When I flew Emirates, they had very strict policies for economy and premium economy passengers: "1" item. I brought the Biaggi zipsack underseat-to-carryon bag. I packed a small backpack sling with all my inflight essentials and grabbed it out of my luggage before stowing it in the overhead. I've traveled internationally many times but that was the 1st time I encountered that restriction.
I’ve never flown them, but I have heard that from a lot of you! I hope everyone that books with them knows what’s allowed and what’s not! Very smart of you to do what you did :)
OMGOODNESS! I'm soooo happy I found your video. I was worried about having to check my suitcase and possibly lose my clothes and NOW I don't have to be worried because I now know I can have my (within the size limit) hard case bag with me in the overhead compartment and I can have my backpack at my seat. So thankful you made this video and clarified things for me. Now all I need to do is make sure I pack everything I need. LOL
ive only flown one round trip before and it felt like a fever dream, i have no idea how i managed to get to china and back on my own. im finally going on a trip for the first time in 3 years and this was so helpful.
I usually don't have problems with my hand carried bags and personal items but there was one time when I had with me a hard case as my carry on that I have already weighed at home but my personal item was a backpack. To be clear, I have already traveled with this setup before but in a different country. This time, I was stopped by an airport security officer. He told me that a personal item can only be a handbag or a purse and not a backpack. I was pissed as I know I have been allowed to carry the same backpack as a personal item before but I didn't want to argue with him so I took out a Longchamp tote and transfered my stuff into it. Bringing in the tote ws a last minute decision. I only decided to bring it as I still had space on my hand carry. If I had not packed that tote I don't know what I would have done.
@@ItsTheKellys Muscat airport. I work in Oman and I usually travel once a year to go home. Other times I have had no problems but I used to carry a tote and a bigger back pack for the overhead bin. First time for me to use a hard case and backpack combo. At first I thought he would have an issue with my hard case but it was the backpack he was having an issue with. I told him it was my personal item. But then he told me it should be a purse or handbag to be considered one. Maybe it's just that particular guy because the other staff at the checkin counter told me I should be ok. I still transferred my stuff though as he was the one sitting on the area where they were checking the weight and size of the hand carried bags. Maybe he was just having a bad day or he just has some beef with backpacks. I saw one other woman carrying a ginormous shopping bag after me and she had no problem getting in.

We were just looking into it as my girlfriend is going on a business trip from ny to ohio for 3 days on american airlines & bought a carry on.. the carry on measurements were like a half inch UNDER what measurements are supposed to be. What we didn't know is when they sell it to you they dont count the wheels. We just read the airline does. So now we have to rush in the morning & get a new one & pack it before 9am. British Airways is similar and I'm stressing out trying to find the biggest personal item I can take that still has the features I want. I think I've settled on the Tucano backpack. I've ordered it and once it arrives, I'll measure it to ensure it fits BA's allowance of 16" x 12" x 6". What airlines do you travel on that would consider that hard shelled roller case carry-on? Every airline I have ever flown that is checked baggage. Hard shelled and wheeled they do not repeat NOT allow as carry-on. you can only use the backpack style.
I’ve flown all over the world (88 countries and 7 continents) for the past 8 years on several airlines, carry on only. I only use hard shelled luggage.
I’m going to fly for the first time and going to LA for the first time on the 23rd so I needed to know lol I just didn’t want to mess up and get flustered or something
That carry on bag is a little on the large size. Carry on size requirements can vary based on the airline you are flying. A safe one too buy is one around 22 x 14 x 9 and under 8 lbs.

Your liquids have to be in the clear quart size bag. I always have my liquids in that and a separate small bag for non liquid cosmetics like makeup and toiletries. I have started using a lot of non liquid shampoos to help make more room! Also, consider using a contact case for a small amount of serums and oils. Saves so much space.
Now that you've tried all the things, including the new Beis exapandable backpack, and the Amazon and Target dupes out there for the Mini Weekender and the Mother Lode...what's your best Kelly's Approved Carry On and Personal Item combo?!? I know you're testing the July bag now, and I'm guessing you may have a different combo for your domestic travel vs international, but inquiring minds want to know!😜Ok, and one other question...do yall just need to do a collab with a company and create your own collection??? Ooh please do a video on this!
I would love to collab and make my own collection haha. That’s a dream! I haven’t traveled with july yet, that will be in January. Level 8 has been great so far. If I only had to have combo, it would be July or level8 with Beis backpack (regular not expandable) Which is what I’m doing now.
@@ItsTheKellysthanks for the update! I love the backpack but I used it pretty heavily packed and it didn’t seem like it would hold up. I like the aesthetic so much and if I got it on sale then maybe but for now I’m trying the Lululemon command the day backpack, which is 3 L larger than the Béis the backpack & has a laptop sleeve, water bottle pockets, trolley sleeve also. It also is a canvas like material instead of a nylon so similar to Béis. I just really love the functionality of that Beis front pocket❤, can’t get over it!😅 did you find that the black zippers vs beige zippers were different in quality? How has your mini weekender held up? I also got the same club weekender dupe but also like the mini size
Newcomer here! Sent to you by my friend Annette and so glad I did! I just purchased the Mono carry-on then returned it to buy the Quince! We are aligned already! My question is what is best personal item bag? Quince has a few bags (I prefer bags w shoulder straps vs backpack), so I ordered the all-day neoprene bag but I don't love it. I ordered black so its hard to see inside (learning: buy lighter color) and also difficult to get into the bag (learning: love the AWAY EVERYWHERE bag for the open wide zip/gusset that makes getting into the pockets inside so much easier). Do you have a favorite? So nice to meet you!@@Mommyingthis
I should add ... my question primarily for international travel. And on that topic ... some bags are an inch or two larger than the stated requirements ... how much a risk is that, really?? I personally have never had a carryon personal item measured ...
My flight is in 24 hrs, can I bring a gym bag as a personal item? Can I carry a percolator coffee pot with no problem. Obviously the gym bag is flat when empty.....not sure how much stuff to "pack" into it on AA?
Thoughts on iFly luggage if you have used them? I just got their hardsided carry on from walmart and am interested in seeing reviews as there are not too many reviews that I am finding on youtube. Thank you if anyone can help! Going to florida soon and am hoping I bought a good luggage bag. This is not my first flight but it is my first hardsided piece of luggage!
From what I just saw from looking them up for the first time, They have luggage with an inside that is a pet peeve of mine. My luggage has to have closed organization or compression on both sides. I’m sure it will be fine for at least a trip or two.
I’m flying air Canada internationally and concerned that my bento bag as a personal item is too wide: 8” versus 6”. In considering options, can you video a smaller compliant bag and packing such a bag for international travel? I’m carrying meds and have some decisions to make. Would appreciate input on making choices and what bags might be a safer choice. I’ve already decided on wearing a travel vest with inside pockets for phone, passport, thin wallet.
I’ve heard that air Canada isn’t stingy about personal items, just carry on’s. I don’t have the experience myself, just hearing from you guys and from the gate agents when I do the videos of what fits. Safest bet is always a backpack.
It all depends on your airline and the fare you bought. Should say in your confirmation email, or on the website of the airline. They are all different
What you pack in your personal item is up to you. I usually have plane essentials and my liquids bag and anything important. And yes, the liquids have to be 100ml or less, in 1 quart size clear bag
@@ItsTheKellys yes I’m traveling for my first time and I can bring a carry on and a personal item, I was just concerned because if I pay extra for a checked bag can I bring all 3 bags or is it just a personal and a checked bag if I pay for a checked bag?
Hi I was wondering if you had flown in Japan Airline International yet...if Yes, I was wondering if you can fit the Beis Mini Weekender underneath the seat. I am so confused with the measurements. Thank you.
A backpack would be the carry on and your ONE smaller item would be the personal item. I would recommend a small purse that you can put in your tote :)
@@ItsTheKellys another stupid question cause I'm trying to utilize what I already have in the house. Can I bring two backpacks? a big backpack as a carry on and smaller backpack as a personal item? I'll be flying united airlines. Thank you.
Did you do a video on the purse hack? I was thinking of trying to bring a small crossbody bag with my phone and wallet. And my personal item for everything else.
For economy: customers are permitted one piece of carry-on baggage, either a handbag or laptop bag, that may not exceed 55 x 38 x 20cm and must weigh no more than 7kg
From what I am understanding (not from experience) is that you are allowed one piece of luggage for inside the cabin. And yes, I would put my laptop in the bag..
@@minahilnasir3410 that’s what I’m reading but I’m not really sure. I would check in the email confirmation when you bought your ticket, it might say in there.
Hello, thank you for the helpful video. What if my personal bag is off by one inch? Like it needs to be 18x14x8. But mine is 19x11.5x7. Would that be fine? It's American Airlines
You struck a new fear in me. I am moving overseas and i will inevitably need checked bags. I can not fantom leaving my small book collection behind or losing them at the airport.
Put an AirTag in the checked luggage. And honestly, at least you’re moving there, so if it takes longer than usual to arrive, it’s not a 3 day trip, it’s much longer ;)
I'm flying with Malaysia airlines soon and I'm super confused with the personal item. It says you can add one of these items :brief case, handbag, notebook, laptop computer bag or small computer bag. I was planning on bringing a backpack as a personal item but I don't think I can. Trying to decide whether to use the backpack as a carry on or a small suitcase haha
Not all airlines are equal when it comes to their allowance with personal item sizes. It sounds like they are pretty strict, and upon googling, it looks like your carry on bag and your personal item have to be under 7kg or 15 lbs TOTAL. I don't believe I've flown them before, but they may weigh your items and/or force you to check if your total weight is oversize :-/ I hate airlines like this.
If my lumesner bag is like a back back can that be considered as my personal item ? I know I can get a plastic bag from airport store and carry that as well
It all depends on the sizes that the airlines require. Most personal item sizes are under 16” tall. Some backpacks are way too big, and some are just fine. Not all airlines let you bring a shopping bag on with your personal item and carry on. I’ve had a friend be required to shove her shopping bag into one of her bags before.
Hi! I will be flying International to Japan. I am confused as to whether I can take a large purse as PERSONAL, and a carry-on for overhead. I am seeing that sometimes your carry-on cannot be put overhead because there is no room. What happens to it? Thank you so much for your expertise!!!
It depends on the airline! They usually don’t weigh it, but some stingy airlines it can be 7kg for BOTH bags total. (Like my Jetstar flight coming up in a few days)
I actually have a question/dilemma/ i'm already gonna share too much lol I'm from the Philippines and me and my partner always fly Cebu Pacific (local airline) to Taiwan always in December. We wanted to try just bringing one carry on and just have 2 personal bags with laptops each (because we have to work while on vacation) and we wanted to try moving from Taipei to Yilan to Taichung and so on so we wanted just to pack "light". We have a hard time packing because the carry on bag is suppose to weigh just 7kg with your own personal bag. And it's stricter when we're going home from Taiwan because they really weigh the carry on bag and the personal bag if it looks too big. We tend to buy souvenirs also. We always check our bag just to avoid the hassle but we really wanted to try packing light also to save a little more money. I wanted to ask what you think we should do to achieve packing light and not checking our bag anymore? We will try to use like north face backpacks as personal bags (i cant access beis products from here which is so sad) w/ laptop inserts and then just one regular carry on. Please help us 😊
Hi! Sorry for the delayed response- my Wi-Fi wasn’t great in Tahiti. The key to 7kg luggage (which is so crazy to me!) is having the lightest carry on possible. The lightest one on the market is 3.9 lbs from July (the lite) and to simply pack as light as possible. I have only been weighed once through my 8 years of international travel, and I will have a lot of it coming up. Seems so impossible, I’m nervous myself
at that point might as well just uses carry on with a backpack it's more space for things like clothes and small items while you can use backpacks for sneakers theres bads specifically for that and laptops too
Hi I just received my Beis luggage and they are pretty heavy - would u have recommended Beis carryon for a 75 yr old woman- I’ve emailed them 3 times and ask them to email me my invoice. TO NO AVAIL ! Can’t find any phone number
Hi Denise, I’m sorry that you feel that it’s too heavy. It’s just over 8 pounds, and that’s right in the middle for the average weight for a carry on. (Monos is 7, and level 8 is 10) but depending on how much it is packed, it can definitely weigh over 25 pounds, especially if expanded. I hear Beis hasn’t been great with customer service lately since their Black Friday meltdown… I do know a lot of people have gotten through on Instagram with DMs.

If I only had to have combo, it would be July or level8 with Beis backpack (regular not expandable) Which is what I’m doing now.
Update: I don’t think my Beis backpack is doing that hot. Zippers are being wonky
@@ItsTheKellysthanks for the update! I love the backpack but I used it pretty heavily packed and it didn’t seem like it would hold up. Then I saw so much zipper issue reviews and returned it because I was too scared.
I would think a coffee maker could be ok? I’m not sure tbh. When it comes to the gym bag, it has to be under 18 x 14 x 8 When filled
So me I have plans to travel to singapore. My question is, can I carry on my duffle bag? , and how many pounds for carry on like mine.
It all depends on your airline and the fare you bought. Should say in your confirmation email, or on the website of the airline. They are all different
@@ItsTheKellys thank you so much for Info.
You the best!!
What can actually go in a personal bag like liquids... And everything does the liquids yu bring apply to the 1 quart size bag rule
What you pack in your personal item is up to you. I usually have plane essentials and my liquids bag and anything important. And yes, the liquids have to be 100ml or less, in 1 quart size clear bag
the best explanation ever! thank you.
You’re welcome 🥰
If I pay for a checked bag, can I also bring my carry on and personal item with economy ?
A personal item is always included. A carry on- it depends on the airline!
@@ItsTheKellys yes I’m traveling for my first time and I can bring a carry on and a personal item, I was just concerned because if I pay extra for a checked bag can I bring all 3 bags or is it just a personal and a checked bag if I pay for a checked bag?
Thanks for sharing. I was looking for such videos 💕
We are so happy to help Fatima!
Thank you answered my question.
Hi I was wondering if you had flown in Japan Airline International yet...if Yes, I was wondering if you can fit the Beis Mini Weekender underneath the seat. I am so confused with the measurements. Thank you.
I have not, but the Beis mini weekender is usually too large for international airlines.
Were you confused with the measurements because of inches vs centimeters !? Lol. I wonder . I am Japanese living in the States .💜🥁🐉🎤🎶✈️💞
What's your favorite piece of luggage to take on a trip? Please share it below! I can't wait to hear!
This is helpful! Ive never traveled before.. Do we have to pay for checked bags? Or are they included in the flight tickets for international flights?
It all depends on the airline!
Do you think I can use the BEIS weekender bag (not mini version) as a personal item for EVA airlines?
No, it’s kind of like a large duffel. I had a backpack with that airline
Can I bring my small roll on suitcase and a large Marc Jacob tote bag?
It depends on the airline and what type of ticket you have but generally yes
I’m flying with southwest can I do a backpack as a personal item and get a small suitcase as a carry on?!
Yes
So if you have a backpack and bring a tote or purse is that considered 1 carry on and 1 personal or 2 personal?
A backpack would be the carry on and your ONE smaller item would be the personal item. I would recommend a small purse that you can put in your tote :)
@@ItsTheKellys another stupid question cause I'm trying to utilize what I already have in the house. Can I bring two backpacks? a big backpack as a carry on and smaller backpack as a personal item? I'll be flying united airlines. Thank you.
@@xuanle7242 you sure can, it might just be heavy on your body :) when I do that, I have one on my back and one on my front!
Did you do a video on the purse hack? I was thinking of trying to bring a small crossbody bag with my phone and wallet. And my personal item for everything else.
I don’t believe I have. I’ll have to add it to the list!
Hi 👋🏻 we should carry our toiletries/liquid items in personal item bag or in carry on ?
Liquids should always be in your personal item, for when TSA makes you take them out. Other toiletries can go in your carry on, if you separate them
Does a laptop in computer bag count as the personal item?
Yes, I always suggest getting a backpack with a laptop compartment
Is laptop bag considered as personal item bag in Emirates airline
For economy: customers are permitted one piece of carry-on baggage, either a handbag or laptop bag, that may not exceed 55 x 38 x 20cm and must weigh no more than 7kg
@@ItsTheKellys can we take personal Item bag other than hand carry in Emirates economy class
And we should put laptop in hand carry I'm I right
From what I am understanding (not from experience) is that you are allowed one piece of luggage for inside the cabin. And yes, I would put my laptop in the bag..
@@ItsTheKellys so personal item bag is not allowed
@@minahilnasir3410 that’s what I’m reading but I’m not really sure. I would check in the email confirmation when you bought your ticket, it might say in there.
Is it okay to bring one more sling bag?
Hello, thank you for the helpful video. What if my personal bag is off by one inch? Like it needs to be 18x14x8. But mine is 19x11.5x7. Would that be fine? It's American Airlines
I think you could be fine on American. I don’t think they check very often.
I’m in the same predicament, my personal bag is 1.5 inches too wide so now I’m debating whether to risk it or not
Is the Beis mini weekender a personal item?
On some airlines, yes. I put it to the test here:

Thank you
I love you so good and you answer my question bless in Christ Jesus amen
You struck a new fear in me. I am moving overseas and i will inevitably need checked bags. I can not fantom leaving my small book collection behind or losing them at the airport.
Put an AirTag in the checked luggage. And honestly, at least you’re moving there, so if it takes longer than usual to arrive, it’s not a 3 day trip, it’s much longer ;)
@@ItsTheKellys Thank you for the idea !
I don't believe I've flown them before, but they may weigh your items and/or force you to check if your total weight is oversize :-/ I hate airlines like this.
hi just want to ask something if can i do 2 personal items bag a small bucket bag and one duffle bag? thannk you
You can but one of them will count as a carry on bag.
So I can't bring a carryon, a bookbag as a personal item and also wear a fanny pack?
Once you’ve boarded you can, but either hide your fanny pack under your clothes for boarding, or put it in your book bag.
Southwest told us we get 2 carry on bags and 1 checked luggage each. Would my purse count as 1 carry on?
Yes it probably means you get a carry on and a personal item. I always pack my purse while I travel, in my suitcase, so it doesn’t count as a bag!
Hi! I will be flying International to Japan. I am confused as to whether I can take a large purse as PERSONAL, and a carry-on for overhead. I am seeing that sometimes your carry-on cannot be put overhead because there is no room. What happens to it? Thank you so much for your expertise!!!
If there is no room in the overhead, they will gate check it and you will be on the plane with your personal item.
@@ItsTheKellys Thank you so much!
The biggest thank you for your video ! It helped me tremendously !
Glad it helped! You’re welcome ☺️
Can I put my bluetooth speaker and my extra watch in my personal hand bag?
Yes
Is the beis 22 14 9 with the wheels ?
It’s a tad bigger than that, like 22.5 x 15 x 9.5
Is there weight limit on my personal item ? I know carry on is 7kg
It depends on the airline! They usually don’t weigh it, but some stingy airlines it can be 7kg for BOTH bags total. (Like my Jetstar flight coming up in a few days)
@@ItsTheKellys thank you .. I'm flying delta in Detroit to san Francisco... then China airline from san Francisco to Taipei and Taipei to MNL
Thankyou so much you explained this very well
You’re welcome!
What about a small duffle bag? I messed up and don’t get any carry on bag :(
It depends on the size of the duffel and what the airline allows :)
May the Lord bless you! Your videos are sooo helpful for me a first time traveler!
I'm so glad! I’m trying to think of more things that first time travelers need help with. If you can think of anything, please let me know
What are the rules for liquids on personal item?
3.4 ounce containers (or 100 ml) in a 1 quart clear bag :)
Should the personal item bag n carryon bag together weigh 7kg?
Depends on the airline, but in my experience I’ve never been weighed in all 95 countries, even if they say they will.
I actually have a question/dilemma/ i'm already gonna share too much lol
I'm from the Philippines and me and my partner always fly Cebu Pacific (local airline) to Taiwan always in December.
Could I bring 2 personal items? Two backpacks
One would have to be considered a carry on.
at that point might as well just uses carry on with a backpack it's more space for things like clothes and small items while you can use backpacks for sneakers theres bads specifically for that and laptops too
Hi I just received my Beis luggage and they are pretty heavy - would u have recommended Beis carryon for a 75 yr old woman- I’ve emailed them 3 times and ask them to email me my invoice.
@@ItsTheKellys I really like that hook but I don’t think I could lift it up into luggage bin- don’t get old
@@ItsTheKellys what is DM
