I've been dropkneeing for the last 25 years. Some other tips to add: 1 - Stick to standard crescent tails and channels will definitely help, especially in the bigger suckier stuff. 2 - Drop knee is more similar to surfing so take note of how our cousins draw lines. 3 - Your inside knee is the key to success so treat it like your hip/elbow and dig it in hard. 4 - It will take longer to get the basics down than prone (and possibly standup) but it's very rewarding when it starts coming together.
I use a V-tail. But I would agree not to use a bat tail for DK but it can be done if you want a loosey goosey tail. Standard channels are ok but I rock a dual concave bottom on my whip and it hold better than any standard channel will. I use to ride flat bottom but after having dual concave channel at the bottom, I'll never go back. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@superchanneljim yup. Double concave (DC) has really changed bodyboarding. Ive been riding DC for two years now on Pride Boards way more speed, projection, and position lock on the wave.
I’ve been a mainly dropknee/jackstand bodyboarder for a bit over 11years,I must say your on video is on point. You explained it very well,it’s definitely a great feeling once you get it down💯Practice, practice, practice! Aloha from Oahu,Hawaii 🤙🏽
Ian, you are really down to earth and generous with your knowledge. I love how you mention that sharing your knowledge with us is a blessing and an opportunity for you as well.
Hi Iain! So my 9year old laaitie just starting surfing and he is stoked. Now me being in the water helping him catch waves also got the bug! Use to be a local in Melkbos some 20 years ago! Although miles from comp level. Thanks for all the videos. This sure is going to help when I get my bodyboard!
I feel the best way is to surf as much as possible. Get in the water and enjoy the ocean. You will grow strength both physically and mentally through that. Trying new tricks and progressing as a rider will push your skill levels!
You left the most famous and stylish move off this list; when you get up on your backhand and your front fin hooks the wave and puts you into a forward spin. If you can come out of the spin without falling you can make your kook move look pretty sweet 🤣 and totally planned 😎
Yew! Thanks Iain absolutely love all your how to video's my bodyboarding has improved 100% by just puting your tips in place. I will give these a go next time I'm in the surf I'm sure with your tips I will be ripping DK in no time.
that is so weird man cos I drop knee opposite to how i'd stand up and i just assumed i started learning it the wrong way around and my brain just learnt to adapt
I've been living in Brazil for just over 2 years. We have some amazing beach breaks here in the south, its helped me to really enhance my Dk. Nothing like a Dk barrel, super free flow. I'm coming for that world title kkkk
Nothing I can teach about breathing techniques but try the wimhoff method. And shorebreak are all about letting the wave beat you and don’t fight the water, ever!
Just to add.. I think I'm the only dropknee rider on the island, I live in florianopolis/SC. It's sad that the sport isn't appreciated, I feel it deserves alot more praise.
Hi Iain hopefully you can answer this question. @4:32 You mentioned Sascha Taljaard advised you to practice drop knee in the back line, waiting for waves. Did you mean to practice the movement (Get up, stabilization, or the movement) while you're just in the water but not actually catching a wave ? I've ridden prone pretty much 99% of my time bodyboarding, and very little riding drop knee. At times when I'm waiting for a wave I would do the movements. I want to complete my knowledge in all aspects of bodyboarding, Drop knee is the final discipline. Your video has been very helpful for me. Thank you!
@@iaincampbell_ Thanks Iain, tried this other day, it helped ! I was able to able to at least get in and get a short ride. Im still clumsy on the set up but I'll practice more.
@@iaincampbell_ ya I haven't been in the water in for about 8 years but your videos got me so amped im charging hard again! Thank you for keeping me sane during lock down!
Could you possibly do a DK video about riding backhand. I personally dont struggle with DK on my forehand, but i just cant get up, and keep my balance on backhand. Would greatly appreciate some tips ❤
Hey Ian...thank you so much for this video as there are not too many...in getting to my knees I pull the board underneath me...Is this correct?...thanks

Hey, you probably won't see this, but any chance of getting a drop knee vid for backside. I can't find much about it, and I find it really hard. I couldn't find the follow up video you were going to do. It would be awesome if you could 😁

Hi, Looking for a bit of advice - I have a hip problem that means I can't stand up surf anymore but have found on dry land I can get the drop knee position. Is it possible/efficient to use just the fin on the rear leg so I don't have to bring my front leg round and up so much? Thanks!
Be careful when you are bodyboarding as your hip flexor gets extremely overused. This may be from kicking and possibly stabilising yourself so if you are having problems with your hips I’d be very careful of that. My advice would be to try one fin and see how it feels but be mindful of the hip flexor and stress you’re putting on them.
@@iaincampbell_ Thanks a lot. It is a psoas/arthritis problem. Popping up to my knee on dry land feels fine but I feel the extra lift needed in the water may overstress it. Will try the one fin. Really appreciate the input👍
I can’t get in the water right now so that’s pretty impossible man. And I don’t really have budget to pay for a filmer for my TH-cam tips at the moment. Maybe when this channel grows I will consider that.

I had a board with channels and a single concave, which was so fast and held a line well. I have used dual concave though, next on my list.

I have two questions.
1. Do I need DK board practice? Or practice with my Bodyboards (for prone)
2. Do You also use the same board DK and prone?
You can use the same but some boards are better for prone and some are better for DK
1. No. Majority of the riders on tour ride the same for both dk and prone.
2. Yes. My board is made to be super versatile.
Thank you Iain that was very helpful!
I also stand up regular and drop knee goofy! I thought something was wrong with my brain!

It’s more pulling your body up than actually pulling the board underneath you.

I doubt it. That’s a pretty cheap board unless you find something second hand.

Amazing..... Very good!!!

drop knee-ers throw way thicker fans than surfers and i'm certain it has something to do with the lack of fins and a wider board surface area
That sounds like it could be the reason for sure. There is something about dropknee turns. They often look massive.

Iain when going backside do you put more weight on your front foot?
You need to adjust and move weight to the rail closest to the wave.

Best bodyboards for drop knee? EPS or PE or pp
I would say PP. The others are a bit too soft…

Not at all man. Jump on a board and go for it. 🤙🏼
