Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery - Framed out Sequoia on the cliff edge!

  • July 31st a volunteer team from Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery was dispatched to Gordon Gulch just south of Ward, Colorado to get a Toyota Sequoia that got too close to the washout edge and got high centered when the edge gave way.
    We used my Orange jeep with a 2:1 tethered to the back frame rails with transit clusters on a strap, and the white jeep was redirected off a tree from the driver side to prevent the front end from sliding into the washout and potentially rolling the vehicle.
    While it looked scary, the rigging was relatively simple and the pulling went quite smooth once that initial mire factor finally broke free. The first 12 inches of a pull like this is usually the hardest. We had to chalk my tires to prevent me from pulling downhill.
    Another smooth and safe operation completed by Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery!

      That is indeed a rigging option, however if for some reason things slacked up or bounced real hard doing it this way prevented tearing of the soft shackle with the hook. Those soft shackles are rated to 50,000 or so.

      synthetic line is for people who dont know how to rig most of it is pushed over the fear of it breaking. if you dont overload your rigging and its kept in good condition it wont break. even synthetic line will snap back when you rip the anchor point off. steel just takes the abuse better. if you just throw a little oil on the line every now it will last years in the sun and rain unlike synthetic

      I’m guessing you’re talking about the x lock off the front bumper. It’s to take up slack in the rope so he can have the drum spooled out all the way where it is the strongest. It wasn’t necessary in this case and added extra risk in the setup. A lot of poor decisions were made with this rigging.

      Justin King Many of us have looked into it but passed due to the safety issues with their curriculum. And the type of training I’ve been through over the last 2 decades is extensive and not available to the public. This was the first video I’ve watched of yours. You have way too many mechanical connections. Sometimes it’s necessary but most of the D rings in this video weren’t and the X wasn’t needed either. A basic double line back to the bumper would be more than enough. No disrespect intended and I didn’t realize you were doing this as a business until after I commented. I’m sure you won’t claim to know everything about winching and would agree that less mechanical connections could have been used in this specific pull. Great video otherwise 👍🏻

    • @JustinKingOffroad
      @JustinKingOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@whatwouldjasondo2883 the trainer makes all the difference. It's not a business, this is an all volunteer group, state recognized sar team, and yes we had extra items in the rigging, but I needed to be on my last wrap and couldn't back up further for the angle I needed with the equipment I had on hand. There's no offense, and I am not trying to be a smart ass. It was a legit question and I appreciate your legit answer. Some day I'd say try it out, it REALLY opened my eyes up to safe recovery practice. At no point in time did we exceed the ratings of any of the rigging, but we were close to maxed out on the transit clusters. It did add mass to the line no doubt, but we stayed well within the limits of the gear. I did a video on the x lock and what it's used for after this one. It allows you to get to the last wrap on your drum where the most pulling power is on a winch.

    Maybe this is just inexpirence talking, but why would you put your front line against the bull bar? I know there's not a lot of load on it, but it seems that wouldn't be secure under most circumstances?

    • @JustinKingOffroad
      @JustinKingOffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was the angle that we needed to pull on and it was the most secure mount for the safety line to prevent the vehicle from going over into the washout. That was a frame mounted point and there wasn't too much load on it.

    • @Chippy_777
      @Chippy_777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinKingOffroad I'm fairly new to Wheeling, so that's why I asked. I knew why you tied the front end off, because we got stuck like that one time, and when we pulled straight back the front end dropped off. Fortunately he had enough down travel in his suspension that he didn't roll over, but it could have been bad.
      What would you have done if you didn't have that to tie off to?
      Why'd you use a strap and pill from the middle vs putting a soft shackle around whatever you had the strap tied off to in the corner of the back?

    • @JustinKingOffroad
      @JustinKingOffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we would have bridled the frame and pulled that way, but that gets complicated with wrapping chain around frames vs transit clusters that can rip out of a frame.

    Great recovery. But it looks to me like there is something more than just washout going on there. The hole on the right side of the vehicle looks like it was dug by a small excavator. It's too square to be washout IMHO. Maybe somebody is trying to make the road impassable?

    • @JustinKingOffroad

      it's just the terrain, as it rains hard it washes downhill. most of this damage stems from the flooding rains in 2013. as people try to drive up they tear it up a bit more. it's a fun trail!
