wagons the best anyway. I'm planning on eventually getting something much bigger, but if I were to drive another Taurus it would be a 2nd gen, they're my favorite too.
      The 98 Accord I drove for a bit is an LX and it's my brother's car that I was doing work on, it's nice all around but the F23 series engines aren't something I would favor. They're good in terms of performance, but in design I don't like them. The cooling jackets are wide open at the top and if you're lucky that the head gasket holds together, one could be unfortunate enough to get a crack somewhere in the block that lets oil in (which is what I think is happening to his car) and eventually it has to be constantly flushed until the engine can be replaced or the car can be junked. But man that thing has a fast feel to it. I think it'd be better and possibly more reliable with a V6 in it though.

    • @johntaurus5399
      @johntaurus5399 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I've never trusted Honda V-6s, I'd rather have one of their 4s. I guess that stems from my experience with early Accord V-6s and the Acura Legend, both of which have lots of issues. I hear Honda's current V-6 (used in the Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, etc.) is pretty good and reliable, its just the transmissions in those cars that are not that great.

    I had the 3.0 Vulcan in my '02 Ranger. With 154hp it wasn't very fast or impressive. But it sure was reliable. Outside of regular maintenance I racked 250k original miles on the odometer before I traded her in. Never burned oil between changes either, and still ran and shifted like new the day I sold it.

      Doesn't surprise me. I've owned every Ford product offered with the Vulcan (except the Mazda Mustang....oops I mean Probe), every damn one of them was as reliable as the sun. The Ranger was, by far, the slowest. I don't know why, maybe gearing? Even my '94 and '96 Aerostar Vulcans were quicker than my Rangers (had a '00 auto and a '94 5-spd, the 5-speed was better but still nothing to brag about).

And wear tiny round mirrored sunglasses and a yin yang necklace and black flared pants and tevas and a tie died vintage "save the whales" t-shirt and a pink camo slap bracelet and a mood ring while standing around in front of a Suncoast video smoking Kools and handing out flyers to people for my friend's ska jazz fusion ensemble's performance later that night at this hip shitty bar down town that serves booze to underage kids. I had many of these in 90s models, then one I got cheap through family - a 2003 sable gs with a vulcan, cd-player, cloth seats, adjustable pedals, puddle lamps on the mirrors, keyless entry/remote trunk release - loved it - had it for over 5~6 years until my nephew demolished it. I have a 03 toyota corolla and I absolutely despise my toyota and miss my sable. It still drove like a brand new car at almost 70k on the clock, short of the cat's clogging up and wearing out the last year I had it. Had that fixed, like a new car again. Never had it break down short of a dead battery, never had issues, don't remember a check engine light except when the oil got drained by the corrupt paid informants that had previously been fired - fixed that was good as new. The vulcan motor, while not very powerful, was very, very reliable. I didn't beat on mine by full-throttling it, though I did a bit going through corners hard - it handled like an absolute dream. Would completely love to get another one with more options. Completely recommend it for your kid to drive if you're considering.
    Parts available in any junkyard super-cheap, usually easy to fix and get to, not much guesswork on what to replace. No frills but has just what you need none of what you don't.

      3OD17 These are pretty bad cars, but hey, anything free is automatically awesome. Plus, if you're 16 and it's your first car, it's not bad. 16 year olds, particularly males, have a strong tendency to ruin their first cars, either by crashing them, abusing them, neglecting them or making ridiculous modifications. We've all been there, lol. So what better car to ruin than one that already sucks?

      3OD17 The Sable GS comes with the Vulcan, LS has the Duratec. Vulcan or Duratec, an engine is an engine is an engine. It's all based on personal experience. Yes, the Sable might look like a car for old people but it's definitely not a bad car. Mine just hit 45,000 miles and the check engine light JUST came on now for a bad exhaust sample valve. An easy $40 fix. My channel has some videos of my sable. Check them out if you're interested.

    I got a 2002 Sable LS fully loaded and it was an amazing vehicle. Kinda wish I hadn't traded it and instead just used it as a spare car, but unfortunately being 19 meant high insurance on it even with just PLPD because it was a V6 and was over 100k miles. But you're right, that engine was like pressing the gas pedal into a silk pillow, and it sounded amazing. Nice review.

    I had a 95 Ford Taurus with a 3.0L v6 which was probably the same engine. Had an iron block so it most likely was. It was so heavy and gutless but I paid 200 dollars for the car, put new front coil springs on it for 80 bucks and sold it for 800 dollars after driving it for one winter. That thing never let me down even with a transmission oil leak that I never bothered topping off. After three months the tranny never seized or broke down on me it just kept going. I sold it with the leak and the 30 dollar side cover and gasket to fix it and sent it on its way. No body rust either on this thing and only 80,000 miles but I'm assuming it was really rusty underneath. I didn't even bother to look. If something broke id have just gone to the junk yard and got a new part. The front subframe I know wasnt very rusty at all and it was some seriously tough stuff. The car weighed around 4000lbs so it was built pretty sturdy. I got around 20 mpg and put 20ish bucks in it once a week. It got me to a school and work that winter and that's all that mattered. Weird red interior with white exterior though which was aparantly a rare thing for tauruses. I hope that thing is still running strong

I had the Duratec and I'd never go back to a Vulcan again lol! But the Sable and Taurus have been great cars since its first introduction in 1985. These cars sold well and if they were taken care of held up well too. Can't say that about much cars today!

    my first car was the GM version of this car: a 1997 Buick Century Custom, which, yes, belonged to my grandmother. It was exactly the same in every way: 3.0L v6, 150 hp, 3 tons, only difference was that it has an automatic. It lasted from when I was 16 in the late 2000's... until I was 23, and I sold it for $1000. By the end, the brake pedal turned on the dome light, none of the electric windows rolled down, there was green scum creeping along every rubber seal and moss on the roof from years washed only by Portland rain, and the only maintenance I ever did was replacing the oil that it kept burning off.
    And you know what?

    Funny, this was my first daily driver car. It was the LS trim with DOHC V6 though. I sure as all hell did find it's pain threshold. Took it offroading on multiple occasions, reverse donuts in the high school parking lot, neutral drops constantly, drove it 45 mph off a ramp made of ice and snow. Made it through all of it. Ended up scrapping it in 2014 because the ECU shit the bed for a second time, didn't figure out what it was until we spent days working on it and realized 95% of the suspension was made of rust and only held together with caked mud and sand anyway. The car barely had 150k miles on it.
