Yeah I knew about Bergkamp's contribution to this win for 🇳🇱 nice assist as well as goal but VanDerSar's role in helping the rest of the game at 1-1 go to 10 vs 10 instead of 🇦🇷 with numerical advantage was crucial too.
And he didn't cheat like the Argentine's he just went up to him and Ortega stupidly took the bait.

As Rob Smyth wrote in this Joy of Six on one-on-ones, "It is not enough to score a goal; they must humiliate the goalkeeper too. In essence, it's a masculinity-waving contest," and arguably no one has stuck two fingers up to the goalkeepers' union more contemptuously than Claudio López in a World Cup quarter-final between Holland and Argentina in 1998. This was one of the most gloriously dismissive finishes of all time.
At first, after being sent through by Juan Sebastian Veron, it seems that López didn't know what to do, producing an array of feints and stepovers in a bid to throw Edwin van der Sar off the scent. It could have backfired spectacularly if Van der Sar had just stood his ground, but this was a battle of nerve, a test of wits, and Lopez came out on top.
Finally Van der Sar cracked and fell to the floor, which was precisely what López wanted. Van der Sar was totally at his mercy, but the indignity didn't end there. López could have chipped him or rounded him. Nah. Too much effort. Instead, as Van der Sar's face turned the same colour as Holland's shirts, Lopez casually nutmegged him. I remember watching this on Univision when it aired and hearing Andres Cantor's (who is Argentinian) heart breaking as he's screaming "GOOOOOOOOOLLLL" on that Bergkmap goal. These were two excellent sides. For my money, the Dutch were the best in this tourney. Deserved to have been champs.

Yes the technical mastery to place the ball where you want it to go is wonderful, but you can watch any ball juggler do that.
1: Look at Bergkamp impose his presence on the defender to force the issue n create a breaking ball for De Boer to collect.
2: Notice how switched on he is, instantly turns away n attacks space.
3: Now take note of the "Sleeping" Kluivert. He sees the space Bergkamp has vacated, times his run n attacks it.
4: De Boer finds Bergkamp who instantly feeds Kluivert with a magical first time headed pass.
Fantastic goal, high, HIGH level soccer. Beautiful teamwork... that sadly seems to be lost on Kluivert judging by his celebration & his teamates slightly muted response to it.

Quite possibly the most memorable game of that World Cup. I watched this as a kid and remember being riveted. It was on a knife's edge, great skill and tactics from both teams who were realistic contenders for the title, superb players on the pitch, two red cards... from the TV you could feel the incredible tension. And then Bergkamp just decided to execute Argentina with a moment of genius.

In anticipation of friday's quarterfinal matchup between these two greats i needed to go back in time to this beauty. This was a great game. These two have had quite the rivalry. You can clearly see the two different styles of football. The "total football" approach made famous by the Dutch teams of the 70s and the tenacity and individual flair of the Argentines. Goals like Bergkamp the whole process of it is something you've rarely seen after the 1998 World Cup. It's all boring tactical passing on the flanks. No defender today like ( de Boer) would gamble with a cross over pass to the striker( Bergkamp in this instance) and get a beautiful goal like that.

From the start, you might need to watch this in slow motion, Bergkamp is keeping the defender busy by dropping deep, he sees the ball break to one of his players, turns n attacks space.
Now keep yer eye on Kluivert, watch him time his run to attack the space Bergkamp left.
This is the Ajax Youth System in play, its routine for them since they were kids.
Now for more Bergkamp technical Majesty, he knows where Kluivert is gonna be but look at his ball control here, with his head !
If he picked that ball up with his hands n rolled it into Kluiverts path, he couldn't have done it any better.

Best match of the world cup. Clyvert and Bergkamp show their class. Bergkamps goal at the last moment was a classic. Final was one sided match. Zidane was the best cultivation of wc. I think after Maradona noone comes like Zidane who was a one man army.
Ortega did the same trick to win the holland match like vs England and the result was he was shown red card. Perfect revenge of David Beckham. I cant forget Bergkampsir.
Well Ronaldo played well till the final. But he had a heartattack or something before the final. They let him play, but he wasn´t himself afcourse. That was really a one man army.

La fifa nunca pasó la repetición. Fue penal a ortega, y no lo cobraron. Pero como siempre, son antiargentinos. En el 90, en el 94, en el 98, grupo de la muerte en 2002, Alemania no quería que juegue Messi en el 2006, el penal no cobrado en la final del 2014. La fifa es antiargentina desde la fama del gol con la mano de Diego.
No fue penal. Ortega se tira. Hay otras tomas donde se ve mejor esa jugada.

Pero volviendo a la jugada, cuando engancha y la pelota pasa, fíjate que el holandés le tira a destiempo la pierna para que el jugador no pase. Se ve clarito. Ortega se tira, pero el.reglamento dice Dar o Intentar dar. Ortega hizo show, pero la patada o rodillazo izquierdo existió, la pelota ya había pasado, y el holandés tira la pata, estira la pata, como quieras llamarlo, míralo de nuevo.
@@lucasf.386 Esa jugada la he visto bastantes veces al tratarse de una jugada que terminó siendo histórica. Si bien es cierto que Stam pone su pierna adelante, cuando este no ha ni terminando de poner el pie en el suelo ya Ortega estaba saltando. Hay una toma posterior en la que se ve muy claro todo y no queda ninguna duda. Ortega se tira, y se tira de una forma muy premeditada (que fue lo que hizo molestar a Van der Sar).
Ahora, esa misma jugada pudo haber sido cobrada como penal por otro árbitro si Ortega al menos la hubiese actuado mejor. Debió en todo caso ir al choque con la pierna de Stam y tener una caída un poco más natural, que pasara como una caída por zancadilla. Pero acá no había forma que el árbitro cayera porque fue un brinco muy anunciado en el que ni siquiera terminó habiendo contacto con el defensor.

This Dutch team i believe was the best team since the Cruyff days to never have won the WC. They should have won France 1998. They were unlucky against Brazil in the penalties. That team had it all.
I was going for 🇧🇷, but I think the 🇳🇱 would've given 🇫🇷 a better fight.
I blame their loss to 🇧🇷 chiefly on Kluivert. Even though he scored late to tie it up.....he missed too many chances where he should've at least been able to get ball on target. Too wasteful.
