Thanks for uploading. Fascinating to see this again. I had a 9072 bought 2nd hand in 1981 and gave many years of good service. BSR turntable was ok.
The cassette deck ran slightly fast, i recall, so anything recorded on the Alba sounded a bit slow when played on any other cassette deck!
There was a circuit diagram in the back of the owner's manual - something you'd never get now. Great to see one of these again!

Hi, I’ve recently acquired a music centre like this from an auction and after being tested when switched on the turntable doesn’t seem to work (it doesn’t start to spin when arm is moved) I’m thinking the belt needs replacing but can’t work out how to get to it, any help would be greatly appreciated as I can’t find a user manual online, cheers!

I have still got my Alba 9073 that I rescued from my mums loft as she was going to throw it out. I bought it in 1979 when I was 21 and had it for years - excellent sound for the price - until I replaced it with another Alba, cannot remember the model number but it was one of the tall type music centres in a teak effect cabinet with glass door on front and flat glass lid - again excellent sound for the price and yes both bought from Woolies.
I gave the 9073 to my mum when I got the second one and we both had them for years until I replaced my new Alba with an Aiwa model as Alba was bought out and the name is just stuck onto Argos cheap stuff now. My mum was going to dump the 9073 back then when I gave her the newer one but I told her then just to put it into the loft. It has a few knocks with being moved by workmen reinsulating up there and the light comes on but no sound at present so I might try and get it checked out. My mother eventually replaced the other Alba because it was teak effect and at the time she wanted mahogany so that one went into the bin as I had nowhere to put it at the time as she didn't want anything else in her loft even though she never went up there herself - just knowing there was stuff up there annoyed her as she is one of these people who has got to get rid of anything not being used.

William Woods Pity about the other Alba, but at least yours lives on. Odd how some people just dump everything that's not being actively used !

River Huntingdon I nearly bought one of these 9072's that was on ebay a few months ago. It had no speakers and the person was not sure if it worked because of this and I was thinking of buying it in case I needed parts for mine as even though the 9073 and 9072 were different models altogether them being from the same time period I reckoned the insides must be pretty standard. Someone else got it for £5 plus postage so hopefully it is going to be fixed and used by them and another one saved.

just bought myself a alba 9073, unfortunately it was very worse for Wear, I.e no plug and lots of wear and tear. I fitted a new plug to it however it's still not receiving power, if you you have any insight on what I could do to bring it back to life I would be very grateful.

I also have an Alba 9072, the cassete deck plays but you cant hear anything, i think some of the capacitors on the board inside need replacing, do you know anyone who can do that, it has a BSR (Birmingham Sound Reproducers) P182 3 speed record deck. :-)
The Sound is fantastic even with the original speakers, my mum bought it new in 1980 from Argos i believe

+James Stephenson Sorry to be so long replying, but it might be the record / playback switch that changes between the two modes acting up, try pressing record, and see if there's a sound from the speakers when you do so, if it sounds crackly, then more than likely that's the cause. They're fairly easy to repair normally with a squirt of Servisol switch cleaner, the same is true of the selector switches that do the Phono, tape, etc :-)

+River Huntingdon hi :) I bought a tape line head cleaning cassette and kept playing it and then tried a audio cassette and it sparked into life. I too think some caps need replacing. It plays in mono which is better than it was. I don't know anyone. I'm in Worcestershire so let me know if you do find anyone as I will drive anywhere to get it done.

+James Stephenson Well, I am quite a way from you myself, being down in darkest East Sussex ! I wonder why the old thing only plays in mono ? Or does it only come through the one speaker ?

+River Huntingdon that would not bother me (distance) if it was being re capped. It plays through both speakers lol. probably a cap gone on the output stage. :)

PA2OLD Not surprising I guess Ben, as you had some good Dutch makes. Alba was sold off to China years ago, and today, well, vuilnis is the word to describe them !
