    More About "Dreamcatcher":
In New America, crime is at an all-time high and countless murders are going unsolved every day. Forced to take ruthless action, the government develops an experimental and highly controversial interrogation tactic: a drug that induces the suspect into a dream-like state of psychosis, forcing them to face the guilt of their actions to the point of confession.
Cora Dalton is questioned for the untimely death of her roommate, Beth Barnes. Cora is persistent in the fact that she does not know what happened, but Detective Hammond is determined to get the truth. He slips her the experimental drug.
Now plunged into psychosis, Cora finds herself in a therapy session where she is pressured into talking about what really happened and the events that led up to Beth's death. She states that Beth stole her love interest. Fueled by pure jealousy, Cora confesses that she spiked Beth's wine with peanut oil and stole her EpiPen. While she confesses to the therapist in her mind, she confesses to Detective Hammond in the real world.
Cora is charged with murder and sentenced to life in the memory loop chamber where she is forced to relive what she has done until she dies.

Absolutely loved it! What would have destroyed is if the final scene saw her with some sort of sustenance drip, a colostomy/catheter so she literally had everything to keep her alive and in place for all of her days. She's gonna pee and crap herself at some point and they'll have to disconnect her from the memory feed.

The loop is real for people who have a conscious, have deep guilt/regret or victims of trauma. Its hard for them to escape reliving those memories, unless you can come to peace with it, suppress it(not a healthy method) or cope with the memory, it can seem like a life sentence.

    • @notyourbusiness7391

Unless you have multiple regrets and have learned to accept you're definitely not perfect and live with them. In which case every new regret does not mean a lot, it just fits into a pattern you accepted long ago. And I suppose that's what most people do anyway.

This is like Black Mirror's White Christmas but without the feelings. Even the ending is a copy of that episode.

Thanks for the feedback! Coincidentally, the script was written before I knew about Black Mirror, but one of my co-producers actually told me to watch it because he also thought it was similar. I drew inspiration for the visual of the final scene from the "Black Museum" episode where the wife is in the mind chamber watching her life on the huge screen.

In Black Mirror she was already convicted from the start. It was all just the "punishment".

One of the better DUST shorts - wouldnt mind seeing more in a series of shorts.
Was Cora REALLY guilty? Or was the MEMORY of the event altered just to get a conviction?
Like an episode of Star Trek Voyager "Ex Post Facto" where Tom Paris is convicted or murder and is implanted with memories of the victim and forced to relive murder over and over. Later it was revealed the "memory of the murder" was faked.
What if in the world of this short, a memory could be extracted, altered and reimplanted? Its already been proven implanting false memories is possible with exiting brainwashing techniques. With technology it could be done instantly.

A lot of parallels to the Black Mirror Christmas Special here.
Not a complaint, just an observation :)

Well, not that far off into the future. There actually has been ongoing research, for years, where experiential content can be extracted from the brain, via specialized fMRI imaging system, and "played back" as a video (Prof Jack Gallant, UC Berkeley, is a good example of this). The resolution is still rough, but the content is verifiably there.

Yes, this Dystopian idea has been investigated in classics like Total Recall, The Minority Report, many other stories.
Not only the interrogation is Dystopian, but also the punishment. Cruel and unusual punishment by definition.
In progressive societies, the purpose of Justice is to mitigate suffering of victims and rehabilitate perpetrators who have done harm to society.
