Compressor, overdrive, EQ, preamp. Those are the essentials. Wah is optional, but can be loads of fun! Same with chorus/flanger, delay, and reverb.

Depending on what style of bass player you are; mine: Tuner, Mozz DI Preamp (channel 1), Zoom MS 70CDFR (Octave & Modulation), Mozz OD, Gallien Kreuger Amp (channel 2), effects send=> Hologram Microcosm (stereo 3 & 4).

My bass pedal board doubles as a guitar pedal board. I have a Keely compressor, an Ibanez TS9 overdrive, a Boss bass chorus, a MXR delay, a MXR Univibe, and the same TC Electronics tuner you have in this video. Putting the tuner at the end of my signal chain improves my sound (especially for guitar). I got this idea from Mick on That Pedal Show. Great review!

Thanks for bringing that up! Nice set up you got there Jeff! Glad you like the review! Cheers!

I’m curious in what way does it improve your sound?

@@arthuraguirrejr.9500 The Boss bass chorus helps me to get a Jaco Pastorius-like sound. It works acceptably for the guitar, too. The Keely compressor and the Ibanez TS9 both provide boost variations when set up for this. The delay doesn't do much for the bass but it's critical for slap back on guitar. I gave my son the MXR Univibe thinking that he'd appreciate it, based on his musical interests. I also have a HXStomp with some great amp/cabinet combinations that sound great through my Fender Rumble 40 and 100 combo amps.

@@jeffbriggs4268 nice thanks! How does the tuner at the end of your signal chain improve your sound?

@@arthuraguirrejr.9500 Having the tuner at the end with buffering makes the sound cleaner, since it buffers the signal from all the other pedals. I found it worth the change, instead of having it at the front of the pedal board. It's beneficial to experiment to see where the pedals sound best. For instance, I like compressors before an overdrive and some compressors sound better with one overdrive than another, to my ear anyway.

That’s pretty much the effects I have, except I use the overdrive from the preamp pedal rather than a dedicated overdrive pedal. My preamp has 2 outs one of which can be sent pre eq - this means I can give the sound techs a clean signal and an overdriven one, then leave them to select how much of each they use.

Nice demo. Freddie mentioned at the end of the overdrive segment "It's important to remember that when you add something, you take something else away." I wish the video hadn't been cut there, and that he had been allowed to explain that comment (it looks like he did, but it got edited out). Nuggets of information like that are WAY more valuable than "here's what distortion sounds like".... And just a side comment for future videos - consider putting chapter markers in for each pedal... Thanks!

Hey Skydrv69 - In response to your question.
Yes, when you add something you absolutely take something else away. It's a case of working out what can be compromised. With OD you saturate the sound so much you tend to either lose all the top or all the bottom end - it's a balancing act - what may sound awesome in isolation may not sound as great in a mix!
It's really surprising when you hear isolated bass sounds - usually it's Biamped (one clean and one dirty channel) - this can be really hard to achieve with 1 channel... I've split my signal to 2 channels in the past at gigs...
However, many OD pedals come with a "balance" or "blend" knob. My tip for getting a great overdrive sound is set your pedal with balance 100% wet and get a sound you're really happy with that sounds 100% awesome... Then exaggerate that sound by about 5%. Then balance to taste bringing in the original sound of the bass with the balance/blend knob. I'd always suggest putting more of the original sound than you "think" you need in it to help sit in a mix.
      Hope this helps! Cheers. F

I have been told that in a rock band, the bass should be clean if one or both guitars are overdriven. Apparently its too much fuzz and spoils the sound.
