We filmed this back in 2018 at Sergio's home in East Nashville. This makes me long for sitting around and chatting with friends. My best buddy, Todd Fox filmed the Sergio footage and it sat around for a while until I figured out how to present it. I do that sometimes. What do you think? Do you think BW Stephenson may have once owned this guitar?

Hello Otis! Just came across this video. In 1986 our band was in development with Willie Nelson and found ourselves performing at Farm Aid II in Manor, TX. Poodie Locke was Willie's road manager and introduced us to BW backstage. We had the good fortune of opening and performing as his backup band over the course of the next year and a half until his passing. Never in that time did I ever see said guitar, never was he referred to as 'Bucky' - it was always BW or Buck. He was a very quiet and introverted guy and didn't go for flashy stuff like inlay on his guitar, especially one with a name like 'Bucky' on the headstock. It's inconceivable. Thanks for your videos!

Great story! I have no idea if this was BW's guitar, but hope it is. Thanks for referencing my book, "Kalamazoo Gals"! To the person who posted about the song, "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," that song, of course, inspired my title. When the Gals walked into the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo in 1942, the number 1 song in the US was, you guessed it, "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo." Again, thanks for sharing this great story and thanks for referring to my book. John Thomas

Otis man, I hope you don't mind me dropping another story man, You have really brought back my memories as I listen to your great stories....in 2010 I got tired of winterizing my bus and settled in Dekalb county,Tn along the smith creek and the dry creek area.Arron Tippon stomping grounds.( he still had his white eagle) everyone told me "Arron still tours a lot" I figured out quick that means he leaves on friday and gets home sunday...--TOURING???? whatever...lmao....I almost never went to Nashville as it just was never my thing..I am just a guitar man, not a sales-man, and since I used Hired guns, I never played without a prearranged fee involved...I din't play a lot of Nashville gigs, for this reason.(plus I was an unknown- lol) - However, as soon as I took my boots off in Tn, a nashville drummer found me and started hanging with me. ( My schedule on my website caught his attention..lol them resourcefull nashville cats hey?..).
So we had a gig in carthage at some sports pub,and our usual bass men were not available.Brian (drummer) knew a lot of cats so I said, "grab us a bass man, I only have 2 questions for him, who has he played with, who is he playing with now..?" I had 125 bucks for a bassman so good pay for nashville lol...
Brain calls me back and says, "I got us one,but he ain't working rite now and only played with one band for the last 18 years...." I am old school so i'm thinking "great, not the guy i want.....rite.." I say "What band was that?"
and Brian replies "B.B. King" ...lmao........Yes sir, I hired Michael Doster for 125 bucks and played my ass off that nite, one of my personal favorite gigs ever...empty house even....lol...
We finished the gig and Michael says " you got a lot of spunk Son, I really like your style and thanks for having me..."
Michael Doster is one of the most class acts I have ever played with...great guy, and I sure hope he is still well...
and what a musician he is. The highest compliment us guitar slingers ever get is from our peers and idols....big deal for me....
btw- my eagle got crashed bad in cincinatti on 1-75 ...the only gig I never made...got hurt, smashed the bus, and the semi driver got to drive away as we walked down the street with our favorite guitars in hand....strange day.for me.
I refused medical attention because I would not be seperated from my 335. dig

I saw BW back in 73 or 74 at Hara Arena, in Dayton Ohio. He was the opening act for The Guess Who . There was a big snowstorm and the weather was so bad very few came to the show. The crowd was so sparce that folks sat in circles on the floor and passed bottles of wine and funny cigarettes. You could walk right up to the stage and rest your elbows at BW's feet or right below Burton Cummings' grand Piano. It was one of the greatest shows I had ever seen.
Try as I may thouh, I cannot remember BW's guitar 🎸 . This video brought back a memorable experience. Thanks for the videos Otis.

I dont know anything about guitars; but I did have the opportunity as a kid to see B.W. live. Probably around '77 in Ft. Worth at a little pub just off of the TCU campus called "the Hop". Apparently it had previously been a pizza joint called the house of pizza, "the Hop".
I didn't have a clue who was going to be playing, and had to sneak in being underage; but it is a night I'll never forget. B.W. was truly amazing, just him no one else, it was something else.

I don't know Sergio but wonder if we snuck into the same bars at the same time to hear music. By my senior year in HS the drinking age changed to 18 so we could sometimes hear live music on crummy HS ID/library cards. I grew up in Dallas and as a freshman went to a community college and "worked" on the speakers bureau booking political speakers and bands. We booked BW in perhaps 75 and I met him briefly and saw the show. Don't recall the guitar. Still have his first 3 RCA LPs. Recently lent them to a singer songwriter buddy from Vermont-he'd never heard the name and just loved it. Great episode Otis

Very cool post beautiful guitar.. Nothing like Kalamazoo gold.. Have spent a lot of time there over the years.. The old factory is an awesome visit.. One trip i took my family to a bed and breakfast in town brought my 12string Alvarez late 70's model and the owner of the bed and breakfast and i stayed up one night trading the guitar playing songs.. he had been in a really popular "folk" band that called The Minorities ( i think that was the name ) they had the gig to play at the opening of many national parks.. He said once by chance he was playing in a park and the Colonel Sanders himself came up to him and requested Tennessee Waltz i believe, i will have to look at my journals.. Afterwards the Colonel whom had a date with him gave the guy a 100.oo bill.. He said he grew up in Indiana and was influenced into music when he and a kid friend went to the weekend cinema and all of the sudden this guy shows up on a motorcycle with guitar on back, hops off and starts playing on the corner.. it was Burl Ives!! I have spent a ton of time at the epic Circle Pines campground just north of Kalamazoo where Pete Seeger hung out with Big Bill Broonzy who worked there before he passed way to early.. The last amazing film of Big Bill is from there where Pete Seeger shot it.. Still photos in the building from Pete of Bill.. I have spent a lot of time playing there and many deep experiences.. was originally purchased by the unions.. worth a trip if you can make it sometime.. My old friend bass player Charlie Campbell i have mentioned in the past his dad has a beautiful era gibson very similar with the og finish pictured in the book.. His dad cut a bluegrass 45 or two in Kentucky back in the day.. Plays senior homes now over 20 years

Just saw this video and can add a few comments. I first knew BW when he was 'Chuck' in the mid/late 60's. My partner (musical) and I were playing some of the same places as BW and we also lived near each other in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas - caught up periodically at the local Piggly Wiggly. I saw him perform many times, especially at the Rubayait on Maple Avenue (one of our favourite venues to play). We never played at the same time. I was and am an avid Martin fan and only remember him playing a Martin - and certainly no guitar with those markings as in the video. And I'm also sure he would have cringed if anyone ever referred to him as 'Bucky'! Great mystery, though. Somebody, somewhere knows where that guitar came from.

I think it is very possible it was B. W’s Guitar. B.W. passed long time ago. If it was-My guess it was an Early guitar that he owned and played before he hit the recording scene. If it was a guitar he used during his recording years when he had some notoriety- there would be photos of him with it and music industry people of that time would easily verify it was his.--after all-its unique with the Inlayed initials on top and name on headstock. Your best source would be the Luthier’ guy from Boise if he’s still around- there would of been repair/paperwork -but it’s long gone by now! On the other hand that old Gibson Southern Jumbo’ or Country Western’ model from the mid 40’s-50’s could been owned by an old Idaho rancher/Farmer named Buck Wilson’ or Bill/Buck Wright’ or Bob/Buck Watkins. For the heck of it--I’d do a person’s deceased search in the Treasure Valley region of Idaho for a Person named Buck’ with middle initial W. It’s a cool story for sure! Old story’s surrounding Old Guitars are the best🇺🇸

I knew BW in High School, and I know who could ID the J50 that was stolen. I'll see if I can forward this video, and if he chooses to contact you, he will. I'm thinking, no, it's not BW's. He most certainly would not have put the "BW" decals on it and would not have "Bucky" on the headstock.

@@otisgibbs I will say that the guitar in the pictures has a different fretboard, but back in the day it was common practice to replace the entire fretboard, rather than the frets alone, when the frets were worn out, so the fingerboard that is on the mystery guitar may not be original. Also, it is worth mentioning that the guitar in the pictures has an upside down bridge, which may have been replaced at some point later. It may or may not be the same guitar. Either way, very intriguing
