  • I finally caught my first Yellowfin Tuna of the season while solo fishing offshore in San Diego. I found a good school of tuna that wanted to bite and threw a live bait that got instantly smoked! The fight lasted WAYYY too long, because I hooked the fish on 20lb test and was super nervous about breaking it off. During the fight, a small Mako shark came in for a closer look and tried to take a piece of my fish home! Thankfully, he wasn't big enough to do major damage and I was able to land the fish.
After the trip I came back and cleaned and cooked the fish. I also break down my poke recipe, as well as how I smoked tuna belly and collars.
    Gear:
Opsin Florocarbon (This stuff made me a believer!)
    Okuma Metaliod
    Phenix Rod
    20lb monofilament
    Boat:
22 Foot Sea Swirl Striper Walkaround
    Yamaha F150 Outboard
    Catch and cook
    Catch Clean Cook

That was good man landed it . I was really thinking the worst as time went on with that 20 than the cussing starts 😂
You were lucky I’d say but that opsin is good line , I would spool all your reels with braid though I got away from mono along time ago and it has no memory like mono does lasts for years ..
Thanks for sharing and yeah the camera shots are cool ..

I have mostly braid on all my reels, but I like the stretch of having a mono top shot. Yeah, after an hour I started feeling a bit concerned about the 20lb haha

That was cool. If you keep chumming 1's and 2's while fighting they probably woulda locked into the corner and you coulda had a little solo ripper

@@SDKook Yea try it next time. Just leave the one hanging and throw a bit more chum and grab another rod and keep hookin em lol as long as one is hanging and you keep throwing singles every so often they will stick.

Here's a great way to use your YFT or BFT loins (Kona Star is name of my boat). It is easier than it may appear, I just added much detail to it.
THE KONA STAR ULTIMATE TUNA CLUB SANDWICH
    Ingredients (for 4):
    4 fresh tuna steaks
    1 cup Italian salad dressing
(Bernstein's Wine Country or other premium type)
4 large hamburger buns or gourmet rolls
    8 pineapple rings (canned)
    8 slices bacon
    mixed greens or lettuce
basil aioli (recipe included in text)
Large tuna loin - cut a 1 inch thick steak. For smaller tuna cut a 2 inch thick steak - butterfly the steak making it double in size to fit the bun.
Make the basil aioli dressing - mix together (in a non-reactive container - plastic or glass) 6 tablespoons premium mayonnaise, 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped FRESH basil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon olive oil, salt and pepper. Store covered in refrigerator while you prepare the other sandwich components so the flavours meld.
In a non-reactive bowl mix 1-2 tablespoons of juice from the pineapple rings to the Italian salad dressing. Marinade the pineapple rings (2 per sandwich) in the mixture for 15 minutes. Cook bacon (2 slices per sandwich) till crisp, drain on paper towels, set aside.
Remove pineapple rings and add tuna to marinade for 15 minutes.
Grill the pineapple rings on preheated grill - about 2 minutes per side to get nice grill marks. Remove from grill and set aside.
Grill the tuna on well-oiled grill (2 minutes per side-more or less depending on preference. I prefer to cook all the way through).
While tuna is grilling, lightly toast the inner sides of the buns (1-2 minutes) under a broiler.
Build the sandwich - spread the aioli on each half of the toasted bun ( 1/2 to 3/4 tablespoon per side). Place two slices bacon on bottom, then the tuna steak, add two pineapple rings, top with the greens or lettuce, bun top.
Serve with potato salad or chips, pickle and a light white wine or pale ale.
    Prepare for nirvana - Eat.

@@SDKook was just wondering because I know there are a lot of awesome veterans out there that don’t get the chance to enjoy a day on the water and get away from the everyday stresses they are going through.

Can you post here or in the description the video equipment you use that follows you around the boat? It appears to be very sophisticated based on the video contenet and angles you are able to capture.
Also, get in the habit of bleeding out your tunas before icing them. Makes a huge improvement in.meat quality, especially for sushi and sashimi.

I use a 360 camera mounted under my T-top. It's the insta360 x3. It's very versatile and really comes down to editing after filming to make it creative.
