    📺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO :
Having never used Izotope Ozone to mastering any tracks before I thought I’d give it a go. I’ve taken some of what I would normally do on outboard equipment and transferred it to the Ozone mastering system.
I hope you can get some great from this…I didn’t think it was too bad for my first go :)

This is so SO helpful! I really appreciate how you balance between using your technical knowledge and ears when mastering. Honestly, if you hadn't have said you only had a few minutes with ozone before this video I would have had NO idea. You were using it as if you had been using it for years. I also admire the way you approach mastering. I have a tendency to make the track as loud as possible, but end up missing so many steps along the way (like filtering the super low boomy frequencies like you did). I think the most important thing I learned from you is to not overthink every little thing in every plugin. More times than not I end up ruining my mix with either crazy EQ cuts or wacky Exciter settings that over saturate the snot out of my mix. All in all I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and passion with us. Thank you!

I’m not sure if you mentioned this or not in the video, but I think it’s important for the people watching this to understand that this was mastered for quality and not for loudness. This is what mastering “should” be. Sadly, this isn’t what mastering really is anymore. It’s mostly the same steps, except you’re pumping way harder into the limiter, or softclipping generously, or both, and then attempting to compensate for the crap ton of squashing and harmonic distortion that you’ve just destroyed your track with.

Baby, use master assistant to get some basic levels, FIRST! Then go back to their chain and modify that, then you can fool around with all the thing you know about, just add them to the chain. I have found that modifying the input and output channel levels can give me a master that is as loud as I want, but the Ozone comes up with a very usable final product if I allow master assistant to set them first. Also, anytime you modify something in the chain it changes the final mix and anything else in the chain. So, if you start at the beginning of the chain and and start tweaking stuff, that tweak is lost by the time you're at the end of the chain - you modified it by everything you did afterwards. What I found is that if you stray very far from their suggested levels you wreck the whole master. Drums are the perfect example, to stand out everybody likes to overdo them, but with Ozone 9 that just doesn't work. Finally, your output level is too high in your example, bring it down to the input levels, it'll still be loud enough. I've released almost 400 Pond5 mixes with Ozone 9, it's super fast and I always get a strong, loud comparative mix. If it sounds weak, just bring up the output channel, but that never happens to me anymore. That's how I use it. I'm pond5.com/artist/jeff25331.

Ozone have very good algorithms behind their software. Transparent and clear as a tear. If one looks into plugins that emulate hardware closer and color the sound in a certain way (like the Nomad Factory), then Ozone might not be the best choice thus. But for mastering and even mixing in a transparent way, very few other plugins can match Ozone.

Great video ... I'm doing 90% right:)) The one thing I don't use is EQ mid - side and almost never widening of the mix, because you have your mix instantly "un-glued" and you're loosing power if it's a dance track ... When you put in to the chain EQ2 module (mid-side eq) does the changes in this module (mid-side) effect also the whole stereo mix and this is just "listening from the side" or this actually effects only sides of the master mix? Thanks again for great video.

Shouldn’t your assistant be mixing your mic level so you’re not yelling above the music level? FIRED!

Thank you for adhering your knowledge :) How do you bouncing in Logic Staeaky? Because I found that bounces in logic are more dull and has lower dynamics than a project.

Streaky when do we use Ozone 9 in the final mixing or mastering ?? Is it the final step for mastering or did you just use Ozone to continue the mixing process ?? Also, when mixing, what plugins should go in the master track and what plugins usually are used for piano, bass guitar, drums, strings, trumpets, electric guitar and percussion track for each of these individual tracks ?? That would really help us if you did videos on that. Thanks. Cheers.

Do you have a link to Matt’s soundcloud or socials etc? You’ve used a few of his songs in your videos and he’s pretty good! I can’t find any mention of where to find him in your videos or descriptions which is a shame. Other people in the comments of this video & others also looking for his music...

I have produced a rock song and I am considering buying the plugin. How do you master a rock track with rich guitars and a punchy drum set?
