    "Brake cable" puppets like this are really popular at the Renaissance Festival. They are often called "woodbabies" (as they were originally sculpted out of wood, but now are mostly resin casts) and one of the main 'companies' that makes them is called "The Midsummer Knight's Dream." I don't really like the company though, as they are really secretive about how their puppets work, and don't support the community modding puppets, or people making their own... which, yeah, it's a business... but it's also not in the maker spirit of being open source, and sharing ideas and techniques. i.e. I appreciate you demonstrating how the make a "brake cable" puppet. :)

      I've heard they can be super protective over this, but the fact is, they don't own this idea. puppeteers of all kinds have done stuff like this for a while. There are tons of variations on simple cable drives like this.

      Realize this is an ancient topic BUT- they used to be more open about it. (I own one of their prototypes, purchased in like 1997)- they got copied by another vendor who undercut their pricing SPECIFICALLY in the renn fair market, so I can't really blame them for being protective. As far as I know, they've never claimed it's totally unique, they're just not interested in teaching other people.

      I actually met the maker, who I believe is the maker, the employee said it was him. He is actually a chill guy, but do not post modifying it, well one of their creations.

    Flip the brake cable so the little end with the tiny "nob" is on the other end and the use the rest of the wire in his head. The little nub at the bottom makes it easier to push in and out and side to side for head movement. :) Great tutorial!

  • @sparkyprojects
    @sparkyprojects 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You could have the straps inside the costume, and use strong magnets to fit it onto the outside, maybe a small hole just for the cable
    The other thing is to use speedometer cable, it's better for twisting, might have to modify the outer sheath so you can get the linear movement, but because the cable can be longer, you could feed it along your arm inside the sleeve

      Is it possible to make that Groot in vase mode and then add some structure later to make sure it doesnt get crushed? It should cut down the weight dramatically.

    • @mehmehmeh6130

      AdamAnt because it is in such tiny scale, it would be hard to print it out hollow. You need a really sturdy material and a really well made printer to do such fine job

    There are flexible 3D printing filaments to help with the way the neck works.

    • @CalebKraftmakes

      I have ninjaflex but that stuff is pretty stiff. I'd have to use basically a single strand of it.

    • @monkwerks
      @monkwerks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Caleb Kraft I thought Ninjaflex came in a couple of different tensions. I have a PLA only machine, so I just don't know the properties of a lot of the other materials.

    I wonder if printing the head "hollow" would make enough difference to make the head lighter?

    Hey Make. I have a question. You see, I have been wanting to make a small shoulder puppet dragon, and your video is super useful. But what other things work for a base? Can you make something out of clay and then make that be able to move like your groot and plush puppet can? If not, do you have any suggestions on what I can use to make my own base? Because I do not have a 3D printer.
