This video brings so much peace of mind to a rather scary situation. It's relieving to see that my swelling hand & fingers are likely not a sign of something going terribly wrong!!! Thank you so much for the info, and I look forward to trying out the solutions you suggested.
Watch ASAP. I am 3 months after a major hand surgery. My hand has limited movement and swelling. I can only wonder were I would be today if I had started sooner. It's not that I didn't move my fingers it's more like I could have been smarter in my exercise. All of her videos provide value. After watching several I discovered I was doing my hand exercise wrong. Working smart and hard is better than working wrong and hard. 😊 Good luck to everyone. I took my hand for granted. Now I am trying to get it back.
THANK YOU!!! So glad I finally googled swollen fingers and broken elbow. Neither the ortho doc nor the primary care NP gave any tips for dealing with the swelling -- they both blamed the sling and suggested I ease up on using it a bit. Not much help. Can't tell you how happy I am to see your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Very helpful, relieved my worry and showed me what to do! I broke elbow one week ago and am waiting for surgery and was concerned about all the swellling.
i just dislocated my elbow a week ago currently in a on and off brace they took the temporary cast off so this is really helpful because it’s now on me to try to get my movement back and ofc losing the swelling
I only found you yesterday, wish I had found you weeks ago? I broke my elbow 6 weeks ago, full arm cast comes off tomorrow. I have only been following a couple of your videos for two days and what a difference 😊 , I can now bend my fingers and get my thumb to touch my little finger, before that I could not bend any of fingers almost at all, as you say felt like concrete, Thank you sooo much. ❤
broken elbow. radial ball replaced, rod and pins surgery 2 weeks ago. hand is swollen, can't bend fingers. you didn't mention using ice. can I still apply ice packs or is that bad
Thanks very much it’s great to see there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Broke my elbow and going through all these issues. Cast came off 2 weeks ago physical Therapy starts in 2 days I am in a rush to start moving my arm, but the swelling in my hand just gets in the way big time.
As a recent severe elbow injury person that Splint/Cast/Brace looks so much more comfortable than the ones I had!!! ( I slept elevated at night and also did something called a Six Pack of hand exercises, helped a lot)
Thank you so much. My 88yr old mom dislocated her elbow two weeks ago and her fingers are swollen. The cast was changed today but they are still swollen. Im going to let her do some of tge exercises you recommended and if tgey dont work Im going to take her back to the hospital.❤
I got a bone bruise injury in my right arm close to 2 months ago from a fall at the local grocery store and the only way I prevented from having swollen fingers was to use both the elastic bandage/gauze a little more loosely than usual instead of tightening it to help with/the blood flow and not getting purple ones when you lose circulation
Very helpful. Great video. I had a compound fracture/dislocation that required surgery for internal fixation and an external fixation device installed. Now 6 months post injury, surgeon is saying I need to have the internal hardware removed as well as my ulna styloid that is giving me discomfort. In general, what limitations happen when the ulna styloid is removed?
That's what my physiotherapist in the hospital told me to do (I broke my elbow and had a surgery this week) but I find myself really bad time doing this... and she told me that I have to do so every few hours, which I don't... so I find your videos and channel as a motivation! yet, it is still so hard for me... even mentally.... Please, can you tell me why is this so important? an you tell me words of motivation?
Thank you, Michelle. I am about 10 days out from brace removal after a broken wrist. My doctor cheerfully changed my cast to the brace and told me take it off in 3 or 4 weeks and I didn’t need to come back in. I also didn’t routinely need PT. I tell you that only to explain I’m kind of on my own and you’ve been a big big help. My question is, my hand and fingers still swell up constantly. Is this normal? They loosen up if I use/ move them but soon are swollen and stiff again.
If someone were to break four fingers in the same hand, what would the treatment be? How would the cast be applied? Or would the hand just be immobilised? What would the treatment be like and how would it be done?
Broke my olecranon and had hardware installed. For swelling of the hand I tried to keep my arm elevated at all times with pillows and I used my squishy stress toy a lot. It was soft and that was good since I had little strength and sometimes I put it in the fridge so it was like squishy ice pack. It gave my fingers the movement needed for like 10 days until the swelling went down and I could've used my arm a bit.
Thanks for this info. What if you've been told to wear a sling 24/7. How can you move shoulder around ? Had elbow dislocation and fracture with surgery ( got a screw). Doctor said wear sling all the time come back in two weeks.
Thank you! Great info. Broke my wrist x2 wks ago and now in a wrist brace. My fingers randomly swell up and this video has reassured me to do things right and will continue to move my fingers and elevate. The massage on each finger is good too. Thanks again! I'm from Australia 😊
Thanks for your video. Im in the UK and hardly any advice on this subject. Im 10 weeks post humerus fracture, brace removed 2 weeks ago. Im using my hand and arm much more but the swelling is bad every day. My question is this - why am i getting this swelling at all, when the bone is 95%healed and how much longer have i got to suffer this.? Its very depressing. With regards to using ice, be VERY CAREFUL people. I left mine on for too long and now still dealing with the effects of ice burn 3 weeks later.! 😢
Thank you so much for your videos I tripped and broke my arm when I was running I am leaving the hospital today. I was wondering if I ask where did you get your arm cast or brace? I would like to order because I live in Greece they wrapped it with an old-school way. I would like to have something more comfortable like yours if you could get back with me I really appreciate it. Thank you.
@edwardcordell Sorry you can't purchase this long arm cast. It is a custom Delta Cast that I actually made. A hand therapist that uses Delta Casting material can make one for you.
Watched one of your videos, Great content. Wanted to ask about my finger. Jammed it when trying to catch a soccer ball about 5 years ago. It didn't break or dislocate and healed fairly quickly after typical symptoms. However after 5 or so years it still gets sore and feels tender. It also clicks when you flex it while putting pressure on the sides of it. Any advice? Thanks you!
I am 11 weeks post fractured humerus. No longer in a sling. Doing PT. Fingers of affected arm are still swollen and painful. I’ve been icing. Doing hand exercises. I’m concerned that this is still swollen. Ortho doc said it just takes time. Is this normal?
I am waiting to have surgery on my displaced fractured elbow. Currently it is splinted. Is it still safe to do exercises before surgery? I have had 2 broken wrists on the same arm so I am already doing as much as I can minus holding anything in that hand. Can I safely use a squishy ball?
Fab videos. The skin on my hand has really suffered whilst in a cast for 5 weeks. I couldn't wash it properly to protect the cast. Any tips / creams that might help it recover, as well as these exercises? Thanks
Hi,i'm an argentinian OT. I ve got a Lot of wrist fractures with stiff fingers, specialy in the Index. In they consult they reach a fist but out of they service, they loose Range. What do You think it is?
Hi fellow OT! There could be a lot of reasons. Are you giving them the same exercise program for them to do at home? Stiffness is very normal and needs to be worked on several times a day, not just in therapy.
I broke my wrist snow boarding back in january and have now been out of my cast for 5 weeks now. My fingers are swollen and my forearm is so much smaller with no muscle tone. My joints hurt a lot and am having trouble bending them. Can any help with advice?
Pls I need some help. I had dislocated my index finger about 5 months ago and wasn’t very consistent with my exercises, now the finger is kind of stiff and I can’t fully bend or straighten it. Will it get better if I make sure I’m consistent with my exercises?
I got surgery on my broken elbow 3 days ago. I'm at the point were I can lift it vertically for a while. The back of my hand got the swelling not so much my fingers.
My husband had a revision of a non union on the left elbow after an open fracture. He still has so much swelling and sensitive to touch in the hand. What else would you recommended. He already on medication and tries to do light exercise, elevating and putting a compression glove on.

You are welcome and THANK YOU for the kind words!
Thanks so much for this! My fingers hurt just as much as my fractured elbow because of the swelling! 😅

Yes, you can definitely have a yo yo affect on your fingers. The fact that it gets better if you loosen them up is a good sign!
@@VirtualHandCare thank you so much.
Just keep opening and closing your hand till the swelling go. I kept doing that for days till the swelling go

Is it ok to add heat daily to hand to help with swelling
Should i be worried about swelling in my hand 14 days after a dislocated elbow ?
I have a grade 2 ucl tear, should I wear a cast? Conservative treatment is not working. I’m tired of being in pain.

What about ice?
Both heat and ice can be helpful.
I didn’t break it just my soft tissues are hurting
