      Let me tell you about Titans who can wipe our an entire continent. Great and powerful ancient warriors locked on mighty dreadnoughts, demi-gods inside the best exo-armours mankind ever know, fighting demons and xenos by equal. There are wars far worse and terrible on it own horrour where mankind have to deploy the most powerful weapons, in our eternal war, the Adeptus Astartes have the finest armoury.

      A pretty good rule-of-thumb is that exoskeletons (for which we're really only considering powered exoskeletons, and of which powered armor is a subclass) are worn, while mecha are ridden/piloted.
      For example, something like the Mjolnir armor from Halo (conspicuously absent from the list/ranking, though shown in the video), the Iron Man armor, the Knight Sabers' hardsuits from Bubblegum Crisis, the E-Frames from ExoSquad, the Elemental suits from BattleTech, and the Guyver armor (for a biomehanical/techno-organic variation) would be obvious examples of (powered) exoskeletons (and, all of those happen to be powered armor, as well).
      Unarmored (powered) exoskeletons like the Power Loader from Aliens, or the real-world "Hybrid Assisted Limb" (HAL) unit developed by the Japanese company Cyberdyne, are likewise worn by their operators, fitting around their bodies.
      By contrast, "mechs" (for want of a better term, as (powered) exosleletons/powered armor technically fall under the umbrella of "mecha") are not worn, but are operated from a cockpit or similar structure.
      Mechs have a wide size range, from being only a handful of meters in height (the AMP units from avatar are only four meters (~13 feet) tall, and the biggest Gears from Heavy Gear are just under six meters (~20 feet) tall) to the size of an office building (an average BattleMech from BattleTech is around 12 meters (~40 feet) tall and an average mid/late-UC Mobile Suit is around 18 meters (~60 feet) tall) to quite large (the Jaegers are generally on the order of 75 to 90 meters (~250 to 300 feet) tall) to truly colossal (Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is several galactic diameters in height).
      Even mechs that use motion-capture/motion-mimicking as their control system (as with the Mobile Trace System from Mobile Fighter G-Gundam, or the Pons System from Pacific Rim) are not actually exoskeletons, as the operator is still piloting the unit (often, while themselves wearing some form of body armor, which may or may not include a powered exoskeleton) from a cockpit area within the mech (e.g. the conn-pod in the head or chest of a Jaeger, or the optionally-sealed cockpit of the AMP units) rather than wearing the unit itself.

    Great vid, but as a Pacific Rim nerd I must clarify: nuclear reactors were not the problem. The reason the pilots got nosebleeds is because in the earliest jaegers, there was only one pilot. The mental stress of operating a mecha the size of a city block gave them nosebleeds, so a twin pilot system was introduced, where the two pilots would 'drift' to allow them into each others minds, thus taking off the stress as each pilot would only control half the jaeger, but as they were mentally linked they could each perform the exact same actions

    • @krr_jr66
      @krr_jr66 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the reason why they have nosebleeds is because most of the early jaegers had low quality shielding against radiation and some suits like Koyoty Tango also had a radiation leak due to the damage sustained from battle (I think they told us somewhere in the flim but I can’t remember haha). Also I think that Allan here is talking about radiation poisoning (cause he’s showing Stacker here) and not the brain damage scene.

    • @russelllim4891
      @russelllim4891 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Its both, early jaegers had to be made quickly to fight against kaiju so they had to skimp out on the radiation protection for the pilots and the making of the jaegers had test drives that resulted in pilots that tried to control by themselves ended up in critical condition so they had to make it run on 2 pilots ( Stacker Pentecost really got unlucky, being a early gen jaeger pilot *and* losing his partner while fighting really fucked him up)

    As a veteran and history buff, the idea that you can't comment historically on the events of any major world wars or any war in the past unless you've been there is incredulous. The only way to make sure something bad, tragic, awful, or sucky is to make sure that never happens again. Commenting on historical accuracy in films is something that should be done more routinely so that the hells that many of my fellow veterans and civilians endured will never be forgotten. You guys always do a great job to comment on films and portray the actual facts as they are and not many people do that. If an audience member can't handle that, who needs them? Won't stop me from watching you guys.

      @steppenwolf That's just a natural human thing though. Ever since the birth of humanity, people have instinctively wanted and even needed power for survival. In order to change that, we have to change as humans, not get rid of those people. Until THAT happens, we have to try and keep people from becoming like that.

    • @dashiellgillingham4579
      @dashiellgillingham4579 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Stormflayer BUT that will never happen unless we agree to stop doing it. Humans get better at a thing the more often we do it, and worse at a thing the less we do it. The better we get at staying out of wars, the less wars there will be, until there are none.

The term Exo-Suit is most akin to what you showed towards the end with the GI Joe, Iron Man, and Batman armored units. As for the Jaeger, it is a full on large mecha, not an exo-suit, just because they use motion reading waldos does not mean it is an exo-suit.

      OKAY: POWERED ARMOR AND EXOSKELETONS ARE DIFFERENT THINGS.
      An exoskeleton is a device over the body that supports it’s weight but is a completely separate thing. Our modern technology is all under this label.
      Powered armor is integrated into the body via the nervous system. This is stuff like Astartes MVIII, Mobile Infantry Suits, and Starcraft’s Terran Combat Armor.
      THEY ARE SEPARATE. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS.
      -le students’ rant is over-
      Honestly, at this point people and authors are so confused about the distinction that it doesn’t matter. Fallout’s ‘Powered Armor’ is an armored exoskeleton, but it’s named power armor, so it’s power armor.

      His explanation is weak at best, Jagers have cockpits and are piloted. They are vehicles designed for combat not suits. Logically any suit with complete armor shouldn't even be here since by definition exoskeletons do not offer complete protection as skeletal structures are reinforcing, protection to major organs and structural support. The likes of the GIJoe suits, spartan armors and Ironman armors would fall under powered armor.
      This list only has about 3-4 actual exoskeletons which is a joke of an attempt although these clickbait top 10 videos usually go down the same lazy path of less taught = more videos = more views.

    • @jmulchrone1
      @jmulchrone1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Jell1y Gamer Technically speaking the correct german spelling would contain an umlaut over the a and only contains one "e" (Jäger) My spelling is closer to correct than your american bastardisation of the word.
      The fact that they are called pilots proves that the Jäger is not an exoskeleton that is an extension of the wearer being worn but a vehicle that is driven even if it's done so by neural interface. Also the pilot suits are not exoskeletons either, their just jumpsuits that served no purpose besides he clearly refers to the Jäger mech as a exoskeleton not the pilot's jumpsuits.

    0:32 Perturabo is much more than just 'in an exo skeleton suit'. He is, or was, the Primarch of the Iron Warriors Chapter of Space Marines. The gene-father, therefore the purest form which is distilled into a lesser vessel.
    He wouldn't need the armour now, he's a Daemon Prince. Does anyone know if he has Obliterator properties? If so I'd need to get him to the table asap.
    Also, if you count a Jaeger because the pilot is connected to it, then Imperator Titans count as well.

    I am surprised a Phase 3 Dark Trooper suit from Star Wars, the Hrunting/Yggdrasil Mk. 1 suit from Halo (that suit that looked like a large MJOLNIR suit from one of the Halo anime episodes, Ghost, I think), the Hrunting/Yggdrasil Mk. 2 from Halo (that giant walker that can be seen in the middle of a Halo 4 map, Adrift, inside the large central chamber; it appears to be undergoing repairs or finishing up construction,as there is no missing components easily observed), or a Cyclops from Halo weren’t put on the list. I mean, the Cyclops is basically one of the Alien Cargo Loaders except bigger, can be more heavily armed, has actual armor and not just metal structural supports, and are fully enclosed. I think they can function in a vacuum as well. Cyclops is like what a combination between the Avatar Marine walker and Ripley’s Cargo Loader, and it looks like it too, I think. It does make sense, as it was originally designed to be a light cargo loader, not for anything to heavy.

    If you were alive during WWI - and you were drafted - you'd be in the trenches with everyone else or in jail or in hiding. The guys who were in the trenches were probably not any less frightened of what they were doing than you are - they just did it anyway.
    Did you skip the ones from Halo? I know it's a game but there are Halo movies I've seen on the internet somewhere.
    Another one would be the Powered Armor from the Book Starship Troopers - which is supposed to be in the upcoming movie. I guess they figured if Tom Cruise could do it for Edge of Tomorrow than they could do it too.

    There is actually a reason for the matrix APU's to not have any pilot protection. Canonically, it was found during the initial war against the AI, that all the protection only made the pilots suffer a lot more (as you can see in the Animatrix series where one poor pilot is ripped out of his suit, leaving his limbs behind).

      technically 40k titans almost never featured in video games, however they appeared in fan-made animated movies, they appear in lore books, and the smaller ones had figurines for the 40k "epic" tabletop game, thanks to it's tiny scale
      so it's not a video game example, and if you really try hard you can say it's in movies, but otherwise it's books and tabletop games

    So many people talking about exoskeletons and powered armors from different media, but I'm yet to see a mention of the Mobile Infantry suits from the Starship Troopers book.
    Starship Troopers is one of the first books that popularized powered armor and it was probably one of the most realistic portrayals of possible tactics and uses of such a weapon.
    The Mobile Infantry are the main army branch in the Terran Federation, they do not require tank or artillery support because they carry more than enough firepower.
    Each soldier has twin linked mortars, flame throwers, auto-cannons, rockets and possibly tactical nukes.
    Also they all have jump jets, which increase their mobility by orders of magnitude. Allowing a soldier to easily jump over buildings or traverse difficult terrain.
    Couple that with well trained soldiers and a squad of 8 mobile infantry is equivalent to several companies of a modern army.
    Basically the mobile infantry armor is such a force multiplier, that 8 men can easily take on a thousand.
    However, their biggest strength is also their biggest weakness.
    You cannot train just anyone to be in the mobile infantry, in fact out of every 1000 volunteers (not conscripts, people who actually want to be there) only about 90 make it through basic training.
    That said, if necessary the federation could create auxiliary army units for defense, thus freeing up the mobile infantry for offense. The auxiliary core would not need to have as harsh requirements as the MI. A man required to hold a position until reinforcements or extraction, does not need to be as multi-skilled as one required to do much, much more.
    So they'd only need to create a regular army on top of their already existing elites. Because the MI is closer to modern day special forces than to regular army personnel. (It's just that in the case of the Terran Federation the whole army is special forces.)
