Both his parents died when he was young. He’s bringing his emotions about that sad situation to the stage. The fire in the end of the clip shows that it’s time to end the grief about it. His father told him that since humans invented borders, he could create the world, his own world. And so he did!
This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.
One of his most important memories with his parents was that they watched eurovision together. He even said that one day he would be at eurovision. Since his parents died when he was 12 and mother at 13, this is an referenxe to them
If you really listen to the lyrics, it is clearly an ode to his parents who passed away when he was a child and talking about him running away from his pain without success. Europapa means 'Euro daddy' of course, but also: 'fortunately I don't need a visa to be with you' 'I've lost everything except time' 'I'm in Germany but I'm so alone' (in German) 'I'm in Italy but it still hurts' 'I'm running from myself, crying for help all day long. I even give money to people but there is no one to help me' 'Turn on the radio, hear Stromae with Papaoutai ( which means Daddy, where are you? in French) 'My father once told me: it is a world without borders. I miss you every day is what I secretly whisper. See, dad, I listened to you' So basically: wherever he goes, the sadness goes with him. And then that burning house at the end symbolizes the message to oneself of having to let go of that sadness and old memories in order to move on
Ladies and gentleman as a Dutch person there is obviously a lot of nostalgia and lovely references, and when you first watch it you are like.... what the... then you laugh after some time and enjoy, and then the emotional puch at the end with the reference to his dad... Issnt it everything we want, europe, feeling good and a gut punching emotional end! I love it! And can you imagine, during the live performances these guys dancing the old school 'gabber' dancing, that would be a party to never forget right?
damn, i was not yet born when gabber was the thing :) but i do love it for sure born in 1995 first music i heard at friends was happy hardcore (even on tv) my parents like rock song but i just love dance edm dnb and most hardcore styles but have a soft spot for happy hardcore it just put a smile on my face. uptempo frenchcore etc is cool but it goes hard only
Good luck to joost klein and I hope it might go through to the final performance and if he wins the final performance let me know of the song studio so it’s a party disco hit and it’s a iconic dance tempo Ballard party hit in a euro dance anthem so it will be a disco party hit for Euro pop for disco parties from Geoff and good luck and hope it might win the final performance from Geoff England
The story is about his father’s that past away when he was 12 and a year later his mom and it’s about the advice his father gave him and to make him proud and that he misses them
It's not my music but i respect everyone that loses parents as child have mental problems because of it even becoming homeless and can claw it's way back to this.
The brief story of Europapa by Joost Klein: His parents died when he was a kid. His father to cancer at the age of 12, and his mother to a cardiac arrest at the age of 13. So he was orphaned at age 13 and brought up by his brother and sister. Joost has written Europapa as a letter to his father. His father told him the world has no borders. Borders are made up by humans and so you can create your own world, and that’s what Joost is doing every day from that day on. After the death of his parents, he started searching for the meaning of life and relief of his pain by traveling, but never actually found it there. He gave people money (psychologists) to help him, but that did not work. Until he realized that he still had time and options to realize his dreams. After all, the world has no borders right? And so he did. The burning house in the end represents losing but also moving on, in a positive way. Burning your bridges: no longer controlled by pain + sadness, but focused on your dreams. Without borders. Joost always said to his parents that one day he would go to Eurovision and that day is here and now. 12 points to The Netherlands!
The song is actually a bit sad. As others already stated, he lost his parents at a very young age. There are a lot of double meanings / connections to his parents and surely i am missing something but ill try to name some: Like the song is called "euro-papa" because papa is dad in dutch. He is singing that he goes to other places but he feels lonely. He lost everything except time. he is struggeling He is giving people money but nobody is helping him. He went to mental healthcare but they could not help him. He is talking about the song Papaoutai from stromae. Papa outai means "dad is here" and the phrase Où t'es? Papa où t'es? means Where are you? Dad where are you? check out the lyrics of that song too :) He is also mentioning "i wont stop until they say, yes he does that very well" because he is seeking pride from his parents. The ending is pretty clear but i think he is talking to his dad and his younger him and he tells his dad that he listend to him. Also the burning picture and burning house stands for him closing that chapter and he wants to move on and dont want to feel the pain anymore. while he was in therapy they used burning stuff to let go the old
he would have won the ESC...F*ck the EBU sorry but they have to shame for excluding Joost.. It is the best song from the Netherlands since a long time...

Great track! A sense of honor to his parents. Joost is just in seventh grade when his father dies of cancer. Joost was twelve when his father died of cancer. Personally as a Dutchmen I think this is our best song in last 35 years .

It is funny that you say that it’s a happy song, because the genre is called happy hardcore and was big in the Netherlands in the 90’s.
Investgate the lyrics and history behind his story, it is more then meets the eye
