Best wishes from Australia and many thanks for this video. There is lot of confusion on the pronunciation of beej mantras. Example: how will we pronounce ऊँ हौं जूं सः mantra? Will it be:
    1. Om Haung Jung Sah

    3. Om Haum Jung Sah

When we produce anuswaram, lips are also involved along with nose. We have to produce it with our lips tightly closed. It is impossible to produce anuswaram with lips open.

Hello, very nice, and I love the tattvam videos! But, but I didnt get it :(.
From what I understood, this is actually an external sandhi rule (between words), where the first word ends with म्, but it is sometimes transformed into ं when the word is followed by a word that begins with a consonant.
When we say म् the pronunciation is clear as "mm", but the anusvara, ं is ambiguous and determined by the following word's initial sound.
    So, for example:
English: I see a beautiful pot using spectacles.
    Sanskrit: अहम् उपनेत्रेण सुंदरं कुम्भं पश्यामि
IAST: aham upanetreṇa sundaraṁ kumbhaṁ paśyāmi
We see external म्->* pairings of the following types:
    1. [aham upanetreṇa] m -> u (vowel case) : Here the म् is retained as it is followed by a vowel. Easy peasy.
    2. [kumbhaṁ paśyāmi] m-p (consonant case with म anunāsika) : Here the म् changes to ं, but it doesn't make a difference because pa-varga has म anunāsika anyway.
    3. [sundaraṁ kumbhaṁ] m -> k (consonant case with ङ anunāsika) : Here the म् changes to ं, but since ka-varga has ङ anunāsika, the pronunciation changes from sundaramkumbham to sundaraṅkumbham. Does this mean that an alternate way to write AND pronounce this correctly is: सुंदरङ्कुम्भं ?

    Thank you Shubha!
I have question... In the version of Gayatri mantra I read from, first Om is spelled ओम् and first syllable of next word is भू . Although 'bh' is consonant, do we consider 'bhU' to be a vowel, thus the spelling of Om as ओम् ? The following Om is spelled as ॐ and first syllable of next word is त (tat savitur... )
Is this a correct understanding of your lesson in this video?
    🙏

    • @tattvam
      @tattvam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      भ् is always a consonant.
We can put म् or ं when the next immediate sound is a consonant. But it must always be म् when the next immediate sound is a vowel.

There should be clarification if a word ending with anuswar is followed by consonant of group of क च ट त प then pronunciation of anuswar will be ङ् ञ् ण् न् म् respectively. This video is on a different topic and bang on. I had always wondered why we use ं sometimes and म् at other times while writing.. If u want to learn the pronounciation of anuswara, it depends on the first letter of the word following it. There is a different video for that. But to add I am unable to differentiate between the sounds of the two while chanting..

    Ma'am,
    I've a query...
    In म् and ं,
With म् we have to write as, "अहम् आगमिष्यामि or अहमागमिष्यामि।"
And we cannot write as "अहं आगमिष्यामि।" Which'll be a wrong way.
    And with ं as, "अहं पठिष्यामि or अहम्पपठिष्यामि।"
*But can we also write it as,*
    *"अहम् पठिष्यामि।"?*

      "किम् गमिष्यति or किङ्गमिष्याति(while doing sandhi)".

      "किं करिष्यसि and किं गमिष्यति" respectively
