Plastics bottles are a great survival tool! They can be found nearly everywhere. Uses range from brooms, traps, containers, cordage, stone boiling water, fishing floater, to berry picking container and more! Check out some uses of Aluminum cans: • Aluminum Can Uses Thank you for watching and I hope to see you in the woods!

i like the use of the "fish trap" as a berry picker/container--great reduction in frustration for kids (and parents) as well.
I can make a tall popcorn container--to use while watching videos!

The cordage is a great idea, going to try it. Thanks for info

  • @marjamada

Cordage is a good idea, however stronger cordage is made by cutting around the bottle. The cord is also perfectly straight, because it is cut from a 'sheet'. I've gotten 50' of really strong cord from a 2-liter bottle. Note that the edges can cut your hands when you try to pull a tight knot, so gloves are useful. As with Kevlar, knots are the weakest points, so I wrap the cord twice around, say a branch, and then tie, so the knot takes less strain. You can also boil water in a plastic bottle, if you fill completely under water and place in hot coals, cap pointing up. Open carefully. Good video. -bugoutcenterdotcom

Some great ideas in this video.
One thing not mentioned (and imo probably the most relevant survival use) is to start a fire using a plastic bottle.
Just fill it up with a bit of water and use it like a magnify glass.

+1 really liked the cordage idea and the comment by Andrew Cain, with idle hands there's potential for some serious lengths of heavier duty rope. Big soda bottles also make good shingles for a shelter roof.
For long term survival or (insert apocolypse of choice) shtf scenario I've often wondered if it was possible to re-sole a boot with melted/softened plastic?

  • @EastWoodlandSurvival
    @EastWoodlandSurvival  11 ปีที่แล้ว

You can do that also. Any way to get it cut into strips will work. Some bottles have seams however and it will usually be a weak point in the cordage. Thanks for the post!

Saw a guy build a canoe out of these. In the Orient they built one so large they put an outboard motor on it and used it for fishing. Never sink.
I had an idea to save your car if you knew you were in an area that might flood you attach the bottles in a mat form and lay them under your car or truck even if you have to build a platform to park on to raise your car you can park over the mats and should you get water rise your car would float at least?
Get enough of them you can build a green house another use is sprouting plants in multiple greenhouses. You could use these greenhouses that will do both help sprout a plant and make some pur water.
If you fill them with water and placed them around a bunker area you can stop bullets if you stack them 2 deep it will not stop prolonged bullets but they will stop the occasional stray that might result from a hunter.
IF you hot glue them together and use something like wood, or pvc, rope you can hold it up then lay plastic over it to keep water off your structure.
If somebody built a tube material that they could stuff bottle on bottle one could join the bottles easily and use them to boom oil? Add a weighted bottle every so often and it should keep the boom in the water and holding the oil back.
If you made same type material one could use them for housing by coiling it up over a frame once the entire area is covered you cover with plastic then some chicken wire and apply shotcrete or a concrete mixture that would stand after you finish leave the bottles in if you like the insulation or take them out and use them again if you are pressed for bottles.
If you wanted to retain the heat of the sun you can fill them with water and bring them indoors or lay them in your bed after heated.
I was thinking one could use a sheet of plywood and drill holes in the board to allow the tops of the bottles to fit, then tie them off and tie them up on the bottom and you would have a wonderful dock that should last as long as you use marine plywood. Once you got the bottles tied together should not be too difficult to keep them in place? This could be the way the car saving platform could be made.
They make great bombs ? If you take 3 MRE heating packets and funnel them into a DRY bottle then add the prescribed water for the 3 place lid on shake and toss it should make a good sound.

great vid, just found your channel and sub'ed. on the part of using the plastic as cordage, Ive done almost the same system in making plastic fishing line by taking time and a small flame to heat and stretch it to about 20lbs mone fil size for cane poles." yes i was bored that day in the woods, it was raining what can i say.lol" At that size it holds about 10lbs static weight, and will hold knots.

I tried using the small water bottles as "hot water bottles" last winter. The small water bottles feel good on feet, hands, or in the lap. They're so slender that you can stuff one in each pants pocket while standing around or moving about. They stay warm about 40 minutes. The liter bottles would be excellent for both feet to warm up. A hot water bottle will put a smile on your face.

Last winter while setting by the fire I cut up several and made a whisk broom. It was a little disappointing but a lot better than no broom. It just hit me that in a pinch you could melt a few for a knife or any small tool handle. It would probably be faster than carving one out. My son mentioned that he didn't like watching me file on a moving part in the lathe without a handle. Most time I use a golf ball but may melt and shape a bottle for a file handle.

I don't get it either. When someone posts a video to help or to share, some are overcome with a sense of the, "keyboard warrior" in them. We can always learn something new or at least appreciate someone who tries to help. I for one think people who post to share knowledge are the best kind of people there are. Lot of people are asking to cut the bottle circumference, yes you can do that and make a long strip. Be careful of seams in some bottles because the seams create weak points in the cordage.

As a berry picker, you could use a strip of bank line to tie off two points then just hang the whole thing around your neck. That would give you two hands for picking.

If you cut little L flaps on the cut edges of the big bottle and the bottom edge of the top, you can then overlap them into a click lock type of connection for holding the bottle top inside the bottle.
Cut off a bigger open portion of the bottle neck for larger fish and crawdads, ... you mention making a broom with little fibriles, do the same TINY TINY FIBRILES on the inner sloping edge of the inside bottle top and bend them a little inwards toward each other and this allows bigger fish and crawdads to easily swim/crawl in, and the fibriles fold inward closing the opening, and preventing them from getting out.
Can also make a big lip scoop (and funnel) with the bottle top neck. Allows putting water into a water bottle small opening, or scooping up dirt/sand into a water filter bottle design, or other seeds and funnel situation into a container. Able to sift out smaller fire ash (potash) from larger coals for making leachings for potash and lye products.
Mini snow shoes over dry boots, very good, slick bottle allows same skiing over snow. Downhill ski racer! If you need to, then cut some lines across the bottles and make little cut flaps poking outwards. Slide foot forward, flaps poke down preventing backwards slipping. Always forward movement !!!!
Cut out proportions for shoe insoles, for further heat protection between boot sole and rubber insoles/socks.
Cut out large cylindrical C sections of bottle, ... and become your own plastic armored knight. Make your own lightweight plastic leggings. Wrap around legs at upper boot level. Make 2-3 tied-up sections for boot to knee (or higher thigh) leggings. Protects during snow travel, brushy/thorny/sticker areas, or in snake territory. No snow and wet brush to upper boots and pants. Allows free movement in brushy/thorny/sticker areas, no clothing grabs. Snakes bite and break their teeth. Leggings keep boots and pants dry and warm. Cut out a boot toe to upper boot section tied-up to the leggings, and entire foot and legs are protected from snake bites.
Plastic leggings also provide some protection against mites, spiders, ticks clinging on, biting flies/mosquitoes limited area to bite, and crashing shins into rocks or tree spurs.
Make smaller arm leggings for further dry or wet brush travel, and weather and insect protection.
Make a (green) plastic sun or rain hat out of bottle, like a woven straw hat. Multiple bottles cut into strips. Master bottle hat, cut diagonal strip lines up to insloping bottle neck for initial weaving structure. Incorporate multiple strip cuttings from other bottle(s), weaves larger brim onto hat. Dangle down little spoonlike cut outs, like Aussie anti-fly devices. Keeps flies, biting flies, and mosquitos away from face.
With some very damaged plastic bottles, make a water carrier, with a rubber balloon. Using bottle bottom, cut diagonal strip lines around bottle. Use cut strips from other damaged plastic bottles, for making larger and higher water bottle sides. Insert balloon into plastic weaving. Use scoop and funnel bottle top for filling up rubber balloon. Using a tie to rubber ballon sealing water inside. Put scoop and funnel bottle top onto woven plastic water bottle, locking bottle integrity in place.
With very special care, cut out small air openings into bottle sides. Pack outermost surface inside the bottle with wet wood bark. Pack in wet moss next. Then insert dry tinder and finally insert small coals inside, making a plastic Apache fire carrier. Wet woods will slow down heat and burning of coals. Air holes allow slow burn of coals and tinder. Wet moss and bark keeps heat away from bottle outsides burning/scalding carrying the device.
Cut out a C section for snow survival sun glasses. Cut out from bottle, and then cut very small lines for horizontal slit eye openings. Prevents snow blindness. Green bottles provide greater protection, brown plastic is most desired.
Cut out a C section of bottle for forearm legging. Store map or other visual paperwork under plastic legging on arm, instead of constantly pulling out, unfolding, folding up, and putting back into pocket many times.
Cut up damaged plastic bottles into very tiny FIBRILEs as tiny dry plastic tinder and kindling. Finer cuts almost as burnable as steel wool, cotton, or cut up rubber strippings. Always dry or wiped free of moisture, Burns quick and fast heat for fire starting. More burnable than redwood/sequoia/pine/poplar or pitchwood.
Use cut out C section and wrap with aluminum foil for fire reflector of candle or small fire.
Use large section and wrapped with aluminum foil for mirror or survival reflector getting attention.
Cut out large C bottle section. Wrap neck with scarf, and pull up coat collar. Put plastic C section over coat collar and under hat. Excellent neck warmer, wind chill neck protection, rain drip away from neck, anti-insect tick, biting fly, and mosquito neck protection.
Cut out large C section of bottle. Using fingers as template, cut lines between fingers in C section ... with T ends at finger tips. Thin cut edges at finger junctions. Bend and pull T ends between and under fingers, creating upper hand protection and plastic warmer shield, keeps hands dry and warm. Better wind chill, rain and snow protection, and dry or wet brushy travel for hands. Tie-up to forearm leggings for greater plastic armor knight uniform.
Using a circular cone cut on bottle side, Cut out and fashion into a plastic skull cap. Cut multiple bottle C sections. Use as plastic clamps and heat retention. Put skull cap under sweater cap for top of head heat retention, ... and sweater cap keeps it in place. Using a modified cut out clamp, cut ear flap designs for protecting ears from frostbite. Prevents wind chill, frostbite, heat retention, dryness. Clam for forehead and ears, Clamp for back of head. Use clamps under sweater cap, or outside of cap, pressing sweater cap tight to head. Warm, dry, and wind/frostbite protected.
Cut out bottle C section. Put into upper boot area above toes and feet, keeps wet upper boot away from dry socks and feet.
Cut out plastic sections for pants butt pockets. Place plastic sections into pants pockets keeping butt warm and dry away from wet pocket fabric or wet brush or falling into snow and wetness, rain etc.
Many more trinket items to make.
Good episode, not mentioned by other bushcraft or survival sites. KUDOS.

i have made a gas mask by cutting bottom off at a curved angle, took screw off lid off filled bottom with char cloth and other cloth poked holes on side tie on, would have been great if mace was sprayed on you full face protection! yes so much you can do with bottles even melt it down and pour on other things that need to be weathered, or to make a glue like to bond things! and you find them everywhere!

You know those bottles truckers toss out beside the roadway? That ain"t lemonade. But if that were the only bottle, rinse it out in a nearby creek. Fill it up and cap it with no air space. Set it upright in a coal fire until it boils. Make instant coffee. Drink it. Pee in the bottle. Return it where you found it so's not to disturb the ecology.
