She had epileptic seizures, and for some reason, the teachers at her old high school would clear the classroom if she had a seizure, as though she had the plague. She had no friends. Not one. But she had her first seizure at the new high school, and when she opened her eyes, k.d. lang was holding her hand. And all the kids were there, and the teacher explained that it wasn’t anything to be afraid of. After that, she said kd took her under her wing and for the first time in my friend’s life, she had a group of friends. k.d. was considered very cool. I’ve never forgotten the kindness she showed my friend. And anyone who has heard her sing once can never forget.

Listening to that, it's hard to believe that Katherine Dawn started out as country singer, performing in cowgirl boots and a little Western skirt. But you haven't heard anything until you've heard her perform Crying at the concert for her late friend Roy Orbison at the Universal Theater in Cleveland in 1990. It was the most beautiful, heartfelt performance I've ever heard.

He died a year ago, and we had an instrumental version of this played at his service. Not. Ended up listening to it non stop for over a month. Love it and her very unique tones. Brilliant timing and delivery. But, the CD gift that hooked me on KD was a collection of duets with my beloved Tony Bennett. Just brilliant trick and I am glad I fell for it.

I’m not a particular fan of hers, but a few years ago we watched her performance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Sitting on the grass in the early evening with a huge crowd of people, and no one moved when she sang this. She really knows how to hold an audience.
Her end credit song for the Bond film "Tomorrow Never Dies" was much better than the song they used for the opening, but Sheryl Crow was a "big name" and k.d was not. Another good one to check out.

k.d. lang is an incredible powerhouse. Her sound is so real, so incredibly powerful with an absolute minimum of studio trickery. As a Canadian musician, she's a very special point of pride for me and for so many in our country. She absolutely makes this cover her own, and as you point out, she makes really fine, fine musical CHOICES within her considerable vocal power. She reminds me of Sinead O'Connor among female vocalists-not just because she's a huge powerhouse, but because she doesn't ever feel obligated to push the absolute top limit of her voice all the time. It would be exhausting to listeners before it ever got exhausting to her-and just because she CAN do it, doesn't mean it's the most beautiful or tasteful choice. For me, k.d. lang is the exact opposite of the other, maybe better-known powerhouse among Canadian vocalists, Céline Dion. Céline also has a huge, unstoppable voice, and like k.d. lang, she has the good musical taste and sense to shape her sound artistically within that monumental voice. Rather than just dialing up to 10 constantly, Céline is the other unquestionable master of making artistic choices in her dynamics, her phrasing, her pitch, and the direction she takes a song. The difference between them, and here's where a weirdo like me prefers k.d. lang's choices, which are not BETTER but just DIFFERENT-is that Céline always takes the main road of her songs, putting her soft and loud moments, her highs and her lows, in EXACTLY the place you intuitively feel they should go, even if you've never heard the song before. the whole performance feels like you've dreamt it ahead of time, and she just appears to deliver exactly what you feel like you've heard, what you've always heard, even if you don't know the tune. k.d. is the opposite of that. She NEVER puts her highs and lows where I, as a musician, would expect her to put them. There is never a single moment of her bare power, her full-strength performance, that isn't further enhanced by just how SURPRISING it is. As someone who knows the familiar road of these songs, it's like I take the familiar trip from beginning to end, only to find her already there, waiting for me, because she came by some hidden back road to the perfect cover song in a way nobody would ever have anticipated. I'm generally tired of the cover versions of this song. Leonard Cohen has written something like 100 verses to it, and it changed a little virtually every time he sang it. It was such an idiosyncratic song-a weatherbeaten old man's song of desperate hunger for love in all its modes: unlike so many breakup songs, it's a song of endings while there is still so, so, so much to be valued in what has been lost. It's a wise and rich and sexual and emotionally holy song. And I'm so very sick of evangelicals giving it to their 10-year-old girls to sing because they only know one word of the lyrics, "Hallelujah," and think it's some kind of gospel song rather than what it really is. I think k.d. lang is one of the only, only singers who can make me feel like this song has been completely been made anew again. Right after saying how over-covered this song is, here's my little amateur instrumental take on it, which I recorded on a phone about 6 years ago. It was k.d. who inspired me to give it a go as a "learning exercise" to make the most of the whammy bar I'd never learned to use to subtle effect on a new guitar. It's not going to thrill anybody after k.d. lang's take, but hearing this song again just made me want to dust it off and share it. k.d. has a way of making everybody want to be a musician again. I’m not a particular fan of hers, but a few years ago we watched her performance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Sitting on the grass in the early evening with a huge crowd of people, and no one moved when she sang this. She really knows how to hold an audience.

I was fortunate to see her live in a small venue in Melbourne Australia around 2011. She was absolutely magnificent!! We all just sat enthralled listening to that amazing voice. She was porn for the ears!!

I love her subtlety and restraint, her powerful presence, and her ability to grip an audience with a very sparse, minimal performance. She doesn't overdo it or use it as a vehicle to show off her vocal range. I feel like she truly gets this song.
Shadowland her 1987 album. Chef's kiss! I still listen to it today. Owen Bradley, who did Patsy Cline's arrangements, did the K.D.'s as well.
When I heard her sing this at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Vancouver I knew no one need ever sing this song again. Thank you Canada for giving us Leonard Cohen, this song and k d lang, singing it.

@@joesutherland225 I just figured she saw a chance to both ditch the cowboy punk bit and really hit the big time, and took it. But I wasn't paying attention; she just went off my radar for a bit, and when she came back, she was doing this 'adult contemporary' thing, or whatever you call it.
Yeah things kinda went sideways after moving south but she soon reestablished herself down there . My sister got to know her back in the pre fame days so kinda kept me informed a bit .

k.d. lang is an incredible powerhouse. Her sound is so real, so incredibly powerful with an absolute minimum of studio trickery.
As a Canadian musician, she's a very special point of pride for me and for so many in our country. She absolutely makes this cover her own, and as you point out, she makes really fine, fine musical CHOICES within her considerable vocal power. She reminds me of Sinead O'Connor among female vocalists-not just because she's a huge powerhouse, but because she doesn't ever feel obligated to push the absolute top limit of her voice all the time. It would be exhausting to listeners before it ever got exhausting to her-and just because she CAN do it, doesn't mean it's the most beautiful or tasteful choice.
For me, k.d. lang is the exact opposite of the other, maybe better-known powerhouse among Canadian vocalists, Céline Dion. Céline also has a huge, unstoppable voice, and like k.d. lang, she has the good musical taste and sense to shape her sound artistically within that monumental voice. Rather than just dialing up to 10 constantly, Céline is the other unquestionable master of making artistic choices in her dynamics, her phrasing, her pitch, and the direction she takes a song.
The difference between them, and here's where a weirdo like me prefers k.d. lang's choices, which are not BETTER but just DIFFERENT-is that Céline always takes the main road of her songs, putting her soft and loud moments, her highs and her lows, in EXACTLY the place you intuitively feel they should go, even if you've never heard the song before. the whole performance feels like you've dreamt it ahead of time, and she just appears to deliver exactly what you feel like you've heard, what you've always heard, even if you don't know the tune.
k.d. is the opposite of that. She NEVER puts her highs and lows where I, as a musician, would expect her to put them. There is never a single moment of her bare power, her full-strength performance, that isn't further enhanced by just how SURPRISING it is. As someone who knows the familiar road of these songs, it's like I take the familiar trip from beginning to end, only to find her already there, waiting for me, because she came by some hidden back road to the perfect cover song in a way nobody would ever have anticipated.
I'm generally tired of the cover versions of this song. Leonard Cohen has written something like 100 verses to it, and it changed a little virtually every time he sang it. It was such an idiosyncratic song-a weatherbeaten old man's song of desperate hunger for love in all its modes: unlike so many breakup songs, it's a song of endings while there is still so, so, so much to be valued in what has been lost. It's a wise and rich and sexual and emotionally holy song. And I'm so very sick of evangelicals giving it to their 10-year-old girls to sing because they only know one word of the lyrics, "Hallelujah," and think it's some kind of gospel song rather than what it really is. I think k.d. lang is one of the only, only singers who can make me feel like this song has been completely been made anew again.
Right after saying how over-covered this song is, here's my little amateur instrumental take on it, which I recorded on a phone about 6 years ago. It was k.d. who inspired me to give it a go as a "learning exercise" to make the most of the whammy bar I'd never learned to use to subtle effect on a new guitar. It's not going to thrill anybody after k.d. lang's take, but hearing this song again just made me want to dust it off and share it. k.d. has a way of making everybody want to be a musician again. We're awfully proud of her up here, north of the border.
