  • If you have diabetes (pregnant or not), there is a ton of conflicting information out there about the right way to eat.
As it turns out, traditional recommendations (remember the Food Pyramid?) may be steering us wrong. The FDA has been recommending less fat and more grains since the 1980s. So why is it that even though we eat less fat than ever before, we are more obese than ever?
This is a key question that researchers are interested in, and some of the answers will surprise you. Watch today's episode for some encouraging, easy ideas for eating for a healthy pregnancy and healthy life!
    Have a great week!
    Tracy

My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article th-cam.com/users/postUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I learned that oatmeal and fruit raised my glucose levels so I eliminated them from my diet. I have been able to sustain my glucose levels within the normal limits. Thank you for your video, God blessed you!

Thank you for such a great video, before my pregnancy I could eat oatmeal and fruits without any worries. During my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and unfortunately oatmeal and fruit raised my glucose levels. I decided to eliminate them out of my diet and I have been able to manage my gestational diabetes just fine (of course l also increased my exercise time too).❤️

Thank you for saying to steer away from grains and fruits! I feel like so many GD nutritionists are so out of date with their advice. I remember being told to eat around 60 grams of carbs a day with GD. All following their diet plans did was make my sugars go through the roof.
The only thing that helped my GD was to eat very low carb/high protein.

You are so welcome! That makes me so glad to hear. I'm working on a course all about healing GD. It's everything I've learned over the past 20 years as a OBGYN and high-risk MFM. Are you still struggling with GD?

@@DrTracyPapa so would you recommend a keto diet? My midwife made is very clear that I should avoid the keto diet. But I have gd and when I follow her plan, my blood sugar goes up and I tend to stay hungry.

Please help me. Im struggling to find the balance. I was really doing well by eating clean and cutting out the things that made my blood sugar levels spike- ie. All breads, pastas, certain fruits, etc i felt great and finally well enough to enjoy my pregnancy. Then around 2 weeks ago, at my checkup, there were ketones in my urine and I was told that i need to include small portions of healthy carbs...which ive done. But now my numbers are high again and I feel sick, sore and fatigued most of the time. My neck has also gone black again now. What must i do? I dont want to use insuin

The best rule of thumb is to stick to organically grown foods from the dirty dozen list and you should be ok! When you cook your veggies properly that should also kill any harmful bacteria.

@@DrTracyPapa I call your office but they told me i have to have a referral from
My current obgyn, i have a question i didn’t pass my 1 hour glucose test my glucose levels was over 200 after that they put me on a diet my levels were 178 or lowest 96 during the day or sometimes my highest 124 and lowest 95, they had put me on insulin morning and afternoon but i haven’t get my first shot yet. So my question is can i control my sugar with a more strict diet? Or there’s any other option like pills because im freak out and panicking with insulin shots i think 2 a day is too much.

Ok but how do you portion all of this to not pass the 75g carb count? All of this is for sure, not in a 75 range. It already says 6 on the one package.

    • @DrTracyPapa
      @DrTracyPapa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It can be frustrating, right? Optimal carb counts are different for everyone. Start your meals with vegetables that have plenty of fiber, like broccoli, salad greens, cauliflower, peppers, squashes, and green beans. Add proteins like chicken, fish, meats, and eggs. Finish with fruit or starches like bread, rice, or potatoes. Blood glucoses will usually improve with this type of plan.

You can be successful with a vegan diabetic diet. Just make sure you're still getting plenty of protein. Some vegan sources of protein are tofu, whole grains, and beans.

Hi! Foods to avoid including whole fruits and rolled oats?? Wow.
How is fruits and oats unhealthy? I know it has carbs and sugar in it, but fruits and oats are also very high in fibre. High fibre foods is what diabetics need in their diet. Because fibre slows down the release of sugar from food, thus does not cause spike in insulin levels. It is usually low glycemic index foods. Even sweet dates fruit (surprisingly has low GI value) is good for diabetics when eating in moderation (not more than 3 a day), and research has proven dates fruit doesn't increase blood sugar levels in diabetes patients.
Diabetes patients still need carbohydrates and sugar in their diet for energy, and we don't need to eliminate it completely, we just need to choose complex carbohydrates. That's the difference.

Agreed, I have oatmeal about half the time for breakfast and my sugars have been fine. I usually stir some banana and peanut butter in. My dietician said whole fruits are fine but try to eat them with a protein.

I find good recipes in lots of places. I have a ton of cookbooks, but I find most ideas online these days. Pinterest has some good ones. I also search for keto or paleo versions of favorite casseroles. And I subscribe to Cook's Illustrated for great recipes and reviews of different foods and kitchen tools.

I would not completely eliminate carbohydrates, but do make sure that the carbs you're eating are complex - broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, bell peppers, salad greens, zucchini, quinoa, whole grain bread, and berries.
