I think a good candidate for experimenting with the stereo adapter will be the Realistic radio you showed a couple of months ago. It runs on 6 volts, like the Alba, and the guts are fairly easy to access. In addition, I don't think it will be that big a deal if you were to discretely put two matching sockets for connecting the adapter somewhere on the case.
There is only one difference. To enable stereo decoder to work, you have to lower deemphase capacitor right after ratio detector - here it is C318. In mono radio there would be something like 4n7, in stereo there should be only 100p. Deemphase capacitor for mono is here switched by dc supply connector - its C325.
