A Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan on 03JULY2024

- This morning's California Zephyr #5 arrived in Fort Morgan at 0653 MDT (1 Hr. & 7 Min. late due to more heavy weather east of here). Powering the 8-car consist were P42s #169 & #155. They brought the train to a stop with car 7 to the station platform for passenger service to 3 departing passengers and then 5 new patrons boarded for trips west.
With the station work safely completed, the high ball was given and on a clear signal, the Zephyr continued its westward trek with the next station stop being Union Station in Denver.

Good afternoon Mike. Thanks for another good one. I don't know how you manage to be there on time every day. For many years I started work at 6:00 AM but since being retired, there is no way I could force myself to get up that early every day. You have my admiration. Thanks and have a great day.
Good afternoon, Lou; I thank you for dialing in along with the comments. I can thank the many years of service in the Navy. I learned to be up at 0330 to travel to the ship, work all day and then travel home to be in bed for sleep around 2000 (8 PM). Same held true when at sea. The evening movie was over with around 2000, there wasn't anything else to watch so climb into the rack and read myself to sleep. Still do. It is one of the habits I have not broken myself of. Did the same while working at Western Sugar here in Ft Morgan. Although I worked a rotating shift, I followed the same routine. Now, the first run TV stuff I watch is over at 2000 and the rerun for the west coast begins.
I wasn't a morning person until I went to boot camp. That made a major change in my lifestyle. LOL!
Anyway. It is all fun for me to watch the Zephyr come thru town. I consider myself luck in that I live at a station stop for the train.

After seeing our weather yesterday, creating havoc about the time the Zephyr was supposed to be in that area, I wondered if it would be delayed.
Our fireworks and airshow are tonight. People love being on their boats and watching them over the river. Today the Coast Guard prohibited boats on the river for the show. The Mississippi is so swollen and angry, and has so much debris floating down, they deemed it unsafe. Plus they figured some of the channel marking buoys have moved. Everything they predict the staging, up north, or we get more rain, so they push it out another day.
Anyway, she made it!

Good evening, Jean; I thank you for dialing in as well as the comments. There is still a lot of standing water in many places along the Zephyr route. Wish there was some out here.
I saw the portable flood barriers were in place at Burlington. That river water did look mean and ugly with a lot of debris. I am hearing the same about the Missouri. The South Platte has about 2 gallons of water in it right now as the runoff is more or less over. I don't think the USCG will send a boat up from the Missouri River to check it out though. LOL!

Good afternoon Mike from 88 mid Tenn heading to 95. Oh to stay inside with AC. The conductor needs a refresher course in " passenger assistance" . He handled baggage pretty good but not so good with people especially seniors or those who obviously needed some assistance. Oh well, maybe he's a newbie or just not adequately trained. Stay healthy to enjoy our country's birthday tomorrow. May we never forget what we have to celebrate.

The first patron was another entitled person with a nose very high in the air. He may have been a bit frustrated but seemed to handle it all in stride. I did notice the gentleman had a walker type boot in wear. The person I didn't see was the car attendant who should have been there to assist. Oh well.
I hope that you are able to stay in the A/C back there.

Good afternoon, Jim; I thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. Now that I have seen tomorrows #5 and answered you, I can check my eyelids for light leaks until supper time. LOL!! Actually, I have the Science channel on the idiot box and the "Explosion program series about to end. I have enjoyed it before and a good run into the 4th of July celebrations. Fireworks are basically illegal here but as with many other places there will be an abundance of them making noise and keeping me on edge most of the night.
No matter. I'll live thru it. Again.

I confess I’ve the little advantage of a much later hour in Germany, but since there are so many followers one has ‚to get up early‘ to manage to be the first even in the afternoon. I have been in Germany a couple of times and rode the train from Breman to Wilamshaven to meet a ship there many years ago. What a train trip that was for me.

Yeah Mike it's all that harsh weather. And this year we're getting a lot more of it. You know I never thought that that would mess up train service but you know the tracks are all flooded and everything. And they can't move because it's probably raining so hard you can't see that well. Anyway it's good to see that people are arriving and leaving in there

I think the majority of the rainfall has drained away across Nebraska and central to western Iowa. The rivers are going to be running at flood stage for some time yet.
And the mosquitoes will be in abundance very soon.

If the weather guessers are anywhere near close, we will have a much cooler day with light breezes tomorrow for the 4th of July celebrations. The one thing they have gotten correct is the very high pollen load in the air. I hope that your errand chasing has gone well and you ae done with that for today.

Evening Mike. Finally got around to catching up with you and the Zephyr. First thing I noticed was the chorus in full form near 7AM! It doesn't look like it, but are they sensing bad weather, or are they just being lazy? It's nice to see the train being busy during It's Ft Morgan stop. Holiday traffic, maybe? Looks like one of the engines needs some injector attention! That was a definite ALCO reaction, as they headed toward Denver. Take care, stay safe and cool, and I'll check in tomorrow.
Good evening, Phil; I thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. It was difficult for me to hear the avian chorus over the industrial noise pollution from across the tracks. I think they were bag chirping the workers at Mid-West Millwrights for starting their day before the Zephyr arrived. LOL! For the most part they were being lazy. We did have some decent although windy conditions today. Very few of the P42s leave town without a cloud of ALCO appearing exhaust as they climb over West Street as they leave. As with the old ALCOs there is a lag in turbo ramp up. Oh well.

Good early Wednesday afternoon Mike! 12:23 PM Iowa time today. Warm and a bit humid again after the storm moved through here around 5:30 yesterday afternoon. Just a little wind and some rain. Tornado warnings were posted for northern Washington County where I live in central Washington County. No sirens were set off here. I watched Omaha Tom this morning when he recorded number 6 coming through there on the trek eastbound. Have a great Wednesday out your way Sir! I’m in the air conditioning at home for a while. Good afternoon, Mark; Thanks for tuning in as well as the comments. It is warming into the 80s here and a stiff wind from the south which can stop any time it wants to. LOL! Tomorrow in the 70s and light breezes for the 4th of July celebrations. I do hope that you aren't visited by any of those turny-twisty things back there. I looked at Burlington, Iowa via the V/R cam there and noticed they had the portable flood barriers in place. I don't envy anyone along either Missouri or Mississippi rivers right now. Too bad there isn't a way to return that water to where it can do a lot of good. But then the chemical loading of the water isn't needed out here.

Good evening, Thomas; Thanks for looking in and the question. Iam not sure which last stop you are looking for, but the last station stop in Colorado is Grand Junction. The final destination for the California Zephyr is Emeryville, California.

Good morning, Gerald; Thank you for dialing in as well as the comments. I chased yesterday's #5 and found it was running over 10 hours late. I think there was a rock/mud slide in Glenwood Canyon that held them up for a while. I sure hope the party goods hold out for that trin. LOL!
It appears the worst of the heavy weather has moved east and away from the routes for both the Zephyr and the Southwest Chief.

Good morning Mike. I was just thinking about when i was a kid, i would be charged with taking Dad's "call". Of course there were no cell phones back then and the RR had to talk to a live person. In return for that, l got to go on one trip a year and ride in the engine as well as the caboose. Talk about big stuff for a kid!! Great memories.

The Wall Street cowboys said they wouldn't spend the money and reduced the work force by a large number of furloughs. Thus, the weeds.

Good morning, Kenny; Thanks for dropping by and the comments. BNSF is in charge of the weeds. The area around the depot is pretty clear of weeds. That's the area owned by AMTRAK. I rather doubt that BNSF will send the weed sprayer train thru this year as it is already past time for the sprayer to do any good.
