    Coming from a Windows background I have some questions:
    1) If I want to install software from the web on Windows with antivirus software you can do an on demand scan of that file/program to ensure it is safe to install, but you haven't got that assurance with MacOS, any web installed app that isn't Apple signed MIGHT be dodgy but you can't scan it to make sure it's clean. I am very used to finding tools etc on the web and then scanning to make sure it is OK, this seems to be dangerous on a Mac.
    2) Apple only uses static definitions that have to be pushed down from Apple if it hasn't got a definition it will presumably let the malware execute. I thought "anti-virus" software also had heuristic systems that can potentially detect "malware like behaviour" even if there isn't a specific definition, therefore they can prevent zero day exploits or newer malware that xprotect can't? It might give a few false positive because of that but surely isn't it better to be safe than sorry?
    3) If you do accidentally authorize a malware installation (because you're not paying attention or accidentally click yes when you meant no) without anti-virus software there is no active means to remove it... you mention the Malware Removal Tool but as you say you have no idea when or if it might catch or remove the active threat as there is no on-demand option.
    I will be getting my first MacBook soon and this lack of control concerns me.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) That is built into macOS. But you shouldn't be installing something from a site you don't trust (Mac or Windows or anything).
      2) You'd have to ask a security expert about that, but from what I understand it is all definitions.
      3) On a Mac you can uninstall the malware yourself if it comes down to that. The system is read-only so you'd just need to know which files to remove. Specifics depend on the malware you installed. If you install malware and don't know how to deal with removing it, take it to an expert who does. But just don't install anything unless you trust it and the site you got it from. If you don't follow that rule then no anti-virus will help you in the end, on any system.

    How about if you are running Win10 on Parallels on the Mac? Is Norton advised for the Windows installation or will the Mac AV software still catch everything that comes into the box whether on MacOS or Windows?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Treat any virtual machine like a spectate computer, because it kinda is. I think Windows experts still recommend AV, so I would install some on that Windows virtual machine if you use it for anything important. Check with a Windows pro for the best option (I’m sure not Norton).

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no manual check. It just works automatically. The iPhone is different because apps need to come from the App Store so malware really isn't a thing. The website issue you mention is a scam, not malware. Scams can come from anywhere, online and offline and anti-virus won't help you with those.

    This is very helpful, thanks, but I have three questions 1). why do companies market Mac-specific antivirus software if it's not really as necessary as they make out, 2). Why are there TH-camrs heavily promoting the pros of these antivirus softwares, and 3). I downloaded a new font for Ms Word, but it turned out not to be a font but Malware. My Mac didn't recognise it was Malware, and I had to download Malwarebytes anti-malware and it found the problem, quaranteened it, and now the Mac is OK.

    • @macmost

      1) Not sure what sort of answer you are looking for here. Because companies are in business to make money? 2) Who? Perhaps they are selling it (affiliate marketing), or it is a paid promotion. Ask them. 3) Not sure of your situation. Would need specifics to comment on that.

      OP is simply wrong. he gives his audience the false sense of security as a Mac user. it's really black and white. either Mac OS can protect itself from unknown malware, or it can't. layered security is the answer, putting all your eggs in one basket doesn't make sense. what happens when the malware disable xprotect? does xprotect have behavioral detection? what about phishing? what about malware in the app store? it already made its way in pass Apple's security. you're not going to rely on another vendor that specializes in security to minimize gaps? OP is outdated and listens to the marketing instead of the teachings

    • @macmost

      Any anti-malware software relies on a series of definitions from the developer. Same with macOS's XProtect and MRT. My observation is that Apple is by far the fastest to respond with updates, which is no surprise since they know about potential problems (threats, not actual malware) before other companies would.

    I have malware in my Mac. If I open a chrome or safari browser, unwanted pages are opening themselves, this causing interruptions on my work.

      Sounds like you downloaded and installed something you shouldn't have. If you aren't sure how to diagnose and get rid of it on your own, take it to an expert for help. I wouldn't delay. I wouldn't use a computer with malware on it for a second.

      @@macmost I have done it myself and it’s working fine now. You are right Mac doesn’t need AVS’s. Got to be careful on what applications are downloaded…

    I Dont agree.
    Most of us exchange files with windows machines and therefore it is a good idea to have a check on them. Also, there a several free virusscanners. You dont have to let them run in the background all the time, just do a check every couple of days, specially on older Macs who cannot run the most up to date version of MacOS

    Mac doesn't allow external codes such as company developed programs. Therefore there is no virus. Is this good? No...therefore, companies and developers don't like Macs.

    Do you still stand by this in 2024, a lot of people are now saying that Macs do need antivirus

      A lot of people always say this. Many are getting paid by the apps they are pushing.

      @@macmost Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. My suspicions were certainly peaked by all the affiliate links. I have also noticed some independent advice regarding antivirus for Mac too, however, I wonder if these people aren't truly experts but just regurgitating information from someone who was getting paid.
