Jeff, some tricks and tips of mine are to use dish soap without water, last a bit longer when it’s being difficult. You didn’t mention getting the bead of the tire below where it seats on the rim. The rim is actually designed that way so one side can slip more towards the center of the rim to slip the tire on around the rim. Lots of times you may not even need spoons to put it back on. I recently had to do this on a log splitter and didn’t even take the rim off the splitter. Sometimes with the tire on your bench lube up the rim and tire and push the rim onto the tire while turning the rim works. I would also recommend you spray your valve stem both around it and on the core to check for leaks.

11:53 Thank you for the ratchet strap tip!! Worked like a charm on our lawnmower tire that went flat over the winter. Without the strap, it was just wobbling all over the rim and letting air out uncontrollably.

THIS is the way. The clamp was a game changer, the undiluted soap was the icing on the bead!
8 minutes to mount a new a new rubber on the rim.

I almost went with a tube, but all the tubes I could find locally were at least half the price of a tire. Since I still had to break at least one bead loose, I figured I may as well change the whole tire. Now I need to do the rear tires. Lol.

Super great video. I just got my new rear tires delivered for my rider, gonna install them on the rims today. One thing most of u dont know is dish soap has patrolum distillates in it. It can eat up ur tire over time. They do make a white paste that tire repair shops use but who has tire paste laying around? I have a better idea. I am going to try Ky- jelly in a spray bottle mixed with a little water to slip on the tire to the rim. Yes, I said Ky- jelly-lol. It's water based so no deterioration later on. I also learned to NEVER use tire bead sealer to a good rim. The bead sealer will corrode a rim making the rim worse. Thanks again for a great video.

Nice job Jeff! My weekend project last week was my wife's bike tire.... it was probably easier than a tractor tire but I have a point! I was curious as to the leak... tire off the rim, put air in the tube and baptized it in the kitchen sink, only to learn........ it was the Schrader stem!! Ugh, I changed it out, lesson learned, saving the new tube for when I really need it. Holds air now!!

Thanks, pulled tips from 2 different people, 2 years ago I just bought new rims and tires already mounted, but it had a set of these plastic bushings berrings that worked but not really good, my original cub cadet wheels were in very good shape with real berrings and zerts this junk set had a cheap plastic zert on the inside of the rim.
I took the old tires off my factory rims pulled the new wheels back of the tractor after using them for 2 years and they were very muddy dry mud we've had one of the wettest summers I can remember in the last 50 years so it was pretty bad.
Cleaned up the orignal rims put in new valve stems set aside busted down the new wheels and put the rubber on the orignal rims.
Its pretty ez to bust the bead on that size rim with just 2 hands and pushing down.
I also put agro type new tires on the back I had to buy and use a harbor fright tire machine for them and it worked really good pice of cake. I also got 2 long tire spoons from harbor freight.
But you cant change a tire on a rim with a 3/4" shaft hole with it.
You would need to buy the small one but it may not work for rear wheels as good and these agro style tires don't stretch as ez.
To take what I did to a lawnmore shop or tire store your looking at 10 each or up to 40 each wheel.
Its cheaper to just buy the tool and do it at home.
I belive I could make an adaptor to do smaller tires on the big machine.
What I did was used a black and decker workmate and put a long old screwdriver with a missing handel and it had a large flat spot the end of its made to hit with a hammer so it has to be 70 years old or more.
You put your 2 long tire spoons in one side the long shaft is taller then the tire one spoon on one side the other on the other side you use the center shaft to pivot from as you push each spoon past the other like opening sizzors this pulled the bead up over the rim, works both sides keep the bead from the back side in the center of the rim at its smallest diameter that gives room for the tools. The tires pop right off the rims dry.

I like the ideas for the clamps to break the bead and clamp the tire to the work bench. Recently had to change the front tire on my stepfathers mower, and he never told me he SLIMED it years before 😱!! Had to use a wire brush for the heavy stuff, then penetrating oil and time (about 45 minutes) and it wiped off. Would those Super Clean products do anything for that, or would you recommend the same if you came across that (something that essentially melts it off)?

    EXTRA ARMS
A couple of tricks / tools I have been guided to use is a "HEACY" steel plate with a 6" X1/2"bolt welded in the middle that I drop the rim over and tighten it down to stabilize the work.
2nd Is I grab the rim with vice grips so the tire does not move around and loose what I have gained. I am really considering building a breakdown machine for the little tires.
3rd If I am dealing with a tire that does not want to be air tight on the rim / rust pits etc.
I use a layer of toilet ring bees wax smeared around where the tire bead makes contact .
4th If your dealing with a persistent leaking tire, what I would recommend first is changing the stem as the cores are happiest with a new stem . Break down the tire enough to install a new stem is easier.

next time put a long steel rod in a vice put the center of the rim over the rod and then use those tyre spoons the moment you have 1 part over the rim than you can make a scissor movement with the rod as center and than you get it real easy of
i learnt this at a car garage where the tyre machine was broken

For anyone who watches this video, save yourself some struggle.
When attempting to remove or mount the tire, push the bead of the tire down towards the middle of the rim and put your spoon in the opposite side. All tubeless rims are designed so that the middle of the rim allows the bead to move towards the opposite side and you won't have to struggle to get the opposite bead on or off. Then you can work your way around. Don't try to take huge bites at a time.
Also, try to work with the rim on the bottom. Gravity is your friend. Especially when you start working with bigger tires. If you notice, at one point in the video, he can't lever the spoons into the middle because he's trying to pull the rim out through the top and it's in the way.
Finally, keep in mind that the smaller the diameter of the center of the tire is, the harder it will be to remove and mount. And just like most things in life, lubrication is the key ;)

I used to jump on the tire to break the bead. Clamps are a better idea, fewer twisted ankles.
I have a very dirty heavy duty two wheel string trimmer. I tried a pressure washer and between the leaked oil and dust/ dirt it just does not want to get clean. I have never tried super clean, would it work on caked on oily dirt?

I can't say I've never done that. Even the twisted ankle part. Lol.

Should of just put a tube in it. Also you can pull the valve core out and put a couple ounces of plane old automatic transmission fluid in it. You will be surprised how well the ATF works

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

ATF? I haven't heard that. I'll have to experiment with that. I almost went with the tube but all the ones I could find locally, weren't much cheaper than a new tire.

Hell I've cut the tire in a few spots and it's still holding onto the rim 😂. It's almost like the lip of the tire has melted to the rim 😮

Why would you be worried about damaging the old tire, taking it off, if you're taking it off because it's already useless and damaged? It'd be nice if you could get some cable Cutters in there and just cut the bead on each side of the tire and then just pull it off, but it's obviously tight enough as it is and you don't want to risk damaging the rim.

Ya know... if you aren't going to reuse that old tire, just cut it off... not like they're steel belted or anything 😛Plus you get a tad amount of satisfaction for all those times it went flat on you.

Strap works fine every time. If you don’t have a ratchet strap, tie a rope around it and, using a stick or some tool, tighten it like a tourniquet.
Another top… when working the bead, use two or three pairs of vice grips on the rim to keep the bead from slipping back as you with your the rim.

  • @jima3129
    @jima3129 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Why didn't you just put a tube in it? I just put the tire in my woodworking vise to break the bead on the valve side, work the tube in, done.
