That’s wild. I had no idea that his show business career was THAT successful before the Monkees came along. And the fact that he performed on the very same Ed Sullivan Show as the Beatles on that cold February evening in 1964 boggles the mind. Was there any interaction? Anyway, it’s no wonder his mother encouraged him to get into acting. Besides his good looks, Davy as a young man simply exuded charisma. Talk about a natural.

Wow, this is just so beautiful! There's no doubt that Davy would've loved this! I find myself very unfortunate that I couldn't have grew up in the 50s-70s, when the music, the people, and just about everything was at it's best! I always liked The Monkees, I played my mom's records and had some of their songs, but after Davy's passing, it drawn me to being even a bigger fan after hearing and reading about him! Davy is so charming, and the other guys seem nice and down to earth without big egos!

Those were the days when actors stayed with their roles. Georgia Brown played Nancy for two years in London’s West End then came to New York and stayed in the role for it’s Broadway run. Davy played Dodger in London, then came to NYC too.
It’s funny looking at him in 1964 and thinking 2 years later he’s going to be a major teen heart throb.
I’ve got his album, obviously after OLIVER, but he was becoming known.

Thank You. The Merv Griffin piece was a surprise for sure. My infinite fascination for all 4 Monkees is still very active. They sure had something/alot......Davy was lucky. I used to look quite a bit like him until puberty took hold and turned me into a man rather quickly. I always wondered how great it must have been to keep that boyish look for so long. I remember also a concert of his when he was 58 yrs. old and he kept going back and forth constantly across the stage while performing.

Funny how life works out. Davy Jones was short and at about 17 he plays Artful Dodger as the 12 years old. I was in a school play in 1968 at 13 and was 5-7 with a deep voice and had to played Fagan to tower over little Oliver. I noticed that davy sang "Where is love" which was the sad song done by Oliver.Davy went to horses at 14 1/2, I went to Intrumental music at 14 1/2 and became very good at it.My deep voice chained me to the bass-lines and Singing was over for me.He has perfect pitch .

Big fan of the Monkees TV show and a few of their songs were good. But the statement that Jones was one of the biggest rock stars of his time is hard to take in - or understand!!! ( co-creator Bob Rafelson commented that Jones "deserves a lot of credit, let me tell you. He may not have lived as long as we wanted him to, but he survived about seven lifetimes, including being perhaps the biggest rock star of his time." He was great Dodger. Very Jack Wilde

    • @VidBrats

Agreed. Granted, Jones and The Monkees had legions of devoted fans but "biggest rock star of his time" or any time is a reach.

I don't believe Jack Wild was in the clip included here. At least I didn't see his credit when I was researching. I believe most of the children (with the exception of Davy Jones) were American since the clip featured the U.S. cast that opened on Broadway. Perhaps Jack was in the British cast when it debuted there before coming across the pond.

There isnt even a 'what if' in the case of Davy.. it was just the time for his heart to stop living ....still as sad as that first day

I looked in the internet for old news about it and I was a bit surprised to hear he died at 53 of mouth cancer.Sad. Seems the two share something in common by having had played the Artful Dodger. BTW Maureen McCormick told about her memories of Davey Jones. Has Butch Patrick said anything ? He was in one episode of the Monkees, the very well known "Christmas Story" episode.
