  • In this video, we go from start to finish on all the major carvings laid out in the last video. I'm a total beginner at carving, so this is less of a "how to" and more of a "this is how I did it" as a newbie.
I go over the carving tools I use, as well as the steps and processes I used to go from the simple moulding line carving to the complex C scroll carving these are known for.

Intimidating! But well done and thank you for all the effort to not only carve it but to film it and share it!

The American Pioneer videos are definitely the way to go before embarking on this venture, they give a really expert view of this complicated skill. you will find it much easier to get a uniform vee groove if you use a short section of triangular file welded to a cranked handle, the secret is to get the file flat down on the stock, any angle tends to deepen the cut and give a ragged edge to the groove. @@davidwhiren817 Jim has now sold the company that produces these excellent instructional DVDs, but if you do a search it comes up with the new supplier. Good luck, you will get a lot of information, and confidence from watching the many DVDs available. Chris B.

Carving is a lot easier than everyone seems to think it is. The hardest part is to quit being afraid of it and do it for the first time. Now lets see you do some engraving on it!

Great job on your carving. Cortney and I have two hard cherry trees (and five oaks) that the wind blew over and we are looking into a local mill to fashion them into planks/blanks. It will be interesting to see if I can carve something without ending up in the ER. Thank you for the fine content.

I've just started working with bone inlay on some wheel locks I've been building My biggest tips when doing something like this is
    take your time, sharpen often
It's okay to pour blood sweat and tears into your build, but blood makes for a terrible stain

i dont have the confidence to even think about attempting this. I'm only at the point of beginning to consider some light tackwork on one of my traditions rifles
For a first attempt at something like this on this scale and all that, you did great!

Thanks for sharing this. As another beginner, ... with far less artistic talent I might add, I've often looked for some example closer to my level, with the detail your showing. I really appreciate it.

I really like those single line checkering tools, but boy they are pricey.

Think I would have started with a much less expensive rifle that the Kibler but you look like you are doing ok. Got to start somewhere I guess. I envy anyone who can carve or especially engrave. I mean one wrong cut or strike of a chisel and it's like well how do I fix that. Have to really know how to read the grain in wood or metal. Don't know if I could hold out to do it anyway now because of the stiffness in my hands and fingers. Good luck you are doing fine...

Those Kibler kits are just brilliant I would love to get one but don't live in the US. So no go. Did you watch Jim's video they are great I think I must have watched them 10 time each lol the carving one with him putting in that line would be useful.
