mo’s note about data is so so so important. in the right hands, it’s a tool for the recognition of the potential for community. i hope to see you ladies in the fall.
you also spilled tea on that jealousy/antagonism part lmao. ive had similar experiences with the africans here in madrid, theres a large community from ecuatorial guinea (african colony of spain) and they speak spanish fluently and def can feel that vibe with some of the looks they give me and not other spanish ppl.. like they don't really see me as black or at least the same type of black i guess
That was the wine talking hahaha. We just wanted to be honest and share our views on something we, and I’m sure you too, get asked about often. It’s so bittersweet that we’re experiencing this but glad we get to experience life abroad!
Interesting. As a black Canadian in France, I don’t really notice how other Black people are being treated me because I don’t watch them. I found people to be very nice but I don’t think they think I’m foreign like I think most people think I’m French until I open my mouth. This was the same experience I had in Montreal. Maybe it’s my style who knows. I’m not quite sure what people mean by they know you’re not from here and act accordingly. I found people here to be friendly, the only negative experiences I’ve had has been with the security guards here who as you said are mostly black.
omgg just finished the whole video and wow so much insight! im a black american guy studying in madrid at an american uni and i def had similar experiences to you guys living in paris. im also from nyc and got super similar reactions from ppl too haha and yeah black privilege is def a thing too it's eye opening
Thanks for watching!! And wow, really?! I’ve been to Madrid briefly before but of course living here is a whole other experience. Maybe it’s a European thing haha
My name is Savannah and wow small world! I’m originally from the DMV and grew up playing tennis but I haven’t lived there full time in years. Maybe I have a twin out there :)
Like we said in the video, France and thus AUP doesn’t count race, but with 1100 undergraduate and graduate students total...I’d guess around 150 Black students. We’re on campus in hidden pockets almost lol.
Thanks for watching! She was referring to the master's program we both study at The American University of Paris. MAGC (pronounced like magic) is an acronym for Master's of Arts in Global Communications.
In the case of the black producer (Mr Zecler) who was violently molested by policemen. It has never been proven that there was a racist act. Only Mr. Zecler speaks of racist remarks by one of the police officers. The artists who were in the studios who witnessed and who filed a complaint against the police never made any racist comments on the part of the police. Yes, there was outrageous violence by these police officers, and that is shameful. But you cannot say that it was a racist act. There is police violence in France. It happens and it is unbearable. The yellow vests are there to prove that police violence in France is very common these days but it has nothing to do with racism. If there is a problem, it is mainly the training of our police officers when they use force and the way we recruit them. Obviously there are certainly racists in the French police as in all the police of the world. But be careful not to relay the lies of some associations and political organizations anti police and anti government in France who use racism on purpose.

I didn’t get your name SavvyC Scoop but you look like someone I played tennis with in the DC area several years ago.
My name is Savannah and wow small world! I’m originally from the DMV and grew up playing tennis but I haven’t lived there full time in years. Maybe I have a twin out there :)
It was several years ago, perhaps 2014 or 2015 in Old Town Alexandria.
how many black students would you estimate attend aup?

We can see your Nigerian-ness my there. You don't have a British accent. The only difference is you pronounce your English words clearly.

Off topic but you kind of remind me of Gabrielle Union
I get that all the time! My middle name is Gabrielle too :)
