    I totally love the honesty of you vlogs, “would you guys like to know what new is hurting…?”! And in the middle of explaining the excruciating pain when your IT-band kicked in, we get “…does my hair look bad?” I really did laugh out loud! No shame Flora. There’s always next time, and you cover 60k for God’s sake, not many can say that. I’m super impressed. Hope you heal quickly.

    Bravo for this and huge respect to you for knowing when to stop to respect your body ! 60km is already a lot, and I am sure you will never regret pulling back when it was the moment! Good luck for the following races 🥰🥰

      Thank you 💙 you're right, I don't regret it! I resent that it was necessary, but in the moment it really was the best option

      Suzie said it well- when the body naturally invites us inside ourselves, through its clear message of pain, when we honour that- it sends a loving signal through our nervous system and all our organ systems that we are safe and we can trust ourselves to take care of ourselves.
      In the long run, that’s a true athlete.
      You go girl ❤

    Your composure during the entire race from the start to finish was admirable. I recently got my first DNF and i felt humiliated and was not as kind to myself as I wish I was. Thank you for this.

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!! I handled it a lot better than I thought I would, probably because I went into the race knowing full well that it was a very real possibility. It can be heartbreaking, but being kind to yourself makes it a bit easier 😘

    Many years with chronic illness have taught me how to partner up with my body instead of fighting it. It's totally worth it. I do a lot of running and other sports and my body allows me so much more now because there's a kind of trust between my aspirations and my capacities. I wish you a good recovery and all the best.

    Just finished one of the hardest 24k”s ever for me. It was so hot. That race looked very challenging no shame in listening to your body. Good luck in the rest of the races coming up. 100k will be there when you’re ready. I’ll be chasing my first 100k in February. Your post and videos inspire the hell out of me

    I dread the times you suffer from something your body just plucks out of thin air to hurt, and you just can’t push through. You know it’s a party stopper.. Had IT band issues with a much shorter distance, one I’d covered fine multiple times but this once bam.. it was only a marathon distance and I was just over half way.. so managed to run walk it in.. and it was heart breaking seeing the time slipping by, but so much pain! You made the right choice! Good luck for the next one.. hope you get those hips,glutes or whatever else is causing the flare up sorted..

    Huge respect to you Flora for uploading this and being so honest with us. I loved following the trackers on Saturday, you were doing so well, but you can see immediately how much pain you were in, and there's no doubt you made the right decision when you look at everything you have coming up!
    This was the perfect motivation for my 50 miles tomorrow (Manchester to Liverpool), although I'm very jealous of the beautiful scenery that you had. I'll definitely be using your mantra, especially the 'be patient' part when everyone inevitably sets off quite quickly.

    Amazing effort, Flora, 60km in the beautiful lakes is a great achievement. Good on you for making the decision to pull out - I can't imagine how disappointing it must have been, especially when you didn't expect the problems that occurred. Wishing you a good recovery so you can enjoy your upcoming races.

    I once had to pull out of a 100km ultra at the 36km checkpoint - I was so mad at my body. Had to pull out as my blood sugar levels kept on dropping and refused to go up. But at least I got to 36km. It was my fourth 100km event as well, so at least I have done 100km before in the past.
    Good call pulling out when you did! I really hope you heal fast for the other races you have coming up.

    I had a 50k on Saturday, my second Ultra ever. Unfortunately I'm not even going to start because out of the blue I have terrible back and arm pain- a Cat Scan has revealed I have problems in my C3-C6 cervical discs , with a bulge in one that is touching a nerve. I'm on strong meds, started therapy today have work to do the next few weeks/months to hopefully recover fully and do the utmb Mexico in November. My 80k ultra of June is also out. Gotta focus and heal , and get rid of this pain ASAP! A timely withdrawal is a win , well done!

    I so felt for you coming down that second hill. It must have been soo painful and so hard to make that decision but as i learnt from another excellent vlog of yours it is worth planning for these scenarios and i hope now you feel even more confident you made the right decision. I think you did. My heart steings pulled when you met up with Tia and Fjorn(sorry spelling?!) Sounds like UTS is really important to you so rooting for you there and before that Croatia. I echo the comments here about your honesty. I love following your adventures and I take away tips to try out on my own adventures so thank you, thank you.

    Thank you for showing us your journey. I know it wasn't what you hoped for, but you were very vulnerable and real and I appreciate that. Having recently decided to drop down my distance for an upcoming race it's been painful seeing all the Instagram posts about "sticking it out" and "trusting your training" and "just go for it!" when the most responsible thing is to trust your gut and do what's actually appropriate for you and your body and your mind. Love following your channel. Head up! Be patient! and Have Fun! love it.

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I totally get this conflict. Some days I stick it out to the end (for better or worse) but it's good to be flexible. Sometimes we should push boundaries and sometimes the sensible option is to do what you know you can do even better! Huge good luck, I'm sure you'll ace it (and there are always future races to test yourself!)

    Hey, just wanted to say that you have really helped me with my running. I've now got the Runna app too and its been great for my 10k training. Thank you for sharing your highs and lows with us, it's pretty inspirational! When I'm having a bad run or if I have an injury I know what I need to do because I've seen you go through it. It brings a huge sense of relief to know that along with the great runs you also have the not so great ones. I can't wait for my first trail race in a few weeks. 😁 Well done on your 60k. Congrats on a challenging, beautiful 60k!! I know, not the A goal, but a weekend well spent! Those views were spectacular, and the aid station incredible. I love mantras; I have an ever growing list, and read it before every race. As I run, one pops up and stays the whole race. IT issues are SO painful. I've learned that, though it's not a problem in training, it WILL pop up during my race between 18-20 miles. Thankfully it disappears when the race is over, but it can be absolutely EXCRUCIATING. It must have been so nice to see Fiann (?) And Tia at the end. Don't forget to text her next time!! 😂

    You ran an absolutely marvelous race. You ran nearly 60 km over and down mountains much of it while in pain. That takes grit, elan and a hell of a lot more fitness than most people on the planet. There's an American guy you may have heard of by the name of Mark Twain. He said, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then, if you don't succeed, quit 'cause there's no point being a damn fool about it." Well done. Truly well done.

    Words here from someone probably twice your age, consider it wisdom or not🤔
    In my younger days I always pushed it and ran/trained through the pain only to end up incapacitated for months at a time.
    Now in my older, and think wiser days, listening to my body and pull back if an ache, work on strengthening that area.

    The 100K is absolutely another beast ;-)
    It's no shame to know when to quit, instead of going on and risking getting injuried/sick and ruining all other runs to come.
    Running an ultra is supposed to be fun, hard, pushing limits, fun, an adventure and "Feeling of relief and Victory" when done.
    Give it some time and you will prepare for another 100K (or longer...), because you are strong and stubborn and really can do it!

      @@FloraBeverley It's a great atmosphere, you'll love it, I loved it last year red carpet, red smoke!!! I'm expecting a 2km slow run from start then an hours hike up the Llanberis path, going to take it very easy at start this year and especially on those rocky descents, first one extra light on feet because I know what's in store on second ascent, and don't want my legs bashed in too early...done that southern face hiking route many times up Snowdon... I'm super excited too, though after doing Beast of Beacons last weekend, it's a hard reminder what's in store... :)

    I love the Lake District, being based in the south don't get there as much as I would love to, but every time I did so far, it blew me away with its beauty, then chewed me up in races (whether Orienteering or mountain marathon) with its toughness and it meant I enjoyed every minute of it - what does that say about me I wonder? You were at least rescued in a way that one wants to be if given the choice - the body does what it does and you need to listen to it when training and also when trying to get out of it all that you tried to train it for. I am trying to gain back fitness after months out due to various illnesses so very familiar with the body just not doing what you are used to being able to expect of it. Maybe one day I'll join you on the repeat attempt on that Lakes 100.. It is tempting. But first, let's get ourselves ready for the next challenge.

    Totally empathise with the ITBS issues which are really hard to predict. In my first ever 50k ultra, we had 21K with a lot of road and also a lot of downhill, and I ended up with terrible ITB pain in my left outer knee. You know how it goes, the pain just gets worse and it increases. And the longer you run the longer you'll need to recover as the other tissues around the knee start to get really sore. I decided to keep going, and stopped loads to stretch the ITB but looking back, it would have been wiser to DNF!
    I assume you're doing plenty of gym and I'd be curious how many hours of S&C you do per week. I totally neglected S&C before my first ultra and paid the price with painful knees and a full month before getting back to pain free running. Now I'm really trying to spend way more time in the gym and started doing kneesovertoes, bulgarian squats, sled, etc. Wish me luck in conquering the ITB monster... :)

    Nice video :) If i can give you one piece of advice it would be to not focusing on the bad things so much. When you do you're feeding the demons in your head, try ignoring upcomming pains and try to focus on the goods things instead (i know that sounds a bit easy but running big distances is all a mind game). Also don't focus to much on time, tell yourself this is your day. Its a day where everyone is trying to help you achieve your goal so enjoy it :) If it takes a whole day or longer, the more time you have for yourself ;). Anyway good luck on your next adventures

    Wise decision Flora. You never know how much pushing on would aggravate it and set you back further in your recovery. Thoroughly enjoyed your rambles to the camera, as always.
    I'll be at UTS also, for my 1st 100k. I'm terrified about hitting the 50k checkpoint too fast, so I may have to write your mantra on my arm to remind myself not to push too early. You'll love UTS by the way. All the races have changed courses (again), but they'll be just as good. And I think these ones are here to stay.
    How did you feel your nutrition went in the race. Do you think you got close to your 300 calories/hr?

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Oof amazing, that'll be brilliant. I actually felt like my nutrition was perfect, despite absolutely not eating enough on paper. It might have become more of an issue later on in the race if I'd continued, but I think I was probably consuming on average 200/h which is really a bit too low. I did get hungry once but inhaled several bits of food and immediately felt better.
      Having the electrolytes and carb mixes in my drink helped no end!

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also FWIW I wasn't super hungry the next day or even now, so I don't think I was in a huge calorie deficit! As I run more I find myself getting much more efficient I think. Also because of the injury I was going slower towards the end which probably meant I was burning less than I usually would

    Hi flora love your videos just looking for advice. New to running was training for Southampton half marathon, a month before did a 5km race and since then my IT band syndrome has been horrific. I tried running but only managed half a mile each time on 3 occasions in the month prior. I got a sports massage and saw a physio. I went to Southampton feeling fresh on Sunday and about 30 seconds in my IT band started 😩 I managed to complete it but was so intensely painful for the entire run. Just wanted to know how you treat your IT band syndrome coz a month of rest, using ice 3 times a day solid for a week with anti inflammatory and voltarol etc did nothing 😂 cheers nick

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh noooo poor you! I didn't find that complete rest helped me, because I ended up getting weaker each time, meaning that it would flare up earlier and earlier. Obviously speak to a running specific physio, but in my experience, strengthening my glutes and increasing my cadence really helped!! It's risky because it comes with the risk of other injuries (puts a lot of pressure on achilles and calves), but since ITBS was my main complaint, it massively helped me. You can get there!

    So what IS the answer to ITB pain? It’s not as though you don’t strength train (you’ve got some of the strongest legs I’ve ever seen in a runner!). And you’ve previous experience of the injury and have rehabbed and strengthened appropriately in the past. I’ve struggled with the same issue, which hit me hard at a 50k that started with a stretch of hard, flat farm tracks. Do you think this is something we can ever truly overcome? Top effort Flora and really enjoyed the video - in spite of feeling your pain! x

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure there's one answer, I think it depends on your weaknesses and the specific reason for your ITBS.
      In this case I think it was a combo of the flat, roady start followed by big ups and downs (so didn't activate the right muscles early on), and just a lack of hill conditioning on my part. I think it's probably related to my hip pain.
      In the past I worked on my cadence which massively helped but it's a risky strategy as it can cause more issues. But on the plus side, I've not had any ITB pain on the 2 runs I've done since, so it might have just been a fluke! Fingers crossed.
