    I recently was watching a show where a guy stuck on a island had to survive on the back wash he found from washed up bottles. It got me curious to know if it was possible to build something like a copper still, but out of plastic. This is simple but wow definitely a life saver if ever needed.

    Excellent idea,, one suggestion would be to cut the bottle in half, put the dirty can of water inside of the bottom half, and slide the top piece inside of the bottom piece to prevent any moisture escaping.

    • @tarstarkusz

      I seriously doubt that these water bottles would leach at such a low temperature. Assuming the ambient temperature was 80F, the inside of those bottles shouldn't have gotten above 130, at the most.

    • @Ravtank1
      @Ravtank1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tarstarkusz Actually UV sunlight and thermal heating from the sun causes the release of Bisphenol-A. If you want to reproduce later without causing your

      I suppose UV light might be able to cause some leaching, but these are water bottles designed to be used outside in the sunlight. The temps this is operating at and the exposure time is so low that it's almost 100% certainty that these bottles aren't going to leach any chemicals in the water.

    OBVIOUSLY in an emergency situation ANYTHING is better than dying from lack of water. But it's worth considering the following: (1) plastic containers, even those designed to store potable water or other drinks DO degenerate with age and can release toxins in TINY QUANTITIES into their contents. (2) if your source water is contaminated with contaminants that have a lower boiling point than water, these will evaporate/condense first, so that the first lot of distillate with have a HIGHER concentration of these toxins than the original water source. So it may be advisable to discard the first lot of distillate .....

    • @arweninnj

      Rheanon Jasmyne yes it came from the water vapor that evaporated from the surface of the smaller container inside the plastic bottle. The vapor then condensed on the sides of the plastic bottle and ran down to the bottom. That's what he poured out.

      +charles o'brien They have other methods in other countries to produce water from the air and heat. I saw a huge black wicker basket around 8 feet tall being used to produce water from salt water evaporation and condensation from the heat. The wicker was heat and they dumped salt water into a large bowl and collected what the wicker had formed and dropped below.
      Wicker water production? Try looking that up. It's kool.

    Another problem with this is that if your stuck somewhere, you need to find a clean plastic bottle and wait all day for a shot of water, so you'll need to find many plastic bottles. Didn't they just figure out a way to filter water using a branch?

    Great but you have to figure out a better way to collect water for more than one person to drink.
