Although I was pulling for HVL and hoped she would be great, she never looked explosive with the ball. Very seldom beat her defender to the basket for layups. So while understanding that she was learning a new position, it seamed to me that her overall ability as a player just wasn’t good, including her shot from any area of the court. I wish her well wherever she goes. With her size, she will need to be a great shooter and defender in the WNBA if she’s unable to be a pg, otherwise she will get cut. This scenario would’ve been the case if she would’ve stayed at Louisville.

  • @_shesherownboss

HVL came to LSU wanting to learn the PG position, & a GREAT player would be able to adjust and handle business. She was a deer in headlights all season. Exactly. You either got it, or you don't. Unbelievable, the other four starters made her look like a freshman. No wonder Walz didn't want to develop her. HVL lacks a sound mind under duress. If Smith was healthy, LSU would've at least made it to the finals, even with how horrible she played. Only 20% fg in the tournament. A coach can only lead and guide a player. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink it. The bottom line is, if she really wanted to play point guard, she would've tried better than that. No confidence in herself.

I've watched HVL since she was at Cashmere High School. She has been a standout/star every place she's went, including her gold medals with the U.S. junior national teams. She already proved she could play at a very high level for Louisville and can we not fool ourselves in to thinking women's SEC basketball is like SEC football. It's good but not nearly that dominant. I see this as a failure of Mulkey and not adapting the scheme to her players. It's not like HVL was the only reason they didn't win the national title. It was always going to be South Carolina this year and I would argue it wasn't just HVLs expectations that fell short under Mulkey this year. That woman has an ego bigger than Geno Auriemma's and that is saying something. HVL is a stud and I hope she has a huge bounce back year at TCU. Mulkey is toxic and I loathed the day HVL signed with LSU, as I felt there were much better fits for her.

HVL was played as a PG because she wanted to learn the PG position and Kim was a PG and won championships playing that position. HVL is short and knew she need to be about to know the pg role in order to have a better chance at being WNBA ready. When HVL came to LSU that was one of her stipulations and Kim kept her word. She just didn’t mesh well with the program.

I believe Hailey came to LSU to win a National Title, she was already killing it at Louisville in the NIL game but at LSU she was forced to Gaurd the oppositions best Gaurd and failed not because she sucked but because she just couldn't gaurd bigger faster gaurds. These things happen but if Van Litte wants to play in the WNBA she will be in that situation early and often. She is basically a 2 Gaurd and Coach Mulkey allowed her to play out of position which most of the time she did well until she had to defend someone bigger and or faster...

Sweetie just an FYI, well actually a few…..if Mulkey is a coach, why did LSU win the national championship last year? Yes the girls did that, but you actually need a coach to help you win….and Mulkey was also the coach last year. As for Hailey, the reason for why it didn’t work out is because Hailey tried being a point guard which wasn’t her strong suit, thus her scoring went down a lot. Had she stayed with the position that she was used to playing at Louisville, it would’ve been better.

However Hailey is a scorer accustomed to playing the off guard position. As a player coach Mulkey was a great point guard distributing the basketball. Coach Mulkey should have let Hailey play her natural position even if she had to come off the bench.

I don't know about HVL's mental state ("she didn't want it that much" - @_shesherownboss) or how she didn't fit in with the personality of the other players, as in, was she really accepted as part of the team (like why Kateri Poole was let go). Those would be pure speculation, those I do wonder. What I did see was her not able to play point guard within the scope of the team style. Course I have no respect for that style - basically a 1v(however many that other team decided to crash the 1). And when it came time for HVL to step up to the three point line, that just was not there. Then again, who on that team could be counted on. How many bunnies were missed late in the season?

While I’m a huge HVL fan, and she’s personally my favorite player……the reason for why Hailey didn’t do that good at LSU, isn’t because of the team or 100% Kim Mulkey……it’s because Hailey tried to switch to a new position that she wasn’t used to playing. She wanted to be a point guard going into LSU, and while I’m all for athletes wanting to try new positions…..the timing was bad. She should’ve started training for that position back in 2022, or the day after LSU won that championship. If she had started training like 2 years in advance just in general, by time she got to LSU if she still decided to transfer there she would’ve already been acclimated to the point guard role, and all she would’ve had to do is adjust to LSU’s program and how they approach the point guard role. Plus having an athlete that can play more than one position, and actually be good at it…..it’s a bonus. Now a lot of people wanna try and drag Mulkey down by saying that she messed Hailey up…..Mulkey is a small part of the issue, but Hailey’s the one who decided to play a new position. If Hailey had just remained in her same position that she was at for Louisville when she came to LSU, things could’ve been different and she actually would’ve fit in, but trying to play a new position is what actually messed her up. I don’t even think Mulkey told her that they need a PG, or asked Hailey to be one….I think Hailey wanted to be one in general but it’s just not her style.

I also didn’t think HVL was a good fit at LSU, but tbh she should’ve never been assigned to guard Caitlyn Clark in the elite 8 game. That responsibility should’ve either gone to Flau’Jae or Poa IMO. If you watched how South Carolina’s Raven Johnson played against Clark, she completely took the wind out of Clark’s sails with her aggressive and precise style of play. That is a coaching mistake and is completely on Kim Mulkey for not thinking that one through.
