I really do wish I had gotten a chance to try those what they were new, I absolutely fell in love with Superstar saga the gameplay and the sprite-work are both just so perfect
I'd recommend Super Paper Mario if you like TTYD's tonal direction, grander story & focus on moving away from/subverting the Mario status quo. IMO that game takes those aspects even further, while all the later games were kept on too tight of a leash.
Absolutely, thanks for the recommendation. It's definitely one I've been looking at, I do wish they'd kept the combat from the other two but it looks like a great game regardless.
@@dogface701 Have you tried that Bug Fables indie game? It looks and sounds a bit unassuming at first, but it's great (and relatively cheap) I find it to be a better -actual- sequel to TTYD, it actually builds upon Paper Mario's combat, for one.
Yes I have, it was very fun. I made sure to include clips of it in the beginning when I was talking about what I like to see in RPGs, Born of Bread is another one that's along the same lines
Honestly Nintendo probably could have gotten away with simply rereleasing Super Mario RPG with a shiny coat of paint over the pixel art on the Switch and it would have sold like hotcakes. They definitely did more than they had to do for Super Mario RPG.
As far as framerate goes. I CAN play 30fps games but they feel distinctly last gen which...fair enough for Switch games I guess. But for actual new, AAA games like on PS5 they damn sure better at least have a Performance mode OPTION to get that shit running at least closer to 60FPS than 30 if they want me plunking down the whole ass $70+ day one
That's fair, personally as long as the experience is smooth I'm pleased. The issue in question was mostly about the TYD remake which runs at a smooth 30 fps with no dips, it seems like they sacrificed frame rate for visuals as it's easily the best looking of that series. I think for a turn based rpg that's not a bad trade-off, but that's subjective. I'm just glad it wasn't an issue like the poor folks who bought Redfall on launch.
My views on the Mario RPGs have soured over the years, unfortunately. They're wacky adventures alright and definitely the most interesting takes on Mario out there, but as games, I feel like they don't deliver as much. I'm european, so I missed out on SMRPG initially. Getting to play it now, though... it's a bit brain dead, isn't it? I really wish the postgame rematches in the remake had been the standard. They have SOMETHING going on to prevent me from mindlessly mashing A 90% of the time. To me M&L is fundamentally flawed with its "you can dodge every attack" gimmick. If I'm not at risk of losing HP, why would I use MP? Or care about enemy skills/formations/synergy? TTYD does that too, sadly, though Superguard is only a PART of combat, not the selling point. Speaking of, I believe Paper Mario is the strongest with its badge system, but only romhacks really explore the battle system that goes with it. And the last four games pulled a Gamefreak, getting rid of good ideas ripe with potential in favor of... uh. I haven't touched it in a while, but the Rabbids crossover is the opposite, I do think the gameplay is solid... it's the rest I don't care much about: it's a Rabbids game, everything is a punchline.
Fair assessment, I think for me the button presses to attempt to block or dodge an attack just kind of add a sense of agency to the turn-based combat which I really appreciate. But not everything is for everyone and that's okay, thank you for sharing your opinion I really liked the detailed breakdown, respect
@@dogface701 To be clear, I do like the agency part too. Even if that also ultimately means every action takes longer because you're expected to react to it. It has pros and cons. It depends on my mood x) I just think M&L goes about it in a terrible way. Hopefully the recently anouncement new entry addresses that in some fashion.
@VonFirflirch Fair enough, yeah that announcement has me pretty hyped. I wasn't really sure how long it would take for the series to make a return after AlphaDreams closure, but seeing that art style translated into 3D really put a smile on my face

@@dogface701 worth the wait thats all that matters! Thanks Man!
Hey I'm just glad you dug it
More on the way...
Paper Mario with 5 fingers is beyond cursed!
Yeah I didn't really think about that at first but I'm still here for it. Helps differentiate paper me from paper them

Same with the Thousand Year Door remake, they really went above and beyond with both

Also just out of curiosity, what country in Europe? I did a two-week educational tour 14 years ago and loved it

France.
What does that entail? I was never too interested in going abroad myself, even when school heavily encouraged it x)
