  • This is the Equipment we use at SOTAR to clean AR-15's. I will do a detailed follow up video showing me clean an AR-15 with this setup.

Three years later and I'm still hoping for a full SOTAR "how to clean your rifle" video!

You mention the how to video of cleaning...but I cant find that video. Can you point us in that direction?? Thanks

Would be great if you could do a complete cleaning video of an AR for beginners. The barrel, bcg and anything that could be cleaned after hard use. Step by step removal, cleaning and putting back together of the complete rifle.

When I was in the military, on rare occasion, we were permitted to use a multiple station firearm/part washer with a simple green and water solution.
Normally it was after advanced weapon training courses where we would fire 4000+ rounds through our M4s.

I started using my heated sonic tank to clean BCGs this weekend. Mine is running a similar mix of Simple Green and water as well. I put them in for 20 minutes and they came out perfectly clean. Not a spot on them. I had to do zero scrubbing. I washed them off with water and then Acetone to displace the water. After letting them dry I have them a good lubing with Cherry Balmz and put everything back together.

I have cleaned my black powder rifles in my bathtub for years now. Hot water and a little simple green. And scrub with a cleaning brush. Works perfectly and it’s free.

Is there a part 2 on cleaning the AR-15 rifle?

In the army, when I would come in from the field, I would always take my rifle into the shower with me..
Water worked fine, as long as you dry and lubricate.

Great video. All the bucket heaters I find on Amazon of this particular style say to not allow the black housing on top to be submerged in the water.

I used a tank like that for years…water and Simple Green. A few Armors classes I went to taught me this. For small parts and handguns I use a sonic cleaner.

Have a parts washer, haven't used it for firearms yet. I do have that same ultrasonic cleaner you have on the bench. I borrow industrial simple green we get in 55gal drums. I couldn't believe what it did to a BCG the 1st time. I ran it several times so it's super hot. When it came out it didn't have a spot of oil or anything on it. It cleans to the point it almost looks bead blasted. If you get it super hot most of the water evaporates instantly anyway. So simple, little time in the tank, and wipe down with oil and its spotless. Barrels do just as good.

And I thought my Uncle was odd when he told me the Army guys would take their M1's into the hot shower with them and clean everything!

So what if you used a different solution? Like ballistal and water? Love to hear more about that.

Be very careful if one decides to use an aquarium heater. My daughter used a fancy, expensive one, and it killed (boiled) her fish when she had set the "Thermostat" to 73 degrees F.

Would you recommend using something like carb cleaner or brake kleen spray to displace the water solution after cleaning?

Yes, that's always an option, but I think he also stated that the tank in his old one was rusted out, and that was a large part of his decision to replace it as well.

I have two of the newer MkII uppers from BCM, it’s good stuff. There is actually one featured in this video.
