I had a wringer washer when my 3children were young ( I'm 74) . In the summer I would have it outside with double rinse tubs. Then hang the clothes on the clothesline.. wintertime it was put inside my farmhouse kitchen, and I'd do laundry , then hang them on lines in the attic. Wish I still had that wringer washer. I loved it! Janice, you did well, with what you knew what to do. Love all your children. Can't wait to see the new kitchen!
While visiting Mexico… I used this concrete board to wash my family’s clothes. It really makes me thankful that I have a washing machine. Sometimes we just don’t realize how blessed we are.
I can remember as a kid my mom had a wringer washer (I am 70) and I can remember her putting jeans through the wringer. She would fold the jeans with the snaps inside so they could go through.
Well done girls for willingly taking on an arduous task, with smiling faces, and helping your Momma get through all that laundry! When I was young I thought it was fun helping my Grannie wring out the laundry. When she eventually got a washing machine, she would still wash the clothes in the sink, wring them then put them in the washer. It took her a few years to trust the washer to do it all for her! She did always say the old ways were best however hard the chore. Janice, I hope you and your new washer have a very long lasting friendship with no breakdowns or niggles along the way. Forever blessed ❤️🕯️🙏👕👗👚🎽
Mom had an electric wringer/agitator it could rotate to the 2 additional rinse tubs. She would start with whites in washer, and reuse the water until it became "too dirty". The temperature would gradually get cooler which was fine for clothing. Daddy work uniforms were always last because they were dirtier. She used the wringer on them. On rainy and snowy days she would hang them in the basement. She always swore her clothes were never as clean as when she used the wringer.
@samrumohr2691 part of that was hanging clothes in the sun to dry. And they smelled so great. The only thing I didn't like was towels, because they were stiffer.
For the first 3 years of our marriage I didn’t have a washing machine . I washed them in the tub and also used a wash board and it worked fine. It sure was a workout though. Good luck.
Being from a family of fourteen with no dryer I know this drill, save the time and bring it the laundromat, bring it home wet and hang it up to dry. My sister and I the two oldest would be out in the dead of winter hanging clothes on pully lines and that was pre-disposable diaper days, My mother would hang the socks and under ware on the radiator's in the winter for them to dry, less for my sister and I to hang. No dryer and no dishwasher, Our father use to say we don't need a dishwasher I got five he meant five daughters. Oh the memories lol.
(from Shawn) Thank you for sharing this memory with us. It was certainly an experience getting a taste of what life was like before modern washing machines.
Yes! A Speed Queen! We have had our commercial size Speed Queen for 30 some years now. No fancy buttons...It just does the job without bells and whistles! We still have it. 😁 And still love it. We got our money's worth over and over. No fancy junk on it to break down. A top loader too...the best kind.
I remember when I saw a ringer washer for the first time it’s was 1993. I never had one but my sister’s in law’s had one. It was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen. They showed me how they worked. That is too much work for me. I’m was glad I had a Maytag. Your little ladies are so great to help you, I wish y’all all the luck using y’all’s new washer, I know your glad to have it. Thank you for sharing.
Good for you and your entire family!! Team work and not a lot of complaining. God Bless you all. JOB WELL DONE. CONGRATULATIONS!! LOVR, from Debbie and Dexter-Dog my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua companion living a quiet crafty life in southern California. 🙋🐾🧑🦽💞🙏✝️💕👍🎃😄🇺🇸📫⛸️❄️⛄☃️🎄🌲🐝
I can't blame you for trying other washing methods because I truly despise going to the laundromat. I usually take my rugs and comforters(king size) to the laundromat to save my washing machine. Glad your new machine arrived!
Yeah, I really didn't want to spend hours at the laundromat. When we leave the property, it throws everything off, so I chose to just do it by hand and try to keep the rest of our routines in place. It was temporary, so that was good! :)
This may have been hard on you all, but what a great teaching moment! Those children now know that laundry is no easy chore and they will appreciate a new washer.
Anna is going to be like her mama and big sissy. A beautiful, loving, hard working homemaker AND videographer 🥰 Little Abigail right behind her♥️ I used to help my Grandmother with her wringer washer. Hard work. Soo glad you got your new one!!! Love and prayers!!💞🙏💞
Thanks Jeanne! I'm really noticing lately that Anna is acting more like a young lady and less like a little girl. Time is going way too fast for this Momma! 💕
Not sure what you use for detergent. But I learned if boys men do dirty jobs/chores you may need to use a stronger detergent. My husband in dirt/gravel business. I had to go to regular Tide. Made a world of difference. Cost more. But made clothes look better. I continued to use milder detergent on my clothes. This reminds me of washing at my Grandmother she used a wringer washer for years😊 YES YES!! Agitation is a necessary step. Especially for us country people!!!
Do Anna and Abigail do their own hair or does somebody do it for them? It's always so pretty. I had no idea how much dirt these modern washing machines are leaving behind! I plan to make sure my next washer at least has an agitator in it. Looks like we could get them much cleaner washing by hand but, oh my, the work!
That was quite the laundry nightmare, but fun and educational for kids to see what a chore laundry was in the "olden days." The whole family will now greatly appreciate her royal highness, Speed Queen! 😂
My parent used wringer washer and hung clothes outside. They never bought an other washer we used to go to laundrymat. Your family is so full of energy and dont seems to mind using that energy on work and helping. Bless you Ozark family. Oh ya my sister got her hand caught in the wringer.😊😊😊
Speed Queen washers are fantastic!!! Excellent sturdy choice. We use one at the animal shelter where we have about 8 heavy, very dirty loads a day. It will run for many years and really cleans well. Congratulations!! Agitator washers always take about half the time of impeller machines (like your old one.)
I have an old washer and lately it doesn’t spin all the water out. Some loads are fine and others and soaking wet. One thing I do after hand wringing and letting things dry part way outside is throw a dry towel in with the wet/damp clothes and the dry towel helps to absorb some of that extra water. Also drying smaller loads helps.
Wow, terrible number to fix old washing machine!! That number would make me say no! I love every single one of your videos. Your kids are beautiful and wonderful. It reminds me of my kids a long time ago. You and Shawn are the best parents ever. Thank you dear Janice 🙏🏻
It was so refreshing to see the children helping with the laundry!!! So glad you got your new one Janice!! What would we do without electric washin machines!! lol Now, you can do a little dance while your washing the clothes!! lol. Have a blessed day and I love all of you!! 😊💖💖💪🦆🦆
Where there is a will there is a way! You have proven that. We all need to be ready incase these things happen. Thank you for sharing. The girls were a great help. They got right in there and helped.😇💌💌Praise God you got a new washing Machine!
Oh boy ,i could not be as patient as you Janice ...Good to see the children giving a helping hand ..Back in the old days ,they did it tough ...thanks for sharing ...💞
Lots of dirt = lots of hard work and play! Good memories at grandmas house are thought of when I saw this, wringer and all!! Happy washing👖👕🧦 Love the new machine!!
Love this video, I learned a lot in case I ever have to wash clothes by hand. It's so precious how your babies pitch in and help out. You have an amazing family, you're such a great Mama to learn from 💖. I loved how excited you got getting a new washer, I too, get excited when I get new appliances or kitchen gadgets, anything to make the job at hand easier is always a plus 😊
Yeah, after a week and a half, I was SUPER excited for the new washer! I wonder if that means I'm old and boring now??? 😳 I don't think I used to get this excited over appliances when I was younger... 🤔
My mom had a ringer washer when I was about 4 or 5 and I remember her doing whites first then darks so she didn't have to change the water. as a kid I wanted to help so when she went to answer the phone I tired to put clothes in the wringer and my hand went in with it 😮💨The only problem is you can't just throw the clothes in and walk away and do something else while your clothes are washing.
I am 65 and I remember her using a ringer. She has since told me that she loved it and did not want to get the automatic one! Just started to watch this video but I had 2 ideas.. maybe you should get a second machine....not only in case of a breakage, but you could probably use a second one. Maybe insert a large garbage bag so the rust does not have contact with the clothes
I used a plunger in the bathtub with an old washboard for a few years, long ago, to wash my family's clothes since I couldn't afford a washer. I rinsed them , wrung them out and hung them to dry in the bathroom over the tub. I was renting I wasn't allowed to put up a clothesline outside. Besides, we lived on the 2nd floor and I didn't want to run up and down the stairs and leave my kids alone upstairs (single parent). That was 1976 and in 1979 I had a friend who lived next door to an appliance repairman. He sold me a 1959 Kenmore washer for $5.00 that he fixed . I loved that machine!!! The best washer I ever had. It finally gave out in 1994. So for $5.00 I had the use of a fabulous washing machine for 15 years that was 35 years old. Jeans took 25 minutes to dry in the dryer when i finally was able to buy one. Still miss it.
I'm glad you were able to get a new washing machine so soon after the other machine gave out. Still use the afresh once a week for the purpose it serves, to clean the washing machine. I'm not trying to sound bossy.
a good way to make the ringing out of hand washed laundry is to have two people wring each item out by twisting in opposite directions at the same time
I remember doing clothes in the bathtub. We didn’t have an agitator/plunger so we kids would get in and walk around on the clothes to get them washed. We would pull the plug and stomp the clothes down from the back of the tub to the drain. So not as much wringing. We thought it was fun as children too. 😂
I made the same switch to a Speed Queen a few years ago. We are Wisconsin dairy farmers and get dirty clothes also, I think you will be very satisfied. Washing clothes by hand does really make you appreciate the automation of a washing machine. Nice video, working together is rewarding.
This reminds me of when we were off grid, my husband attatched a petrol motor to an old washing machine spindle, then wringer into rinse trough and through another wringer. We had a double cement trough that the wringers attached to. Tried bath tub but found heavy and back breaking. Trust your machine is fixed or replaced very soon.
We always say if the clothes are out in the rain they got an extra rinse. 😊. Your family brought back a lot of memories with wringer washers and twisting blue jeans. I was a single mom of two boys we did a lot of twisting cloths.
After watching y'all do this hard work I will never take my washer and dryer for granted ever again . God bless you Janice. . ❤️🙏🏻❤️also Anna is really growing up .she is such a hard worker. I am impressed with her ❤️🙏🏻❤️
After using your new machine, try washing it in the bathtub again to see how well your new washer is doing compared to your old one. It would be interesting to see how well washers actually wash clothes better or if hand washing gets them ckeaner???
Back in 1956 I would wash my husbands Air Force uniforms in the bathtub,I'd walk up and down the tub. I also had to inon the uniform. I was 16 years old. God Bless. Jean ps, In the late 1940s I got my hand caught in the electric ringer, now that was a bommer.
I feel all your pain and muscles. We used two buckets a plunger and some rope to do our laundry in the past. You drill holes in the bottom and sides of one bucket, in the plunger, and one hole in the bucket lid.. To wash you put the hole filled bucket inside the normal bucket put your load of clothes and soap in, add your water, the add the plunger putting the lid over the plunger. Then you push the plunger up and down to agitate the clothes. Take the whole bucket out of the normal bucket and let it drain while you empty the normal bucket. Hang the bucket from a tree using the rope and spin it one direction as high as you feel comfortable, the step back and let it spin the water out. Rinse and repeat. My kids loved doing laundry this way. It could be your plan c 😊
I wonder if using hot water caused some of the dyes to come out from the clothes besides them being dirty? It's a pain to have no washer... But, probably kind a fun for this one time and something different. It was a fun video to watch and the girls were SUCH a big help. Love you guys....
Janice, your kids are hard workers. They are outside most of the day. Your boys and Shawn the same. They have to get really dirty. You just don't see it in washer like your bathtub. We all learned with you. Ty for sharing this. We all have your knowledge now for when we need it. Love your precious family.
Looks like y'all handled the task at hand pretty well, despite the rain. Your girls are big helpers! I bet you're glad that you have your new washer now. Many years ago when I was on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in New Zealand I had to use an old Wringer-Washer machine. Sometimes it would tear my clothes when going through the wringer. I started calling it the "Rip-O-Matic." To dry our clothes we hung kite string on the living room ceiling in our flat and then hung them up to dry. We had no Central Heating or Air Conditioning to help speed up the drying process. It was a good lesson for me to learn. I took far to much for granted.
Yeah Dawna, that kind of defeats the purpose of it all if your clothes end up destroyed from the wringer! Sounds like you and I both have had experiences where gratefulness was learned. 💕
I had a similar washing machine except a Whirpool also no agitator. Anyway, it died about 2 years ago. The cost to repair it was going to be $1,000.00! Obviously we didn't repair. We ended up with a much simpler machine with an agitator. I agree with you it cleans clothes much better.
I was without a kitchen for a whole year when we were renovating our home. Did my cooking in an electric skillet and microwave in my master bedroom and did the dishes in the bathroom sink and bathtub. In fact, other than the small bedroom with a double bed that my two little kids (boy and girl) shared and a laundry room that remained intact, our family spent the rest of our indoor time in just our master-bedroom-turned-family-room-and-kitchen during the day! It was a cozy year.
(from Shawn) That must have been an adventure. We lived in our house during a remodel, so we know exactly how crazy it is to live in an ever changing construction zone.
Every day is a new unknown day.. We never know what is coming. All of the family sure had an experience. A BIG memory all will laugh at the telling of the story at future family reunions with all your grandchildren listening.😅😊
I still have a wringer washer and still use it! Everything can go threw the ringer! Yes it is a lot of work but everything is! There is a hand washing unit that looks something like what you have but has a handle to wash with instead of a plunger. Lehman's Own Hand Washer, a must have just in case.
Oh Janice I remember having to do this with the bath, to get our clothes clean when our washing machine broke. I did not like it at all, I was so happy to have my machine fixed. I really hope that I never have to do it again 🤣🤣
My daughter has 3 kids and tried the no agitator washer and hated it; didn't get the clothes clean. She went back to the regular agitator one and it does a much better job.
Gosh, that looks like a lot of work! I'll have to hand it to you Janice, you are a better woman than me! I would have been headed to the laundromat immediately!! It always amazing to me just how hard you work! No woman should have to hand wash 9 people's worth of clothing. This would have been a good teaching moment...everyone gets to wash their own clothes! LOL Think about the women, way back when, that carted their wash to the river bank and beat it on rocks...poor souls!
Lisa, the past week and a half really gave me a different perspective on what women of the past might have struggled with! I do admit that I encouraged everyone to wear their clothing for a couple days if they weren't super-dirty and I also skipped our normal washing of sheets and the tablecloth while we were waiting on the new machine to arrive. It was enough just to keep up with the absolutely necessary things! 😁
My first few years of marriage was living near the Army base in Ft. Hood, TX. My husband was stationed there and we were so poor. I washed clothes in the kitchen sink and hung them outdoors. Blue jeans and towels were the hardest. But it was just us two! I grew up in a family of 11 so I know all about laundry. My mom didn’t allow us to reuse bath towels and we showered or bathed every day. She did several loads every day.
I saw a video once upon a time where "they" used the kids to agitate the clothes in the bathtub! They just matched back and forth. Hysterical to watch.
When doing laundry in the bathtub for both wash and rinse piled the laundry onto a plastic chair placed in the bathtub. Gravity will draw all the water out of the clothes.
I had bought the whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer energy efficient washer, no agitator just like yours mine too took much longer for the wash cycle I absolutely hated it and couldn't wait to get a regular washer with agitator and much quicker wash cycle also! So now I'm happy again doing laundry 😁👍
If you let your kids take their bare feet and walk on the londery it get them clean and it also helps get the water out I have been doing my laundry that way 1970 it is fun for kids
We love our speed queens! We run 2 of them. But never buy a 2018. That year was terrible for them. I also love hand washing on occasion. But with 11 of us here It would be too much daily.
Janice you are always so hard worker. You need to take time everyday for you. It will catch up with you. I know personally. You always have the best attitude no matter what. I am so thinking about that agitator. Your washer looks just great.
My grandma used the wringer washer. She adjusted the tension on the rollers and run clothes through buttons, snaps, zippers and all. I believe front loading washing machines are the most efficient machines. Use less water, easiest on clothes.
Sorry but I don't understand why you couldn't run the jeans thru the wringer. The knobs on top makes it adjustable for the buttons go thru. I'm jealous I love hand washing and using a wringer. God Bless y'all
Great job y'all. Now we know why our great grandparents didn't need a gym to stay in shape. They worked out every day doing household chores. Kudos to all your helpers as well.
Hi from Australia Janice! I'm so glad your "new friend" has arrived for you. I remember back 35 years ago when one of my washing machines went and I had a new baby. Back then it was cloth nappies or nothing...... what a chore those were to wash without a machine! I imagine washing clothes of nine people is probably equivalent.....I had 1 child and a new baby back them. Fortunately by the time my third child came along, we were able to buy disposable nappies. Fun video to watch.
In using your bathtub as a washing machine you mentioned how filthy the clothes were but just letting you know that a lot of that was probably dye from the different colors of clothing making the water looks so😊 happy for you that you got a new machine 🥰
Yep we had one too!
When we married in 69 one of the first machines we had had the mangle on top. Machine was electric mangle manual.
So happy your washer found its way home
So many memories! Hard work for our mamas! 🙏 😅
Iam in my middle 50s but used the wringer washer too. My name is cammy.
You will be so impressed with the Speed Queen.
Love how you don't let setbacks set you back.

Aww, thank you for the sweet comment! 💕

My mom said the same thing about how much cleaner the clothes were I swear our whites were whiter then when they were new😂😂😂😂

Law…laundry mat for me if in that situation. You are a good sport. I’d be…no. 😂
Even neighbors could help out with a load or two?

I have washed clothes in bathtub only once cause it's backbreaking. I've washed them in kitchen sink. Builds character. I admire you greatly

I am in love with my new machine, Shelley!!! I'll definitely do a happy dance! 😁
Just what purpose is a summer kitchen? It just seems like extra work all around. Plus extra utilities.
Where there is a will there is a way! You have proven that. We all need to be ready incase these things happen. Thank you for sharing. The girls were a great help. They got right in there and helped.😇💌💌Praise God you got a new washing Machine!
A SAM'S club mop ringer works great for ringing out all clothes

We always run the legs of the jeans through the wringer and then back them back out so don't put zipper and buttons through the wringer.

I'm glad you were able to get a new washing machine so soon after the other machine gave out. Still use the afresh once a week for the purpose it serves, to clean the washing machine. I'm not trying to sound bossy.
a good way to make the ringing out of hand washed laundry is to have two people wring each item out by twisting in opposite directions at the same time
Janice you & Shaun never allow a problem to let you down. You always find a backup!
Wonderful positive attitude family!
I used to help my grandma wash clothes like that. I thought it was so much fun but I’m sure she was happy to have the help.
People used to wash their clothes by hand all the time. Wowza.
You can wring out the pants, leg first until you get to buttons and back them out
This is exactly what we just got. Love it.
use the wringer on the legs of the jeans, just can't do the top part with the buttons
I am impressed with her ❤️🙏🏻❤️
Yes, I have a whole new perspective and appreciation for my washing machine now! 😁
I probably would put some vinegar, baking soda to sit in there before i use it every time.
I wonder if using hot water caused some of the dyes to come out from the clothes besides them being dirty? It's a pain to have no washer... But, probably kind a fun for this one time and something different. It was a fun video to watch and the girls were SUCH a big help. Love you guys....
I Must Say... THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE VIDEO ON YOUR CHANNEL ❤ THANK YOU❤
Janice, your kids are hard workers. They are outside most of the day. Your boys and Shawn the same. They have to get really dirty. You just don't see it in washer like your bathtub. We all learned with you. Ty for sharing this. We all have your knowledge now for when we need it. Love your precious family.
Suggestion for the jeans. Ring them out by putting the legs through first. Go up as far as you can and stop when you are close to the buttons.
You all work very hard on the farm and lots of dirt is to be expected.. You all work so very hard, and I can imagine bedtime is welcomed
I remember as a kid my great grandmother had one loved planning with it
Janice you are always so hard worker.
When life gives you lemons make lemonade. Ingenuity at its finest. Great job😊
YOU COULD USE YOUR FEAT'S FOR CLEANING CLOTHES & BLANKETS
Am glad you got your washer!! Bless you,my friend!!!
It's great to have teamwork.
I remember our wringer washer. I was glad that, by the time it was my turn to do laundry, we had a washer/dryer pair.
Sorry but I don't understand why you couldn't run the jeans thru the wringer. The knobs on top makes it adjustable for the buttons go thru. I'm jealous I love hand washing and using a wringer. God Bless y'all
The ‘dirty water’ is from the dye on the clothes.
Great job y'all. Now we know why our great grandparents didn't need a gym to stay in shape. They worked out every day doing household chores. Kudos to all your helpers as well.
Absolutely, Sheila! Daily living can be strenuous work when we don't have our modern conveniences! 💕
Would love a pantry tour 😊
I lived in Greece and the first year there I had to wash by hand. Not fun. I was the first in my village to have a washing machine.
I had the exact same washing machine the Maytag it broke as well. We got a speed queen too we love it! It works great!
Awesome, so happy and excited for yalls new washer!!!!😊❤🙏
Ms. Ruby
I learned how grateful I am that I live in an age of technology 😂 I have severe arthritis and I would not be able to wring out the clothes by hand 🙌
You totally deserve a new Speed 👑 Queen Washing machine
My first washing as a young mother, was done in my bathtub💞I thought it was fun too
I have had to do laundry in my bathtub before when washer broke it happens
In using your bathtub as a washing machine you mentioned how filthy the clothes were but just letting you know that a lot of that was probably dye from the different colors of clothing making the water looks so😊 happy for you that you got a new machine 🥰
