- Well everyone, it is finally here - SOTO has launched and launched me into fan-boy heaven. I have had an overwhelmingly enjoyable time with this expansion, especially considering the departure from our standard expansion format.

Really impressed by the playtime I got out of this "mini expac" as a casual player. Theres plenty more for me to do (That I probably wont for a long time, starfield and work calls) but I was able to get a solid 28 hours of playtime between the actual content and the new vault system. £25 well spent
I just got back into game, I dropped game after reaching level 80 (i went into heart of thorns and got killed doing almost anything) got some new gear on trading post and been playing path of fire and its awesome, can't wait to play end of dragons and this expansion!

thanks for the video, as I'm currently out of time to play it myself I appreciate a spoilerfree overview. While my favourite TH-camrs like Woodenpotatoes do let's plays I have to stall their videos for those spoiler reasons.
Now when I come back to GW2 I will have to decide whether I first get the original Skyscale, finish the Icebrood Saga, which I skipped when I played EoD, or jump right into SotO. I do want to finish all of them, and it's probably a good idea to wait for SotO since there is content to be added and the daily/weekly systems seem a little be a work in progress.

Bought SotO but not played it yet as I'm one of those story nuts sticking to strict chronological order (trapped in HoT/LWS3 at the moment). BUT the new reward system? I was 2 days from claiming the Chest of Loyalty when the switch hit and I was scared as I NEEDED a Vision Crystal. Two days of incidental PvE Open World and I had the AA to buy it and am now a Knight of the Thorn. Two days as opposed to thirty. And my Human Male Reaper looks like a right idiot with Macaw Wings and Butterfly Blade, as The Six intended. I'm liking this!

I LOVE that we get to play with weapons from different elite specs! I've been playing with a hammer as a weaver because I dislike Catalyst, and it felt like they were made for each other!
Weaver with a hammer is one of my fav combos.
I'm loving great sword/ shortbow herald. 😮
good expansion i like it i prefer EOD for scenary but this soto will be released incrementally
The story telling is really way better than the last expansions/living world releases. Even a friend of mine that always jokes and nags about the characters in story and "just wants to be done with it" told me when we finished that he was really invested in the story and enjoyed the story for the first time!
In my opinion there is barely any better compliment than that but even me, someone that wants to see the good in every story we get must say they really outdid it this time. SO much better.

I believe the META and the strikes are less difficult because this expac is really aimed at new players. Clean slate for the story, even ground for the mount, for the relics, no elite specs, legendary armor for open world, showing a wide range of environment in the archipelago to showcase what GW2 can be about...,. I think they wanted it to be as accessible as possible
I actually don’t think this expansion is aimed at new players - if anything EOD was more about guiding new players than SOTO. Every expansion from here on out is going to be a “clean slate” with the structure change. And accessibility has never been an issue with GW2, for most of its content, but I’ve felt this time around the scaling and difficulty for certain “end bosses” - particularly the strike - was just a bit under tuned. Not wanting Harvest Temple CM levels… but just a little bit of a nudge up would have satisfied me a bit more.
I love Soto. The Story is great and 2 new maps fully satisfied me. This being said, I do have an issue with the Wizards Vault. I'm mostly enjoying it and I even unlocked the Griffon Skin already but I wish we could reroll objectives (even just one). I keep getting the task to participate in a festival in my daylies and since there's no festival I can't do it. This thing has shown up 3 times ( the system has been out for 5 days) already. It’s starting to piss me off. Other than that great expansion. Can’t wait to see what the next update will bring.
You are referring to 'Complete an Activity' as it mentions festival events in the description. There are a bunch of other adventures you can do as I have completed this 3x already.

story wise, although a bit short. its so much better than EoD...
I think the story was very well done and probably the best story they’ve told in years. I can’t help but feel that sense of how they were really balling on a budget that they have one zone made entirely of re-used assets and it’s a ton of places we’ve already visited. I was hoping I would never have to step foot in keineng again... Then the second zone, yes it’s a spectacle but if you look at it more closely? It’s basically the same building aesthetically spanning an extremely wide range of space. If you didn’t have your map to help you around you could be literally anywhere on the map. After just a week of play and already bored of the zone. Maybe I’m too invested in aesthetics and just crave some variety in something new. The rifts are essentially you doing the exact same event on end consisting of killing a group of mobs followed by killing a boss. I don’t recommend chaining them unless you want to go insane. The wizards fault is a good improvement.
I'm newer and use the free boost just to have a level 80 to unlock the weapon training. So I have only done the intro essentially, and I love the 2nd Misson running while.crippled it was scary lol

Is it worth buying the expansion just for a different way to obtain the skyscale? I've heard its a pain in the ass obtaining it the other way 😂
Honestly - if you really want the Skyscale: YES! It was so much quicker.
Plus all the other content you get. ;3
I liked the plot, and it certainly hands us a new setting. In some cases the new masteries wildly revamp old settings too - rank up flight and give the griffon a high speed run around Bloodstone Fen for a laugh.
Unfortunately, ArenaNet dropped the ball on the Nordic names again, and I have to say I haven't had my ears cheese-grated off this badly since being subjected to Knut "Noot? 🤮WTF, NOOT???" Whitebear with alarming frequency on the only time I made a norn character.

I'm vaguely positive about the new Wizards Vault reward system too. I've been chaperoning a brand new player who is currently on a free-to-play account and have watched them switch from no dailies, to being able to pick up some tangible "log-in-and-do-stuff" rewards, but a bit puzzled as to why some of those PvE rewards are locked behind expansion locations, or differ from my selection of PvE rewards (because I have a bit more selected). That and why free accounts are getting bombarded by Kryptis essence rewards after stumbling on a Kryptis incursion.
On that note, essences get added to the list of things like jade runestones that need material storage slots.
As a general verdict, I'm coming up with, "This is refreshing, but maybe think things through a bit more."
I agree about the new rewards system locking quests behind expansion content. Unfortunately I received a less-than-friendly reception when I raised this on Reddit with most vets telling me to "just play through the story and catch up" which sort of defeats the purpose GW2's horizontal gameplay. It's one of those things that vets don't care because it doesn't impact them directly unless they have a friend who is starting the game.
Agree re astral acclaim dailies and weeklies
So no new races, classes, or specializations? No changes to old systems to modernize them at all? Its so hard finding information on what exactly this expansion is bringing to the game.
New story, maps, strikes, weapons, weapon combos, music, art, login system, mount/skin acquisitions, and MEMORIES ❤️❤️❤️
Sorry, but I cant agree with you in some aspects.
If something is casual-friendly, doesn't mean it is bad and should be made harder. I've had enough with my 1-year road to The Voidwalker title and just want to have some relaxed open world farm, without the Dragon's End bullshit with 2hours of events and high risk of end-meta fail - because of incredibly high health pool and extremely short DPS phases length.
The only thing I found to be severely lacking is the enemy design. The models are too similar to many other enemies we've encountered earlier in the game - they could have kept the old rigs and enhanced them, instead we have a mordrem rider with a fleshy texture slapped over.
Where did I say it was bad????? 👀
high risk of meta fail? Never have I ever experienced a meta fail the last year xd
they ripped off RIFT online's rift system but somehow did even less with it.
there is a much better and easier way to fix the astral vault time gate "problem".
Just make it able to switch between pve pvp and wvw instantly for both daily and Weekly.
But if you pick WvW, u get 8 weeklys, if u do 3 WvW weeklys and u switch to pvp, u will now get 5 more pvp weeklys instead of the 5 wvw u had... and u are still 3/6 for your weekly progression.
Tha way you don't overcomplicate things with caps on astrals and new things to be added in order to prevent the abuse of this INSANLY overpowered system.
But yea.. simple change really.. just make it an instant switch, always..
Other than that the wizard's vault is in my opinion one the best system GW2 has ever had ..Maybe even tied with the mount system on the first place.
it's ridiculusly good... rewards are insane.
it's a content on it's own, and it's also a very good way to give life to older maps ( by giving the pve section of weeklys Meta quests on older maps).
Also thanks to it, we got rid of a very unhealthy and abusive daily-log in system that should've never been there in the first place.
if i could rate this wizard's vault thing, i would rate it 100/10.
Its not Bad content, but until its complete, its not an expansion. 2 maps, mostly empty to explore since 1 is like 4 idéntical Islands. Not Hearts to complete. And their top 1 New mechanic is repetitive as it can get. Only People looking for the New leg amor will play this content in 2 weeks.
WV is a nice adition but daily reward Just by loggin in is waaay less. And the daily ach consumes much more time to do, as it FORCES you to do 4 specific task, instad of 3 of a full list. Overall, little and way too repetitive content, no really New mechanics and a fucking overhaul to the combat that is messing around Witherspoon everyone.
Even all of this, i apreciate they are trying to develop the game, and hope it gets better.
I think Secret of the Obscure more like an addon. It's too small to be called an expansion. Not too excited to drop $79 on this, to be honest. The maps are small.

Expansion is fine, except for the Wizard Vault; mainly the daily achievements. We either need to have more dailies to choose from or just 3 required for the main chest; anything not to force us into doing exactly the ones it picks out for you, because some of them are god-awful
It would be nice if i.e. minidungeons with achievement prereqs like the one in echovald weren't in the daily rotation. Players having to trek around the map just to figure out how to get in is a bit much work for a daily.
I wish I was enjoying the expansion but I'm not. I don't like relics, most are underwhelming, they couldn't even be bothered to tell us what they do in the useless vague tooltips, the dailies are a mess, my first day in the expansion and I got locked out because the dungeon was bugged with like 40 players trying to get in, LFG full of people trying to do the stupid daily, you're locked into you choice of daily type for no reason now. And more bugs in events, I did the event to protect this professor, it bugged out and couldn't be finished. The kestrel event, not only bugged out twice but loads of people in the squad had been trying over and over to do it for an achievement and it's just bugged. I strongly dislike rifts so far and cannot imagine grinding them, so it killed my hype for the PVE legendaries. I should be enjoying the story but everything being such a mess so far for me has totally ruined the experience. I can't get immersed because I've just been constantly irritated by bugs that have no excuse. Some of these have been reported for literally years and they put them as dailies with no options to do other activities on top of all the new bugged content.
I'm very, very disappointed. I hope others had a better experience than I have because it's just been bug after bug the last couple days now that I started.
Time to expand your content with other games friend just saying.

I really enjoyed the new zones, but by the gods, this was some of the worst storytelling in GuildWars to date and I've played since GW1 release.
