Some fun facts: - The movie was filmed in Milwaukee, my home town, and so a lot of my older relatives and their friends were all extras at County Stadium and in the background - The fancy restaurant they go to in the film is the same restaurant where my parents had one of their first dates - They used my former high school's football team locker rooms for their locker rooms
The announcer Harry Doyle is actually a real baseball announcer named Bob Uecker. You should check out the story told about him by comedians Artie Lang and Norm Macdonald on The Howard Stern show. It’s a classic. Uecker really is a National treasure.
One thing I love about this movie is how real Charlie Sheen throwing heat was, he had a real shot at going pro coming out of high school but went the acting route instead. So many great one liners as well
he was still throwing 80-82 at the time of filming. they moved the mound in 9 feet so they wouldnt need trick photography to get the speed right. the time his pitches were taking from 51 ft would be the same time that a 100 mph pitch would take from 60.
I am from Wisconsin, so I love this movie because the home stadium for the Cleveland Indians was actually County Stadium, the old home of the Milwaukee Brewers. The original test screenings for the movie did not do well. They added Bob Uecker scenes later, and viewers loved it. Ironically, Bob Uecker was and still is, to this day, the announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Dude, I saw this when it hit theaters back in '89. It was one of those RARE cinema experiences where the WHOLE AUDIENCE got involved! Yo, when they won at the end, the whole theater BLEW UP! People were jumping up and cheering and throwing popcorn everywhere! I even got wrapped up in it, and I'm not even a sports guy! Good times, man! "A League of Their Own" isn't as "wild" as "Major League", but it's sooo NICE! It's good for your heart!
Being from Cleveland and a baseball fan, this movie was in heavy rotation when I was growing up. Baseball is a sport that grows on you the more you watch it. I also believe that baseball (along with hockey) are sports that are much more fun to watch in person. I had no interest in baseball until my parents took me to my 1st Indians game when I was 14. That changed everything (though College Football and the NFL will always be my favorite sports).
@profanepersonality Bob Uecker is a national treasure. Milwaukee is actually my favorite National League team, believe it or not. One of these days, my wife and I want to make our way there to see a ballgame.
Same thing happened when I saw it in the theater . I've never seen that happen in any other movie theater. I looked over at my dad and he was wiping tears from his eyes.
I don't care if you root for Cleveland or even like baseball, if you don't get FUCKING PUMPED during that intro to the play-in game, you need to get yourself checked for a pulse.
Good one, Leo. Saw Charlie Sheen on a plane to Cleveland once. He was going to throw out the first pitch for the playoffs and sitting in economy for some reason. I was going to Cleveland to see the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Anyway, I didn't' have tix for the Indians game, but I snuck into the stadium, slipped under a gate. (This was back in the 90's and security was not what it is today).
He never played for the Brewers,He is the Brewers radio announcer. He played for thr Milwaukee Braves ,the Philadelphia Phillys,St Louis Cardinals,And Atlanta Braves
I watched this as a kid not long after Platoon. I couldn’t wrap my mind around Tom Berenger and Charlie Sheen in this movie after Platoon, took time getting used to!
The Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider changed his number to 99 in homage to Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn. You should check out some of his highlights. He was the runner-up in the NL Rookie of the Year last year. Also Charlie Sheen even tweeted about Spencer changing his number.
The late 80s and early 90s saw a lot of good sports, especially baseball movies. The Sandlot (my favourite), Rookie of the Year, Cool Runnings (about the first Jamaican Bobsled Team, lots of fun), The Mighty Ducks, The Big Green, Little Giants, Bend It Like Beckham (from 2002, but awesome), Coach Carter, White Men Can't Jump (LMFAO), The Hurricane, A League of Their Own (first women's baseball league starring Tom Hanks), and The Karate Kid (the original) are all terrific sports movies. Some of those movies are can't miss classics that should be on everyone's bucket list.
" Tin Cup ", " American Flyers ", " Bull Durham ", " Brewster's Millions ", " Sunset Park ", " Summer Rental ", " On Any Sunday ", " Endless Summer ", " Eight Men Out ", " The Best of Times ", " North Dallas Forty ", " The Longest Yard (1974) ", " Mystery, Alaska ". " North Shore " to name a few.
I said it on Patreon and I'll say it again here. I LOVE this movie. A lot of great sports movies are more serious with drama and etc. But ill always favor the ones with comedy anyday. Thanks again Leo!
There was an alternative script twist that portrayed Phelps as a mastermind that pushed them to win by reverse psychology, but they decided to keep her the antagonist. It kind of makes sense because no one wanted to play in Cleveland, so the only ones that would play inspired ball were players with no other choice. Veterans that were all stars at one point with one last good season in them, and could guide the raw young players through the season. Then there’s the Manager, a conventional Major League coach couldn’t work with the young unconventional talent like he could, and he was used to talking straight to all his players because of his long time as a minor league coach. So there’s logic to it, but it’s asking for way too much suspension of disbelief from the audience.
The second movie is good as well. Glad you enjoyed these. The Replacements with Keanu Reeves is a good comedy football movie. Worth a watch. Keep up the good work as always. Keep bringing the 🔥🔥🔥
51:20 That actually wasn’t the World Series. That was just the League Championship. In the start of the second movie, we find out they lost the World Series. The plot is trying again, with some new people, but this time, going for it all.
As someone born and raised in Cleveland, I appreciate you doing this movie reaction. Wishing you the best Leo. Hope you do more awesome things in the future. Go Tribe.
The actor playing Serrano is the guy from the All State Insurance commercials lols. I love these movies, one of my few favs for baseball movies. They sell joboo dolls at the actual Gaurdians (Indians) stadium.
“Hey Dorn don’t blame Vaughn, he didn’t know that Susan is your wife. Besides you should’ve thought about it before you cheated on her, so you have nobody to blame but yourself “
Quick list of my favorite sports movies you NEED to watch!!! Bull Durham (Kevin Costner), The Rookie (Dennis Quaid), Invincible (Mark Wahlberg), Remember the Titans (Denzel Washington), A League of Their Own (Tom Hanks), Ford vs Ferrari (Matt Damon), and Moneyball (Brad Pitt). Every single one of those is an absolute classic that should be experienced by everyone (even if you don’t like sports)!
Hey, Leo.... I'm 40 minutes in, and just thought about this: Another movie (Baseball) that you might like, is The Bad News Bears. I mean, at this point of the movie, you seem to really be enjoying it, so I thought I'd suggest it to you. It came out in 1976, and I actually saw that movie in theaters back then. I was 9 years old, and it actually made me want to play in Little League. Not that I did very well, but no one explained the rules of the game to me, either. Anyway, it's something you might enjoy, so I thought I'd recommend it to you.
I was born and raised in Milwaukee. Bob Uecker is a Milwaukee staple and legend. He used to announce all the Milwaukee Brewer baseball games. Also, the game at the end was filmed at Milwaukee County Stadium which is now Miller Park. Awesome movie and reaction.
This movie is so funny, but I think it’s underrated as a baseball movie. What you said at the end, that it makes you want to watch baseball. That’s so true. If you haven’t seen Remember the Titans or Rudy those are considered two of the greatest football movies ever made. If you want something funnier Necessary Roughness is great too.
When I realized that it was Dennis Haysbert on the Allstate insurance commercials (Cerrano), I would comment along when they would appear on the TV... "If you've been in an accident and need Allstate, I say fuck you Jobu... I do it myself." ☮❤🎶
The pitcher at the end that threw at Taylor was Al Hrobosky, “The Mad Hungarian”. He was a real MLB pitcher and he was known to throw at batters a lot. Perfect casting.
Listen. I hate baseball. I hated playing it. I hate watching it. THIS MOVIE makes me not hate it so much, and that's a freaking miracle. ;) Great reaction as always.
Now YOUR critique Of this movie I TAKE SERIOUSLY !......If this movie can keep the attention of someone who has no like for baseball tells ME its a decent movie !!!
This and A League Of Their Own are the two best baseball movies of all time, although which one is my favorite changes all the time. #3 is Bull Durham.
I grew up in a small baseball loving town in Mexico. I watched this movie an unhealthy amount of times lol. Had a huge crush on Charlie Sheen, what the hell was I thinking LOL? I'm glad this one won the poll, love this movie!! It doesn't get enough love.
This is one of my favorite movies when I was a young teenager. It was so much unlike anything like it before, and what is the the most awesome part...the Indians had been doing pretty badly in real life for a long time, and they Won the American League east championship pennant in real life, in 1995 and again in 1997, much like the team winning the same league championship in this movie. That being said, watching the Toronto Blue Jays (my Family's home team) win the World series back to back in 1992 and 1993 was epic.
I'm a Blue Jays fan and I live in Erie, PA. Cleveland was a lot closer to drive to than Toronto so my parents used to take me to the games when they played the Indians. Cleveland was doing so poorly at the time that there were actually a surprisingly large number of Toronto fans in the stands every time we went! This would have been in like the early '90s when Toronto was on their hot streak.
Getting a bunch of old guys to play on a team isn't always the worst decision to make! My Arizona Diamondbacks did it... Created a team.. got a bunch of old guys/has been's and won the world series in 2001. lol... we have sucked since.. but at least we got 1 lol.
Bro, I know you had fun watching this. You gotta watch Brewster's Millions it's another 80s comedy classic with Richard Pryor and John Candy together that's like Major League meets Trading Places. 🍻
I’ve always said baseball was my first love and as far as baseball movies go, this one is second only to Field of Dreams. I’ve been watching this movie for over 30 years and I still get chills when Cerrano hits his home run.
I live in northeast ohio, I was ten years old when this came out and we were on our way to the movie theater to see it and my sister's car broke down, I'll never forget it, But I absolutely love this movie

I never was one much for baseball as a kid like my Grandpa in 70s. I still wasnt as an adult until a neighbor lady friend of ours took me to a Reds minor league game. The field on tv always looked so small but its more like huge and fun to watch then play live from the stands.
Fans of this are hardcore, not just baseball fans and it is also very accurate as to alot of the idiosyncrasies of professional baseball. Glad you enjoyed it, for me I have had many copies of this movie in one form or the other, video DVD etc and have watched it countless times it is one of my feel good movies.
When this came out we saw at 4 times in the theater and used all of the one-liners in this movie for ages. "Are you saying Jesus Christ can't hear curveball?" "I say fuck you jobu oh, I do it myself" "I look like a banker" And of course the classic.. . "Up your butt jobu" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I'm glad you watch this one mate
You want sports movies? The Sandlot, Field of Dreams, 42, Remember the Titans, Hoosiers: all must-sees, all classics! And yes, you most definitely need to see Rudy!
Yeah, I forgot to mention that one in my list. It was one of my favourites. It wasn't a baseball movie. It was a movie that happened to have baseball in it. And the dialogue was excellent.
Anybody notice the scoreboard out in center field of the Indiana "home" stadium? On top there's the advertisement for WTMJ. They forgot to take out the last little notice that they were filming at Milwaukee County Stadium.
Jeremiah Johnson. A film about the Original Gangster who moves into a new hood after fleeing some of the bad shit he has done to try to change his life and leave his past behind him.....but gets pulled back into his old way of life when the local gang (tribe of Cheyenne natives) kills his family for violating their turf and declares war on him.....he wins...after going John Wick style on every warrior they send to kill him they surrender enmass
I remember seeing this when it furst cane out as a 9 year old. Definitely made a huge impression on me and remains in heavy rotation at my house to this day.
I started rewatching “the expanse”, only ever caught the first season. Decent sci fi tv series. It’s about humans populating our solar system, in the near future. A war threatens to break out between earth Mars and the belt, where people mine asteroids. 🤷♂️ Noticed nobody else doin it, eh no worries though! Thanks for hanging in there👍☝️💙

Not sure if it was true or not but the story was Sheen also took steroids as well during the filming to add a bit more to the velocity of his pitches

@Chris it's up there for sure, though I was really fond of the old Hartford Whalers logo and color scheme from back in the day.
I grew up with Bob announcing the Brewer games, so that made us Brewer fan kids feel included, lol. Love this movie. I like the sequel, too.

I am totally with you on that. I wasn't into baseball or hockey until I watched the games in person. It changed my view on them entirely.
whoever thought, Cerrano would be doing all state commercials 30 years later
Remember seeing this in the theaters... People were standing up and cheering at the end just like a real baseball game.
Same thing happened when I saw it in the theater . I've never seen that happen in any other movie theater. I looked over at my dad and he was wiping tears from his eyes.

In my opinion this is one of the best statues that has been produced by prime 1, looks insane.
Anybody notice the scoreboard out in center field of the Indiana "home" stadium? On top there's the advertisement for WTMJ. They forgot to take out the last little notice that they were filming at Milwaukee County Stadium.
Great reaction man! I haven’t seen this movie in a minute! Fun fact, Serano is the guy from the Allstate commercials
Sounds like yojimbo, don't it.
i love that movie and i mean your not wrong but damn never would have thought to describe it that way xD
All these years crazy it's Dennis Haysbert as Pedro Cerrano
Me and my parents would watch this all the time growing up. It'll always hold a special place in my heart
"Professional break inner" got me good lmao.
I love this movie. Soo many great lines. "He crushes one towards South America" lol.
Now you gotta see the rest of the major league movies
I just wanted to say im sorry for what happened to you bro. Im gonna miss a lot of them videos not gonna lie. Hopes for your success going forward.
Eight Men Out is another great baseball film, about the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" scandal. It also has Charlie Sheen in it.
I'd love to see your thoughts on Bull Durham. One of my absolute favorite baseball movies next to this one.
Im still surprised they had a sign for call your shot then bunt
That last game actually wasn't the World Series. That was just a one game playoff to win the division.
“Just a bit outside. Tried the corner and missed.”
Such a great flick. It's a gold mine of one liners that people still use and recognize today.
Everyone needs a friend/mentor like Jake
One of my all time favorites!
Thanks for hanging in there👍☝️💙
Its good but pacing issues,it's not an easy watch if you're not heavy into sci-fi.
@@piotrswat169 ..that figures. I've high hopes for anything they might do with warhammer!
The guy who played Pedro cerrano did the Allstate insurance commercials 😂
In your next sports poll please add....
