  • Coming up to 2024 and another free acting-lesson (meaning no commercials) from New York and Skype Acting-Coach John Windsor-Cunningham , - here reminding actors the importance of what is BEHIND every line, and how it can be different to what the words first seem to mean.

    I try and use this method when I’m singing a song. Anything repeated in a song has to mean something and is an extra layer. We don’t just repeat something to fill space. Words in a song can sometimes mean exactly what the character wants to say - or the complete opposite.... but it’s always some version of the truth.

    I was reminded of a line from Hamlet while watching this video. "...But if you mouth it, as many of your players do, I had as lief the town-crier spoke my lines."
    This is such great advice. I'm starting out in acting myself and I've found that one of my biggest challenges so far in drama school is making choices that are truthful to me. This advice really helps a lot because if I decide what the sub-text is behind the line, it will help narrow down which are the appropriate, truthful choices I could make when speaking the lines.

    • @NewYorkActingCoach
      @NewYorkActingCoach  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right, except - secretly - you must work harder than anyone else on whatever you prepare for your classes - (and "secretly" so that everyone thinks you just managed to do things quicker and more easily because of your age!) That way they forget your age and you stand out as the star of the class. Do the work, sitting up nights to work out EXACTLY what lines you have to say really mean. "Hello" could mean "Where the hell have you been!" or it could also mean "Come and have a drink!" What it doesn't and CANNOT mean is 'hello' . B Pitt and D Hoffman stay up all night the day before they do a big scene. All NIGHT. It's why they are who they are. Don't think of yourself as "24" - but as a hard-worker. John Windsor-Cunningham

      @NewYorkActingCoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome, and thanks for your kind words. Your age is your biggest advantage because no casting director will expect you to have done anything yet, and in fact you could be reading dozens of plays and deciding the parts you want to play, and reading screenplays before you watch a film. Your parents are welcome to fire a few questions at me, if you want me to convince them how serious (and difficult) an acting career is, but tell them to use the 'Contact' page on my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com), please, as I miss many messages here. Yes, the 'accent' videos were a few years back, but they are still about right; and remember that nobody listens to an accent for long - they just assume you are from 'some' part of the UK, or that you were brought up in both countries! What audiences are interested in is what you are like in the part, funny or powerful or shy - or whatever - they are not listening to your accent. Not if you make sense of the lines anyway! John

      Start early, do student films in colleges and community theatre plays, or amateur ones online. That way you'll discover if you really want to, and gain experience in advance, or will learn to use any confidence you gain from it (perhaps in the way you speak for example) in some other line of work. Or start writing plays, and get to know editors and others. Or use your energy to work hard at something else completely. But WORK at it in some way, or at something else.

I wanna learn as much as possible, and I’m trying to that by watching videos like yours, even though it’s not even close to an actual school. Please tell me: Is there an acting style that you recommend we study? I see a lot of mesiner and method around. Hi John, been watching for a while, for the longest time I’ve wanted to be an actor. I’m 16 as of current and I went to barbizon when I was 11 but didn’t end up doing it because of the price :(. I just started taking classes @Star2b which is a local theater group and I’m also doing a musical even tho I don’t sing so I can get experience and be more confident and less shy. I literally can’t imagine myself being anything else but acting. The way I see it is I have one life , once chance and I don’t care about what others think about me because I come from an athletic background as well (playing 4 different sports, I’m a photographer and I help my parents business with marketing) and they would make fun of me because I like acting but that’s not important. I’m a few weeks in and the 1st 2 weeks I was shy and was hard to read my monologues and the 3rd week came and something happened!! All the acting videos I’ve watched from many creators and many hours including your videos I used for the first time and MAN IT FELT GREAT!! I acted out the “Mind Trick” Monologue and everybody told me I did really well and I think out of my 16 years was one of the happiest moments of my life. I want to be a film actor one day because I think that acting out a script and having that relationship with another actor is so dang cool! I love acting and cannot wait to go back to class every week. I also loveee movie sets, they always have interested me and working on one would be a dream come true. I’m sorry for writing this much but there is so much I can say about acting and how much I love it. The musical I’m doing right now is called “Little Shop of Horrors” and I’m having a great time although sometimes I still feel shy but I’m so happy I’m doing this and it’s my dream job one day. I will let nothing stop me even if it means living the rest of my life broke. If I can act in films and go to set for work everyday I’ll be happy 😊 I pray to god every night about being an actor because if this is the only chance I get, I don’t want work a normal job because I know I can do things greater like inspire people and touch people through films. Sorry for writing so much but I just want to thank you for your videos on acting, they inspire me a lot!!

    when i was a kid i used to think people were intuitive and would respond to implied meanings. since being older I realize the response to obvious meanings is a slight improvement. I've become super obvious as a way to deflect blame. still, i say most things in such a way that I don't encourage anyone to believe me. it's interesting to me. like i'm daring others not to believe me, so maybe they'll screw up later. implied meanings are fun. you're fun too.
    I have a lot of practice exercises on stuff like emphasis of words in sentences, and changes in meaning, I only play them out in my head. not for acting though, psychology as a hobby.

    Thank you for this video, it's extremely helpful to have acting be described as an art form where you need to look deeper than surface level on why they are doing things. I've only been in a few school shows and I'm excited to get to look at auditioning and playing characters with this new method and work towards doing the best that I can in acting

    • @NewYorkActingCoach

      Sorry, but I'm not a great one for books about acting, people should be doing it or talking about it, but there are lots of books which can inspire actors and beginners should find them on their own, because then they read the words in a more 'personal' way. Google the subject or go to a bookstore and see what interests YOU. John Windsor-Cunningham

    Hello sir John Windsor-Cunningham, I am 15 yrs old and dreaming to reach my fullest potential on acting and a successful career. I have been inconsistent acting on our school plays because I tried to do some experiments on my acting, some are really good in my opinion and some really... not that good enough for an aspiring actor. Now I think I really found my technique on acting that you taught me and know to myself that I have potential to be an actor. My worry is, if I become an actor (If I pass the auditions), my classmates will be judging me saying that I'm not good to be an actor because I didn't do good enough on one particular play that they laughed at me because even to myself, I knew that I sucked there. That thing holds me back and maybe the reason I won't even go and audition. Can you motivate and inspire me please!!!! Advance Happy New Year!! 🎆🎇

    • @NewYorkActingCoach
      @NewYorkActingCoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all it is great that you do not think you're perfect! I have coached many actors who were terrible at things they started with, one who is successful in films but was terrible in Shakespeare when she started, and another who is very successful on the stage but could never keep still for a film-camera when he began. But this is not the place for me to give you more advice because messages here can be lost or missed. Best to use the 'Contact' page on my website (Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email (jwcactor@yahoo.com) and to show your parents who I am from my website (or by googling my name) as your parents should know I am a professional coach. I coach on skype or in New York, but you may just want somebody who lives near you. Starting young is your greatest advantage, most actors start at 21 so they can all look the same!
