yeah because comparing the Passat to its class, the Accord and Camry, is the equivalent to throwing it into a tank full of sharks, it stands no chance lol
I got a European Passat station wagon made in Emden, Germany and I love it. 90% of them are station wagons here. It's got a 7 speed dual clutch transmission, a 2 liter ad blue diesel engine that needs fuel every 1000 miles and it's never let me down whether it is on long family trips or while commuting to work. You can go 120 mph on the Autobahn easily without it starting to feel wobbly, it's planted like a brick. All in all, I agree, it's not an exciting car but it is a safe and reliable daddy-mobile :) keep making awesome videos, stay safe and stay healthy! Much love from Germany!
@@ichliebefettekatzen1492 different car as the arteon also exists in Europe, though both the European Passat and the arteon are on the emp2 modular platform which the American Passat is not on.
Pretty much sums up the American auto market as a whole. A sea of white, black and silver trucks and SUVs all with automatic transmissions as the only option. Oh how I wish we could just buy any car we want from around the world and have it shipped to the US...
The Passat is a super comfortable cruiser. It’s a classy, elegant ride w/ some nice German premium touches. It has plenty of passing power, it’s planted to the road, and has a nicely tuned suspension for smoothness/comfort. I drive my camaro for fun and drive the Passat as a nice daily. I’ve always appreciated what the Passat offered and tried to accomplish in comparison to its competition. Also, you’re really getting a full size sedan for mid size money with a great warranty. The backseat and trunk are massive.
The 2020 corolla sedans the L models thats what they feel like, multi link independent rear suspension feels planted to the ground but as for the interior lol you just wanna sleep but the most important thing is it gets the job done efficiently for what it can do lol
The only thing that would have saved this car is the V6 option, which is not available anymore. You're better getting a slightly older used Passat V6 or CC, which has a V6 and 4motion.
The people who buy a Passat are in the market for a larger midsize sedan but don’t want: The Maxima: For the Gym, Tan, Laundry, Nightclub types The Camry/Avalon: Almost retired, 3 bd Raised Ranch w/wall to wall shag carpeting. Take off your shoes before stepping in The Accord: it’s perfect but it’s not German. The Mazda 6: Also almost perfect but it’s too small and styled a little too hip for their sterile engineering tastes. The Passat: Likes minimalist contemporary design, Wassa bread, Moline notepads, NPR
Local dealer has a couple of new leftover 2020 Passat SEL Premiums for $25,000. I'm seriously considering one. I just need something roomy (I'm 6'3"), quiet and comfortable for long trips that's well equipped. I don't think I can find anything that fits that bill better for the price. There's no way I'd pay $33,000 for one when it was the current year, but discounted this much for a new one still sitting on the lot, yeah, I might.
I had three Passats for 15 years and I can tell you yes, it is simply too boring looking on outside for me. and I don''t go out and buy white bread, unless it's for my 86 year old father.
Within the past 10 years I’ve owned a brand new Mazda 6, which felt a little like a modern bmw dare I say, a brand new Camry, Subaru Legacy and a Honda Accord not to mention my other vehicles being a jaguar xe and an Alfa Romeo guilia. With that being said I also currently own a 2019 Passat that I picked up recently and picked this car to buy over the other competition because I have also owned a 2010 Passat which I loved. Which I why I decided to get another one. The Passat is a wonderfully designed car that has a feel of refinement that you just can’t get with the competition. This car definitely still hold it’s own with nothing to prove with a dying sedan segment. Yeah, it’s on the bland side which I absolutely love and means it will age gracefully. It drives magnificently with zero drama and everything is well thought out in the vehicle and very buttoned down. Wonderful review gooser.. and a wonderful classy car.
I have been watching your reviews for a few years, I have driven the competitors for this vehicle and when you're looking at a practical buying experience, the Camry has a stiff suspension and plastic looking interior, the accord is more expensive to insure than an Audi. I recently when on a road trip with this car and it was really impressive how it simply DIDNT detract from the long scenic driving experience, where other cars would with some kind of flaw whether it be road noise, suspension stiffness, gas consumption etc.
"It's borderline stale white bread." Sometimes that's all people want, need and can afford. If you just need to go from point A to point B, in relative comfort, it's perfect. I sometimes feel reviewers are expecting more than they should. Sometimes a vehicle is exactly what it should be... white bread.
Reviewers are the equivalent of people who couldn't manage expectations early in life but somehow think their opinions, while subjective and heard because of the internet, are somehow objective and above reproach.
I have this car rn and it’s honestly the perfect sedan for someone that doesn’t care much about their car but still wants something stylish and somewhat smart compared to say a Japanese or American car.
Mgoblagulkablong well first we need to come to the conclusion that you know all the alternative definitions of the word smart. Smart meaning attractive in a non showy way.
egor like well pal in 20 years when we look back at these cars certain cars will still be attractive or atleast still look good while others will be outdated and too over styled to stand the test of time. Japanese sedans don’t tend to be too stylish in the long run.
Can´t get that it´s cheaper for VW to build an America specific Passat when they have a different but much better one in Europe that would probably sell well over here...
Because of import tariffs, they would have to make another set of new tooling for the factory in the US. Also the US car is bigger, cushier and more cheaply made and priced -- in line with the preferences of US buyers. In Europe, VW have Skoda and SEAT brands for the more basic cars.
I'm an old dude, so I like conservative styling and prefer the sedan form to a coupe. But the Passat looks drab even to me. However, I certainly prefer its looks over the new Sonata, for example. To me, the epitome of automotive excellence is a sport sedan. And by sport sedan I mean the version of 20 years ago, not the track cars of today. A balance of ride comfort, handling, and some pep. In other words, a daily driver that is comfortable on long trips, but has enough sport to entice you to take the back roads home. Sounds like VW has abandoned that ideal with the Passat and made a generic commuter car.
A red VW Passat B3 CL Variant was our first family car after the reunification of Eastern Germany with the West. That car was a leapfrog forward from the Trabant and Lada we had before and as a kid I loved it. So Passat will never seem boring to me.
AdriannnTRD AdriannnTRD I see what you’re trying to say, but that’s not quite right and really, it just seeks to excuse VW’s laziness and penny-pinching for the US market. The EU Passat was given a mild facelift too for 2020 and its’ levels of refinement and quietness are regularly compared favourably with the luxury marques. It is certainly lighter, but FAR more rigid torsionally and for bending than the US Passat platform, which as the reviewer says, was designed over 10 years ago. MQB May be boring, but it’s probably the best-engineered global-architecture around, save maybe for Toyota’s new TNG.
We get the European Passat. its' called the Arteon. and I would recommend this Passat over it. If you want the additional power than by all means get the Arteon but the Passat actually seems better built.
@@gerhardjinks6581 yes, but Arteon is a higher up model and being so it's price makes it not competitive in midsize sedan segment, leaving it to be a niche product :(
I own an ‘09 Jetta and this review is spot on. To me, many of the VWs are nothing more than a family oriented, daily driver, and good mpg car. Nothing inspiring about the interior and exterior. From my experience, it shines within its reliability. It has nothing more to give than that.
You'd be surprised at how many people just want a safe, reliable, comfortable and practical car to take them from A to B. My wife has the current EU Passat, company car. Looks good to me, far better than the NA new model. I've driven this thing on holidays with the kids and a full trunk. Super comfortable for long motorway journeys with driving assistance (adaptative cruise control is great). The infotainment is good. Would I chose this over my E92 330i (N52 NA 6 cyl 272hp with sport suspension) or harsh riding SEAT Leon CupraR, both for a bit of fun and involvement? Of course not, on short trips anyway, like daily commute to work or a spirited drive at the weekend. However, on long journeys with kids the Passat has proved me it is a better solution and better value proposition if I had to buy one. I don't look for excitement in this scenario. Comfort, practicality, driving assistance, decent looks in the EU model. The angle in your review is kind of wrong to me. Looking for excitement in an affordable family saloon?
I have driven these vehicles and I own a 2010 Passat, which is the last year of the B6 model. This guy described my experience with this car perfectly. The B6 is far more engaging while still providing plenty of comfort.
Before watching the video, I knew exactly how you would review this car. Yes, it's boring. But for seniors or folks past middle age, it's a great choice. They like more simple interiors with less electronic gizmo's. For them it's one to consider for sure.
I had a 2013 VR6 for 5 years and loved it. The motor was great and paired well with the DSG and though it wasn't flashy, I thought it looked good with the lip spoiler, dual exhaust and premium pack wheels. Looks like they've stripped all of the above for this model, so I'd have to agree with you. There's not much left in it to talk about.
Both my brothers have owned one of these, and they both really liked them. Acceleration was good, especially for a long commute that requires assertive driving in NYC. So... 🤷♂️
This is so funny! Love your reviews man. So much better than all the magazine reviews. Love how you stay very realistic on the expectations of the vehicle and who could potentially buy them.
This is that generic car you see walking around in a call of duty map. I’ll tell you what this vehicle is- purely a point A to point B car. That is it. It is a reinforced tuna can on wheels. Neutral. Beige. Neither good, nor bad. A vehicle. It could be argued bad, could be argued good.
This is a great everyday driver that gives you confidence and ease to go through your day and do what you need with a feeling that it is not going to attract any unwanted attention and less prone to break on you like more gadget filled cars.
when you think of it it's an elegant nice car. nothing too fancy, nothing too weird, nothing too much. just enough to ride in comfort. obviously it's not for the car enthusiasts.
The only thing weird about car enthusiasts doing car reviews is that they are always disappointed unless the car is amazing, exciting, extremely fast, excellent sound system and they completely forget that many people just view vehicles as appliances to get them to their destination and don’t have the same concerns. I don’t know why this is such a hard concept to grasp.
I was going to say that since this is a seven year old platform, it's more like stale white bread, but then you beat me to it! One advantage to this that is apparent from looking at the underpinnings, is that you could probably rebuild the entire suspension for about a grand, if you did the work yourself. There's something to be said for that, and it's very VW-like. Looking at some of the newer multilink suspensions makes me shudder at the thought of replacing all those arms and ball joints. Thanks for doing what you do. Nobody else is showing us the underside of new cars, and I, for one, appreciate it!
Great points. Bought a 2019 R-Line new at $25K and a six year warranty and 30+MPG on regular gas. Great car given the aforementioned. Owned MBZ's, BMW's, American muscle, etc. This one fits all the daily needs = covered. Opens up opportunity for fun 2nd car (Miata, etc, etc.)
Is it wrong I like the styling of this car even though everything you pointed out. The Passat GT was a cool trim that VW only made for a limited run in 2017-2018. Which was probably the exciting version lol. As always your videos are great and I love the humor you and the others inject in your reviews.
I agree. I drive the GT. I can't understand why they made it for only a limited run. It's a great option - makes my commute fun and gives my kids in the back loads of foot-clearance from the front seat so that they can't kick me when I blast my 90s grunge and rap.
I really like this car but I'm as conservative as they come when it comes to cars. This would have been my choice but my wife really wanted AWD so we got a 2020 Subaru Legacy.
I always love the camera work and the fine choice of music in this channel. As for the car, well, I'll say this: Foreign car companies make the same mistakes. When they design for the local market, they go native and end up with a product that looks and feels like a domestic product. They forget that the locals love their products in the first place because of their distinctive, foreign design. My advice is for the Japanese and German companies to shutdown their design studios in North America and sell us the same products they sell in their home countries. Obviously, the market for Japanese Kei cars may be limited here. But, I for one, would prefer a European Passat than one numbed down for NA.
I own a 2015 Passat. Although there isn't huge changes for 2020 except trims pieces inside & out, I think the Passat is a comfortable vehicle. Has a smooth ride and definitely has a European ride to it.
Yeah it looks extremely similar to the 2016-2019 passat. Only major difference in the interior I can see is the air vents. The rear end looks a bit better but the front end looks worse imo

yeah, from the 1997-2001 camry lol
I don't understand why everyone harps on the looks of this thing. The 2020 got a little funky but I think the 2016-2019 R-Line is classically beautiful (especially in black). See one in person and decide for yourself.
Passat; adult styling
New civic; designed by a 18 yr old
yeah because comparing the Passat to its class, the Accord and Camry, is the equivalent to throwing it into a tank full of sharks, it stands no chance lol
@@mehsomething Also, the passat is boring and unreliable.
More like by a 13 year old. The passat looks like designed by AI with zero human input.
which is why i see very few 18 year olds driving civics?
So true...
All in all, I agree, it's not an exciting car but it is a safe and reliable daddy-mobile :)
keep making awesome videos, stay safe and stay healthy! Much love from Germany!
The Euro passat running leaps around this indeed
Isn't the US version of the EU Passat the Arteon of whatever they call it?
@@ichliebefettekatzen1492 different car as the arteon also exists in Europe, though both the European Passat and the arteon are on the emp2 modular platform which the American Passat is not on.
@@user-kw9qu2gz8v arteon has pretty much the same interior as the eu passat
Ich Liebe Fette Katzen no you can get the arteon in the us is the replacement for the cc
Ich Liebe Fette Katzen no no no....the Arteon is its own car...
Lol. Love the sarcastic moments, and tart observations. Turns out you were spot on, but they did let the name go here in the US.
Clearly the car was no longer a priority here.
The first 3 minutes made me feel like Mark had some videotapes to return.
Pretty much sums up the American auto market as a whole. A sea of white, black and silver trucks and SUVs all with automatic transmissions as the only option. Oh how I wish we could just buy any car we want from around the world and have it shipped to the US...
Mazda 6 any day over this
They stopped producing the 2.4 4x4 stick shift in 2017. Rip! 😥
The people who buy a Passat are in the market for a larger midsize sedan but don’t want:
The Maxima: For the Gym, Tan, Laundry, Nightclub types
The Camry/Avalon: Almost retired, 3 bd Raised Ranch w/wall to wall shag carpeting. Take off your shoes before stepping in
The Accord: it’s perfect but it’s not German.
The Mazda 6: Also almost perfect but it’s too small and styled a little too hip for their sterile engineering tastes.
The Passat: Likes minimalist contemporary design, Wassa bread, Moline notepads, NPR
You did the last gen passat with the V6. Would you still buy that one over this?
YES, anyone would
Local dealer has a couple of new leftover 2020 Passat SEL Premiums for $25,000.
My GLi was very reliable, i miss it now, Passat does look bland though, but i guess some people like that
I had three Passats for 15 years and I can tell you yes, it is simply too boring looking on outside for me. and I don''t go out and buy white bread, unless it's for my 86 year old father.
I mean, apart from the W8, the Passat was always boring lmao
"Where the Hood At" by DMX on the stereo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
the exact opposit of this car lol
I’m a hardcore VW enthusiast and I would easily pass on the US-spec Passat. The Accord and Mazda6 are the top players for me
2:45 The blandness of the car made this man has lost his mind so badly he might go RCR
"It's borderline stale white bread."
Sometimes that's all people want, need and can afford.
White bread tastes better than whole grain anyway.
The point is that for the same amount of money (over 30k $) you can get way way better cars...in every conceivable measurement: design, tech and all.
@@SpaghettiKillah a loaded top trim Passat is barely 30K.
SpaghettiKillah
Exactly, the point is that you can buy a Passat that isn’t tech heavy and have a quiet, comfortable, point A to B car
Why do people hate on this it’s gorgeous 😍
I have this car rn and it’s honestly the perfect sedan for someone that doesn’t care much about their car but still wants something stylish and somewhat smart compared to say a Japanese or American car.
How is this more stylish or smart then anything japanese/american or even korean. Lol
How is this "smart", what a dumb comment.
@@Mgoblagulkablong freaking hipsters lol
Mgoblagulkablong well first we need to come to the conclusion that you know all the alternative definitions of the word smart. Smart meaning attractive in a non showy way.
egor like well pal in 20 years when we look back at these cars certain cars will still be attractive or atleast still look good while others will be outdated and too over styled to stand the test of time. Japanese sedans don’t tend to be too stylish in the long run.
Thinking about trading my Accord 1.5 for a Passat. Would that be a mistake?
Can´t get that it´s cheaper for VW to build an America specific Passat when they have a different but much better one in Europe that would probably sell well over here...
Because of import tariffs, they would have to make another set of new tooling for the factory in the US. Also the US car is bigger, cushier and more cheaply made and priced -- in line with the preferences of US buyers. In Europe, VW have Skoda and SEAT brands for the more basic cars.
Where the hood at?
Still more exciting than most cross-overs.....
That is definitely true
My European Passat is so much better
HOLY HELL finally! I thought this was the next scotty kilmer channel with all the toyotas you were doing.
A red VW Passat B3 CL Variant was our first family car after the reunification of Eastern Germany with the West. That car was a leapfrog forward from the Trabant and Lada we had before and as a kid I loved it. So Passat will never seem boring to me.
Pity you dont get the EU Passat. Its so sexy outside (especially wagon) and interior looks much better. And it also on MQB platform
Thankfully its NOT mqb, lighter and louder. We Americans actually love the tight heft, sterile styling and Really good suspension.
Volkswagen have always made the most practical and erginomical cars
When a car company aspires to build rental cars or cars for our parents.
the german altima/malibu
This review feels like the partner to RCR's reviews. RCR describes the car and its potential owner, and you act out the car and its potential owner.
It'd be hard for me to pick this over the Accord, that's for sure. Still looks good at least.
Daily Motor only a maniac would get this over the accord
@@chocolatewheelchair Hello from a maniac, test drove both at dealer and it is a much more pleasant car than the CVT accords.
Gerhard Jinks haha didn’t mean you personally but what aspects are better in the VW? Ride quality?
@@JonDoe-dt9uz No, sadly the CVT is avaliable on the LX, Sport, EX and EX-L. But all except the LX can come with a Manual or 10 Speed.

Looking for excitement in an affordable family saloon?
everyone misses the B5 Passat. until we get a great one again, we’ll be buying Jettas instead.
Tanner Whitney I miss the B6. Had a 2009. Car had to be totaled out after 9 years :(
I hear ya. My 2004 B5.5 was still in great shape and going strong until it got totaled a couple years ago. Heartbreaking stuff.
@@tannerwhitney how many miles did you have on it?
omg the intro and interior impressions super calm/average monologue is great!
I miss the stalker/hater montage that would sometimes come at the end. Great reviews
I have driven these vehicles and I own a 2010 Passat, which is the last year of the B6 model. This guy described my experience with this car perfectly. The B6 is far more engaging while still providing plenty of comfort.
You look 15 years older while driving the Passat
So he looks 70?
Before watching the video, I knew exactly how you would review this car. Yes, it's boring. But for seniors or folks past middle age, it's a great choice. They like more simple interiors with less electronic gizmo's. For them it's one to consider for sure.
The shots almost make the car look interesting.
Good video. It exemplifies the two major reasons why I subscribe : the technical insights and the perspectives provided.
Everything works..........for now.
0:07 - 0:17 If you know savagegeese, you already know this car is a bore and Mark doesn't care for it. 😂
The intro and interior deserve an Oscar! I love it!
A vehicle. It could be argued bad, could be argued good.
that's basically 90% of all cars
This is a great everyday driver that gives you confidence and ease to go through your day and do what you need with a feeling that it is not going to attract any unwanted attention and less prone to break on you like more gadget filled cars.
Pity the fools who think that VW is a 'premium brand'.
VW fanboys are the worst.
This would have been a GREAT angle for this review. The Passat - when you want to pretend you have an A6.
Fiat practically owned Ferrari once, but that never made a Punto like a Modena.
Sometimes the VW buyer tries to convince himself he has a cut price Audi.
when you think of it it's an elegant nice car. nothing too fancy, nothing too weird, nothing too much. just enough to ride in comfort. obviously it's not for the car enthusiasts.
Yeap! Specially women...they just want a car that takes them from point A to B without stranding them in the middle of the road.
Passat without TDI engine is not real Passat.
I’m an audiophile, Can you do some hi end home audio reviews.
Maybe on Wednesdays.
So it looks new but will have cheap old parts.
that will cost you a lot if one of those break.
Saitara I’ve had several of these, you are wrong.
German cars are hit or miss from what I hear..reliability heavily depends on regular service being done religiously on time.
"At the end of the day, I like to put my foot on the dead pedal--it's comfortable." I'm dead
I really like this car but I'm as conservative as they come when it comes to cars. This would have been my choice but my wife really wanted AWD so we got a 2020 Subaru Legacy.
Good choice
Better choice IMO. Especially with the recent Subaru interior improvements.
We are living in the age that Jetta and Passat are more boring than Camry and Corolla... Hyunda/KIA is the new VW.
The rear end looks a bit better but the front end looks worse imo
why buy this while Elantra exsists?
