Arthur Ashe "Women Don't Deserve The Same Amount Of Prize Money As Men" | The Dick Cavett Show

  • American tennis player Arthur Ashe discusses the gender pay gap in tennis and how he believes women don't deserve the same amount of prize money as men in 1980. He explains how he believes the salary of a player is valued according to the amount of entertainment they bring to the sport, rather than their ability or skill to play. As in entertainment, where a bigger star would be paid more for a performance than a newcomer, he concludes men should be paid more (at that time) due to their bigger box office appeal over women.

Woman tennis is less attractive because women are less agile than men. It's still true today as it was back then. However, there is no room today to even hold such an opinion. Political correctness has erased all non-egalitarian viewpoints.

@@Kaitain I believe what Ashe was saying was that because men's tennis was more entertaining than the women's game (in 1980), that meant there were more eyeballs glued to TV sets and more fans at the matches to watch the men, in comparison to the women. And he was right. More TV viewers and more fans in the stands translates into more advertising and gate revenue, and because of that, the men should be paid accordingly. It comes down to commerce. Chris Evert was a great player, but she was boring to watch with her baseline game to even the casual fan.
As far as Sinatra vs the Carpenters, entertainment has nothing to do with it, although fans for both I'm sure their fans were certainly entertained at their concerts. It's about supply and demand, and what fans were prepared to pay to watch either perform.

You missed the point, possibly didn't even watch the whole video, and reacted like any other woke person. Ashe was talking about tennis as an attraction since ladies like King, Evert, Navratalova, Graf, Hingis for a bit, and Serena enter a tournament knowing they're way better than any woman. While in men's tour... Connors, Borg, Lendl, McEnroe, Becker, Sampras, Agassi, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic all played in eras where they know they could lose as early as the 1st round and that makes a tournament more watchable so more people would pay to see them battle than watch some girl get helplessly dominated by the same players.

Things have changed so much in the women's game. I would say the box office for women in Tennis has increased incredibly over the years. I only watch women's tennis because I prefer a best of 3 over best of 5. Serena and Naomi and incredible talents. I understand the argument about 3 sets is fewer than 5 so women shouldn't be paid as much. But, selfishly, I wouldn't want the women to go to best of 5 because I prefer a 1.5-2 hour match over a 3-4 hour match

    • @user-yp3oj5se1i
      @user-yp3oj5se1i 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You would say the women's box office in tennis has increased incredibly since? When people used the phrase "i would say" they are also telling us that they don't know otherwise they would simply tell us how much the box office increase has been. It's probably increased like most other sports as the population grows more people/bigger audiences. The men's tennis has also increased and the women haven't become faster/more skillfull than men
I don't believe you don't watch any men's tennis. They women do play fewer sets and the audience decide in a monetary environment/marketplace to watch men's tennis more then women's. That's two reasons why women earn less than men in tennis. There are no genuine women or men asking for women to get more money then they can achieve themselves in sports.

I pack shipments for a large corporation. As far as I understand there is no economic incentive for me to pack fast. In fact, almost once a week our hours are cut short because we meet goals and have to leave enough shipments for next shift. So if I work double the minimum rate, I'm losing hours and getting paid 1/2 per packed box as someone who worked the minimum.
So at first glance I would support merit based pay.
What I wonder is - do the capitalist corporate executives at my company who would support merit based pay for women's sports, support it for me? Maybe they would if they could but the commie liberals won't let them?
Or maybe they support this non merit based system when it comes to me because it keeps down their labor costs? (In lieu of paying you for your productivity, They use all these interesting psychological methods to increase productivity - i.e. telling you your rate and your rank every hour, and giving you "points" that buy essentially nothing.)
Point is - I wonder if people pick and choose when they support meritocracy?
Maybe I agree with paying us all the same? maybe the conservative executives would support a more merit based pay but can't enact it? Or maybe they support this forced economic equality for their bottom employees while talking about merit for things like women's sports, women executives?

ff women want to be paid the same amount of prize money as men then it's high time they had to play the best of 5 sets instead of 3, at least at Wimbledon and other majors. There's utterly no reason why women should play the best of 3, apart from the usual 'that's the way it's always been', which is no reason at all. Women have just as much stamina and staying power as men, even more in some cases, so it's being patronising to think they can't last 5 sets. There are women who can run 100 miles in one day or something ridiculous like that so I'm sure they can play for 3 or 4 hours. And I think it would make the women's game more entertaining.

"deserve"...is the problem.....it immediately argues against equality....what he should have argued is...sports like entertainment...etc..are subject to sponsors...ads and the drawing power of the person...so that is what determines compensation...could he argue a woman didn't deserve MORE money..if circumstances warranted it?
Ashe does not sound very intelligent....though he seems awfully assured of what he is saying....need an example?....Cavett says margarine has the same issues as butter...he responds... you have to eat something...well..if that's the case...WHY NOT just stick to the butter?
lol..the answer is you don't eat either of them.....dead at 50...

You’re not a very good listener. That’s exactly what he argued. And there’s nothing wrong with the word “deserve” in this context. Of course it argues against equality because for the reasons he outlined the women at the time didn’t deserve equal pay. You’re the one that doesn’t sound intelligent. No one’s perfect but he’s correct here.

Jade Zee You are the one who sounds unintelligent. Ashe is simply speaking facts and logic. When you generate more money you will deserve to be paid more. Why is that such a hard concept for you to understand? Plus he said he ate margarine instead of butter because of the diet he was on not because margarine was necessarily a lot healthier than butter. Also he died because he got AIDS from a blood transfusion. You dont listen or use logic very well SMH

Know this. I would never expect to be paid for a bake failure because me just no can do. That's my excuse to go to the local truck stop to pick up the best homemade pies & cookies in town.
People should know what they are good at and be paid based on the final product.
