- Most bodyboarders will agree that our journey through the sport is something that is always evolving. No two waves are ever the same and even the very best riders in the world are constantly learning, tweaking and improving their skills. It’s always good to break down your riding, critique yourself and even that of your peers. It is this quickest way to learn.
In our latest instructional video two of our very own coaches Chris Burton and Matt Davies break down their waves at a recent staff training session at The Wave in Bristol. The hoped outcome of this exercise was that all involved came out a better rider and that it presented some pointers that can help everyone looking to improve their Drop Knee riding.
Chris wanted some advice to tweak his barrel riding and cutbacks on the knee. One of the main points observed was how the positioning of Chris’ inside leg over the board was effecting his entry into both manoeuvres. Upon further inspection we revealed that this was influenced by his upper body positioning and that by adjusting it his weight distribution would improve along with his posture and ultimately his riding. It goes to show how useful our video analysis sessions are for riders of all ability levels.
We’re heading back to The Wave in Bristol for more man-made fun this October. Drop us a line if you would like to come along and up your bodyboarding game.

This is very helpful! Thank you guys!
Great tips, I'm guilty of all three of these and never even knew I was doing it.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome ! Needs a rigid board and a hard slick helps. I thought my best board ever was.
A bat tailed, hard slick. 70/30 railed Eppo Gun.
You need a rigid board and great flexibility.
I used to practice on a grassy slope.
I pulled a drop Knee spinners in the surf once at the point in between Boovie's Bay and Constantine in 3-4 foot waves
That's a hard skill. Only a few folks can do drop Knee.
Find and board are important. Interesting footage of Dave Hubbard. Awesome ! Needs a rigid board and a hard slick helps. I thought my best board ever was.

Cool story. Thanks for sharing. ✌
No problem. I am aged 43 now and probably need to find some new accommodation. I am currently located in a English City and the accommodation here seems unaffordable.
I have 2 kids that I would like to see. But they're already located in two different cities.
Back when I was 17. I wanted to go surfing every day.
I learned a lot about that sport through my enthusiasm and passion for that activity.
These days. I am into cooking and home economics. I am lucky to leave the house once a week.
There's a letter up there. Which. I suspect is related to the housing. I can't seem to find, or afford in at the moment.
Hopefully. I will get free of this girlfriend who keeps taxing me and this cycle. Of heartbreak.
Things seem t.
Oh . Who's that ?
It seems like there's always someone in my way. If I want to try and do something. Or even. If I don't want to do anything. There's someone there to force me into
Another great tutorial! Great work boys. 🤘
Thanks!
Amazing video, really helpful. I will practice it in the water
Glad you like it! 🙌
Can you do a "Getting Started with Drop Knee"? Some questions I have are:
1. Do I need a certain kind of board or fins?
2. Which foot should I put forward? Is it kind of like goofy vs regular on a skateboard, snowboard, or surfboard?
3. Should I put my the leash hole on the opposite side of where my front foot would be?
1.short stubby rigid fins. 2.any foot forward u like. 3. Leash plug goes top approximate centre of the board, careful of any stringers when u punch the hole through.
Just do it
We’re working on it 👌🏼
Great video!... glad someone else is guilty of sitting back on their heel lol, I'm sure in some situations it might help but I've found myself doing it for no reason... I'm working on it.
Let us know how you get on 🙌
Seems logic about the arms controling turns (head and torso too) and balance considering stand up surfing. The bum thing too, causing lack of speed. But applying this... 🙏🏽🥴🔨
Glad you think so.
great video
Thank you
Great video. Makes me want to dropknee. Maybe one day when I’m older! 😂😂
It's certainly a game changer!
Let’s see a 2nd video after this breakdown.
Watch this space!
Maybe a thicker board with a deep crescent tail would help to generate more speed and bring the rear leg forward? Also, fins with a shorter blade may help with better knee and foot placement. I find it's much easier to get into position with Bluncuts, Custom-X, or MS Viper fins than with Churchills.
Maybe it would. Keep trying different things to see what suits you best.
If the wave was a right, would you change the leg that is bend on the board ?
No. You keep your stance. Very unusual to switch stance during a wave. Also in between waves. Like tennis, you don't pass the racket to your other hand... You ride forehand or backhand, depending on the wave going left or right. Goofy or regular, you decide bro, you call the shots here. Pretty talented stand up surfers can switch stance though.
Na you don’t wanna be trying my to be both sides of the board , just pick what’s most comfy
Not normally, but anything is possible on a boogie board 😉
Whats´ the board of the blue lycra guy?
Pretty sure it’s a custom 😉
👍👍👍
