- On February 14th, 2024, Lil Garage Live launched "Session With A Legend". The premise: we bring young talent in and provide them with the opportunity to play with a legendary artist in their respective genre, all while filming and recording the experience live.
On our first go-round, we brought in three jazz majors from Montclair State University (Sparni Plath on vibraphone, Mat Leal on trumpet, and Dominic Carnival on bass) and one jazz student from the Manhattan School of Music (Sungtaek Choo on piano).
The four students were ecstatic about playing with Bobby Watson -- a major idol of theirs.
Bobby Watson is a legendary jazz saxophonist who has played with the likes of Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Max Roach, Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter, and Carmen Lundy.
One of his most well-known records was Post Motown Bop, which was released on Blue Note Records in 1991.
He taught saxophone privately at the Manhattan School of Music from 1996 to 1999.
While Victor Jones has played with Bobby Watson for many years, he is also a jazz legend in his own right. He has played with the likes of Stan Getz, James Moody, Michel Petrucciani, Stanley Clarke, Phyllis Hyman, Dizzy Gillespie, and Chaka Khan.
The session turned out to be an amazing life experience for all involved.

It was a fantastic experience getting the chance to work with Bobby Watson and Victor Jones! Thank you to everybody for giving me the chance and privilege of working with you all!
Great job on the trumpet Matt. Now all u gotta do is learn the jazz lingo! lol Thx!
I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to collaborate with the esteemed Bobby Watson and Victor Jones! Thank you immensely for this remarkable experience!
Great job & at the same time awesome learning experience for u! Sure beats going to class & having to take a test after the lecture right? Thx
@sungtaekchoo9123 …great session man!..what chart where you guys playing?
I am so happy and fortunate to be a part of the little garage experience. Nayan did a great thing here. To be able to work with the college students in such a way that it was like on the job training. I just want to say that most of the things that I said to them and the way I conducted them, I received from my elders, and I hope that one day that they could pass that down to the people coming behind them. Let the chain be unbroken. Thank you.
You were awesome my friend. U were the jazz legend yet at the same time the professor. The fact that u came in there & did it all with patience and grace speaks to who u are as a musician and as a person. I think that's one Valentines day those boys will never forget...(until they get married! ; ) lol
Thank u again-
Nayan

Sending a warm salute to the Bobby Watson and Victor Jones, two true musical geniuses who are helping sustain harmony, hope and unity in diverse spaces throughout the world. The amount of students, families, and jazz listener they continue to inspire is priceless. 🎺😃😇🙏

As a Musician i always loved it when Players with world status like Victor and Bobby share their knowledge and inspire young musicians.
You don't always get opportunities to learn from and play with kats like that and from watching the session i believe these young guys did just that.
