I just purchased the Volkswagon 2020 Passat after checking out several other sedans. The reasons why I purchased it was the following reasons. I really like the way it looks. The grill, the updated rear, the wonderful comfortable but firm seats that are a good size side to side. The features the car has from Android Play to front end collision. The pickup is good with low end torque that is acceptable for a 4 cylinder car. The steering is not too light or tight. The trunk space and rear seat space is excellent. I like the way the interior looks and the ride is quiet, firm, and just a joy to drive. I have to drive a lot with my job and I know due to the design of the seats, I don't feel fatigued after driving for several hours.
I test drove a 2020 Passat today. It was the first Volkwagen I have ever driven. I thought it was pretty nice. I still have my 2010 SE with over 160k and have not had to replace any parts yet. I have done basics, tires, brakes. Toyota will in the past cut corners on interior quality and put money where the consumer does not see in long lasting reliability, fuel efficient etc. . The Camry is still roomy but the Avalon is the full size car.
A friend of mine is thinking of buying a new 2020 Passat S for his daughter. VW dealers are selling them for around $18K these days. Can't go wrong for that kind of money, if you don't mind a basic midsized sedan.
Owning a 2017 V6 sel premium I don't see a need or want to move to this vehicle. If I had to pick a new car in this segment today it would be the Accord due to the value and drive. I was sad to see how little VW did with this redesign.
Sean Woods I agree. VW took far too long to redesign it, as the previous generation was very long in the tooth, and should not have been around for as long as it did (2013-2019). This design doesn’t look like a total redesign, more like a derivative of the previous generation, which was dull and uninspiring. I really think the zenith of VW’s designs were in the early to mid 2000’s.
@@clothestravel I'm kind of let down at the fact that a lot of their cars these days are back to feeling cheap in some areas such as the windows buttons in the Jetta. I am not a fan of the new Tigs at all, and Golf is basically gone. As it stands now I am looking at other brands ONLY because of these factors. As for which generation I felt was the best I would go with the B6. My daughter had a B5.5 and it was super solid, but I like the length that the B6 gave.
Sean Woods As a wagon lover and owner of a 2014 JSW TDI, I’m REALLY disappointed that VW decided to discontinue the Golf Sportwagen and Alltrack - the only remaining affordable wagons on the market. And for what? So they could introduce that fugly crossover Atlas? As if we need ANOTHER crossover and SUV on the market. I know that’s where the demand is, but its annoying nonetheless. I’d rather gave the Tourag than that hideous Atlas (although I love the name, but find that styling too Jeep Cherokeesque).
@@clothestravel I could not agree more!! If I lived in the UK I would have my pick of cars that I would want to own, but being in the US market I am forced into cars that either unreliable or don't fit the styling I would like. I'm not young anymore nor am I super old. Give me a 2017 Passat touring and I good to go. I wouldn't mind a GTI but I need that little bit more space that the GSW brings. I could do a GSW but then I am forced to mod the thing to get the look I would want. Then I still wound have the GTI engine and suspension. So now I am forced to look at the BMW/Mini product line for my next car.
Camry has one touch for all windows. In addition, double wishbone suspension. Back windows go all the way down. Not all competitors do that. Hybrid synergy drive that does 52 MPG and the sporty Camry that does 46mpg, long lasting parts. Toyota is trying to inject more emotion into it's reliable cars. Hyundai / KIA/,Honda are responding bringing great choices for customers! VW has a chance to also bring a more competitive Passat to the midsize sedan class.
This might seem ridiculous, but I honestly feel that measuring glove boxes, center consoles, and storage compartments "in twinkies" is actually a REALLY good way to go about it, because I've had my fair share of twinkies in my teenage years to be familiar with their size, so telling me "you can fit 9 twinkies in there" makes Wayyy more sense than telling me, "oh yeah, that's about 0.9cubic feet of storage"
They used to have both struts to hold the hood up and an under insulator (this was struck from the list of standard equipment in mid-2017 model year production). They've cheapened the car over the years. Seems odd that they keep cheapening the car while not decreasing the price.
@bellski2002 My 2017 has no prop rod, but it does have a single gas strut. But, VW has changed the specs so many times on the Passat that I'm not surprised.
I have to give the Passat 2 zonks. One for not having a more powerful engine. The other is for those fake exhaust outlets. Come on VW. Hyundai/Kia are listening loud and clearly. Keep up the great work Joe. R.I.H. 8/24 & his baby girl Gianna🙏
Raiti's Rides They are giving us what people here are buying. This car is like the 2012-2019 Passat which was a good seller. The 2006-10 model was from Germany and the same as the Euro version and no one here bought it (except for me who had a 2007 Passat “Luxury”).
Because Americans have awful taste in cars. They’d rather have those ugly-as-sin coupe SUVS from the likes of BMW and Mercedes. Designs that are hideous abominations, in my opinion.
The refreshed Passat did not switch over to the MQB platform for cost reasons. It remains on the old PQ35 platform. This platforms older electrical architecture means the vehicle cannot support more modern infotainment systems and a full digital gage cluster. The 160 MPH speedo is stupid and is not achievable. It is nice that the rear seat passengers, unlike the Jetta, get HVAC vents at the rear of the center console. I personally like the look of this car, but the Accord is a better, if not the best value in this segment.
Not that you care 2 years later, but the 6.3 inch is the only offering available in the US and the SEL is the top trim available in the states. However the European version does have an 8inch options available. I had to do a decent amount of research to find that out.
Looks much better than both Accord and Camry. Against Mazda 6 is tie. Interior looks best in this class. For Japanese elegance and simplicity is secret not discovered yet.
I almost don't need to watch this video to know the answer, but going to watch for how cool you present things. I will never buy another German vehicle because of their notorious unreliability and high cost of maintenance out of warranty which impacts their resale value. The Accord is turbo and fun. The Camry is refined, and if they ever decide to add that 3.6 turbo AWD Platform to it, it will be the best selling car on the Planet.
Caribbean GTR I wouldn’t say the 4cyl Camry is quite as refined as the last generation Camry 4 cylinder mainly because of the engine noise. But if you’re comparing the Camry v6 to the last gen v6 Camry the current one w 300hp is way more refined
To all the people in the comment section talking shit (Especially Americans) the Passat is one of the most reliable vehicles ever made, the 2.5L 5 Cylinder(If it is available in your country) is bulletproof, mine has 320K Km and I only followed the maintenance schedule. The Camry and Accord are smaller inside, less comfortable, the quality of the materials is not as robust, the handling on the Passat is more precise, and after a few years the edgy Japanese designs will look silly while the German classic design will still be elegant.
Was at the auto show in my city and the VW section was almost entirely empty, rivaled by Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Honda, and Lexus were PACKED. Saw the Passat myself and it just looked boring to me. Knowing reliability too I just can’t ever see myself buying a VW until they become reliable like their Asian counterparts. Hard pass from me.
@@kenjkbs I am replying to the comment...Reliability might be a very important aspect for car owners(Toyota) but quality, driving dynamics, and ergonomics are as well(V.A.G) since both companies have dominated the market for the last years.
The only vehicles in VWs line up I’ll choose over Honda is in the Jetta and Golf line. I’m Accord all the way if I had to choose between it and the Passat.
I have a 2015 Passat Limited from Reeve's. The 2020 SEL seems nice. Honestly though, other than the passenger power seat and the soothing wood trim, there's not too much exciting features about it. Plus, they got rid of the damn clock! I'll stick with my 2015. Pretty sure the two drive and handle the same at this point despite the different platforms.
The reason VW only did a minor refresh on the US version of the 2020 Passat was to devote most of its R&D on the development of new SUV's and crossovers which is the segment US consumers have a complete hard on for at the moment. The Passat will live on as long as Toyota keeps churning out Camrys but a completely new Passat is probably at least a couple of years away.....possibly more if the COVID 19 thing drones on....
Hey, Joe please go over the sticker in your videos so we can pause and see what trim level it is and the exact MSRP price point with the exact features offered. Nice job with your back to back reviews keep it up.
Thanks alot for your very great reviews. How you can compare the steering of Passat to the one of Kia Cadenza 2019, which is more lighter and smoother? By the way I have Cadenza 2019 Thanks and kind regards
I currently have a 2014 Passat SE but I must say compared to how the Camry looks now. No way I’ll pick this over that for that 30k . It looks almost identical to what I urge now for interior
Thank the Lord this 2020 Passat doesn't have a CVT transmission, not hating on the CVT's but I'm glad this car has a good old automatic 6-speed!! 6-speed or 8-speed?
How was the turbo lag? Tested the T4 in 2019 & if bought I had to have the V6. They sold out of the V6s & I missed out. So over to Impala I went. Beige interior is nice in the sea of black & grey interiors.
Stephen DiBari I would buy a German car. Especially anything with that 2.0 turbo. A guy I work with has 200,000 kms on a 10 year old GTI. And a friend of mine has a 2012 A3 wagon with 200,000 kms. Both guys are anal about maintenance and it shows. Another buddy has an A6 with 250,000 kms on it and another buddy of mine had an A6 with 350,000 kms. The last 30,000 kms he was driving with a dying transmission. He was constantly doing Toronto to Atlanta road trips to see family.
I don't like VW's but in a segment where everything seems distastefully over-styled, I love the elegant and grown up look of the passat.I love that interior, it's so nice and clean. Those gauges suck. My 2019 Kia Forte has better gauges.
Volkswagen needs to trickle down some of Audi's design and performance to the Passat. The VW Golf R has a very similar interior as an Audi A3, especially the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system. This engine should be around 240hp at least with a 7 spd DCT perhaps for it to compare with the Accord, Camry, and Mazda6 in their highest trim specs.
lol, this review is funny to me cause it's so obvious VW put zero effort in their 2020 Passat. But Raiti sounds so happy to review it. Please, anyone, watch a review of Passat from 2012. You'll notice, the 2020 seems awfully familiar. This is a zero effort sedan from VW, almost seems they don't care. Cause at least the 2012 came with a V6 manual with some excitement, this inline 4 combined with it's uninspired interior, will do anything but excite you to drive it.
I just did some research. It’s basically the same car as 2019. It’s just been refreshed again. same interior dimensions, same wheelbase it slightly longer because of a redesigned rear and front facia
Why do automakers do fake exhaust tips? Do it like Tesla with nothing if they want to cut costs. I like functional tips and would never buy a car with fakes. Even the plain exhaust on my Sportwagen looks great. Cheers

The only thing the Camry has that I wanted which the Passat did not have is the panoramic roof.
@@direfranchement I appreciate you responding to my question so quickly. Camry is my favorite car because of long term reliability, comfortable , quiet car ride.
Concerns on the Passat is costs of repairs maintenance. Turbo usually not as reliable as naturally aspirated engines.
I do love the tail light designs also.
Thank you for the review 👍
Simple timeless design.
Love VW 😀
Thanks for letting me share this one with you!
European 1 but it looks a bit dated on the interior, the door panels and gadge cluster specifically.
MUSTASHEO lll that’s true!!
But exterior looks nice 👍
I hope they are going to work on interior more 😀
It feels better then optima, Altima, accord inside...they are like a toys...
Mann this car looks awesome to me .
Making me think about upgrading my 2000 Passat.
Thanks Jack! That was my today idea behind it and plus it is a lot more fun!
Thats all cars went downhill
Very traditional and beautiful design. Only for those who understand :)
Indeed. T4 gets a zonk though for lag. Why oh why did they ditch V6?
I have to give the Passat 2 zonks. One for not having a more powerful engine. The other is for those fake exhaust outlets. Come on VW. Hyundai/Kia are listening loud and clearly. Keep up the great work Joe. R.I.H. 8/24 & his baby girl Gianna🙏
New Corolla has 120 hp but is far slower than Volkswagen with 100 hp
It’s not on MQB unfortunately still on PQ35 like the previous version and the previous Jetta.
Nope the 2012 and newer Passats are on the NMS (New Midsize Sedan) platform that was specifically designed for the North American market.
Joe I really like your reviews, very straight to point but still informative. Keep up the good work!
Raiti’s rides needs to be sponsored by twinkies!!
If i ever saw a Twinkie ad at the start of the vid i think i might die laughing. 😂
Now we are talking!
@@moflow99 I know right!
Why can’t we get the European Passat. It’s so much better than the American version!
We get all the watered down stuff.
Raiti's Rides They are giving us what people here are buying. This car is like the 2012-2019 Passat which was a good seller. The 2006-10 model was from Germany and the same as the Euro version and no one here bought it (except for me who had a 2007 Passat “Luxury”).
Cuz American do like small cars, they want those big ass trucks
Because Americans have awful taste in cars. They’d rather have those ugly-as-sin coupe SUVS from the likes of BMW and Mercedes. Designs that are hideous abominations, in my opinion.
But I like your reviews,Joe, pretty much!! Thank you from Ukraine!!
My wife drives a 2018 SEL Premium. I drive a 2020 SE w/Technology Atlas. My daughter drives a 2018 V6 Atlas.
Thanks for sharing that great input!
Subaru is designing cars I like. You get a lot for the money have two Volkswagens and an Outback. Love both manufacturers.
There is no stop start feature on the 2020 Passat. I own one. That’s why I bought one. No stop start silliness
That is wonderful! I can not stand those in today's cars!
NMS platform not PQ35.
SEL is the top trim, and I believe the 6.4" center screen is the only one offered. Is there an optional larger screen?
Not that you care 2 years later, but the 6.3 inch is the only offering available in the US and the SEL is the top trim available in the states. However the European version does have an 8inch options available. I had to do a decent amount of research to find that out.
I think the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is more upscaled than this Passat lol. Hyundai has really been on top of their game!
Big time!
This car has One of the longest non-hybrid gas ranges: 36 highway mpg x 18.5 gallon gas tank = up to 666 miles on a tank!
Camry’s the better looking car and better mechanically by far.
AGREED!
Janet Rohrbaugh TOYOTA 💯
Have you drive the accord yet?
As a die hard Volkswagener, o choose my brand
Janet Rohrbaugh it’s not a bad car, it’s just behind in tech and looks a bit dated inside with the door panels and gadge cluster.
Looks much better than both Accord and Camry. Against Mazda 6 is tie. Interior looks best in this class. For Japanese elegance and simplicity is secret not discovered yet.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.
Silver N Black Mopar the car in yo profile pic is fugly
To all the people in the comment section talking shit (Especially Americans) the Passat is one of the most reliable vehicles ever made, the 2.5L 5 Cylinder(If it is available in your country) is bulletproof, mine has 320K Km and I only followed the maintenance schedule. The Camry and Accord are smaller inside, less comfortable, the quality of the materials is not as robust, the handling on the Passat is more precise, and after a few years the edgy Japanese designs will look silly while the German classic design will still be elegant.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspective on this one!
This car still exists 😱 my brother had one way back in 2006
Was at the auto show in my city and the VW section was almost entirely empty, rivaled by Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Honda, and Lexus were PACKED. Saw the Passat myself and it just looked boring to me. Knowing reliability too I just can’t ever see myself buying a VW until they become reliable like their Asian counterparts. Hard pass from me.
only in the USA, Volkswagen and Toyota are the biggest car manufacturers in the world.
@@jpch8814 right, you see more Toyota and vw in other part of the world then any manufacturers
Gm once was the biggest in the world. Was it reliable? No! Not relevant.
@@kenjkbs I am replying to the comment...Reliability might be a very important aspect for car owners(Toyota) but quality, driving dynamics, and ergonomics are as well(V.A.G) since both companies have dominated the market for the last years.
Joe this is not on the MQB platform, but instead it’s still on the same PQ46 platform from 2012.
Nope it's on the NMS platform.

At 32 K it’s going to be hard to compete with Honda and Toyota . I had a TDI Passat and it was awesome!
That is so a very good point Fernando!
Always a great review!!! 👍🏼💯
The only vehicles in VWs line up I’ll choose over Honda is in the Jetta and Golf line. I’m Accord all the way if I had to choose between it and the Passat.
This guy always putting candy in the car and twinkies 😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉❤
I have a 2015 Passat Limited from Reeve's. The 2020 SEL seems nice. Honestly though, other than the passenger power seat and the soothing wood trim, there's not too much exciting features about it. Plus, they got rid of the damn clock! I'll stick with my 2015. Pretty sure the two drive and handle the same at this point despite the different platforms.
Lol, nice try. We saw that police car enter the highway at 15:45 🤣
Good eyes!
Thanks for that great input and perspective!
Seems like the Jetta GLI is a better value - maybe a bit smaller but you get more bang for your buck
Excellent car ! Go VW Passat!
Hey, Joe please go over the sticker in your videos so we can pause and see what trim level it is and the exact MSRP price point with the exact features offered. Nice job with your back to back reviews keep it up.
That's a good idea Scott! Thanks for the feedback and support!
NO!!!! Even asking such a question is pointless.
The grille is a direct copy from Honda Crosstour.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks alot for your very great reviews. How you can compare the steering of Passat to the one of Kia Cadenza 2019, which is more lighter and smoother?
By the way I have Cadenza 2019
Thanks and kind regards
Oddly, I like this Passat how it sits on the older platform. Simple design and not overly complicated. What did you think of the comfort level?
I currently have a 2014 Passat SE but I must say compared to how the Camry looks now. No way I’ll pick this over that for that 30k .
It looks almost identical to what I urge now for interior
Thank the Lord this 2020 Passat doesn't have a CVT transmission, not hating on the CVT's but I'm glad this car has a good old automatic 6-speed!! 6-speed or 8-speed?
It's okay to hate CVTs. They suck, lol.
I totally agree with you Bennie.
@@chigasaki06 LMAO!
CVT is for mammie's gay boys
I like it......do one for the arteon.
Will do my friend!
I really like the outside but the inside was surprising because they didn’t do anything
How was the turbo lag? Tested the T4 in 2019 & if bought I had to have the V6. They sold out of the V6s & I missed out. So over to Impala I went. Beige interior is nice in the sea of black & grey interiors.
Solid car, but too conservative compared to new Sonata and K5.
If it’s only lasts like a Camry and accord. Then yes many will buy.
Wow it is so different in America
I know right!
I wish they could make all Volkswagens the same for the different markets
Great review Joe as always.. you know how i feel about German cars. LEASE them BUY Japanese! Empty $ pits as they age with high mileage.
You are so very right Stephen. I don't think I would lease or buy this. LOL
Ugh but their so awssome tho japanese vehicles r too small for me couldn't even fit in the accord
Raiti's Rides 😂
@@andrewwhite103 Well certainly a Passat wouldn't fit you either then. Nor a BMW 5 series, or MB E-class.
Nice job Joe!!!
Thanks Louis!
We get a different Passat in Europe. In China, this is called the Magotan. Chinese Passats are the same as the American Passat.
I don't like VW's but in a segment where everything seems distastefully over-styled, I love the elegant and grown up look of the passat.I love that interior, it's so nice and clean. Those gauges suck. My 2019 Kia Forte has better gauges.
Thanks for sharing that great input and perspective!
Raiti's Rides you’re welcome 😊
Hey my brother checking in
It wouldn't be the same without you.
RIP Kobe Bryant
AMEN my friend.
The proprod is better you don’t had to ever pay for hood shocks as they wear
Out and you have to pay for that
SEL is the top trim.
I thought SEL was the top VW trim.
It is. The reviewer doesn't know what he's talking about.
Sel always has fogs, so this can't be sel
6.3" screen is all that's available!!
I know right!
8. something is also available as you go up the trim levels
lol, this review is funny to me cause it's so obvious VW put zero effort in their 2020 Passat.
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
Cheers
I totally agree with you!
Oooof... Sorry VW. Not a big fan of that interior design. I can't say I'd take a Camry or the Accord either. I'm more of an SUV guy myself 😂
Great vid, Joe!
I totally agree with you Victor!
My 2017 SE w/Tech has the hood struts. They must have been trying to cut costs on later model years. Too bad.
