This song came on the radio when I was driving to the funeral of an 18 year old named Mark, he was reckless, like myself and of similar age. I couldn’t get it out of my head, that it could’ve been me in that coffin. I have continued to be reckless for the past 42 years, touch wood, with no serious consequences . I believe that Mark is somehow living his life through me. When I hear Avalon it makes me melancholy, but reminds me to live life to the fullest and don’t worry about petty things.
I used to get chills listening to this song. One of the best albums ever. I'm 62 now and still gets chills. Bryan Ferry still is one of the sexiest men alive. Jerry Hall was an idiot.
Lost my youngest bro last year 55, we were in the army together in the eighties both loved Roxy played this at his funeral, god bless you little bro KARL. Love from tony💖.xx(Avalon).
Can I go back there. I was there in the 80's. It was such a great time. Such class, beauty and high aspirations for the future and that shining city on the hill...sadly today, not so much.
Road tripped from Newport to Mexico in 83 with a buddy and our GFs, this was the only cassette in the car, the radio didn't work but the tape deck did. Listened to this entire album non stop, repeatedly, all the way there. Should have been sick of it. Not. While they all slept on the trip back I listened to it again, and again as I drove, and Avalon became not only in my top 5 songs ever but thee defining soundtrack to my memory of that trip. It's a place I think back to often.
Oh how lovely. Congratulations, new Mama! Welcome to the world little angel warrior. We are so glad to have you with us. Blessings for a life well lived and a heart well loved. 💞
I was brainwashed into Roxy and Bowie when I was able to listen to music by my dad. Such memories when I was young when my dad use to sit me down and play his vinyls every Saturday afternoon. I'm 42 now and how the music has shaped who I am today. Thank you Ferry, Bowie, Eno, Lou, Iggy and the rest. You help form a bond with my dad.
My younger brother, whom I clash with horribly on politics ( he hates Trump) told his wife that he "needed his older brother." He told me that it was me who shaped his taste in music. Bowie; Roxy Music; Peter Gabriel; Elvis Costello; Iggy Pop and assorted 80's new wave. I was massively flattered. Sadly, I let politics get in the way of our relationship. Gotta' put that away and save the relationship. People matter. Politics come and go.....

Bryan Ferry for me was the James Bond of music, he always had the best clothes and had all the beautiful women on his arm and just oozed charisma and sophistication. Roxy Music were the personaification of coolness and made some of the best music during the 70s and early 80s
That rare moment in musical time when all of the planets align for a perfectly constructed and performed song that captures the era, nails the vocals and takes the listener to a place few have visited but wished existed in their world. Just sublime.
I used to stare at the Avalon album cover for hours. With this track playing on the record player, the cover photo pulls you in as you'll swear you're right there floating over the misty covered waters. Don't know why but it always spoke to me. And still does.
I was 30 years old at that time. We still had good music, and freedom. Free to travel, free to smoke, free to have fun. I thought that kind of life would last forever.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. Saw the Avalon tour in 1983 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto. I have seen many concerts in my life, but that show was simply just the best. I remember Bryan singing this song that night like it was yesterday. The back up singers in blue and green shimmering dresses sparkling in the lights. Magical, beyond words....
Those of us, born 1960, we really were the ones that enjoyed this. Mid-20s in LA. LA was a great place for music in the 80s and we were in our prime. Roxy Music was great. along with a lot of others we could see on sunset
Probably the *best* year for music, in *so* many genres - it was like a musical evolutionary explosion which even outdid the '60s and will never be beaten. (But never say never...😼)
The song of a semi-paranoid man in love at first sight with an effortlessly beautiful woman. The zoom in close ups of the band adding to his worry that she might be too good to be true, and we as the listeners will never know if she was. This song is an 80s gem classic 👍
As Brits it would at least have been legal... Though Sophie Ward is 17 here and Bryan is 38! Sexting between them (if it had been possible in 1982) would have got Bryan in jail, though... It's a mad world. 🙀

Worked at a posting in an overseas embassy. I (and other staff) were invited to a new years eve event hosted by the American Consulate in the local opera house. Just after the new years countdown, this came on and I danced with and kissed a beautiful Asian woman who disappeared into the night and I never saw her again. I have always felt that in that few minutes, I lived this video. How cool is that!
That's the feeling that is revived in me whenever I hear this song. A kiss, a look, a comment. Those days were so filled with mystery and the promise of things to come that I had little experience with. God they were wonderful.

I've been a songwriter for over 20 years and Roxy Music was one of the groups that kept burrowing into my brain during sessions. You won't hear anything like this today and it's sad. The haunting melody of this song has stuck with me since the first time I heard it. I wish we were celebrating this today and modern musicians (at least the ones who get on the air) could go back and just do what works.
What's really sad is your inability to accept change. Great music is made every day and if you don't like it then the problem is you. If you can't look at the column on the right and find great music then why are you here? As the Doobie Brothers sang, "Listen to the music.
From what Bryan said, they were finishing recording in New York with Rhett Davies, and Ferry heard a girl singing in the corridor. The girl was Yannick Etienne from Haiti, and he was so impressed he asked her to sing the final part without the band knowing about it. Turned out pretty good I think.

Back in the early 1990's my parents gave me a walkman for my birthday. I woke up that morning and opened the present before anyone else was up. There was a tape in the Walkman: Roxy Music's greatest hits. I grew up listening to them. I can still remember the positive feeling this song gave me, listening to it as a little kid. I love this band and always will.
It's basically 80s synthpop, being the sub-genre of New Romantics.
The most romantic, prolific musician and lyrisist ever...❤and singer.
Here's to all of us who are homesick for a place that no longer exists.
I hear you Brother…
So totally agree. Am homesick too. It's a desolate place to be and painfully acknowledge that it will never return as the place we knew.
If it ever truly did to begin with…
As long as you remember, it will always be there.
So well put. Those of us of this age are marooned, with absolutely no way to find our way home.
I used to get chills listening to this song. One of the best albums ever. I'm 62 now and still gets chills. Bryan Ferry still is one of the sexiest men alive. Jerry Hall was an idiot.
im also 62, we had the best music EVER.
Never liked this song but I’ll admit Bryan Ferry is one incredibly handsome man.
She prefers Rupert Murdoch these days...Eww!
Yes, she was an idiot! What a wonderfully handsome man!
I'm 63. Roxy and Ferry made some superb songs and top videos.
Lost my youngest bro last year 55, we were in the army together in the eighties both loved Roxy played this at his funeral, god bless you little bro KARL. Love from tony💖.xx(Avalon).
sorry for your loss Tony, nice choice of music all the best
aww so sad
RIP
Oh man! So sorry to hear of your loss Tony. But what a beautiful, dreamy piece of music to choose!
Tony Higgs sorry for your loss, hope you're doing well ❣️
Can I go back there.
I just had my daughter a few hours ago, this is the first song we listened to together. It’s always been my favorite.
Oh how lovely. Congratulations, new Mama! Welcome to the world little angel warrior. We are so glad to have you with us. Blessings for a life well lived and a heart well loved. 💞
💯💯💯
aww, how sweet!! me and my mum used to listen to this when I was a child..she is unwell now and this brings back so many good memories of mum.
Oh wow!!!!! Congrats!!!! This is one of the best songs ever!!!!
How lovely! Many congrats! You should call her Tara after the last track on the album!! Just an idea of course , again many congrats.
A 40 year old song that sounds so damn good. It's unique and fresh.
A LOT FROM SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES.
THERES A LOT OF LESSOR KNOWN GROUPS AS WELL.
The way all the parts go together. It's hypnotic, a great piece of music
Yes is the best time for muziek
The muziek kept me alive
It sounds better than it looks on video she is so rigid dancing and that poor Falcon is blindfolded animal cruelty
This album is so beautiful. Timeless. I'm 59 and still love it.
R.I.P. Yanick Etienne. This album is magnificent, with every tune a masterpiece.
Damn, the female singer in this song died?? Sorry to hear that!
RIP 🙏
Her vocals on the outro are the reason I fell in love with this song. I can't think of any other vocal performace so beautiful and moving.
You seem like a good person. Wish you and everyone who reads this health and happiness and peace of mind!
Wow. I could have written this. Thankful for the great, great memories.
@@aaronbeauchamp3312 It is never worth it . They (politicians) always ended up drinking coffee with each other and making alliances. Call your brother and tell him the history of you two is way beyond of whatever politicians are on the run,.YOU LOVE EACH OTHER and do not allow politics break it apart! Call him!
@@danilo3049 I visited him and my family in the Midwest for two weeks in June. Had a good time and enjoyed his company. :)
This song has one of the most tasteful guitar tracks ever recorded.
The whole song is perfection.
Brian Ferry the coolest man in music always sharply dressed with a voice like honey
And the bow tie
This is priceless I'm 52yrs I love this song from when I was 10yrs old
A day has never gone by without me listening to this track since 2012 (through some video game). Don't blame me, I am just 24yrs old 🙈
I actually listen to the whole album, but this track is my favourite. And there's also Slave to Love, which I found out about while watching Kingsman The Secret Service.
I'm 62 , we had the best music EVER.
The "Real" James Bond of Music - so classy , so timeless, so wonderful
А я добавила бы к Брайану ещё Роберта Палмера. Мне кажется,он тоже "Джеймс Бонд рока"😉

One of the most beautiful songs ever.

Of course .
Thank you from France.
Bryan Ferry is an all time class act. His voice and music he plays are simply fantastic
Class meets decadence, laziness meets brilliance. The sax and the the female backing vocal are just mesmerizing. One of the ultimate 3 am last glass of whisky songs I know.
Perfect. 3am last glass of whiskey song.
I've been searching for that phrase to describe the feeling of this song, especially the outro. Thanks, I'm stealing that!

This song embodies why the 80s are the greatest era in music
Loved this song for years. So elegant
So so sophisticated and cool. This is an endless song that never gets old.

Cierro los ojos❤
Escuchando ❤
Y me vuelvo a los 80 y yo con 17 años ❤😢
Honestly, I prefer listening to old songs. The songs of the 70s 80s 90s are very beautiful, compared to today's songs which sound a bit stiff.
So very true!
No need for auto tune. They could sing. 👌
Still seems like yesterday 41 years later.
The 70s and 80s music can't be beaten. Young people now have no idea what they missed.
"now have no idea what they missed."
But SOME of them are beginning to !
That's because we were young people then. I think every generation thinks the same about the music of their youth.
so true my frend
but I'm 20 yers old
i love this song.....
some of them don't find this beautiful, my gf does not ='(
I could watch this over and over, and I bet that Princess Diana would have loved it too!
And Bryan Ferry is a Libra too!!
I saw Bryan Ferry in Toronto over 35 years ago. He opened up with Avalon, 2 notes and I knew what it was! Amazing!
I saw Roxy twice. At 73 still feel like they are hipsters
The female vocals are perfection to wonderful point. Exquisite.
Yannick Etienne
@@courtneykirk478 is that the name of the singer?
@@timothygrayson The actual singer was from Haiti, and her name was Yannick Etienne.
@Courtney Kirk very beautiful vocal work and thanks for the info.
@@courtneykirk478 I think they heard her singing in an adjoining studio where they were recording (the Bahamas?) and just basically went and asked her if she was free and the rest, as they say, is history
Beautiful music, only people who listen to music like this understand music.
Wow, that's judgemental!
Sensuous and emotionally captivating. No one is making music of this calibre any more.
Bryan Ferry for me was the James Bond of music, he always had the best clothes and had all the beautiful women on his arm and just oozed charisma and sophistication. Roxy Music were the personaification of coolness and made some of the best music during the 70s and early 80s
Mr Ferry and Roxy aremy favorite all time band and your coment is spot on
Great comparison
Totally agree
Scene in 3:20 is epic. I want to touch myself
Yes, but more the Roger Moore Bond, not the Sean Connery or Daniel Craig's type.
That rare moment in musical time when all of the planets align for a perfectly constructed and performed song that captures the era, nails the vocals and takes the listener to a place few have visited but wished existed in their world. Just sublime.
Bryan Ferry has always been swoon-worthy. So suave. So talented
I used to stare at the Avalon album cover for hours. With this track playing on the record player, the cover photo pulls you in as you'll swear you're right there floating over the misty covered waters. Don't know why but it always spoke to me. And still does.
Awww....that's so sweet....❤
I was 30 years old at that time. We still had good music, and freedom. Free to travel, free to smoke, free to have fun. I thought that kind of life would last forever.
Time is a merciless bastard.
Remember how romantic and dreamlike the 80s were.
Ah yes .. But why is it ..

Avalon is on Newfoundland
Those of us, born 1960, we really were the ones that enjoyed this. Mid-20s in LA. LA was a great place for music in the 80s and we were in our prime. Roxy Music was great. along with a lot of others we could see on sunset
1982. A great year for music. I dont think knew how much we'd appreciate how good this was in 2022.
Probably the *best* year for music, in *so* many genres - it was like a musical evolutionary explosion which even outdid the '60s and will never be beaten. (But never say never...😼)
@@scotmark God I hope you are right
The song of a semi-paranoid man in love at first sight with an effortlessly beautiful woman.

Oh my goodness ... wasn't prepared for this on a snowy night in UK ..... memories 😊 I actually got to dance with Mr Ferry in a little Night Club in Kensington way back in the day ... all v innocent. A real gentleman.
This song and pretty much anything Bryan Ferry sings really holds up over time. Not to mention, he's really smooth.
I think I married that Asian girl! :)

I think sometimes only sometimes the brief encounters are the ones that stay with you the most..
That's the feeling that is revived in me whenever I hear this song. A kiss, a look, a comment. Those days were so filled with mystery and the promise of things to come that I had little experience with. God they were wonderful.
Ever had contact with her since, Bill?
I used Avalon as my wedding waltz in 1985 and still love it.Its the only album I've got where I love every track still together 37 years later Bryan Ferry still going

Its December 2024. I still get emotional listening to this song. Especially towards the end of the song. So many members of my family have passed. 😢😢❤
Good music (with a few exceptions) died in the early 1990's
@@alfie8472 Very true, few good songs did exist in late 90s as well but then good music did indeed die
Great soundtracks an they could play gr8 on the old grey whistle test too
What's really sad is your inability to accept change.

Never heard of Roxy until I was in my late 30s . More Than This , fell in love with them . I have listen to every one of their songs and often . Just super music. Blend of vocal , beat , harmony, dance steps , and visuals , just lovely music !
This song had everything...Jazz, Reggae, New Wave, Pop, etc... Take your pick! That is the genius that was Roxy Music!
It's basically 80s synthpop, being the sub-genre of New Romantics. Also see "(Feels like) Heaven" by Fiction Factory, "Maid of Orleans" by OMD, "Vienna" by Ultravox, "Voyage, voyage" by Desireless, "Ashes to Ashes" by David Bowie, "Forever young" by Alphaville, "The Great Commandment" by Camouflage, and "Fade to grey" by Visage, which are all New Romantics songs.
Gorgeous song. Bryan's voice is at his peak in my opinion.
You're quite right. His voice peaked 40 years ago. Totally shot now.
This generation will never understand the music videos like this, like we did in the 80's. Sad.
Why. This is crasy good music. And i know from my son he loves it too. Cheers Yannick Love
I saw the last Roxy Music concert in the US the other night at the Forum in LA it marked the end of an era. Thank you Bryan for 50 years of incredible music and showmanship.

I love roxy music. Their greatest hits cd is in my car at this moment.❤
Ferry painted canvases with his music. Sublime.
This song reflects all of the good things from the 80s and it was so good. To be savored like a fine wine.
This is magical and the perfect date night song. The Sax solo makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
How can avalon only have 35 million views it is a masterpiece wonderful arrangement and production it's musical art at its finest. Roxy and Bryan ferry are just different class ❤
I was in college in the 80's and worked at a restaurant when not in school and in the summers. The place played 80's music 24/7, and I got hooked on punk, pop, British, and MTV music videos. I don't remember this song, but I heard it on Sirius XM's New Wave station a few months ago. Damn!! What a song! I almost pulled the car over to soak it in. I so wish I could go back to the 80's and do it all over again....sigh
I can and still do listen to all that great music, it still lives! Thankfully Reagan and Thatcher are dead, and Trump and Johnson are just a minor hiccup we know how to deal with😺...
Back then Brian Ferry was the coolest dude in town, and for me he always will be. He made it look effortless, the sign of a true master of his craft. Such a great band and, as others have noted, a timeless album. So fortunate to have been in my late teens/early twenties when Roxy Music were at their peak.
when i was 18 ,..back when this came out, i wasnt too impressed with ferry and his tuxes.. now, at 60 i see the wisdom of his style. there will never be another cool cat like THIS guy

There's also the fact that this guy could ANY woman he wanted---and no doubt he bedded quite a few! Basically the opposite of my love life (or lack thereof). *sigh*
It’s amazing how hearing a song can take you back to when everything felt right with the world !
I'm betting that if you were asked 'back then', the world may not have seemed quite so 'right'...
