      Thanks. I enjoy the mechanic side as well as the creative side of putting these kind of DIY automotive videos, and I would like to make a lot more in the future, but I need a Prelude first. Any donations out there?

    Literally the best maintenance/repair video I've ever seen. Literally just got done doing this whole process on my 97 Prelude SH thanks to your video. I did a cold start up and it's pretty cold outside as it was idling very high and it didn't do that stupid self revving idle thing anymore

    This is very helpful as my '00 Type SH is also acting up in a similar manner, I start her up and she sometimes idles at 1,000 RPM on a good day, but most of the time like around 700 and dropping to 500 and going back up to 700. The car turn off on me on neutral because my intake was completely loose, but we got that taken care of. Now at least twice a day my car turns off on me while I'm on neutral, RPMs dropping to zero and stuff, but this video should help me fix that (: Your videos encouraged me to get under the hood and get to know my car more better, thank you

      +Gustavo Castillo No problem, glad I could help out. It sounds like you most likely have carbon build up in the FITV and/or the IACV. Remove it and clean it out. It should fix the issue.

    If you don't live in a cold (winter freezing) climate you can just disable this, disconnect the coolant line and route it straight back to the thermostat housing, then blank off the part where the three o-rings are with some paper gasket material (not normal paper!). you'll never have any problems with it again and as a bonus it won't be heating up your throttle body and intake air.

    • @CSkwirl
      @CSkwirl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not use the metal plate as in this write up, I just put the gasket material between the 2 pieces and bolted them back to together, been fine for several years so far.

    What does this do exactly? Does it bypass the valve? Mine was about 1/2 way threaded in, why is it even threaded? Screwed it in most of the way, idles a lot lower at cold start, but idle still fluctuates after it warmed up on cold days 1500-2500 rpm up and down constantly. Thanks for any info

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, so sorry I missed this comment and did not reply much sooner. My 97 Prelude would die sometimes while stopped at a red light or stop sign. As the vehicle got older, the engine started to die more often when at a full complete stop. So cleaning out the FITV and IACV will help improve the engines idle, if the engines idle is bouncing around and/or going down to 0rpm, at a stop light, stop sign and start up. The FITV and IACV just gets a build up of carbon and it blocks the airflow.

    Im getting an idle surge after/during cold start.. the idle will raise to 2k rpm and back down to normal idle.. so no stalling just rasing idle and this is intermittent, somedays its normal.. could it be the fitv?

    Hello nice video man. :) I have h22 IACV idle is the problem even if i already change a new IACV. I have skunk2 alpha 70mm TB so it means i don't have FITV. what do you think any causes i'd still have a poor idle? hopes you can help me please.

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check for vacuum leaks all around the manifold. If you just installed a new throttle body, you might need a new gasket. But check for any air leaks all around the throttle body and then the intake manifold.
      That would be my best guess.

    • @darbats

      @mikeschmeeedotcom  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on your new ride! Preludes are amazing, never give it up! May you clarify a little? I'm not sure what you mean. The engines idle rises to 2-3000 RPM when the engine is at operating temperature?

    • @sykoskid
      @sykoskid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mikeschmeeedotcom. Yes like a sticky gas pedal. After car is warm . idle rises .

    can I ask why bleed the coolant ?

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can ask.
      Bleeding the coolant after disconnecting the FITV will remove any air that got into the system. Otherwise, there will be an air bubble stuck in the coolant lines which will cause a bouncing idle.
      Sorry for the late response!

    do I really need to do a coolant bleed when doing this? are there any ramifications if i don't?

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you disconnect the FITV and or the IACV air will most likely get into the coolant system. Therefor you should bleed the coolant to get rid of any air bubbles. You might be able to get away with it by opening the rad cap, start the car and let the vehicle run for several minutes. You should see air bubbles coming out of the radiator.

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. That can work too. One will also require a proper block off plate, and possibly a tuned ECU as the stock H22A4 ECU is not set up to run correctly without the IACV.
      Nonetheless, this video is about the Fast Idle Thermal Valve (FITV). So, a little different, but the same principle applies.
