My GoPro Settings Explained 2021

  • I get asked all the time what GoPro settings for motovlogging I use, so here are my GoPro settings explained one by one with some examples of the effects each setting has, and the best GoPro settings for motorcycles I've found best suited for me.
The whole topic of which are the best settings are very individual as they depend on where you're using the GoPro, what are the weather and lighting conditions like at the time, what experience do you have in terms of final editing, and also just your own personal choice as to what type of image you prefer comes out the GoPro.
I'll explain each of my settings and why I choose them, so by the end of this vid you'll have a better understanding of what the GoPro settings are all about, and you'll be able to go out and try for yourself.
Hope you enjoy the vid folks, keep SUBSCRIBING, keep SHARING, keep LIKING, and keep letting me know what you think in the COMMENTS section below!

Great job Bruce, after 5 minutes in, all I could think about was can I afford a Go Pro 9? After spending a fair few hundred notes on mods for my MT recently, I know the missus will not be happy! I might need to come up with some “safety justification” to convince her! Anyway if/when I do get one, this vid and the previous one will give me the confidence to get it up and running quickly. Cheers pal, keep up the good work, it’s all appreciated.

Thank you Bruce! After several failed attempts to get decent results with my new Hero 10 I came across this post/video. That changed things immediately! More or less copied everything you explain, minus a few things. That brought me on the right track! I'll never become a youtuber probably. More of an old school motorcycle blogger, with the intention to use video clips to spice up stories/posts. But at least now I can do so with decent results!
While doing research I also learned another thing. That TH-cam is not a technological democracy. That size and commercial powers (views) matters. That the bigger channels/youtubers and commercial enterprises gets priority. And thus will have at their disposal more server/CPU power, more quickly. Amateur like me will always have to wait longer to get the optimal Codec. But if it wasn't for your recommendations I probably never would have. Cheers mate!

They have their little ‘quirks’ like shutting down randomly, or not powering on unexplainable, but I still think they’re a good camera for on the bike. I used the GoPro subscription scheme so got a good discount t on my Hero9 with the media mod (essential for connecting up a Lav mic in your lid - means you don’t need that God-awful audio adaptor thing).

Great tutorial for us mere mortals. l live in Spain were l really don’t need to ‘fiddle’ with settings to much. l currently use a GoPro 8, l use similar setting to you.. Back in the day when using color reversal film in an olde worlde camera l very often under exposed a little to saturate the color…..it’s a fine line though..if you got it wrong you were screwed…

On the Hero 8 the file size for all settings of 2.7k and 4k are the same per minute if you set it on high bitrate mode but consumes more battery on 4k.

  • @AndyManCam

Grey walls looking slick Bruce. Way better than the white. Some great tips in here, you've even convinced me to think about using the EV comp a bit more. Though I tend to be way more extreme with the ISO lock cos of the ND filters and such. Have you ever considered messing about with the Gopro Labs firmware? YOu can globally change settings with a QR code and also choose to have 12GB files instead of 4GB. I'm seriously considering it but yet to find anybody that's tried it in real life!

The video quality is definitely poorer quality though.

      Cheers Malcolm,
All cameras utilise aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If you do t know what you’re doing then just whack it on auto and off you go - but altering the aperture, shutter and iso levels can really improve the image quality and also allow much more in terms of post editing etc.
GoPro’s have a fixed aperture of 2.8, so we have to work with the other settings as detailed in this vid 👍

Good information and very helpful The problem I'm having with my new gopro which got me looking for help is pixelation around the speedo and on the pavement directly in front of me, like the line between what's moving past me and what's moving with me, i.e., the bike. Everything else is acceptable but that pixelation on the pavement drives me nuts and I can't unsee it. Thing is, I can see it in your video too! None of the Gixxer’s used to have abs actually, I think it wasn’t until about 2012-2014 that they started offering it on the 1000, and of course they don’t do the 600 or 750 anymore 🤷‍♂️

Cheers Bruce, I'll give that ev comp of -0.5 a go for next time I'm out on the bike. I run different settings depending on what bike I'm on, my Moto Guzzis get the 60fps treatment as road stuff is quite fast, whereas my Beta footage, I record at 30fps as I am going slower, so the smoothness is not missed and it is more often than not lower light on the green lanes.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It does seem like if you are a smaller channel, TH-cam seems to drag the ta feet when processing your vids to a higher resolution (where available). I noticed that with my new podcast channel, it seems to take forever for the high quality resolution versions of the vids to be available, whereas on the main TeapotOne channel they seem to be almost instant.
There’s no option for bitrate in Final Cut Pro X, I just set it as ‘H.264 Better Quality’.
Looking at your vids, is that a GoPro your filming on as it looks more like Drift footage? It’s quite flat colour wise and doesn’t seem to have the contrast or saturation of a GoPro. Are you filming at 1080 or higher? What bitrate are you filming at? Is it set to auto or do you use manual controls for white balance, exposure etc?
Best bet with GoPro is to whack it on auto, highest bitrate, with GoPro colour then do some filming and upload a test file just to see if it makes any difference.

No I record my on-bike stuff at 60fps just because I like the crisper image it provides - HOWEVER, I’m experimenting more with the ND filters currently and I think my personal taste is changing a bit as there are times when I like the cinematic look these provide.

I’d like to try the Insta360 OneR and One X2 but can’t afford the outlay to buy them at present - however Lamb Chops swears by them. I found the original OneX wasn’t reliable enough for me and seemed to suffer from vibrations issues at higher speeds on the bike - but again Chops seems to do fine with his.
