Beis Luggage Sizer Challenge: Personal item or Carry on?

- !! DISCLAIMER !! just because the bag fits in a sizer in this video, doesn't always mean it will be passed at the gate. Airlines have gotten more strict this year and their gate agents have the final say. Some of the airlines (Frontier and Air Canada especially ) have been making headlines lately and may be more strict.
This video answers a question we were getting A LOT during our luggage review videos... What bags fit in what airline sizers? A lot of you had very specific questions, so we are now giving you very specific answers... and then some!

We took them to our home airport to test them in 9 different airline's luggage sizers. Personal item or carry on? Lets find out!

This was great! I'm looking for a 2-wheeled under-seater and the conflicting info is frustrating. I'd love to see you do this with a couple of those. I'm of a certain age :( and need the wheels but also not have to lift into the overhead. Thanks!!
Would you use this in addition to a wheeled luggage? Or by itself? I’d like to help you find something! If you wanted a smaller personal item in addition to carry on luggage, they have straps that can attach it to your carry on luggage, for easier carrying within the airport.
@@ItsTheKellys Well, as a recovering extreme over-packer, my goal is to be able to pack for at least a long weekend in just the under-seater (for convenience but also to not have to stress about overhead space). I've managed to work my way down to carry-on only for most trips - a Motherload 21 or Delsey 21 hardside❤. I have a trip in Sept on Jet Blue, so this is as good a time as any to go cold turkey. I've look at dozens of videos & bags; the closest to 17x13x8 are: High Sierra Endeavor & London Fog Yorkshire or Newcastle. Probably TMI 😆

For anyone trying to use the Beis mini weekender as a personal bag on budget airlines, my trick is to remove the bottom pocket that you can detach. It usually ALLOWS works for personal then. Agreed, I don't understand people who check in bags. ESPECIALLY these days. Great video.

Thank you! I am flying Delta soon and have (and love) a beis mini weekender. I haven't flown with the bottom on because I am worried about it not fitting under the seats, even though I have been on several planes and know that it would fit. knowing that it works at all the other airlines makes me confident it will work for them as well!

You answered everything I kept searching for on google and had no success. Dimensions are confusing because I freaked out my carry on luggage wouldn’t be allowed on American Airlines because of Beis Carry On dimensions, thanks to you it fits and I didn’t waste my money. 😂❤

You two outdid yourselves! SO MANY airlines! I love my Motherlode jr. backpack, but man, that thing has given me the most issues fitting under aisle seats, especially. You are spot on when you mentioned the difference it makes with how full it is. I usually pack mine to the fullest! Whoever asked you to make this video, THANK YOU! Great idea!
It was pretty fun to make, but yes my eBags always goes overhead! Of course I’m 5’10 so I need all the leg room I can get!
I will be flying with spirit and frontier- have you ever used the mother lode jr as your personal item ? I don’t plan on using the expander portion .
@@rebeccabanuelos6190 the junior is *technically* 1.5 inches too tall and 1 inch too deep for spirit and frontier’s personal items. If it wasn’t packed to capacity, I think you could get away with it, because it is squishable into a bin…
Have I tried? No. However, they are so weird and strict, I wouldn’t want you to have to pay a fee at the gate!
Susan, when you take your JR- is that your free personal item your stuffing under the seats- like for spirit or frontier?
Also when you say you stuff it full- is that expanded or not expanded? And if it’s full and expanded- is that why you struggle to fit it under the seats or is that just non expanded but full?
I’m asking since I leave next month on spirit and I’m going to use my new JR for peeps and item under the seat. I don’t want to over pack it so that it fails the free personally item but also want to maximize its space. So if your uncompressed and stuffed yet still fitting it under the seat then I’m super impressed!!! That’s like 45g when expanded I believe I’ve read. It’s like 40L when non expanded aka compressed.
@@ashleehoward47 I don't expand it, but just pack it full. The issue with fitting it under seats happens when I'm in an aisle seat (I swear there's less room under those!). Also when there's so little leg room that even getting it between my seat and the seatback in front of me is difficult, let alone getting it from there to underneath the seat. I hope that makes sense! I've never flown Spirit, so I can't speak to the space in their planes.

This was SO HELPFUL! I have to fly Air Canada a lot and their sizing is on the small size compared to other airlines. There's nothing worse than getting to the airport to find out your carry on is too big!

Cool experiment, I'm sure some of the people at the airport thought you were crazy. As far as checking a bag - we are scuba divers. We would pack one large suitcase with gear like BCs, fins, wetsuits. A medium sized bag with the rest of the gear that didn't fit and clothes. Our carry ons were for hubby's underwater video camera and equipment for him. Our regulators, dive computers and my camera and underwater housing and masks for me. Then his personal item was his laptop so he could work and download pictures and video. My personal item would carry all the snacks, passports, extra sets of bi-focal lenses for my mask and other things one needs. I would scatter a change of clothes and one bathing suit each amongst our carry ons in case the checked luggage got delayed (which happened more than once). Since we had our regs and dive computers with us we could make due with rental equipment until ours arrived. We preferred to have our own equipment instead of relying on rentals that you don't know if or when it's been serviced.
Yes that’s so much to bring, I totally understand when people need to check bags for special fun things. I’ve always wanted to learn to dive, but have always been nervous about having to bring all of that with me! Haha
seriously thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this. I just bought the beis carry-on luggage and am flying Delta first class in 2 weeks with my dog inside the sleepypod air & Beis carry-on. Beis carry-on dimensions exceed Delta carry-on dimensions so I was quite worried about this but you re-assured me it would fit.
You’re welcome! I’ve used mine on delta a lot. The only time that I don’t fly with it is international, because some times it’s *actually* Air France or KLM, a delta partner, and they are more strict
anybody has tried Aeromexico with the beis carry on? I'm annoyed its like 3 cm too big but I believe its delta partner -.-

I was using a smaller carry-on roller for NY as of 2 weeks ago, and bought a Beis carry-on roller simply cause I want a bit more packing space for the winter when I’m back in NY 😂 I watched this video to determine it’ll be fine for Air Canada as I’m based in Vancouver. I have a soft sided carry-on roller the exact same size as Beis, but when packed to the max…. we get asked to check it in. The Beis should make it visually less bulky 😅
There might always be times that they ask you to check, whether there is no space, or whatever… even if it fits. Always a bummer!

Duffels would probably just depend on how full they are, since they could be squishy if not filled to capacity! I think duffels are safer sometimes!

Thank you for watching! Lately, Air Canada has been much more strict with their carry on items. I would use the Beis carryon at your own risk because there have been reports of them making people check the bag.

People have been uploading tik toks flying frontier where they check each person INDIVIDUALLY to make sure the bag fits in their sizer (without pushing it down) or else you have to pay to check it in
Yes, I’ve heard frontier is horribly strict. They weren’t when I flew them, but it’s good to play by the rules!

Let me know! It’s not available to purchase anymore and I don’t own it. I think the mother lodes can fit so much that they can be hard to stuff under a seat sometimes if they are packed fully

I was so happy to find their sizer, but so bummed about that personal item. I know I’ve flown them randomly and don’t remember what I used. I think I was double backpacked.
No need to be nervous. Just comply with their requirements. It’s all explained on their website so there’s no need to guess. That’s the only airline I’ve flown that also weighed my carryon. It’s good for you to figure this one out and learn what to bring. Then it will be easier for you to go to Europe or Asia as all their airlines have smaller requirements that USA. Have a great trip.

Yes, but I still won’t do it :) it’s because the weight limit is 40 but most people think it’s 50 and they can charge overage fees!

Awesome. I just came back from a 9 day trip & was the first time I used a carry on for such a long trip. I have an IT brand bag & wanted to invest in something better so I can do carry on only more often. I still had trouble overpacking lol I used the travel compression bags to help with that. @@cfloreess you’ll be fine. Delta is so easy. BUT if you codeshare Air France or KLM you will have to check. That’s happened to me on the way back from Paris or Amsterdam
