I am a Hongkonger. I am a bit touched to see the progress and development of my city over the time period of more than a century through the lens of railway development in this video. Thanks for your good work!
Is there some progress for Kai Tak Monorail? Anyway, I think about what if MTR build Whampoa - North Point Tunnel? So they can make Kwung Tong Line a circle line. I also think about what if they convert Peak Tram into metro standard train (example: Lyon Metro Line C) and merge it with East Rail/Tsuen Wan Line, or one of them merge with South Island Line. Are those three ideas possible? And I think it's better for Tseung Kwan O Line to extend to the south, maybe until Ocean Park Station.
YES! Finally my second bucket list is up. Thanks a bunch A correction here: Mong Kok East was called Mong Kok by the KCR until it merges with MTR. There were actually two Mong Kok stations coexist simultaneously.
@@MetroLiner Yeah, the other one is Taipei. There are several system in my mind but most of them are too small for a good sizable video. But I do hope for a remake for some older systems like New York or Beijing for higher quality
Great work but a little miss: The East Rail Line once had a short Wo Hop Shek branch from Fanling to Wo Hop Shek, which is mainly used for transporting corpses to the cemetery located there Which is closed shortly before full electrification of the line in 1983
Always love these videos! It feels like nothing really happened until the 70’s and 80’s and then suddenly an explosion of growth in the lines and network. Also I forgot there’s a Disneyland in Hong Kong lol 😅
If you want an explanation: people romanticize Hong Kong's period as a british possession but the thing is their disregard for it as merely a colony. It had no sort executive or legislative elections at all, just an appointed governor as if it was a department of a company. The difference of investment after China regained it is visible. It still has serious problems such as its precarious housing situation but in british days it literally had slums. If this isn't visible enough in the video already, Hong Kong becomes China in 1997
@@fresagrus4490 Life was definitely better before 1997, there was proper consultation, and freedom of speech and rally are protected. CCP bots and leftist like to make everything "housing problem", huh. It worked in USSR and China, but it won't work here. You cannot brainwash us and rile us up against the landlord because we are not ignorant to history. The best you can do is to use force to silence and arrest us.
Some detail information: In detail, there are several rail track changes at KCR East Rail Line, such as Hung Hum to Lo Wu change to double track during electrification(1975-1983), new high speed track (allow train run in 80-120kmh) to replace the old, sharp turn track along Tolu Harbour (from new Tai Po Market to Ma Liu Shui/University)
COOL! I haven't been down to HK since January 2020. It's good to know the next time I go I can take the East Rail Line all the way to the Island Line. That's going to save me some walking to be sure! I did not expect anything to have been built or expanded since 2018.
I haven't been since 2019 so I am as excited as you are. The east rail line expansion (commonly known as the "4th harbour crossing line" in Chinese) was planned as early as the 2000s. The B1M channel made a really good video about the whole construction and the reason that came behind it (over reliance of tsuen Wan line)
I am dying to visit Hong Kong again once they announce they will open borders and accept tourists. Every year I would visit them to ride their MTRs, ding ding trams and buses till Covid happened. Hoping to step into my second home city again soon.
Back in 1911, it’s definitely not called Mong Kok East. It should be Yaumatei and later changed to Mongkok. “East” was added to distinguish it from the MTR Mongkok station when MTR and KCR merged.
I just came back from HK. To go to the airport from Kowloon, I took the MTR to Tung Chung then it was a short cheap bus ride to the airport. Saved a lot of money that way. Much cheaper than the Airport Express, and cheaper and quicker than a direct bus from Kowloon. All in all, MTR is great. Efficient, clean and cheap. So glad KCR merged with MTR.
The fact that Hong Kong is so small, so the MTR has not much to work on right now. But there are a few proposals: the east Kowloon line, north island line, South Island line (west), northern link, tung Chung west extension, and the tuen men south extension. Currently none of these are being built
Has a railway serving Wo Hop Shek Public Cemetery at the past but just a single station. Before WWII has tram serving North Hong Kong Island, has cable car from dock to Mount Parker Hill build by dock company at late 18th century closed at 1930's(before WWII to 50's Hong Kong is one of main ship building center at Far East.) and Peak Tram serve from late 18th century to now.
2:28 When they split into two lines, I just want to know how the trains on the Tseun Wan Line turn back after terminating at Mong Kok? I know that the Up and Down line platforms in Mong Kok are in different levels and have no crossover between them.
Here are some reminders: At the start, Tai Po Kau Station should be named 大埔 Tai Po, KCR renamed it to 大埔滘 Tai Po Kau at 1966 There’s also a Wo Hop Shek Branch operates by KCR that runs between Fanling and Wo Hop Shek (South of Fanling), the branch opened in 1949 and closed in 1983 Tung Chung Line opened at 22/6/1998, instead of 21/6/1998

Yikes, the Sha Tau Kok railway has a wacky alignment, especially between Wo Hang and Shek Chung Au. Was that because of Hong Kong’s mountainous terrain?
@@hommagat2587 What is at Sha Tau Kok nowadays? So it's not worth having a railway line there now? I wonder whether it would be worth having a rail link to Sai Kung.

I'd like to correct something here Actually Mong Kok (Underground one), Yau Ma Tei and Central were called Argyle, Waterloo and Chater. They renamed as current names after Island Line was opened. At the same time, Lai Wan renamed as Mei Foo (This name is from the Chinese translation of Exxon Mobil😂) Before Tsuen Wan Line was opened, Kwun Tong Line was called Modified Initial System. Great visualisation! Just wanted to know the reason behind not capitalising 'line' for the MTR lines (eg Kwun Tong line instead of Kwun Tong Line), because you did capitalise it in your other videos. If you are referring to Wikipedia, that site is wrong by the way. Capitalising suggests 'line' is part of the proper name for MTR lines and should be listed in the key as Tsuen Wan Line, Kwun Tong Line, Island Line, Tung Chung Line etc instead of Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island, Tung Chung etc. Even if this is not and line is only a common noun, this is good practice as these names on its own will more likely refer to the station rather than the line.
