Well people should know that life is hard, learning is hard and of course acting is hard. No matter how hard you do you'll find some people hate the idea of yours so it's ok. you're talented and you know that^^
There are actors that never went to drama school, I know workshops, coaching ect are a must but a Masters in drama is not nesacery to be a great actor.
You're right, of course, but a list of the most successful actors, or of those who manage to just keep in work, is headed mostly by those who DID go to a drama school (I don't mean a university course) for at least 2 years. Taking the whole thing seriously from the start, full-time, tends to launch careers early, and the exceptions usually have a very special talent, and - well - if they REALLY have a special talent - (or a relative who is a casting-director!) then, yes, they will manage with 2 years of classes. But serious, good, world-changing actors have usually gone to a drama school. I'm not saying drama schools are always good, - GOD knows they are often only ways for pompous, ignorant, out-of-work-actors to earn a living teaching rubbish to unaware newbies, but serious actors still need to study hard on ANYTHING for a few years, even at very average schools, or they dont get far. They just dont. John (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com)
@@rosieposie0426 It is impossible to answer a question like this seriously without knowing you, because all actresses are different and need to learn different things. And this is not a reliable place to send messages, as I may miss them, so please use the 'Contact' page of my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) - that is if you want to try a session of coaching with me to explore all your questions about acting in detail. If not then just do everything you can where you are, do any plays with anyone, study workshops online day and night, do student films, do a massive amount of work because you will be competing with thousands of others, most of whom - fortunately for you - dont work very hard and get nowhere. I’m 14 years old and I’ve always dreamt of become an actor for so long. Watching this guy’s videos are so entertaining to me and I really like how he’s keeps it 100. He doesn’t try to sugarcoat things and I really love that. There are so many people who say all you have to do to be an actor all you have to do is go to a class and get a headshot but acting is so much more than that. It’s a skill and it takes practice.
You're right. SO study some way to earn money so you can AFFORD to be an actor (periods unemployed, photos, classes, etc), or get started early so that you've got more experience of acting jobs than others of your age when you're 18. That's if you want to give it a try. Your parents are welcome to contact me (best though not here, please use the 'Contact' page on the website ( Windsor-Cunningham.com ) or my direct email ( jwcactor@yahoo.com ) Or become a director, a writer, a cameraman , or just get more educatation . . . . You’re absolutely right , when I first started I literally said “ I’ll just go be an actress” bc that’s easier . Easier than going to college or becoming a lawyer or journalist ( all things my mom wanted me to do ), and for a slight moment I thought I would be good at them because they involved in alot of speaking . Which is my specialty. I had the desire to be an actress at a young age and it never left me , so when I was of age to move out & do my own thing I said , fuck it I have to at least try . I came to California ( la ! without even visiting , with the idea that I was going to be on Disney in a week . LOL I was immediately humbled . The work ethic , the vulnerability, the confidence , the work that you must do internally with yourself to carry a career like this , is incredibly challenging. I had no idea I had stage fright until I went to class , I was always class clown so I thought this would be nothing . I discovered how insecure I was with myself internally & externally . There was so much rooted negative self beliefs that I had , that had to be annihilated. I audition for 4 years straight and couldn’t even land a co star until just last year when I booked my first series regular role for a popular show on Hulu. It was mind blowing , by no means was it luck. ALOT had to happen, ALOT of lessons I had to learn before a opportunity like this . I didn’t go to drama school even though I did get accepted to the neighborhood playhouse in Newyork , I didn’t go ( right when I was going to go my intuition told me to stay in California. ) within a few months after I booked my first indie film . Now I worked on this show for a year , and I felt intimidated often by the other actors , one is from London, she’s fabulous and everyone is much more experienced than me . I am the youngest . I had no coach or mentor . However I believe doing the work , actually doing it and learning from your peers is the best teacher . I know I am capable enough to be the story teller I want to be . I actually would like your services , I’ve been watching you for a while . I thought I will email you when I have my next challenging audition. I’m not sure if you coach actors on scenes or if you just coach actors on auditions , I would love if you replied to this . Thank you

I am 55 year old woman, living in Cardiff. As a distraction from the real world and all the ugly, script writing, reading and studying the art of acting, have become my escapism. I have watched many videos, read some book and attended two lessons at the Chapter Art Centre in Cardiff. I probably won't become and actor, but I'll be forever grateful that you took the time to create these videos, they are so helpful. Your voice is amazing, you speak with such wisdom, and I wish I could hire you as my coach. Please keep them coming.
Thank you so much. If you ever do need specific help I do coach on skype and charge the same rates still as stated on my website ( ! ) Best wishes anyway, JOhn WIndsor-Cunningham
Like most of us, I watch a lot of TV and movies. and the more I learn about acting over the years (which is still very little), the more I appreciate what actors do on the screen. I don't just mean big time actors in big movies. I mean the kind of actors people tend to take for granted, like supporting players in run of the mill TV series. These people are highly skilled in ways that aren't immediately obvious until you try it yourself and start picking up a few fundamentals. It's only then that you start to realize the time and work that goes into their training. There are so many little skills you don't even realize you're seeing-- how to turn, where to move, where to look, how to just stand still properly or do unobtrusive background stuff the viewer isn't supposed to focus on. I think TV and movies become much more enjoyable if you develop even a little bit of firsthand appreciation for the work that goes in. These videos certainly help.
John Windsor-Cunningham truly is a great man. He responded to an email recently with honest advice. This video actually summed up everything I needed to know. Thank you again my friend, God speed.
I have said this very same thing forever. Glad you verbalized this reality here. If everyone who wants to be an actor took their training as serious as one becoming an Olympic swimmer, an opera singer, a dentist... ect, people would stop dead in their tracks. it just SEEMS to be so accessible. ( I am a human being, why the hell would I have to go to school to learn how to behave/ act like one?)
I've been playing bass guitar for 20 years and i know its hard to learn a craft. why would anyone think that acting is any less difficult.? Its Art. I think your thinking that people don't know this.
Your videos are fun to watch. I appreciate your down-to-earth style and unapologetic advice. I learned fairly early on that acting wasn't for me. Part of my life held onto a stupid dream that I could become an actor and not have do a lot of work at it in the pursuit. Your point is well said. Acting is a serious trade that requires serious work and devotion. There are no shortcuts, IMO.
Greetings John. I'm a new subscriber. I am a professionally trained stage actor in Montreal, Quebec. Now I work in a smoke meat plant and grateful for being employed. I love acting but hate the business end of it all. Now I'm coaching a friend who's a complete beginner in a community theatre which I intend on joining soon. I actually don't want a career as an actor, so I'll act for free with others regardless of their respective skill level. Discovering your channel snapped me out of depression--LOL.
Well, I sympathize, of course, but it sounds as if your frustrations with the business side of acting hasn't stopped you from seeing the fun to be had in it all, and as long as you find that then little else matters. Best wishes, JOhn
I just found your channel, John, and I am enjoying your videos. Thank you for putting this very important information out there , for free! Like many, I have done community theatre, taking some acting lessons, but many years have passed. I am now 50, and have decided to get back into the game in any venue (does not have to be paid). The irony is I am now 50 and am now in a very different stage of my life. It will interesting to see how I am now casted compared to years back. Thank you again for all this great info!
These are great videos... thanks. Good advice and a nice balance of light hearted and sincere. I'm looking forward to watching more. I'm in my forties now and hoping to take my first acting classes this summer. I'm glad to hear your comments about how much of acting (of everything) is 'hard' work, that sounds like the real fun - figuring things out and gradually getting better. Thank you.
Yes, try to find playwrights you like so that you read everything they've written and find parts you will battle for the chance to play. Make sure you know what you most need to learn - whether connected to your voice or to realizing what 'suits' you and what doesn't, but in the end just DO it as much as you can, anywhere, and be the best person n your classes, by studying for them hard. J.
@@NewYorkActingCoach Thank you for your response John, equally great words of advice and encouragement. I will certainly try to hone in on some playwrights as you suggest. It may sound "corny" but it was a fleeting interest in reading Hamlet (for the first time) that ignited this... determination. I am currently (slowly) working through your videos regarding the British Accent - it's really enlightening and lots of fun to work along with. It's also super difficult as I'm sure you expect/understand. Thanks again - I wish you all the best for your channel - I'm sure it will continue to grow and flourish as long as you continue to provide this unique window into your passion and experience. I will certainly recommend it any chance I get. All the best for now, Mike.
Thanks for kind words. Your idea of diving into HAMLET is great as there are some simple parts in it, and understanding it may help you understand a hundred other plays and screenplays. And be fun. Regarding your work on an accent, forgive me for saying this, but I don't think people care about (or even notice) an accent nowadays, because all they're worried about is whether a person speaks clearly, and is easy to understand, and has some note of warmth or variety in their voice. But you probably already know that, sorry. John
Is drama school necessary? By that I mean BFA. Leaning toward film acting, my question is, should I just take workshops, and classes? I'm assuming it's cheaper and more ethical. Acting for camera, and acting for stage are two different things. I''m inspired by film. Also, not a lot of money to get into any of the good schools.
bmags sorry that nobody responded to you yet. But to tell you the truth: there is not a huge difference between film and stage acting. People tend to think stage acting is to act exaggerated and film acting is realistic.. ever seen someone really angry and throwing a tantrum? That's real eventhough it's big movements and shouting. Trust me if I tell you this: going to theatre classes will help you more as an actor than going to film acting classes. Best of luck!
I am looking at this video because I am endlessly curious about many things. Have been watching Off Camera interviews with Sam Jones and your "How to act 'Realistically' presented itself, which I found fascinating. No interest in being an actor, just really intrigued and frankly amazed at what it takes to practice the craft of acting. Thank you providing these videos.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I always wanted to become an actor and right now I'm quitting my job to become one. I'm entering a life of uncertainty and rejections but i don't care at least i'm doing somethings that i love :)
Leonard Magtoto I am going to board same flight soon . I wish you good luck and great journey ahead . Hard work and true dedication with helpful advices from guru like john will definitely help us to reach to place where do we belong . Give ur 100% ✌🏻
I have been watching many of your video tutorial and definitely they are been very helpful to me to approach acting in a more systematical way. I always believe that I'm a 'Developing Actor' and everyday I want to develop my skills for better performances. Thank you so much Sir.
It’s alot of work. Im a musician and it took alot of work to learn and be in front of people and get over the nervousness, but i did, because i love writing music. Go act! If you love it, you’ll do whatever it takes to be able to act.
Yes, music-making seems a similar ordeal ! But if actors knew at the start that they were going to end up playing very small tv parts once a year they might still 'want' to do it. What's so sad is that if they only worked harder they might end up playing leads. Work uncovers depth. And here's hoping your main opus is in sight too.! J .
I like this. It’s just simply facts and if people are in it bc it’s “easy” then of course it’d be discouraging. I spent a few months thinking about acting again and making it my career. I’m currently 26 and I’ve done a lot of theater as a child and in high school. I actually wanted to become an actor but yknow you just thought you wouldn’t make it. 10 yrs later and I still have this dream and now I’m finally deciding to pursue. I’m going to be taking classes soon. Wish me the best of luck.
John Windsor-Cunningham thank you for replying! I’m very excited about it and since I’m an adult now I feel I have a different and more serious approach. But what do I do? I don’t really know what I should be doing and going. Do I just take classes for a while? I guess that would depend on my goal right? I want to act in film. What should I be doing for the next year?
Nobody can give serious answers to your question without knowing you and seeing the kind of acting-jobs you are likely to get to begin with. Go to a coach, one who has serious experience, me if you like (use my website to contact me, not this please) but ask somebody who sees your work and has serious experience. All anyone can honestly sensibly say as there are so many different paths into acting. John (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com)
when I watch movies or tvs sometimes I try to emulate what I'm watching, from the tone of voice to the expression of the eyes and body movement. would you say this is good practice?
I'm a musician-- but it's all to easy to draw parallels. I'm learning a great deal from your videos in abstract, but nonetheless invaluable, ways.Thank you.
Just a science student who loves acting and writing. (Was sitting with a friend in a lecture hall and not knowing a lecture in that hall were to take place. A woman asked me to be the main character of her storyline that still has to be approved & acted out in June/July. I'm so happy, excited & scared. I said Yes. Thank you John for your great videos and advice. Subscribed immediately!
@@dumbassputa1818 i did it & they were amazed when they heard im a sckence student. one of the judges asked me for my name & cell number! & said that i should always go pop up at her office to enquire about any dramas, the National theatre might need someone new. I was excited! If it wasnt for covid-19, i mightve done something big by now**
I imagined myself being an actor, and I loved this idea but when I looked up the things I have to do, I knew it was not gonna be easy I always do that, I try to do something like singing for example then I fail and I don't try again simply because I don't really want it, but I think this time is different I hope so Thank you for this, will continue watching your videos
Thank you! I'm going to be getting my degree in acting/theatre/performance and am currently doing some individual research on Commedia Del'Arte (i hope i spelled that right). Some advice id give is, never stop learning.
I don't want to sound as if I am disagreeing with you, but we learn most about acting by DOING it, and as much as possible, If we accept work almost anywhere (or find expert classes) all the time then we just 'find' that we keep learning. The process should be fun. John
Great points! To think I could just fall into a successful acting career is disrespectful to what you all did to prepare. I've been doing software, graphic art and and database development for 20+'years, and didn't reach my level without putting in the time. That being said, I did all that because I LOVED doing it... So the initially poor paycheck and low respect I received initially felt okay, because I was doing the things I wanted to do. It all makes more sense now. Thank you for this lesson.
Yes, but the 'preparation' you choose may decide what jobs you get. What kind of part suits you? (No actors can play every kind, Clooney can't (probably) play unkind roles very well, and Streep probably can't play a drug addict). And where you do you want to work (maybe you should be doing classes THERE and building up some contacts NOW. And how many plays have you seen and read n the last week, or screenplays, so how do you compare with other actors who want your jobs and do double your study? Don't just go to any class. Maybe do commercials now! Or maybe not, and read all of Shakespeare 3 times. John Windsor-Cunningham
@@NewYorkActingCoach thank you AGAIN. This last weekend I attended a workshop with a theater group "Plague Mask Players" in Dallas, and last month got a speaking part in a film and a featured extra part in another. As a technicial creature I love film (and do filming and editing for friends and family), but connecting with that theater group opened my eyes even further. I will continue to press in and absorb all I can from those more experienced than I. And for now... More of your great videos!
+John Windsor-Cunningham KNowing about the field is definitely something im working on, i understand it takes time. I also understand that we all have it, but some of us just dont know it yet. Lucas
that is the question.... obssesed by acting from my early ages and go to the other way in life ...but every now and then the question still hunted me ......!!!!!
taher asffor it will be forever once the seed of acting is sowed it won’t stop until we breathe . It’s better to nourish it use for hobby if not profession . As it gives overall a great improvement.
First of all, thank you for the uploads! However, you are right, though, that I shouldn't be watching this video. This is because it is true that when I "consider" to be an actor, I thought it is something that everyone can "try" it out. I guess I will take the advantage of the internet to say this "publicly," that I now know the fact that I am just a lazy bum! The saddest thing among all this is not one lives like a pig, but one could not stand to accept the fate of being a pig. I always want to be something different, at least, be "proper". I am living like "most" of other university students, wasting precious time. I feel powerless. Again, thank you for the video(s). I really enjoy and appreciate them :)
Piece of advice if comes in effect there will be Shortage of actors in world as 80% actors or aspiring actors do not study that deep Thai craft . I myself find so difficult but I do believe to be best i need to give 2 years and than see if I learnt well ! This is so true this video is simply awesome 👏🏻

sometimes i feel like it’s impossible for me to become something as good as an actress because of the life that i live. i didn’t grow up rich and i live such a normal life here i. Texas and i have basic mexican parents who don’t believe in dreams like that. but then i remind myself that i’m very different from the rest of my family and i have such a huge passion for acting and becoming a different person. You inspired me so much! I want to start acting, i'm 20 and I want to aim high, and I know it's a long term game but I'm from Italy and here there is not a lot to do so I was thinking about moving to Australia to study acting and build curriculum, and then after like 4-5 years of experience moving to LA - Do you think it can work? I know that if you are from Europe and you wanna move to LA you have to first be famous in your own country, but i wanna live abroad. Do you think this is a good plan to aspiring getting famous? Is it better to start in Italy, becoming "somebody" here and then moving to LA?
Your questions are very serious, because what you decide will effect your whole life. Please use the 'Contact' page on my website ( Windsor-Cunningham.com ) or my direct email ( jwcactor@yahoo.com ) or talk to another professional, as there are issues of visas, talent, agents, unions, language and finance which can only be explained after knowing what you are like, as all actors are different. I have the same problem and plans. I didnt know that you have to be famous in your own country first and move to LA later until I read this comment. I'm just curious and sorry for asking this if its too personal but did you change your plans after 1 year?
I like this video, because although John doesn't "encourage" or "discourage" you in his advice/statement, it can still easily encourage or discourage you in your decision
+Hubert cumberdale Oh dear, sorry, but reading books is not the way to understand acting, really. Try and spend time doing it, with an amateur group, a school group, a few friends making a video, anything, better than reading. The problem with books is not knowing what they really mean! Maybe try reading lots of plays. That could help you learn more. John
Hi John, could you possibly do more accent videos please as I am Australian so a British accent isn't to complicated so I'd like to learn an American accent if this would be possible. Thanks!!
I want to become an actor and I've no idea about until I have watched some of your great videos on emotional development and how to act realistically and many more. These videos were really so great and inspirational. However thank you Sir for your great lessons ☺
+YøgësH RâJ Thanks for kind words. DOnt get carried away with being inspired, try and find a way to actually do acting, with a loval group, or school group, or course, or local film-maker. Actually doing it is the trick to fnding out what parts of it you might be good at. Sorry for this pushy answer! Best wishes, John
Hello! I have a question. To become an actress what kind of classes should we take? Like to be more talented? And how to understand what kind of scenes can you act? Like if you're talented in crying or like being a soft person in the act. And where should you start as like a teen?
SOrry, I miss most messages here. Impossible to answer without knowing what you're like, and seeing the kind of acting-jobs you're likely to get. I can only suggest you ask your parents if you can do one session on skype with me (they are very welcome to be in on the session as you are young) and we can cover all of your questions about different schools, methods, career paths etc then. Up to you. But get in touch through the website please on the 'Contact' page at www.windsor-Cunningham.com. Or I'm happy just to do a session about and it all with just your parents. Just be careful whom you ask for help as there are idiots around who are only after your money (and this is true as the actors union is taking some of them to court!) John
You're hell of a Brit. Not to mention an amazing teacher too! I'm a degree student and I've never acted anywhere yet. But I'm sort of an artist, I can draw and paint well, and I hear about me having a good taste of music. I'm kinda better in my language skills too and now learning Japanese (although that doesn't relate here). Art, kind of runs in our family. I remember having done a little acts when I was in school and having got the loudest applause. Now I think that may be I should put my shyness off n get in some auditions, participate in college dramas, but I doubt if that will take me any further. I'm already starting too late.
Well, be careful who you ask for help. There are people the actors union is taking to court for promising introductions to agents etc etc when they've no real experience! If you want help with anything specific let me know through the 'COntact' page of my website or my direct email jwcactor@yahoo.com as I often miss messages here. But all you probably need is to just join some local group and see how you feel about it. John
John Windsor-Cunningham Thank you for your advice and support, sir. I'll certainly follow your instructions and let you know if need any help. Thanks for sharing your email address.
+Michael Del Moral Thanks for kind words. The question you ask is so huge that I'd need ages to say anything new. Just go out and do it, Get a camera and make films, after being an intern with any director who'll take you. And go to film school obviously if you're serious. JOhn
Yes, of course. I coach on Skype. But best not to contact me here on this, - please use the 'CONTACT' page on my website w.Windsor-Cunningham.com Thank you for your interest. John
Enjoyed your videos as always. As a person that took drama class all the way through high school and actually enjoyed it, as well as took on some small projects like a short student film, kapa haka (NZ performance) and so on, what advice would you give me to start? Do notice that im in New Zealand and film industry here is very small I do have a plan to move up north to try for an acting school in Auckland which I have to go through auditions to get in that has limited space. Any advice on that as well?

Hi John. I’ve just discovered your channel after looking into acting more seriously. Do you think there’s too old of an age to start acting seriously or professionally? I’ve never done any acting and I’m in my late 20’s. Your videos and your channel have been very insightful.
Many people start when they are your age, or older. But every actor is different and I would need to see you on Skype for a session before I knew what you need to learn and what kind of acting-jobs you may get. If you want coaching please do not use this site to send me messages about that as they can get lost. Use the 'Contact' page on my website ( Windsor-Cunningham.com ) or my direct email ( jwcactor@yahoo.com ), or find a coach you can trust near where you are. to advise you. John Windsor-Cunningham
I think it's called "Clear Vision Parallel" and it's just one of the electronic choices of music on the 'Edit' system of Premier elements, which one can just click and drag onto a video. I don't know any more about it sorry. Thanks for looking that far anyway! John Windsor-Cunningham
Honesty, passion.Try it and then decide.Golf says if you think you can or can't your probably right.Do the work, get professional help.Dont practice your mistakes and be intentional.
Impossible to answer that question in a few lines, as all actors are different with different needs. If you like you could come to me for a session and I could suggest what courses would be of most use to you (when I know what kind of acting-work you want to do) - and which country you should work in, agents, what type you may already be able to play, or to start classes with somebody else until you're ready for advanced work on auditions. But you don't need to come to me, just google for advice near where you live. But anyway, for me, not here, please, - use my email jwcactor@yahoo.com However you may find classes where you already live that you can do to with others who are beginners, which makes you feel confident. John Windsor-Cunningham
I'm just here to listen to your voice. It's very engaging, and like John Nettles, you have that happily faculty of speaking really clearly while not moving the mouth about too much. It's a fascinating skill.
Hello! I am currently a sixteen-year-old who has acted starting around two years ago. I feel that currently(as both my school and play were canceled) I am unsure as of what to do to practice acting. If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them. Thank you for your videos! I have really learned a lot from them.
What you ask is important, if you continue to be serious about 'acting'. Because your age may be your biggest advantage since directors and casting people will not expect you to have done anything much yet, but by the age of 19 they will expect you to have attended classes and done some actual acting jobs. If you want to try a session of coaching on skype with me then ask your parents (and perhaps have them in on the session), and don't leave messages here - as I may not see them - but please use the 'Contact' page on my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) John Windsor-Cunningham
Yes, I am mad. I am a nurse and love to act. I am a trained dancer. I used to film myself doing my dance routines in my backyard. I love to entertain. I do acting for fun and not for approval.
I rarely see messages here, and if you need help or coaching better, please, to use the 'contact' page on my website or my email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) and, regarding your point here, no actor should really be looking for approval, but 'giving' some kind of ideas to people. But enough. Best. John
I wanted to start learning acting for quite sometime now, but there are no acting classes at my city (I'm not allowed to go to any other city, alone that is). Plus i don't have a room to take online classes in, since a share a room and we can't afford acting classes cause they are really expensive. Does anyone have any advice?
Well, be careful what advice you get first! It's easy to find out who I am, and not to worry because my website ( Windsor-Cunnningham.com ) has everything about me, and your parents would be welcome in any coaching session if you wanted one. But you are not in prison, and you can practice clear speaking, and be the best reader of anything at school, and get advice from teachers, and read 30 recent plays and screenplays, each a few times, which will be almost as good as going to some small drama school, and then see if you still want to act. But be careful: there are some very poor teachers out there who will waste your time and just want your money, and a few who are better than me! Find them! John Windsor-Cunningham
@@NewYorkActingCoach thanks for the advice:) I've seen countless videos where people tell 'me' that I can't do anything besides taking classes so i got really anxious and sad. Of course i sould take classes in a year or two when my sister moves out and i am old enough to work, but i don't want to just wait while those two years pass by, because in those two years, i could be making something much more meaningfull. Thank you again, I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and learning more about acting. :)
I do wish you luck, and hope you find enough scenes to work on, enough plays and screenplays to read, and enough friends from coaching workshops, to get you to the point where you 'know' the kind of parts you can play, the ones you enjoy and are should aim for at auditions. You can get a full night's sleep after that! John Windsor-Cunningham
Happy to help. but I often miss messages here so please us the 'contact' age on my website (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email jwcactor@yahoo.com and of course the answer depends on what kind of directing you want to do. I think you'd need to try a session with me (I charge as little as possible, - about a quarter of what others with my experience charge! -and be careful who you ask for help as there are people making promises out there who are villains! (Many being taken to court by the actors unions) John
What would you say to someone who loves arts and performing and wants to go to school for drama/theater but their parents won’t pay for it and they can’t pay for it on their own?
It depends on how much you want it, whether you are willing to do awful jobs to pay for classes and put up with periods of unemployment, and play lots of small parts. Then if you try that and you don't like it and can't manage it then you know you don't want it enough, but if you try it and it's very difficult but you keep going - then you do want it.. Ask your parents to contact me if you like, but not here as these messages can disappear, use the 'Contact page' on my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com ) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) John Windsor-Cunningham
Hey John, I am 14 years old and live in missouri and I plan on taking drama next year in high school, is it possible for me to start at this age? I live in Missouri and there isnt many auditions I can attend to, do you have any advice for this? I could wait until I'm older to move to a place with much more available auditions but I would love to start with something small at my age, do you have any sort of leads or advice on how I can take advantage of my location and age. Is there any online programs that can help maybe?
Your question is important. But first I think you must show my reply to your parents so that they know who you are getting advice from on the internet. If they go to my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) they will - hopefully - see for themselves that I am a professional acting coach, and my answer to you MAY be worth thinking about. The answer is this. Starting young is a very big advantage, because by the age of 20, when others are just starting, you will already have done some work and be more experienced and of more interest agents and drama schools. Google search for classes for young people in your area (and be sure they are run by somebody with experience, and do ANY plays or student films at colleges. Your parents are welcome to reach me through the 'Contact page' on my website. John Windsor-Cunningham
@@NewYorkActingCoach Thank you very much for this advice! I will show my parents your reply and see where I could take it from there. This helps a lot!
I feel that acting is almost twice as much work because you have to learn the character's profession in a way. For instance learn the medical lingo and how and why a Dr would act a certain way.
You are competing with hundreds of other actors, some of whom have spent years studying how to play parts which suit them most, knowing yourself well, in detail, and understanding scripts n a way which the average person would never manage EVER. If you work day and night on parts then there's a chance of success. If you don't there's a good chance of none. The fun, the friendships, the personal growth and the confidence come from dedication. John Windsor-Cunningham
Well, there are, of course, 'crazy' parts in some films and plays, Jennifer Lawrence being happy to play them, but if you want to see the 'straight', serious, calm side of a character you have to find some hidden part of yourself that is like that. John
Hello Sir, I would really need your advice for something... I'm a 17-year-old boy that lives in Upperaustria and I definitely wanna be an actor because for me it's more as just a passion...it's my live, i can't live without watching actors and their work and practise acting and more..... So i definitely wanna be an actor for living the only thing is that I don't know how to start a career proffessionally...in Upperaustria are no agencies, no filmstudios, nothing....nothing where I could start to audition.....All of that stuff is in vienna..... so....what should I do? I really want to start my career as soon as possible. Thank you

I can't say more without knowing what you are like, so if you want a coaching session on Skype to discuss all of this then please use my email address (jwcactor@yahoo.com) not this here, and I'll send you more details. Or google for an acting-coach where you are (and I promise you there will be somebody). John Windsor-Cunningham
Thanks for the video john jowever i still have a huge debate in my head that getting past a drama school Doesn't ensure that you will be getting roles as there aren't any for the people of colour(except for black) . Look at the movies nowadays(critically acclaimed movies) many roles are either for black or white people,im brown and tge last oscar worthy movie that i saw was lion. . Excuse for my weak english as its not my first language
I understand the problem of the 'debate' you say you're having with yourself. In the end I think it all depends on how much you want to act - WHATEVER the consequences, whether you make a living at it or only manage part-time not mattering as long as you are able to do some acting. And you may not know how much you want it until you do a serious course of classes. And maybe not even then. Acting is a difficult life. There is also the need to be good at it, which makes your color nothing to do with what parts you play. I am not pushing anyone to have coaching sessions with me, but if you need more advice then please use my website to contact me. But the job involves a huge amount of hard work.

Thank you for being realistic. Nothing worthwhile is easy, with enough determination and motivation anyone can do anything.
Thank you

Most people don't.
Absolutely! Acting is an abstract skill with a physical manifestion as performance. Great video, as always! ❤️👌
John
@@NewYorkActingCoach It would be fair to say I know nothing, or at least very very little. So thank you again and I will definitely keep it in mind.
You are absolutely right acting it's not a joke you got to work hard.

I mostly just like your videos and what you have to say and how you say it "accent" I'm already set on becoming a voice actor.
John Windsor-Cunningham

that is the question.... obssesed by acting from my early ages and go to the other way in life ...but every now and then the question still hunted me ......!!!!!
taher asffor it will be forever once the seed of acting is sowed it won’t stop until we breathe .
Well . . thanks! John (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com)
John Looking forward to learn from you more ,Honestly till date have found that honest acting coach to show up facts with that much transparency . Wish you everything great. Thank you : Ameen sharma
Any job where you have to deliver lines ("how are you today?") is an acting opportunity
Yes, well said! J.
Sir u are a pioneer
You are such an incredible person...!
The most amazing thing about acting is that one can fulfill a lifetime of unfulfilled dreams!!!!
Sir! I recently got to know about your channel. It helped me understand a lot of things, a lot of nebulous things have become clear. Thank you for doing this. I love acting, I want to become an actor. Currently, I'm working as a voice actor and I wish to get engaged in physical acting too. Thank you for these videos, I really appreciate it. Btw, I decided to be an actor because I love the thrill and challenge of playing somebody else, that's my drug. Hehe.
I have decided long ago..i Just dont know where to start...i am Always in character ..soo much that i dont do daily things with out being somewhere else. Thankyou for your videos
sometimes i feel like it’s impossible for me to become something as good as an actress because of the life that i live. i didn’t grow up rich and i live such a normal life here i. Texas and i have basic mexican parents who don’t believe in dreams like that. but then i remind myself that i’m very different from the rest of my family and i have such a huge passion for acting and becoming a different person. I know it’s not easy and i know it’s a lot of hard work but i think i have some acting talent and i just really want to make it. i support everyone here in these comments, go out there and chase your dream ! work for it and just try it out. Anything is possible. ❣️
I want to help, but many people write to me claiming poverty and wanting me to give them free coaching who are simply too lazy to go out and get acting work on their own, and I dont know you, and I dont know if you want serious help or are just another one of those. But I do want to help, so if you send me more details of what you have TRIED to do in order to be an actress I may do a session with you that will advise and help. But dont leave messages like that here, please, as people may try to exploit you as well as me, instead please use the 'Contact' page on my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) and explain to me what you have already done to show that you are serious about wanting to act please. I will remove this reply in a few days. John Windsor-Cunningham
Nobody can give you advice about this without seeing you - perhaps on Skype - and this is not the place to swap messages as they can get lost. John Windsor-Cunningham
What are the best books on acting?
+Hubert cumberdale Oh dear, sorry, but reading books is not the way to understand acting, really. Try and spend time doing it, with an amateur group, a school group, a few friends making a video, anything, better than reading. The problem with books is not knowing what they really mean! Maybe try reading lots of plays. That could help you learn more. John
+John Windsor-Cunningham thanks John!
Eventhough I agree with John... The Power of The Actor by Ivana Chubbuck is great
Hi John, could you possibly do more accent videos please as I am Australian so a British accent isn't to complicated so I'd like to learn an American accent if this would be possible. Thanks!!
this helps me a lot. thank you, sir.
You're welcome. John Windsor-Cunningham
John
John Windsor-Cunningham
Thank you for your advice and support, sir. I'll certainly follow your instructions and let you know if need any help. Thanks for sharing your email address.
Fantastic Video. I want to become a director. Do you have any advice on how to start getting into the film industry?
+Michael Del Moral Thanks for kind words. The question you ask is so huge that I'd need ages to say anything new. Just go out and do it, Get a camera and make films, after being an intern with any director who'll take you. And go to film school obviously if you're serious. JOhn
for me acting is not potraying a character but more of becoming it, if u know what i mean,I really enjoy your videos its real, thank u very much
You right point blank.
Do u have any online classes or something to teach people across the world how to do acting or a acting coach type thing
Do notice that im in New Zealand and film industry here is very small
I do have a plan to move up north to try for an acting school in Auckland which I have to go through auditions to get in that has limited space. Any advice on that as well?
HI. Impossible to answer your question here, it would take too long. and messages here may disappear. Please use the 'Contact page' on my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) Thanks, John Windsor-Cunningham
don't go into acting to be rich, famous, expect to work hard, invest in lots of training, and realize there is no security or guarantee of payoff
Yes. But the endless hard work, on dozens and dozens of scripts, needs to be FUN as well! John Windsor-Cunningham
@@NewYorkActingCoach so true, I would suggest starting as young as you can, it takes lots of energy to do acting, lots of people overlook this
You are super professional & completely helpful$ Thank You Dear, I Belief N Myself!
You're welcome! If you want more specific help I coach on skype and in New York and charge as little as possible! Best found through not here but through the 'contact' page on my website (if wanted) www.Windsor-Cunningham.com
John Windsor-Cunningham OMG, Thank You so much for caring enough to reply me & offer me your amazing & convenient services. Thank You once again.
Great video.
Hi my question is that how old would you have to be to earn an shot to becoming an actor without any experience
Thanks for the Very Candid Talk.
Thanks for the advice it really touched me + I really like the music at the end dose any one know where i can find it ?
I think it's called "Clear Vision Parallel" and it's just one of the electronic choices of music on the 'Edit' system of Premier elements, which one can just click and drag onto a video. I don't know any more about it sorry. Thanks for looking that far anyway!
John Windsor-Cunningham
Honesty, passion.Try it and then decide.Golf says if you think you can or can't your probably right.Do the work, get professional help.Dont practice your mistakes and be intentional.
i have decided long ago..where do I start?? Thankyou for your videos.
@@NewYorkActingCoach thankyou very much for your kind reply and your time..I will email soon.
I'm just here to listen to your voice. It's very engaging, and like John Nettles, you have that happily faculty of speaking really clearly while not moving the mouth about too much. It's a fascinating skill.
+dangoat2009 Yes, Nettles does sound a little like me. JW-C
It's a lovely thing.
I'm your new subscribe/student🙏🙏 you are amazing, ❤ love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
It's easy to find out who I am, and not to worry because my website
( Windsor-Cunnningham.com ) has everything about me, and your parents would be welcome in any coaching session if you wanted one.
I already knew my answer before I clicked, wish me luck.
John Windsor-Cunningham
that was some great advice. i shall. and yes i knew it was hard. Otherwise i could have already done it, no?
Well said, yes. It should also be fun after a while, but the main trick is to put in hard work. John Windsor-Cunningham
What acting schools would you recommend (in Canada)?
I would love to become a director. how would you suggest I go about archiving this?
I think it might actually be harder then other careers, but it’s the only thing I think I can do.
Thanx
I am crazy. I want to learn how to act like I'm not crazy.
Well, there are, of course, 'crazy' parts in some films and plays, Jennifer Lawrence being happy to play them, but if you want to see the 'straight', serious, calm side of a character you have to find some hidden part of yourself that is like that. John
@@NewYorkActingCoach hopefully I can just find somewhere I fit. Looking the part and helping to I guess fill out the scene. I'm good with that.
@@myfirstcrappyvideobilly Also, being myself without inadvertently making random people think I'm crazy might be good.

Hello Sir, I would really need your advice for something...
I'm a 17-year-old boy that lives in Upperaustria and I definitely wanna be an actor because for me it's more as just a passion...it's my live, i can't live without watching actors and their work and practise acting and more.....
So i definitely wanna be an actor for living
the only thing is that I don't know how to start a career proffessionally...in Upperaustria are no agencies, no filmstudios, nothing....nothing where I could start to audition.....All of that stuff is in vienna.....
so....what should I do? I really want to start my career as soon as possible.
Thank you

I can't say more without knowing what you are like, so if you want a coaching session on Skype to discuss all of this then please use my email address (jwcactor@yahoo.com) not this here, and I'll send you more details. Or google for an acting-coach where you are (and I promise you there will be somebody).

I'm prepared to like all people!
John Windsor-Cunningham at Windsor-Cunningham.com
