Here is a roleplaying tip for a Malky. Imagine your derangement in a filter. EVERYTHING your character experiences passes through that filter and is changed, as well as everything they try to put out into the world passes through as well and is changed. Sure, some Malkys are the ride the dinosaur skeleton naked in the middle of the museum types, but most are so deranged they are terrifying. Play your derangement. Play it hard and true. And keep playing it when your troupe are laughing at the table. Then keep playing it. Keep going even when they stop laughing and start getting bored with it. Then keep going. Keep going until they are all looking at you with worry and fear. That's when you are somewhere near home for a Malkavian. Cheers.
I like to play my Malk as a tortured autistic character, torn between the extremes of severe suicidal depression and the survival instinct of the Beast, I then fill up the corners with complex paranoid delusions, though not vulgarly obvious to the other players (mistrust, aggressive outbursts, Machiavellian scheming, etc.). This is largely based on my own somewhat pathological persona, though with a little less critical reason and a little more dramatic impulsivity - no fish. My own diagnosis is autism /adhd/social anxiety with severe depression, and sure i've been to some condescending asshole therapists, but they never, ever accused me of being 'too lucid' or 'not wacky enough', let alone 'not retarded enough to be autistic'. As an aspiring clinical psych, I hope i never patronise a patient as bad as a crappy storyteller degrades a Malkavian. That's when i get hostile OOC, not even joking. Example: I was once accused of cheating (Playing a Bru with Malk powers), so i went full fish and they loved me. I left the game after that session. I really hoped that shit had changed since the 1990s, what with mental health awareness and other fashionable snowflakery going on, but i still get the shitty end of the stick, socially, professionally and academically. I just quit another crappy job today bc i am sick of having my intelligence insulted by minimum wage drones (i usually reply by asking how their PhD thesis is going, then undermine their self-esteem for being less than a rocket scientist themselves); who cares, i graduate next year, then i can get a real job and they will still be the NPCs of the real world (ie. there to be used/robbed/provide exposition, lol). We are losing the battle, my friends; ignorance is winning. Hope that helps (or hurts) anyone who has been getting it wrong!

Playing a Malkavian is an interesting experience, if done right they are awesome, but it's so easy to mess up on them, to make them into Fish-Malks. I admire anyone who can play a Malkavian well enough to not be a Fish-Malk.
***** Fishmalk is a term used to refer to a stereo typically wacky Malkavian, the type who hits someone in the face with a fish and runs away hooting. Since Malkavians are all insane, the clan tends to attract a type of player who wants to be wacky or otherwise "chaotic neutral". The specific origin of the term has been attributed to an illustration in the Vampire: The Dark Ages Rule book, which featured a "knight in his undies bleeding into a goblet while some guy fondled a dead fish."
I agree. Most Malkavian players are just a reduction of a stereotype of a mental illness and it gets tiring...Or a "wacky harley quinn ripoff" which is also blend and not creative... playing a Malkavian requires skill and thought.
I find there are good Malk players and writers who made fish Malks so bizarre they go beyond your expected fail and made it something that even with the trademarked “chaotic stupid” behaviour of a regular fishMalk, they pulled in the other players into their derangedments. I suppose most of them instead of winging it, they play the metaplot, doing seeming random stuff to hide the player’s true intent, breaking 4th walls, using dementation to pry spoilers from the ST, you name it.
@@VandalAudi best Malk ive ever seen played had MPD. Three personalities and each thought they were different clans (npc st created.) A malkavian advisor, Nosferatu spy, and a Brujah bruiser all in one character. It was beautiful
@@VandalAudi Had a fellow player who did a lot of what you described and it more disruptive and annoying than anything else, quite unpleasant too, actually. He would interrupt other players in order to describe whatever "wacky" thing he was doing at that moment or to explain what "Caine" was whispering to him, yep, that was his derangement, Caine would give him orders and tell him secrets which he would generally use to derail the story. It finally came to a head during the second session when he started verbally abusing another player and threatening to ghoul and rape the character's family members after they'd politely asked him to stop interrupting them and when several members of the group reprimanded him for this he had a panic attack, fell over and shit his pants. I was kind of in shock as to what was happening when he silently got up, went to the bathroom, locked the door and didn't come out until his brother arrived to pick him up.

Malkavian is my favorite clan to roleplay even though they get pretty boned in terms of disciplines and are primarily used for comic relief. As a Storyteller, I restrict Malkavians to only veteran players with good concepts...you've got to earn the right to play Malkavian in my World of Darkness. My favorite Malkavian character was called "The Vampire Batman" although he also had a secret identity during the day as the always sleeping, thousandaire playboy and welfare recipient Woose Brain. Rather than play him as raving and random-he was simply delusional about his identity and tried to the best of his ability to emulate The Caped Crusader no matter how weird or paradoxical it may seem to others. His demented delusions and vampire powers compensated for his lack of gadgets and resources. While in his mind he is wearing bulletproof Bat-armor and driving the Batmobile, he is really just wearing a trench-coat and a Batman T-shirt with matching Underoos on the back of a moped. He routinely tells the group, "No guns. I don't like guns." but then loads a magazine into his AK-47-when pressed about it he claims, "It's a Bat-a-rang." The coolest part was that by pretending to be Batman, he would find clues and analyze them in his "Bat Computer" which was actually just sticking whatever he picked up in his mouth and using-the Malkavian mind network to render surprisingly accurate crime fighting information in most cases. I also made him a legit martial arts expert with a supply of exceedingly useful everyday tools on his belt, and eventually he owned a vampire bar called "The Bat Cave." He referred to the Prince as Commissioner Gordon and everyone else on the team he called "Alfred"-just little things here and there to let you know that he was bat-shit crazy but not completely worthless and annoying.
Wesley Brown I think this is really cool, I hate how Malkavians are reduced to comic relief in most adventures. They have the most potential of all the clans in my opinion, think "genius syndrome". I love my Malkavians to be incredibly intelligent, truly knowing all the answers but none of the questions.
I feel like that's exactly the kind of Malkavian that gives the clan such a bad name. This is not a silly clan - it's a clan of tragedy and terrifying horror.

Thanks for the shout out. Great points about the malks being so totally different from each other. Good job with the story about Cain too. Salot did indeed return. I've seen many cities in games were Malks weren't welcome. Last time I ran VTM, the prince of my city, Boston, was a Malk. excellent job.
The first and only vampire I've played so far is a Malkavian. She is very emotionally invested in the survival and wellbeing of insects in sort of a Kristoff from Frozen "Reindeers are better than people" kind of a way. Imagine her surprise when they start telling her the things they want.
She was embraced by her uncle, whose derangement was that he would always embellish past events in his own mind to make them seem more exciting, and then ended up believing his own tall tales had actually happened. He was killed pretty soon after he embraced my character, though, so he didn't really get a good chance to introduce her to vampire life.

Well thank you, that was fairly informative, and contained a few things I was not aware of.. Just one thing, though: Wasn't Malkav also a Child of Lilith, and twin Brother of Toreador?
What is your opinion of Dominate Malkavians? The core book says their madness is less pronounced and certainly less dangerous, and they even appear to be outwardly stable. So, does that mean that the Dominate Malks are much more lucid and reliable? I imagine them to be rather rational and sensible, although weird, as opposed to the unpredictable madness of normal Malks. I'm trying to create an obsessive-compulsive occultist Malk who is weird and friendly, rather than dangerously deranged.
Excellent enjoyable insights into Clan Malk, thanks. Im interested in how star signs compare to Vtm clans, and I've always thought that Aquarius would be a nice comparison. Unpredictable yet usually reliable. Capable yet chaotic. Looney yet deeply insightful.

@hoboyho In my last Dark Ages chronicle we didn't have any Malkavians, but we did have a True Brujah who diablerised one. He ended up taking on the Malk as an alternate personality.
Very nice, I have to say that this is one of your better history lesson videos. I can't wait to see some of your videos when/if you get around to the Werewolf tribes. Also, would it be possible to do an addendum video at some point regarding the malkavia disease ?
well, i would like to start playing a malkav, but i have a few questions... 1)are either sicero or sheogorath, good inspirations for a malkav character? 2)knowing that everyone have some "weirdness" or "mental illnes"(at least in my country it is said that more than 90% have at least something, from obsessions to depression or stress and lots of them end up with something worst because of that) making an exageration of my own, could work?(my problem is that when i get angry i think different, things that i would like when im happy are anoying, and things that i would hate when im happy i start to like when im angry, also... i lose any mercy or simpathy for anyone, and coul see someone dying without even thinking its something to care about but it does not means im violent, just that violence does not seems like something important when im really really angry, but yeah, i tend to be more violent when im angry, like anybody else) and 3)what can you tell me about malkav ghouls?
Cicero in my opinion would be a better choice - perhaps performed with more subtlety. Malkavians are crazy but not stupid, and those that live in the camerilla rarely are loud about their insanity. To do so could put them in danger of being exploited or killed. Like in Bloodlines, Tourette Voermann has multiple personality disorder which is used strategically to fool people that there is more than one vampire running the city. One being impulsive, sexually driven and anarchic while the other is cold, psychopathic and business based. Another example could be Hannibal Lecter, who would be a mixture of antisocial disorder mixed with intellectualism. Uncomfortable to be around and very analytical of people around him and perhaps tempted to go into a fit of rage if a provocation, which goes against the Malk's judgement of character is triggered.

What I like about Dementation is that it doesn't cause insanity per se, but rather brings that inner latent madness bubbling up to the surface. It's also unique in that many Malkavians are not only willing to teach this discipline, but will merrily do so. Of course anyone who seeks to learn it will invariably gain a dementia. Though in the Malkavian's eyes, they're doing that kindred a favor by expanding their reality just a bit...
Doing some research as a complete beginner and our ST pointed to this channel. Before doing any reading I tried taking the clan quiz on the official website as I figured it'd be a fun entry and I got Malkavian. Wasn't disappointed. One of the other players got that too. Our ST response was: This is gotte be fun 😅 But I've definitely taken some good mental notes from this video. We'll see if that's the clan I pick, definitely very intriguing.

@tetsubo57 There were no therapists in the days and nights of Enoch, alas. Not to my knowledge, but I could say the same for many RPGs. @mollytherealdeal Old World of Darkness. I could move onto new at some point, but the clans have less flavour in new. I do like the sound of that character! A very different type of Malkavian.
Imagine that the universe were a Rube Goldberg machine, huge, truly huge, and you are in there, somewhere in there, not being able to see the forest because you are two inches away from a tree, and in this immense machine there are infinite little balls doing their random things along the machine; now, why does a Malkavian embraces someone? Because it's going to be funny, in the great scale or at a tiny point of that machine, eventually. It's going to come out as a punchline of some kind, eventually. You all are welcome.
Great guide! Is this new World of Darkness or old World of Darkness? I have not played the new stuff. My favorite character in a role playing game was a Malkavian, a betrayed Navy SEAL who was secretly given LSD in a mind control experiment. His team was massacred in an ambush while they were all under the influence. His commanding officer turned him into a vampire because he was the craziest one. The player who created him was quite clever.
Do you know any books on vampires with depth, interesting story and really dark atmosphere similar to a game Vampire:Bloodlines? There's plenty of vampire stories, but they're shallow, stereotypical and mostly childish - I'm looking for something more mature, thanks in advance!
I don't know if you've read Anne Rice's books, collectively known as "The Vampire Chronicles" but I would recommend them - unless you've already read them and found them too childish, that is...
I dunno, the story told in chapter 1 of the Malkavian clanbook is a really good story from I think a Methuselah of the clan. A good example would be the eater.
Published back in the 1980s trying to recall but Fevre Dreams by George RR Martine, same guy that did Game of Thrones, this seems a nice little list: www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/the-10-best-vampire-novels-no-one-has-read/ I also love Robert McCammon's They Thirst.

I usually ask around at planet-vampire . com when I have questions like that. I'm currently playing with v. 7.9 of the unofficial patch and don't think you should get any patch that is much earlier than that. I don't play with any of those mods, but it usually says which unofficial patch version they're based on.
There's always something that's bugged me whenever my group gets together for Vampire, we usually have 2 Malkavians in our group and if one player isn't able to make it, the character just decides to leave for the session, every once in a while both can't make it, but I'm the only person in our group whose character is ever worried that TWO Malkavians have just decided to up and leave. I dunno, it's just something that's bothered me, not sure if it should or not.
@clackclickbang Well mental illness and an almost tragic connection to the true destiny of the WoD. I always saw the Malkavians as Cassandra-like characters. They know so much about the ways of the world, the future and their place in it but are never able to comprehend it in a "sensible" way. And there are so many great character concepts possible with them.
Playing one now in 5th edition working to get to full madness network Dementation powers with dissociative identity disorder fun as a painter and artist
May I ask a question? I'm new to WoD and currently reading the Malkavians Clanbook and on page 24 it says "We are not immune [to the plague]". I thought kindred are immune to viruses/bacteria, merely making them a plague bearer if they drink from respective kine. I have my knowledge widely from the computer games however. Thanks
Good morning :) If there are certain infections, drugs, and such in the blood a vampire is drinking sometimes this can create side effects. There are various Merits/Flaws that impact this. I hope that helps, but I'm sure The Gentleman Gamer can expand on my answer.
Thanks for the answer. This makes sense considering blood from the homeless is lower in quality in the game aswell. But eh I guess you can't really rely on the game fully :P. I feel it's pretty congruent however.

A fun detail is that Saulot actually found the answear to Malkav and Set's question. (SPOILER ALERT!) His reply to them is in a document that players can discover in Transylvania Chronicles, and it can be a bit shocking... considering this is established 3rd edition lore. An interesting read, but I don't recomend looking it up unless you plan on running a Gehenna chronicle. It does make the Revised CB a very interesting read, once you understand what they were looking for, and why they failed.
There's that, but a Malkavian's Dementation of sufficient level can be permanent, which is a pretty long time for the vampire struck with it. It's going to be pretty hard to find something capable of getting rid of something like a paranoia, depression or newfound fear of the dark. In the middle of combat this can be deadly. Also most Thaumaturgy paths can be matched by other clan powers. Assamites and Setites even have their own Thaumaturgy paths that Tremere don't have access to.
The part on the schooling of Dominate doesn't seem right to me. Unless I am reading the Great prank wrong. I thought the use of Dominate came to be after the Entirety of Clan Malkavian using the MMN and with the help of Malkav (or so it is believed) stole the use of Dominate from The Ventrue and that formed the Schism in the Clan.

It made the screaming stop most of the time and that is SO much less distracting. Would you like some cookies and hugs, or shall I just dance?
The Gentleman Gamer It was great. Sometimes they'd end up as "Primogen," and all the Malkavians would bring their issues to the "special friend."

Malks have to be my favorite, for the sheer amount of variety in the clan, like every flavor jelly beans

@Samwise7RPG Thank you! The Malkavians are a superb clan when played with respect, tragedy and an element of seriousness.

Best part is calling all other players Alfred.
Wesley Brown lots of laughter
Best presentation I've seen regarding the mindset of Clan Malkavian.

We are Clan Malkavian! Fuck the Sabbat! Fuck the Camarilla! Cousin, it is time!
You mean the dinner is ready, twisted child of Malkav?
Your clock is slow, dear brother. It was time 6 months ago, but no-one showed. We had to reschedule for February 31st.
The voices are weakened, but we shall listen.
So quiet... Please, make me scream...
Hush silent one, many things must be screamed these nights.
I've been preparing my next Malkavian character for like 2 months now, and I don't expect to finish anytime soon. Feeling it will be a great story once Daniel rolls in (his name).
I like the way you did this presenting the Malkavians as an old malkavian and tremere player it made me very nostalgic to play once again but at the moment I am running the game my friends and I are playing.
@Onionkid99 Dementation isn't too far from the Discipline of Presence, in that it merely heightens emotions that already exist in a mortal or vampire.
This clan is a forbidden player clan in my campaigns because everyone wants to play this clan lately due to a GM I met on a convention who was able to put an EXCELLENT Malkavian on the board.
Next to this, excellent video. Thanks!

@eggmansizzle The Malkavians are up there among my favourite clans.
Well thank you, that was fairly informative, and contained a few things I was not aware of..
Just one thing, though:
Wasn't Malkav also a Child of Lilith, and twin Brother of Toreador?

Very nice, I have to say that this is one of your better history lesson videos. I can't wait to see some of your videos when/if you get around to the Werewolf tribes. Also, would it be possible to do an addendum video at some point regarding the malkavia disease ?
Now i want to get into playing Tabletop games because of your vast knowledge of the game.
well, i would like to start playing a malkav, but i have a few questions...
1)are either sicero or sheogorath, good inspirations for a malkav character?
2)knowing that everyone have some "weirdness" or "mental illnes"(at least in my country it is said that more than 90% have at least something, from obsessions to depression or stress and lots of them end up with something worst because of that) making an exageration of my own, could work?(my problem is that when i get angry i think different, things that i would like when im happy are anoying, and things that i would hate when im happy i start to like when im angry, also... i lose any mercy or simpathy for anyone, and coul see someone dying without even thinking its something to care about but it does not means im violent, just that violence does not seems like something important when im really really angry, but yeah, i tend to be more violent when im angry, like anybody else)
and
3)what can you tell me about malkav ghouls?
If you wanna play a cripplingly depressed Malk watch and study Bojack Horseman.

I'm glad that I inspired a malk creation. The quote I used is actually from my Elder character I made training his childe to be a true malkavian. Malkavians see the world. They can see how the sane see it but they know it's a falsehood.

Hey, could you please do a video on the daughters of cacophony? I think they're kind of cool.

Where?
My pleasure. I hope your family member is doing well.

Very kind of you to say so... What would you like to hear me say?
@WolfgangNightshadow He sounds like a very cool character. A decent sort of Malkavian!
Wow, I am all caught up on your RPG videos. Well done. I don`t suppose you would give Rifts: Chaos Earth, so you can give me some advice on the rules.

@hoboyho They are a good clan to play as, providing you can do so with seriousness and an understanding of how tragic mental illness can be.
Do you know any books on vampires with depth, interesting story and really dark atmosphere similar to a game Vampire:Bloodlines? There's plenty of vampire stories, but they're shallow, stereotypical and mostly childish - I'm looking for something more mature, thanks in advance!
+grzechu1987 try the P&p :)

I usually ask around at planet-vampire . com when I have questions like that. I'm currently playing with v. 7.9 of the unofficial patch and don't think you should get any patch that is much earlier than that. I don't play with any of those mods, but it usually says which unofficial patch version they're based on.
Just curious, what version of VtM do you use? I use the Laws of the Night revised rules personally.

Have you given Curseborne a go? kck.st/3ZOkscU
They're doing an MMO!

Oh? Why's that? Feel free to PM if you don't want to carry a conversation through comments.
I seem to recall Malkav terrified even Brujha. I think it's in the lore somewhere
By the way, did you get the history from the Book of Nod?
A fun detail is that Saulot actually found the answear to Malkav and Set's question. (SPOILER ALERT!) His reply to them is in a document that players can discover in Transylvania Chronicles, and it can be a bit shocking... considering this is established 3rd edition lore. An interesting read, but I don't recomend looking it up unless you plan on running a Gehenna chronicle. It does make the Revised CB a very interesting read, once you understand what they were looking for, and why they failed.
@publicmasturbator666 I bought it upon release. It's an excellent game, albeit flawed by the bugs it has. I may do a Let's Play of it at some point.
6:44 you describe Dementation like how the Brujha would use Presence.
When a Malkavian speaks, listen. When a Malkavian acts, leave. When two Malkavians gather, run.
