This is a truly great documentary that reminds us of the failures that were to befall this unfortunate young woman. I am constantly fed up with all of the so called series on TV now that portrays the 60's & 70's as a "groovy, tolerant & fair" society. This reminds us all of what things really were like. The Man Alive documentaries certainly didn't pull any punches.

Interesting old documentary, I'm an old addict, over 36 years of addiction, I'm also an artist, glad I found this channel, I like watching old documentaries , I'm going to watch the other parts tonight, thanks for posting this, it's very common now but when this was made it won't have been 👍

Remember watching this at secondary school and having to write an essay on it.

The poem at the beginning is that of an abused child wishing she could bite or sting her abuser. Abandoned by her mother into one of the most notorious homes for child abuse. I shudder to think of the abuse she suffered and no wonder she felt she was better off dead. This poor poor girl who was probably only naughty her hole life as she was fighting against the abuse. In them days they just shipped you off to a metal institute to cover the hidden abuse. It’s so sad she just wanted to work with children in a children’s home most likely to protect them ....RIP you beautiful soul ... IF WE DON’T STAND UP FOR CHILDREN WE DON’T STAND FOR MUCH ❤️ I send love to all the Beechholme children god bless you all xxxxx

Thanks for the upload. My older sister had the book. This was the first time I heard of just a young woman - not any artist or whatever - who could die on taking drugs. It impressed me in such a way that I never in my life took drugs.

Prayers for Gale - but much admiration too.
Life dealt her a shit hand, and she refused to play.

Her mother should be ashamed of herself 😠

It's a shame we never got to hear her interview. It may be retained somewhere. The film said her mother had gone to a public (i.e. private) school, so she must've had a good background. Her grandmother was also at the funeral, we heard nothing of her aside from that. I wonder if Gale's mother went on to have other children.
As I write this comment, 5 Jan 2024, Gale would still be only 72 or 73 were she alive.
      RIP Gale Parsons, d 11 Feb 1970, aged 19.

Seeing those children doing exercising on a dusty dirty floor (8:19) was not unusual I remember it well you could actually see their clothing getting filthy
Out of curiosity I must have a word with my grandson to see if they still practice this customary habit of sitting children on the floor.

Does anyone know how to contact Jenny? I am researching women documentary makers in the 1970s and it would be so incredibly helpful to be able to contact her but her website is no longer online. Thank you.

Imaging all the kids being screwed up by being shown the other version of this in school.
