But I could never admit out loud that I liked his character because people would just ask "what the hell is wrong with you?"
You couldn't have said it better. I don't think Scrappy is as hated as many of us think. It's just that people don't want to admit it in fear to be criticized for it, because he's SUPPOSE to be hated. He is, like you said, just a kid who was a little too fearless, and that was alright. Even if someone found him annoying, you have to admit he did add a fun later to a series that was clearly becoming repetitive.
@@lulystalgianature2968he didn't add any fun layer. It made no sense for the gang to bring along a small child on dangerous mysterys and he was annoying because he was both useless, had terrible lines of dialogue, and was a hinderence to things. There are legit objective writing problems with both the character and him being in the series. Even if everyone started liking him, I'm gonna be a rational voice and say that scrappy doo DOES deserve the hate.
Thank you. I remember the first time I saw the live-action movie. I was surprised (and not in a good way) that they used Scrappy as the villain. To me the flashback only made the gang look cruel and criminally selfish. Abandoning a puppy in the middle of the road even if he was annoying was just evil. And that's the most frustrating thing for me with everyone that loves to bash Scrappy-Doo, he is a puppy, criticize how he is used, not the puppy itself.
Fun Fact: the reason Scrappy wasn’t in the 13th ghosts was because WB demanded that they don’t bring him or Flim Flam back (somehow FimFlam returned) WB is also the reason the movie lacked any supernatural elements and why Return To Zombie Island sucked
There really is an inexcusably low amount of justice in the world for Scrappy-Doo, and a video like this provides that justice. Like, this character made his debut 41 years ago, so i'm sure by now the jabs at him have gone completely stale. Most are needlessly mean-spirited, honestly. I'm convinced James Gunn only wrote the 2002 live-action film for Scrappy-Doo hater service, and everything else in it was a means to that end. I mean, that sure would explain it's general low quality. Compared to a number of characters throughout the history of fiction that fit the trope named after him, Scrappy-Doo is a harmless little guy.
"you could easily make a movie that ignores his past appearances and references" yeah, they did. Kinda. its called Scooby-Doo and the 13th Ghost. They recap the story and leave scrappy out. Velma seemingly has no idea who he is when Flim Flam asks about him. that PISSED me off. EDIT: I should've finished the video lmaooo
This is the reason why the sequel movie (Scooby-Doo and the 13th Ghost) to The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo Series is Objectively Bad, i remember very well how bad of a Character Flim Flam was & his also FAR more annoying than Scrappy-Doo, but his in the movie and Scrappy-Doo pretty much doesn't exist.
As funny as it could be at first to shit on a character that was poorly received, eventually it just gets to a point where its like "Either fix the damn character or shut up about him". Maybe it was funny in the live action movie when he was the secret villain but now with basically killing him off in Mystery Incorporated with no one willing to talk about him and I guess he is just a villain now whenever he shows up, its starting to become kind of fucked up. Scrappy is a puppy and related to Scooby Doo, you mean to tell me Scooby or Shaggy could not give a rats ass about him or care when he turns bad? That kind of makes them seem like awful people. This makes me think of Linkara's March of The Titans retrospective where he was going over the Teen Titans history in comics and he mentioned a character called Danny Chase. He likes him but apparently other fans didn't so he was not liked, he was killed off and at least from the reviews, it seems like the Titans could not give a damn about this young kid who died on their team. Apparently they have a statue to remember Terra by, someone who betrayed them but completely forgot about the kid who as I recall, heroically sacrificed himself? I get he wasn't liked but just like Scrappy, having the characters not acknowledge or care about him just makes them look awful. Fix the characters or stop making the same jokes about them, and at least acknowledged they existed without making a dark joke about them being dead or that no one cared about them.
There's nothing wrong with Scrappy-Doo He's a friendly foil to Scooby Where Scooby is big and cowardly, Scrappy is small and... well... scrappy. Brave. Naive. If anything, the show should never have exposed Scooby to Scrappy. It reminds me of Buttons and Mindy from Animaniacs. Mindy was a little girl who's too naive to ever be frightened, and here irresponsible mother leaves her in the care of Buttons (the family dog). The curious and brave Mindy would always get into trouble and Buttons would have to take heroic measures to rescue Mindy, often getting blindsided by new obstacles all around New York City... and then, Mindy, through nothing but luck makes it home safe and sound, and Buttons makes it back, battered, bruised and beaten, and the mother comes out to find a small thing out of place and yell at Buttons. Even as an adult I could watch that all day, and Scrappy and Scooby had a similar dynamic. Scooby was tasked with protecting a reckless runt which means he had to face his own cowardice head-on every episode. Not only is there nothing wrong with Scrappy-Doo... Scrappy Doo was a PERFECT compliment to Scooby. The kids loved Scrappy, and the adults identified with Scooby having to protect Scrappy all the time, no matter how scary. It took what was a children's show (all animated shows back then were made mostly for kids) and made a dynamic within the show that parents could enjoy. I'm glad someone finally said it. Scrappy is only hated because the internet decided it's cool to hate on him.
Yeah, I'm sick of the Scrappy hate too. It's one thing when it's just obnoxious fans making lame jokes thinking that they're funny, but when the writers themselves try to get in on the jokes it just comes across as taking the easy way out!
The reason why Scrappy gets so much hate is because Hannah Barbera got greedy by making him the new face of the franchise instead of keeping him as a supporting character.
For me, Scrappy Doo was my favorite out of all the cast of Scooby Doo, his was a breath of fresh air to see a character that wasn't afraid of anything and his was ready to fight but his relationship with his Uncle was a total waste.
@@fro-zone2k Yeah, i agree with you completely on that. Hannah Barbera did a really terrible job of what to do with Scrappy Doo after the danger of Scooby Doo getting cancelled in the 70's was 100% gone, they should have made a solo TV Series of him going on his own adventures and the Scooby Doo gang make a appearance in his show from time to time (for continuity reasons) and let the original gang doing their own thing in their own series. The solution was simple and easy, but as in many other film studios they took the complicated and stupid solution.

@@mrb4783 It's less about being a punching bag, but more about how 'iconic' he is, being part of the original roster and the first three golden age MK games (except the second one). And he's not conceived in the 3D era which was the 'punching bag' era. Seriously, being a punching bag/jobber in the game is a better fate than only existing to be brutalized and shoved in the face with messages like "HA HA THE FANS DOESN'T LIKE THIS GUY"
@@mrb4783 Then that seems to be a problem on how the story was structured (how to structure a story where every characters get treated with respect, no punching bags or jokes). Which I'm sure 4th Snake could or already had covered.
I always loved Scrappy as a kid, and still do today. I still don't understand why people hate him. During the time it was just him, Shaggy, and Scooby I thought that the others were just doing their thing, which is not a bad thing in my opinion. It's important to know that they are friends, but even the best of friends aren't spending their every waking second together. Maybe in pairs, yes like Fred and Daphne if they're dating or Shaggy and Scooby because they're genuinely closer than brothers. But a whole group? No freaking way. The worst thing I ever saw of Scrappy that made me genuinely hate him was when they made him the villain in the live action movie, and it still wasn't the character I hated, it was the writers for writing him as the villain...like...why? My heart felt so broken as a kid when I saw that reveal and I couldn't be happier to not see Scrappy if that's what they were going to do with him. People are stupid.
I never watched a lot of Scooby-Doo but I did see the movie "Scooby-Doo and the Boo Brothers", and I thought Scrappy was perfectly okay in that movie as a character. I heard more about the hate for him than actually ever finding any hate for him myself and Scrappy being the main antagonist of the first live-action movie really threw me at first. It's interesting how Scrappy has become his own phenomenon, a singularity of hated matter that cannot be changed by the willing or not, nor will change under its own power, and that's rather disappointing given what this video outlines.
Scrappy did save the show and brought a new layer of action. True, he could be obnoxious and a bit annoying, but never to the point of deserving hatred. Whether people like it or not, Scrappy was and is a very important character that saved the show from monotony, and I hate what has become of the character nowadays, to the point they made the gang, even his uncle, hate him.
@@dakotastein9499 In the worst Scooby Doo adaptation ever created, it was only natural that the franchise's most hated character immediately became the best there. Sounds ironic, but the math checks out.
new layer of action - is this when most of the characters were removed, and the show itself turned from a detective story into silly children's sketches?
Wherever you are Scrappy Doo, myself and the entire Scooby Doo fanbase wants to sincerely apologize to you. After the gargantuan truckload of elephant feces that is Velma, you are no longer the black sheep of the Scooby Doo franchise!
I never thought Scrappy was that bad. And hell if people actually looked at all of the shows, they can't possibly saw that Scrappy was worse than Scooby Dum.
I 100% agree with you. I like Scrappy. If it wasn't for his introduction I might've never gotten to watch Scooby-Doo. One day, I know someone will right this wrong and give Scrappy a revival and a true story that he really deserves.
Scrappy was much better in the later episodes when he was useful to the group. I just see it as the earlier episodes with Scrappy are more because he was a younger puppy, and as he got older, theres definitely a marked difference in the character.
I had the most bizarre timing getting into Scooby-Doo as a kid. I heard how hated Scrappy was, even though I didn't understand why, exactly. I still don't. Anyway, seeing him do his thing growing up watching re-runs on Boomerang was always amusing, though it suffers from what all of Scooby-Doo suffers from; Repetition. Sameyness. I was 8 years old when the live-action movie came out, so I was SO confused to see the writers actively shit on Scrappy like everyone in real-life did. It was so baffling to me that I was questioning if I even enjoyed the previous episodes featuring the character. A fella shouldn't have to do that. If a character's fun in the moment, and they were made for that very reason, it's exceptionally strange to then be told by the series itself that no, you didn't experience what you experienced and your enjoyment is invalid. It's so bizarre that it's frankly similar to propaganda, wherein a fella is told to believe something that isn't necessarily true for so long, so vocally, and so forcefully that it attempts to bend reality to make it so through attrition. Don't get me wrong, I've never been crazy about Scrappy, but I've always seen the potential in the character. His issue is one of form being prioritized over funtion. He's too obviously simply added to already-functional scenes most of the time rather than being organically woven into the narrative. If anyone reading this is familiar with One Piece, I think Scrappy should be ideally similar to the Tontattas where Scooby himself is a lier and boaster like Usopp. Pairing a naive character (or characters) with a skilled bullshit artist makes for instant comedy when handled well. You can even tell dramatic stories within that framework.
@@scottchaison1001 It's not exaggeration, it's elaboration. Thr negatively is exaggerated to the point where it's all people remember of the character, is all. It's more an issue of writers not having confidence in their creative choices and immediately folding under pressure. It's a shame to see happen, hence the video.
Missed this one, but what a powerful statement! What you describe there (telling us our experience and enjoyment are invalid) is the bona fide definition of "gaslighting"! That's what all these haters are doing with their rewriting of history!
Nice video I always like Scrappy-Doo underated by most new fans who only know him from more newer stuff. Also ask anyone from the series about him. They tell you Scrappy saved Scooby-Doo. Now to me Scrappy in the first few seasons after he showed up he was great. He played well off Scooby, and Shaggy because the two were always a team. His bravery to their cowardness worked great. His love for his uncle was also a good add on, he never though that his uncle Scooby could ever get scared even when he saw it. Scrappy just say something like uncle Scooby is just getting the a better spot or something like that. That made him to me better. Like you said he never saw Scooby as scared as he was like any kid his age would be when meeting their heroes not seeing the faults they have. Scooby-Doo is his hero so he can never be scared in his mind. The reson I think most new fans hate him is because of Cartoon Network they ruined him. They did a smear campaign on him for years, making him the most unliked characters when they did cartoon meet ups for commercials. Having other cartoon characters talk down to him, and the like. Plus the live-action movie made him crazy, a bad-guy gave have short-man or short-dog syndrome because he was full grown but still looked like a puppy. That whole movie was just a dumping in Scrappy-Doo. And to be honest if I was treated like Scrappy was after saving the whole Scooby Doo franchise I turn bad too.
I think in order to make him work is make sure get all the characters like Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby and Scrappy himself and balanced each half so that way it works and also slightly toning his personally down and treat Scooby more realistically and lastly make the show like Where are You? (The Original One). Where it needs 3 or 4 season, 16 episode long episodes and a 90 minute move to cap of the series of 48-64 episodes and a movie.
You know what a good jab comeback would be if Scrappy returns in a good way, a nod where some corporate executives are so ass to change something they created to make it good.

Scrappy deserves to be brought back. He can be adjusted into a more likable character if we change a few parts of him. Also the era of which it was only him, Scooby, Shaggy, and Daphne was one of best eras of Scooby-Doo ever!
I feel like if they don´t want to do anything more with Scrappy... at least he should finally get a break. I mean he has not been on screen since 1985 (not counting the Scooby-Doo movie) and this is still something we are upset about? I mean... really? 37 years and we still can´t give this character a break? I would honestly though love to see Scrappy get his redemption. I believe that there are some people that like Scrappy or at least don´t mind him. We can´t live in the world where everybody hates this character. Did the people behind Scrappy handled him poorly? Yes. Could things have gone a different direction to make it better? Most likely. But even with all the bad about him, I always liked how he looked up to his uncle. And I don´t believe Scooby would abandon him on the sidewalk like in the movie or something like that. There was a genuine love there. And at this point, I just honestly only feel sorry for Scrappy.

I do wonder what the reaction would be if Scrappy is ever brought back in a more positive light would it hate no matter what? Maybe that’s what the franchise afraid of. I’m surprised no one really talks about Scooby Dum a character that I don’t think was ever used or mentioned again who I think was actually a mistake.
My favourite scooby doo episodes had scrappy in them. I loved scooby doo and scrappy doo the new scooby doo mysteries and the 13 ghosts of scooby doo. I love these. I wish scrappy was a little better but those were my favourite series.
The big question though is will they ever stop hating on Scrappy?" Because from the looks of it, it seems unlikely. They never get tired of bashing him every chance there is. Just as they never get tired of putting out one Scooby Doo direct to video movie every single year. I am ALL for a reiteration of an older series. But the same thing can only be done so many times until it gets stale.
Scrappy to me was a character I never understood the hate for (except the live action movie) as when I was a kid I found he to a ok character and when I was older he was still just ok but has never been given the chance to shine properly and WB seem to scared to do so
Honestly I feel like if they do bring Scrappy back they should play into the hate, and have Scrappy annoy basically everyone by trying to always hog the spotlight, and do everything important in order to cope with some abandonment issues, and the unrealistically high standards he puts on Scooby, and himself. Then he’ll go on an arc where he realizes he doesn’t to be the hero all the time. That could “Rescue him from the scrappy heap” as tv tropes calls it.
3:10 Tom Rugger did change him up. It was called The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show/The New Scooby Doo Mysteries Also in those series, She became the Fred/Velma of the group and tag-teamed with Scrappy
Scrappy being the villain in the 2002 movie just felt so out of character for him, there's no set of events you could detail that would make me ever believe he'd betray his uncle Scooby. I think there's plenty of ways to make Scrappy work, the 3 made-for-TV movies prove that.
Yes Scrappy Doo should comeback to Reform himself so he can become a better Character and consider Flim Flam and Scrappy Doo seemed well connected so Flim Flam could help Reform Scrappy so Scrappy and Flim Flam would become better characters together And again Scooby Soo your responsibility as an Uncle was Bas leaving your nephew on the Desert like that UNCOOL
I never hated Scrappy but I didn't like it when they decided to cut out Fred, Daphne and Velma. However that wasn't his fault so much as the writers and producers wanting to save money on voice actors. Besides, I think we can all agree Scrappy is much more likable then HBOs Velma.
Scrappy was never the problem. It was the writers and them that were. They got way too greedy and way too ahead of themselves and thus they messed up. But yeah it's been way over 30 years already give Scrappy Doo another chance. Were it not for him the franchise would have been totally scrapped years ago and would ot be what it is today.
An unexpected but welcome surprise, although I do agree that if a character is hated or found boring then future writers should try and make them better
While I agree despite not liking Scrappy Doo solely because of the one-note gag, I must inform you that we now expect at least one _A Pup Named Scooby-Doo_ video from you know that you've opened this door.

As a kid, Scrappy Doo was my fave character in that show and all my fave episodes included him haha
Same here.
mine too
every argument you bring up, no matter how ridiculous, i always feel is justified and comes from a source of love and respect for a certain series
It's still frustrating me when they are people who like the that piece of garbage & defending it, when they don't realize or won't see the problem.
Fun Fact: the reason Scrappy wasn’t in the 13th ghosts was because WB demanded that they don’t bring him or Flim Flam back (somehow FimFlam returned) WB is also the reason the movie lacked any supernatural elements and why Return To Zombie Island sucked
Wow! They’ll make a terrible sequel to their most important and best film but won’t reboot Scrappy!
If that's the case some other company needs to purchase the Scooby-Doo license away from WB!
WB needs to grow up!
Why does WB think removal of the supernatural was a good idea?
@@Numbuh900 because tradition, which is also why they're meddling kids
@@scottchaison1001 Fuck no!!!!!!
Scrappy really needs some justice

For real, there's another trope called Rescued From the Scrappy Heap, and I'm tired of waiting for someone to rescue the namesake.
Let's bring Scrappy Doo back! He deserves a lot of love back. I hate how he ended up a villain.
Wonder how it can be done to make him redeemed?
Get better writers since James Gunn was the one who ruined him and turned him into a villain
Add in jellystone as a pi
I think him killing off Velma in the awful Velma series was a pretty good start. People are hailing him as a hero now!
3:26 What? Daphne’s a Hypno-fetishist ? It is in my head canon, now...
Yes it's cannon the she likes being hypnotized so do with that what you will
Who's here after Scrappy redeemed himself by killing Mindy Kaling's Velma?
"you could easily make a movie that ignores his past appearances and references"
yeah, they did. Kinda. its called Scooby-Doo and the 13th Ghost.
Scrappy doo likes to fight and I love him.
@@scottchaison1001 Yes there is. Just like your stupidity
There's nothing wrong with Scrappy-Doo
He's a friendly foil to Scooby
Where Scooby is big and cowardly, Scrappy is small and... well... scrappy. Brave.
I didn't even know Scrappy was hated until I started regularly using the Internet in the late 2000s. I thought he was funny as a kid.
The reason why Scrappy gets so much hate is because Hannah Barbera got greedy by making him the new face of the franchise instead of keeping him as a supporting character.
For me,
Scrappy Doo was my favorite out of all the cast of Scooby Doo, his was a breath of fresh air to see a character that wasn't afraid of anything and his was ready to fight but his relationship with his Uncle was a total waste.

R.I.P Ken Spears
You inspired and entertained all of us
I never watched a lot of Scooby-Doo but I did see the movie "Scooby-Doo and the Boo Brothers", and I thought Scrappy was perfectly okay in that movie as a character.
And ironically now everyone loves him for killing velma
@@dakotastein9499 In the worst Scooby Doo adaptation ever created, it was only natural that the franchise's most hated character immediately became the best there. Sounds ironic, but the math checks out.
new layer of action - is this when most of the characters were removed, and the show itself turned from a detective story into silly children's sketches?
Personally, I liked Scrappy -Doo a lot. I still do. The hate for the pup gets old.

I would pay a LOT of money to see a movie or show with Scrappy in!!
They took more jabs at Scrappy again, in that CW special, "Scooby-Doo Where Are You Now".
Scrappy was much better in the later episodes when he was useful to the group. I just see it as the earlier episodes with Scrappy are more because he was a younger puppy, and as he got older, theres definitely a marked difference in the character.

I can't believe the nice cowardly dog Scooby that we love hates his own nephew
The real Scooby-Doo died in 2001, that is cardboard cutout Scooby-Doo.
That's WB terrible comedy for ya.
I was so pissed when they wrote a 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo movie and completely wrote him out of the story. Like, what the fuck?

It's not exaggeration, it's elaboration.
We can start a protest community to request Warner Brothers to bring Scrappy Doo back.
Finally Someone speak the Truth and Tells the Scooby Doo fans to Grow up. thanks for making This Because I like Scrappy Doo :)

Scrappy deserves to be brought back. He can be adjusted into a more likable character if we change a few parts of him. Also the era of which it was only him, Scooby, Shaggy, and Daphne was one of best eras of Scooby-Doo ever!

Welcome to the WB Multiverse.
I mean don't get me wrong he can be a little annoying. But he doesn't deserve this much hate.
