It was one of the things MR and Dan agreed on when they discussed on how to continue after the unhoard, and Dan wanted to do that so he would "erase" the hoarded WRs by beating them live on his stream. However, he never did. He broke his promise and never beat a number of his own hoarded WRs, and instead played other courses strategically to attack Matthias and to gain him champ status again. It was ultimately Matthias, just a couple weeks ago, who finally improved the last of Dan's hoarded WRs. So it took almost a full year to beat the last hoarded WRs - when usually Matthias could take back WRs in hours or days. However, the hoard will basically never be "undone". Dan improved for 15 months and now has a huge lead in experience on some courses where Matthias needs weeks (!) of grinding to get into WR territory. Weeks that Dan uses to improve other WRs again. It basically reversed the roles where now Matthias has to attack and Dan can defend. My favorite part of this video was the fact you were actually able to interview with well-known Mario kart players across the community that have opinions with MR and Dan. Combined with the personal drama and competitions that I didn’t know after watching the Summoning Salt video, this was worth the time sitting down and watching this video.
Dan now holds 32/32 and is crowned champion, and Matthias has retired from MK64 because of Dan's unsportsman-like choice to hoard times. Regardless of his skills, I do not believe that Dan deserves that spot. I hope someone better and with true speed running honor can dethrone him once and for all.
Matthias tried and failed to reclaim after quite some time is the main reason of him quitting. By the end, it was clear that it's no longer two persons rivalry anymore, Dan was better in all aspect. If someone broke the record he could easily best them because the hoarding record was actually slower than what he was capable of mostly because Dan invested a lot of time by the end of the rivalry. All 32 records are now not because of the hoarding, most players has tried and failed to broke it including Matthias.
@@yudistiraliem135 dude he had an entire group of the best all gunning to take him down. What do you think would’ve happened to Dan had he openly claimed his aims for 32/32. The exact same thing. @@sECUREij I've followed this whole show from the outside, and from everything I see, the A1A and MR were incredibly tight knit. MR welcomed the competition, and have said he loved it. But when Dan played dirty, it literally broke him. He stated as much in his retirement post. Part of the challenge of getting 32/32 was fighting A1A and the runner-up. It's just part of the competition. But if you assassinate the spirit of your runner-up, everything gets easier. Dan couldn't get number 1 and didn't want to face the fight, so he just killed (the spirit of) the next best player. It's disgusting, and people defending him just seems to like the spectacle of sports rather than the spirit of it.
I understand that lots of viewers don't like what Dan did, but I'd never go so far as to call him a bad human, he's helped out on a ton of my MK64 videos as well as productions made by others. To quote Scrubs' Dr. Cox... "There’s nothing wrong with a one hitter there Barbie. I'm glad I found this, you have a great future here. I love speedrunning videos like this. You will go far. Thank you for giving me something to listen to.
Dan now has the records, but I still think he shouldn’t be allowed into the Hall of Fame. His hoarding went directly against the spirit of the community, and he wanted other players not allowed into the HoF for petty reasons. Seems fair to me.
Meh, the hoarding doesn’t change the skill it takes to do it. The reason Matthias quit is simple, he couldn’t broke Dan’s record he wrote it himself he just couldn’t dedicated more time and who could fault him? If it’s no longer fun then he shouldn’t spend that much time playing IMO. It’s unfortunate for him because he wrote that he wanted to quit for some time already and likely waiting to be the first person to reach 32/32 and then retire. If Dan has no skill or if MR’s was better and he kept uploading better results then no amount of hoarding could change the result.
@@yudistiraliem135 I would argue that neither players were more skilled than the other. If the positions were reversed I feel like Dan would have the same reaction that MR did. It just kills the drive because all of your progress is gone in one day with no chance to respond. I think what MR did is commendable because it drove players to try and stop him and he made the whole community better by attempting to go for 32 World Records. MR could've just grinded and grinded and then mass uploaded all the World Records but he gave them a chance.
Brilliant work! I now watch these streamers regularly. Hopefully the hatchet can be buried! 3-7-21 Dan has 20 WRs, 5 of which are ties with MR. The vids changing volume and not knowing who was talking my only gripes.
Matthius already had the 31/32. He was basically one mistake away from claiming 32/32, and he did it with complete transparency, allowing his opponents to challenge his records everytime he made one.
The Dan Hoarding Conversation starts @ 1:30:37 I still HIGHLY recommend ppl watch all the video first (Abyssoft did a great job), but for those that know all the history up to that point, use the time stamp.
I already see the A1A alliance as stretching the concept of fair play. It would be more fair to let MR get the records before concentrating so much effort into beating him, since he definitely was the best player. Hoarding times to prevent others from doing this to him, on Dan's part, was even more unfair. It wasn't cheating or against the rules, but it's a dirty move nonetheless IMO.
Honestly if Dan hadn't taken part in A1A I would have no problem with the hoarding, I know I'm in the minority on this but I feel like the A1A doesn't just stretch the concept of fair play but smashes it into tiny little pieces. When your opponents are meta gaming I think it's fair to do the same.
I think my problem arises in that Dan both took part in the A1A and committed to hoarding times. The A1A was the public front put up to prevent Matthias’ perfect record. Dan participating in that but also going behind everyone’s back is literally being two-faced.
I disagree. The A1A didn't do anything wrong. If anything, the fact there was such strong competition for all that time made things a lot more interesting than if Matthias had swept all 32 without any battle (a la Dan). Besides, if MR had just swept all 32 records, do you think Mario Kart 64 would still be of interest in 2024? I don't. What Dan did was completely the opposite of being competitive... he KNEW Matthias would fight back, so he essentially tied Matthias' arm behind his back.
Hypocrisy from Dan.. about getting 32/32 and ppl should try stop matthias.. about the achievement being overshadowed if there's nobody there to challenge it.. from the guy who hoarders world records. Screwed matthias and the a1a over in the process because he knew with those guys chasing him he had no chance
Didn’t expected to watch the full video in one shot, but omg it is so captivating ! Maybe just everytime put a text saying who is talking who be perfect !
On par with other great SpeedDocs like Summoning Salt and Bismuth, Karl Jobst and TomatoAnus. Your in depth additions and going to the players for direct input is a style all its own. Solid.
A small part of me wants MR to vome out of retirement with 32 world records all hoarded away for a few years. Won't get the title cos hoarding is now banned, but that middle finger to everyone defending hoarding would be hilarious. He wouldn't do that though... you either have class or you don't.
I actually liked this video even more than SS's video on Matthias. Between your inclusion of interview bits, more thorough timeline the rivalry, and to me portraying the forces in this video as more human on all sides, I found it *extremely* entertaining.
Matthias being the villain at the beginning of the story and then turning into the hero at the end is an amazing twist. Far better than any recent movie twists
The thing I find the most disgusting is that Dan participated in the alliance to stop Matthias and after they truncated his goal Dan started hoarding WR to not recive the same treatment they gave to Matthias. I don't think Dan is the devil but he did one of the lowest things I've ever seen.
I LOVE Mario Kart 64 competitive mentality. In my place in Germany we also Had a small competitive MK64 Scene... But that was more than 20 years ago. So we could never try to Challenge Matthias and Others... Damn 😅
That's...not really what getting Behemoth'd _was_ though. Getting Behemoth'd referred to having a record beaten by a relatively new/unknown player that didn't have a lot of eyes on them prior. The original occurrence wasn't an instance of hoarding, the run was put out when it happened as normal.
Absolutely great documentary! My only gripe is that it's hard to follow at times while you're explaining the live events, as someone who doesn't follow mk64 speedrunning, I kept getting lost as to who was who and who was actually winning and if the footage showing was the race you were talking about, but that could be my fault for not paying 100 percent attention. Other than that, fanfic
Yeah this is a great vid. There's a bit of an anti-Dan slant to it (like King of Kong) but they're all top players worthy of lots of respect. I also didn't realise so many old-school retired players had turned up to the meets.
Do you not think the anti-Dan slant is warranted? The video, the community, the competitors, they all compete, in the spirit of competition. What Dan did was anti-competitive. Seems pretty clear cut.
@@bigian4649 He fought dirty and probably convinced some people that he's not a great person, but being a good or bad person doesn't affect his skill. He didn't hide strategies, only results, and people are using that as an excuse to downplay his skill.
TH-cam's algorithm's at it again lol. I got obsessed with Tetris a couple of years ago because of it, and now I know WAY more about MK64 than I ever thought I would. Thanks for this video and your others. I may have to go back and play some old school MK (Super Circuit was my jam back in the day). I think what Dan did was wrong, but at least he did officially become champion back in January, and since then he and MR have been trading the title back and forth with one another. As of this comment they've trade the championship 7 times, and I hope we get to see a part 2 someday.
"Officially" still isn't "fairly". The hoarding of 15 months basically reversed the roles, where Dan can defend and Matthias has to attack. This obviously is a huge advantage for Dan. And while MR got into that position years ago without ever hoarding, which was a lot of honest and hard work, Dan took a cheap shortcut to get there. It could've been years of honest competition for Dan to get into that position, if he ever would have, but the hoarding now put Matthias at a disadvantage ever since. Not to mention Dan promised Matthias to not go for champ status again until he would've beaten all his own hoarded WRs, as a way to basically remove any hoarded WRs. But he broke that promise shortly after - and ultimately, just weeks ago, it was Matthias who defeated the last standing hoarded WRs. It took him almost a year to do this, when usually Matthias would take back WRs within hours or days, at most a few weeks. That shows that the hoarding was far more damaging that it may look. The last 11 months saw the times being pushed down by a lot, with WRs every week. Imagine how low the times could be right now if the 15 months before that would've been filled with that kind of competition... the hoarding set back the MK64 community by at least a year.
"I wanted to be champion but knew I couldn't be" so he cheated. Absolutely no respect for this guy, scummy behavior, defeats the entire purpose of the competition and achievement. Dan will go down in history as the guy who couldn't get the achievement legitimately so he resorted to underhanded tactics to get ahead. I see no difference between him and athletes who dope, you can't cut it, don't embarrass yourself and everyone else.
This deserves to be on television. And also, despite being a Borussia Dortmund fan, Mathias's dominance is more reminiscent of Bavaria Munich or Michael Schuhmacher.
Matthias is the greatest MK64 speed runner over and it took the entire goon squad to beat him meanwhile Dan is genuinely a terrible human being and so are the officials who decided to keep Dan’s record while preventing others from doing the same. That’s rigging the system no matter how you slice it. North Korean elections have more integrity than MK64 speedrunning at this point.
I sorta thought VAJ would be... bigger. I'm not sure I can feel too bad about what Dan did even with the "spirit of the community" aspect given that the other players literally banded together to deny Matthias. When your opponents are employing tactics outside of just driving the game I think it's entirely fair to do the same though Dan shouldn't have participated in that either.
HOW DO I WATCH SALT AND HAVEN’T WATCHED THIS! Shame on you TH-cam for taking so long to recommend this video to me and many others in the comments section.
Really Great video!! just a small thing though: you should probably be a bit more careful with the volume levels, some of the clips were way louder than your voice over.
A lot of people are missing the poetic irony in all of this. The whole alliance thing to prevent the MR sweep was completely juvinile and bad sportmanship, so Dan’s dishonest sweep is ultimately what the community deserved. A proper "punishment" if you ask me. You reap what you sow.
Disagree. MR going for all the records did one thing: it inspired competition. Because as it was so well put, if one man has all the records, everybody else looks inferior.
Idk why records are converted. The PAL time is longer so how is it a record? You’re playing an easier game, so why do any of the records count against a record 12 seconds shorter?
I think the fact that Dan had to go to the lengths he did was because of Matthias’ ability to constantly retake records proves Matt is the best 64 runner, plus the absolute dominance in live events.

@@Rinstor why would matthias try to break his own records when going for 32/32, would just be waste of time and not pushing towards his goal.. this was just scummy..
@@sECUREijYou might as well have had no scoreboard in that scenario.
wtf idk how this got recommended to me with so little views but this was one of the best vids ive ever seen
Wow, this is my favorite video you've made yet I think. It even has personal drama!
My favorite part of this video was the fact you were actually able to interview with well-known Mario kart players across the community that have opinions with MR and Dan.
Combined with the personal drama and competitions that I didn’t know after watching the Summoning Salt video, this was worth the time sitting down and watching this video.
This was easily my most ambitious video and the one I'm most proud of, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Dan broke Mattias' spirit to play
Well, at least Abney's going for all the shortcut records, so we have that going for us.
@@yudistiraliem135 dude he had an entire group of the best all gunning to take him down. What do you think would’ve happened to Dan had he openly claimed his aims for 32/32. The exact same thing.
Hyper specialized racers beating his records as he gets them.
What Dan did was a dick move because it didn’t give any of the other guys running MK64 a chance to beat his records. On top of matthias.
It really comes down to this: Dan is a good MK64 player, but a bad human being. Matthias is a good MK64 player, and a good person too.
I understand that lots of viewers don't like what Dan did, but I'd never go so far as to call him a bad human, he's helped out on a ton of my MK64 videos as well as productions made by others. He cares about kart and the community, he just made a mistake when it came to the competitive aspect of the hobby.
@@Abyssoft I understand that he's helped with your videos, but I don't agree that it's one mistake. It's something he did repeatedly, for a year, deceiving everyone online and lying to their faces in person. That's not one mistake - it's who he was, for an entire year. I think it's more likely than not that's who he still is today, and he doesn't show any remorse when talking about it. I just don't think it's forgivable.
@@RaRa-eu9mw So you're just going to hold this over his neck for the rest of life? By all means i believe what Dan did was selfish, when It comes to competition there is no room for cheating, but giving him a type of label as "bad human being" is harsh. :/
@@zioncoleman3646 He has done nothing since to earn forgiveness. He's made promises he later went back on. He's made apologies and then said he doesn't really care. In his last stream he even began playing Summoning Salt's playlist to slap MR in the face.
I absolutely give people the benefit of the doubt, but that has a limit - if you're going to keep forgiving over and over, year after year, then you're just being a sucker.
@@RaRa-eu9mw I understand.
To quote Scrubs' Dr. Cox...
"There’s nothing wrong with a one hitter there Barbie. In fact, it’s miraculous... and I won’t have you of all people cheapen what should be an endless pursuit of perfection just because you want the world to laugh with you tonight..."
...really puts Barbie's 32/32 in perspective.

Its Getting There... Randomly Got A Suggestion For Him Recently. Subbed Today
It has happened, got recommended his stuff lately

I can't think of a bigger compliment than a whole community teamming up against you due to being potentially better than all of them! This was neat.
Correct me if I’m wrong but there are more speedrunners now compared to back then when Matthias wanted to reach 32/32.
Thanks for the beautiful video. I loved the unusual detail you used for the live meets. Looking forward to your future works.
He was 0.03 seconds away from 32/32. Crazy
I had to watch this again after summoning salt uploaded his most recent video that covered the same topic as the beginning of this video
This is really well put together and super interesting!! Really nice job!
The Dan Hoarding Conversation starts @ 1:30:37
I still HIGHLY recommend ppl watch all the video first (Abyssoft did a great job), but for those that know all the history up to that point, use the time stamp.
Just came back to watch the video now that Matthias is champ again
Great work! That was a real nice treat.
I've really enjoyed your speedrun history videos. Keep up the good work!
Great video, I can't even imagine how much work went into this!
Solid.
The fact you covered this much information on a speed run rivalry is very impressive cang wait for you to as a creator to get more attention
This was my favorite video I've ever edited, and I have another planned for 2024.
Matthias being the villain at the beginning of the story and then turning into the hero at the end is an amazing twist. Far better than any recent movie twists
I didnt want the video to end...
I just love MR has just renamed Dan in his streams to a hoarder I love that he fucking deserves all the hate he gets!
The thing I find the most disgusting is that Dan participated in the alliance to stop Matthias and after they truncated his goal Dan started hoarding WR to not recive the same treatment they gave to Matthias. I don't think Dan is the devil but he did one of the lowest things I've ever seen.
Well said bro, spot on
So much work put into this vid. Well done. Your channel is gonna boom.
I LOVE Mario Kart 64 competitive mentality. In my place in Germany we also Had a small competitive MK64 Scene... But that was more than 20 years ago. So we could never try to Challenge Matthias and Others... Damn 😅
Very underrated video! I wish more people talk about Mario Kart 64, and it's community.
Great video, Btw!
Man i watched this vid at least five times now. The amount of passion and work u put in ur vids is rly insane.
theres no rivalry, dan cant do shit without hiding it, Mattias will beat anytime he posts.
Hoarding times in Mario Kart? Tragic.
Hoarding times in Super Metroid?
*YOU GOT BEHEMOTH’D!*
Loved this documentary, wish it was easier to tell who is talking though.
Long video... that I watched from start to finish, absorbed in its content

You made this vid before summoning salt.. Good shii, great quality too
Good video. Just needed names on screen too to show us who is speaking.
Yeah this is a great vid. There's a bit of an anti-Dan slant to it (like King of Kong) but they're all top players worthy of lots of respect. I also didn't realise so many old-school retired players had turned up to the meets.
Thanks for the kinds words, I wasn't expecting to see a legend from the early days comment
Wow, we have an OG here!
That I did Penev! I’ll give you my rundown on va 2017 soon.
So happy I found this channel, this is criminally underrated
Algorithm will make you shine soon bro such good quality vid
This deserves to be on television. And also, despite being a Borussia Dortmund fan, Mathias's dominance is more reminiscent of Bavaria Munich or Michael Schuhmacher.
One of the best speedrunning-videos I've ever seen
Matthias is the greatest MK64 speed runner over and it took the entire goon squad to beat him meanwhile Dan is genuinely a terrible human being and so are the officials who decided to keep Dan’s record while preventing others from doing the same. That’s rigging the system no matter how you slice it. North Korean elections have more integrity than MK64 speedrunning at this point.
All of that footage...crazy
Dan’s 32/32 should have an asterisk on it
AMEN
Best video I have seen all year, absolutely amazing work, keep it up!!
MR coming back is awesome. Revenge is sweet!
I really enjoyed this video, thank you
I sorta thought VAJ would be... bigger.
I'm not sure I can feel too bad about what Dan did even with the "spirit of the community" aspect given that the other players literally banded together to deny Matthias. When your opponents are employing tactics outside of just driving the game I think it's entirely fair to do the same though Dan shouldn't have participated in that either.
I imagine them guys talking shit to eachother in a fun way thru text or phone calls and just being all around good friends? I imagine this right?

What a ride watching this video was! Amazingly done!
clearly y'all have never seen Bob Ross's world record speedrun of Mario Paint 64
I see Dan was visiting the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark forums in 2019.
A lot of people are missing the poetic irony in all of this. The whole alliance thing to prevent the MR sweep was completely juvinile and bad sportmanship, so Dan’s dishonest sweep is ultimately what the community deserved. A proper "punishment" if you ask me. You reap what you sow.
worse than the hoarding imo. MR is the true champ.
Disagree. MR going for all the records did one thing: it inspired competition. Because as it was so well put, if one man has all the records, everybody else looks inferior.
Dirtyyyyy Dan did the community dirty! Matthias for the win. Everyone is allowed to have their opinion on who is the GOAT!
So... an another German dominating another race sport...
Such a Schumacher vibes
Idk why records are converted. The PAL time is longer so how is it a record? You’re playing an easier game, so why do any of the records count against a record 12 seconds shorter?
